Enjoyed a very memorable experience at the Chicago "Au Cheval" 3 years ago. Was pleasantly surprised there was a NY location next to hotel here. Was by myself, so just sat at bar and enjoyed a glass of wine and their amazing burger! Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyTruly exceptional brunch experience.
Great food, amazing drinks and bloody Mary's that look beautiful and are delicious to drink and eat.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an early reservation on a Saturday night.
We were very nicely greeted by the host, which then sat us. They were already busy (of course) but not overly full. We didn't have someone seated next to us until we were done, which was nice! I had the root beer to drink but I didn't love it. It kind of tasted like there was an artificial sweetener in it. We didn't bother trying their spirit free drinks because they were $19; the same price as a "real" spirit. We ordered the prime rib sandwich, the double cheeseburger (how could you not?!), and the bacon & black pepper Mac n' cheese. The prime rib sandwich was amazing!!!! So juicy! It came au jus and creamy horseradish but you didn't even need them. The au jus did have a little kick to it so that was a nice touch with the sandwich. We added the bacon and egg to the burger. The bacon was way too fatty for my liking. The burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested. It tasted rare to me. My friend said it's one of the best he has. I thought there was too much going on to really enjoy the burger. The Mac n' cheese was our side and it was very good!!! Super cheesy! There were chunks of bacon, none of which I found as fatty as what was on the burger. Total bill about $100.

The ambiance in here was so nice! We got a same day res and the service was quick! The burger was amazing (worth the hype) and the mac and cheese was to die for :) 10/10
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, service.
Atmosphere was well suited to our needs. Friends and I enjoyed coming here. Will be going back.

By FAR one of the BEST burgers I've ever had!!!! You need to try this place asap! We made reservations a couple weeks in advance and I highly recommend considering you probably won't get in if you don't. The place was adorable and it was the perfect date night/girls night out place! A little pricy but it was to be expected.

Overall pretty decent! Service was phenomenal, but I found their famous cheeseburger with egg, bacon to be underwhelming. Fried chic was delicious, however!

Server was wackadoodle! Took forever to get drinks and kept forgetting everything. But this review is mainly about the food! Top 5 burger of all time handsdown. I haven't been able to get the og 4Charles burger yet but maybe one day soon! ( I hear RH now has the same burger as well..?) It's big in here, lots of tables and loud, busy & fun. It's a vibe. The downstairs has a cool speakeasy that was closed unfortunately. Walking up I didn't even realize I was here, it's not well marked or maybe the pre-game drinks were hittin. Definitely worth it you haven't been. And I will return 100%. If you get the Mac n cheese you may want to ask for light bacon ( I love bacon but this amount was just overkill).
Be the first to ReplyStill a really good burger.
No longer my #1, but definitely still top 10. Came For lunch today and still have a great atmosphere. Service was awesome. I was debating getting something new and the server was kind enough to bring out a serving of the fried bologna for me to try. Got to be honest, not my favorite and I'm really glad I stuck with the burger. It had a very herbaceous flavor but paired with the meat and cheese, it was overwhelming and not my favorite. The burger was still yummy like I remembered and my guests I brought here really enjoyed their sandwiches. Fries and garlic aioli were good and the perfect amount of salt.

My boyfriend and I dined here for his bday! We started with a highland sour and bourbon old fashioned. The highland sour was good but nothing special. The old fashioned was standard. Pricey drinks but expected. We started with the bone marrow and steak tartare. I've never had either dish so I was super excited. Both were very delicious. The white toast that came with apps was amazing. I know it's just toast, but so yummy. I had the shaved prime ribs sandwich; my boyfriend had the double cheeseburger with a fried egg and bacon and we shared the bacon mac and cheese. The sandwich and mac and cheese were so good! The burger was good but $33 is a little steep, especially since it doesn't come with fries. The prime rib sandwich is also steep @ $36.99 with no side. We received a complimentary hot fudge sundae that came out with a candle which was nice. I was expecting to have to buy a dessert to get the candle. We also ended the night with pickle back shots. Service was good, not amazing. All in all a good but pricey dinner. Would I come here for a non-celebratory meal? Probably not; but a great spot for a splurge meal.

Reservation at 8:15, sat down 5-10 mins later, was not served food until after 10. The food was not worth a 2 hour wait. I also noted that it was me and my fiancés anniversary and asked if they could do something special, they did not. The other tables around us were given complimentary espresso martini shots and desserts. Worst part - my fiancé and I got food poisoning. Some apps, drinks and a burger was over $300. Do not recommend.

