Fantastic meal at hidden French restaurant
My wife and I dined at the Angelus on Friday 20th Aug 2021. The restaurant is one minute from the Royal Lancaster hotel and also Lancaster Gate underground. We had starter and main course and were so full we could only share a pudding.
My starter was butternut soup and my wife had the scallops, both with traditional baguette and both very tasty. For mains we opted for the boeuf bourguignon which was fantastic: lots of tender beef, vegetables firm and not cooked to a pulp, and a lovely rich gravy. For sweet we shared Pear Belle Helene, pear with chocolate sauce and caramel ice-cream, again beautifully cooked and presented. The wine list was extensive and we selected a bottle of Crozes-Hermitage which went particularly well with the main course.
This is my 1st ever Trip advisor review, but I felt I just had to share this 'secret' restaurant. The whole meal was absolutely delicious with attentive service throughout. The pub itself used to be frequented by Churchill before closing, so nice to see the building retained and still full of character. We can't wait for an excuse to go back!
Good Option when in Paddington
Was a nice evening with solid mains. Shout out to Lucia--super great service and very sweet. Opted for the seafood soup special (8£) which was fine--needed salt and didn't have the rich seafood base stock that I had envisioned. Good-sized portion though. The duck breast (26£) was exceptional--perfectly cooked and not much fat which I prefer. The sorbet with cassis creme dessert was soooo flavorful. A wonderful evening overall and would recommend.

I walked in to Angelus at 7pm on a Wednesday evening. The place smelt musty and there were no other customers - bad sign! The staff were friendly but the menus they gave us were tatty - ridiculous to charge what they do for the wine and have a wine list that is ripped & dirty. The whole place has an air of being out of date and forgotten about.
My food was average at best, though I think my friends liked theirs more than me. The smoked salmon starter was fairly bland and the duck confit was so salty as to be almost inedible. And something gave me a very upset stomach, whilst I will still in the restaurant. Not pleasant.
Awesome location for those travelling in/out of Paddington. But for me the convenience still does not make Angelus worth visiting unfortunately.
Excellent restaurant in my former favourite pub
My wife and I dined at Angelus for the first time, having for years been more or less regular customers of the pub previously located in the same premises, luckily quite carefully redesigned into this fine dining restaurant. Our evening could hardly have been better, exquisite food and wines, perfect service, prices perhaps not the lowest but wholly appropriate for what we got. But be warned, this is not a large place, do book in advance!

If you are travelling west from Paddington and want to meet someone travelling from the city on the Central Line, this is an ideal location. It's 6 mins from Paddington and 3 mins from Lancaster Gate Tube Station.
The food is just great, staff friendly and the decor has a certain old fashion charm. The pan fried Sea Bass with vegetables can only be described as excellent! We will return.
Great food, service and staff
We really enjoyed the food, wine and friendly service. All was top notch. We were staying at the Royal Lancaster and noticed it was just across the road. Glad we booked. Some tables outside but has a great interior thanks to it being a former public house. Highly recommend. The lovely Italian waiting staff were very professional too.
