1640 Hart House Ipswich Reviews from The Last Year
A huge disappointment
We went to the 1640 house with two friends. We had been there every year that we visit in the summer. It wasn’t very crowded, but the waitress was not very good. She was fine attending other people, but she barely came to the table for us I ordered the pot roast, which I had last year and it was delicious. It was more gristle than meat. This time in the carrots were barely cooked.. my two friends ordered the pork slow roasted. There’s as well was covered with so much fat and gristle that we ate very little. The waitress asked if we wanted to take home boxes we said no and we said we want dessert. Again, she had no problem attending to a table. That was a couple of tables to the last of us. In fact every time she went there, I tried to waiver attention, but couldn’t get it. Finally, I stood up and asked for the check and said the service was atrocious and she said I can’t help because somebody got sick and I didn’t even want to entertain the fact that she was waiting on the people who were ordering extra bottles of wine five times as much as she came to our table, very very disappointing.
Family Celebration
Our family of eight reserved a table for a multi-person birthday celebration at this historic site. We were seated in a room by ourselves - a former bedroom with damask drapes and at least 4 old prints of George Washington. But no sign that Geo. Washington slept there! Cocktails were yummy and food was good - HUGE servings! I had the home style meatloaf with cheesy mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. All was delicious and I brought half home for an ample meal the next night. Service was fine considering how busy the place was.
Just moved to the Boston area and celebrated our
Just moved to the Boston area and celebrated our anniversary here. The clam chowder was excellent NE, and the French Onion soup was classic. I had the baked oysters, which was a first for me and I'd return for them as well as the mussels! We had the special Sea Bass and the Seafood Risotto, both large portions and excellent! Their special Old Fashion was made the same way as my all time favorite of bourbon on the rocks with an orange slice or twist but made perfect muddled with sugar and cherries. The Old Fashioned and wine were huge free pours. Reservations are difficult to get, so plan early and let them respond with availability. The large private parking lot is not large enough!! Cars were overflowing to the side street! Will return for sure!
The food was delicious.
They location was a bit loud for a birthday celebration. However, we did have an enjoyable time.
Nice Dinner
This is a nice and large restaurant in an older building. The menu is large and varied, the food is good, the portions are large and prices are quite reasonable. The cocktails and wine both featured very generous pours. Service was a bit slow, though very friendly. This was a nice choice for a more traditional New England dinner.
Poorer than expected.
.. supported with take out orders during the pandemic, food is usually very good. They appear to prefer large group events and bar patrons. My guest arrived before me harassed by a drunken party goer. Lots of excuses and no apology... seeking new dining experiences elsewhere.
One or two steps above fast food.
If you don't really pay attention, you will think that you are having a good experience. The meat is overcooked and bland. The sides are cafeterias steam table selections. You may realize that it was the strong cocktails and overpoured wines that satisfied you. Sad
Delicious food
Vibrant bar scene, in a lovely old antique NE colonial home; Beautiful fireplaces and hard wood floors with greens for the holiday season. The pumpkin ravioli with butter and sage was delightful. Well worth the visit!
fatty gristly meat had to spit out ugh good mashed
fatty gristly meat had to spit out ugh good mashed potato good green beans slanted sloped table, can't this be fixed? i get the place is ancient but come on
This restaurant is like taking a step back in time - old
This restaurant is like taking a step back in time - old wood, fireplaces galore and cozy vibes. The moment you sit down, you're greeted by someone who hand picks a dark or white roll for you, with butter on the table. It's nice that there's a bottle of water at the table too. We ordered the French onion soup cups, which was the perfect size before diving into our entrees. The menu is extremely diverse, but the comfort foods stole the show (pot roast and meatloaf). We ended with the caramel bread pudding, which was absolutely delicious. Portions are generous and prices are extremely affordable, which is a combination hard to come by today. Definitely recommend making a reservation, but looking forward to coming back the next time we're visiting family on the North Shore.
Always excellent in every category.
Fresh breads, good drinks and great food and service.
Great food and cozy atmosphere.
I love the fireplace and the staff are extremely friendly. Lots of parking too!

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.

Reservations could be posted for a variety of reasons. Most likely, the person who secured the reservation can no longer attend - to avoid accruing a "no show" fee, they can find someone to take their place.