Still my favorite burger in NYC! Lives up to the hype and also highly recommend ordering the maple wings and bacon Gouda Mac and cheese. Both are incredible. Desserts are good but probably would skip next time.Follow me on Instagram & Tiktok for more food pics and recommendations: @global_grubs!!

I believe this is the same restaurant group as the infamous 4 Charles. For such a better price and easier to get reservation, the burger is very comparable. Adding on the egg and slices of thick cut bacon was a must! We also tried the prime rib sandwich as a starter, which was one of the best I've ever had. Comes with a whipped horseradish sauce that wasn't too overpowering at all. Along with that, we got the fries which are donned with gravy and a fried egg. This was good, but I'd probably pass on ordering this next time. We also ordered the mac & cheese with slices of bacon which was excellent! Great spot for a group of friends or date night. They also have a speakeasy like bar downstairs that seemed like a lot of fun.

Is the double cheeseburger one of NYC's absolute best? 100% yes and it is deserving of all 5 stars. Do you need to add bacon and egg? Probably not, I'd actually just opt for getting the mac n cheese as a starter instead (it has the bacon on it). Is the atmosphere nostalgic of a previous era in NYC's history? Yes. 3 stars have been removed due to our dining experience. We were a table of three. We ordered 3 burgers. We watched 4 tables seated 25 minutes after us sit, order, eat, pay and leave before we were served our meal. No apology from our waiter at any point. We sat at 7:45 and didn't leave until 10:15.

I can't say much more than this is the best burger I've ever had and I count the days until I can come back.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a birthday dinner for my fiancé and the service
This was a birthday dinner for my fiancé and the service was shockingly disappointing. I ordered a cocktail when they took our appetizer and dinner order. I had to flag two different staff down to check on my drink. Well after apps were done, our waiter, who made my drink recommendation to begin with, stops by and says, "I heard you ordered a Vida Cure?" I tell him that I ordered a while ago and he turns in frustration to go get it. Similarly with our soda orders, they offered my fiancé a refill and it took forever to get it back. I ordered us two gelatos and while I appreciate that they immediately brought one out with a candle for him, I finally got mine when he was done with his. And every time our server finally did come check on us, he literally would not look at us. He spoke at the air above us, scanning the room. When they cleared the apps, they took my fork and it was difficult to flag anyone down, someone finally that I was looking for something. For the price point, the coordination and service should have been much better. I was embarrassed. I still ended up leaving a 20% tip because this seems like a problem with the front of the house and I did not want to penalize the folks working hard in the back of the house because while the service left a lot to be desired, the food was amazing.

The ambience and decor of Au Cheval was very classy and modern. I came in on a Saturday with no reservation and they were able to accommodate AND even accommodate a sleeping baby without asking me to remove her from the stroller or fold the stroller. Needless to say, the waiters were amazing. General Jane Fried Chicken - didn't expect myself to like this so much but one bite into the chicken and i fell in love. The meat was super tender and juicy, but the sauce was the highlight. The mixture of the chili sauce with cilantro and sesame sauce was so perfect. It wasn't too spicy and also has a hint of sourness and together the combo was perfect. Double Cheeseburger - To be honest, the presentation was great especially the egg but other than that, it was a normal cheeseburger to me. Nothing too special to me but my husband enjoyed it. The only downside was, there wasn't a baby changing area in the bathroom.

Fried chicken skin could be crispier; maybe cause too much sauce ... the sauce was really nicely flavored though! The burgers are super juicy but definitely still not as good as 4Charles. The salad was crisp and nicely dressed!
Be the first to ReplyWas able to snag a reservation at 10pm on Valentine's Day
Was able to snag a reservation at 10pm on Valentine's Day for my hubby and I. The restaurant was packed and busy regardless of the time. We did have to wait over 20 minutes with reservations to be seated, and not sure if it was because of the busy evening but service was very slow. For that reason, my review is solely on their ambiance and food which I rate a 4/5. Double cheeseburger: Just order it. Must add egg and a slab of bacon for the "instagram version". Definitely something you can share with someone, but it is delicious. Most people visit this spot because of the burger so just order it. Probably ranked 3rd favorite dish. Kale Caesar: Cannot go wrong with a Caesar salad and we enjoyed their take on it. Zesty and lemony favor that is refreshing in between the other meals. Fried chicken sliders: One word. Bomb. Small portions for the $$ but it's was a perfect app to start with. Bacon/black pepper Mac and cheese: I wish I could take the whole plate home with me but we ate it all! This dish was honestly IMO better than the burger. It is very caloric LOL but packed with flavor. Must try. Shaved prime rib sandwich: second favorite dish. The meat was tender and honestly melted in my mouth. Truly better than the burger. Would recommend 100%. Chocolate cream pie: Rich, creamy pie. Homemade whipped cream was delish. Lots of chocolate personally was too rich for me, but hubby loved it. Oreo pie crust was a nice touch. Would rather try something else.

