I booked a seating at Automne to celebrate my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary and Mother's Day (U.S. celebrates on second Sunday in May). It was no small task to 1. find a Michelin starred restaurant open on a Sunday in Paris 2. find such a restaurant open and with availability 6 weeks in advance. When I discovered Automne had a spot open for 6 persons, I felt like it was divine intervention.We arrived a few minutes early for our 7:30pm seating to find the door locked. At 7:30pm the person that would eventually be our wait staff showed up for work. When we were finally let in, the staff still wasn't ready to take our order. We waited. Already this was a very different experience from the Michelin starred restaurants we have been to in the US and Europe. Honestly I chalked it up to everything in Paris being extremely slow and inefficient and thought nothing more of it. But if this happened in the U.S., this review would be more of a three star rating.We decided on the five course tasting menu. At most starred restaurants the 7+ course menus are way, way too much food. You end up not truly enjoying or appreciating what you are served because you are either too full of food or too drunk on wine.What we loved from the five courses:*The veal tartare was probably the best tartare I have ever had. It was served with a beautiful presentation of shared asparagus and pansies.*The seared duck was done to perfection. The skin was crispy yet meat was tender and juicy. It was served with a carrot and orange sauce. Perhaps these flavor combinations are a bit predictable, but it was executed nicely. The orange flavor was not overpowering.*The poached pear for dessert was very welcomed after over-indulging on the typical pastries of Paris that are loaded with sugar. It was served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate crisp and ginger. If you've never poached a pear at home, I will tell you that it is a slow process and can be frustrating. When dining out I really appreciate being served the things I know are difficult to prepare.Summary: It was impossible to find fault with the preparation of any of the dishes served. I find it shocking that the prices here are so reasonable. I highly recommend Automne for a satisfying meal paired with fantastic wines in an intimate setting.