This spot really deserves its hype!! First, the ambiance- its a really cool, unique spot. The decor is fun and different. I was here for an event and the downstairs private room was great. The food was also very delicious. I think the fried chicken slider goes underrated! The desserts also were surprise winners- a GREAT key lime pie!
Be the first to ReplyDecent food with an adequate burger, however the service
Decent food with an adequate burger, however the service was among the worst I've ever experienced. The burger took over an hour to be delivered, with our waitress only checking in once during this period. Very disappointing, especially considering the price. Will not be in a hurry to return; the service makes you want to have a burger from McDonalds instead.

I wanted to order takeout for lunch on a weekday but their online ordering was closed so I called to see if I could. I was told that during busy times, they close their online ordering so the only way you could order takeout was if you sat at their bar. I arrived at their restaurant and was told, no I couldn't do that, but after stating that I just spoke to someone on the phone, they put me on the list and I was actually seated pretty quickly. I ordered a salmon egg toast and fries, and it came out faster than they related. When I got home, ten minutes later, it was still warm. The fries were nice and salty, which made up for the fact that they didn't have any sauces with the order. The toast with salmon and egg was quite salty, like the fries, which unlike the fries, was unexpected. I had to drink a lot of water, so I would avoid in the future.
Be the first to ReplyThe double cheeseburger was "everything".
Had the added egg and bacon. The key lime pie as well!Staff was super attentive, friendly and helpful. I advise just getting a seat at the bar if you're by yourself. Those reservations can be tricky!
Be the first to ReplyI've been here twice so far, with the first visit being
I've been here twice so far, with the first visit being slightly better than the second. I'll note there were a few things I preferred on first visit; there was a dry aged cheeseburger available but it's no longer. They've added a (ample amount of) dijonnaise sauce on their standard cheeseburger, and I'm not a fan. Though maybe I can ask for without? The bacon and egg isn't necessary also, but it still makes for a good burger and is perfect for Instagram. I've so far had the double cheeseburger, the once dry aged cheeseburger, shaved prime rib sandwich, bacon mac n cheese, charred broccoli, fries, General Jane's fried chicken, and chocolate creme pie. I liked their cheeseburger when it was without all the dijonnaise, and I did prefer the dry aged. Nonetheless, it's a solid burger whether with or without bacon and egg. The beef is borderline cooked medium but I prefer more medium rare. General Jane's is a great starter. Fries are okay, nothing to write home about. Shaved prime rib sandwich was a little dry and boring to me. I'd probably skip this. Charred broccoli was more on the steamed than charred side, but I did like the flavor. I really enjoyed their mac n cheese and kept going for more servings. Chocolate creme pie is a nice way to end things. Service was kind of slow on second visit, and the food took a while to arrive. I suggest coming on the earlier side of the evening as it just gets super busy. I do like the ambiance and the restaurant space in general. It's a large but somehow cozy space that's warm and inviting. I've been to their sister 4 Charles several times, and Au Cheval is comparatively a degree less good. Though if you have a hard time getting a resy at 4 Charles, this is not a bad alternative.
Be the first to ReplyGood dinner, fun vibes.
The matzah ball soup was incredible - the matzah ball itself is huge, and yet the texture is perfect. Light, fluffy, and nostalgic. The fried chicken sliders were excellent too. Main issue with the appetizers is that the sliders came out 5-10 minutes before the soup, meaning I was waiting with no food while my dining companion was eating alone. The double cheeseburger with an egg was good. I was expecting greatness based on the hype - it was a solid burger. The steak frites dish was tasty too - nicely seasoned and cooked. The vibes were lively, would be a fun place to come back with a group.
