Babbo New York Reviews from The Last Year
my wife and i popped in here spur of moment for a little
my wife and i popped in here spur of moment for a little nostalgia trip. used to sit at the bar for pasta tasting menu, routinely. we were younger with less experienced pallates but definitely poorer than we are today. relevant setup. $120 + $80 for wine pairing 5 pasta courses + sorbet + dessert portions were less than 1/2 size of regular pastas. 3 small raviolis of ricotta with heavy butter. fair squid ink spaghettini with crab. nice abundant lump crab but in the end a silly dish cause crab doesn't integrate into pasta or sauce. sauce was oniony then squab liver ravioli. 3 of them. unctuous. but minuscule garganelli with mushroom. the shrooms were outstanding. sauce was basically just butter. and grana padano which is kinda life too short for that. but overall this was the best course then tag bolognese which was super lame. no ragu. just like ground meat. dessert was the high point. olive oil gelato with olive oil cake topped with olive oil and maldon. totally outasite. value poor. portions lame. not happy. won't be back. end of the era and was already uncomfortable continuing to patronize the place given the former proprietor is a rapist
Buyer Beware.
4 of us were celebrating our birthdays in the city. We chose Babbo because it seemed like a nice place to go to dinner and treat ourselves. They had a menu that offered an international woman's day bottle of wine for what appeared to be $50.00 so we gave it a try. See photo below. When bill arrived, they charged us $195 for a bottle of wine because they charged us by the ounce!!!! Ridiculous. Unclear. Manager said tough luck. A small gesture on the bill would have gone along way here. Just check the menu before you make same mistake we made. Place was pretty. Food was ok. Sommelier was condescending. Smallest 2nd floor bathroom I've ever seen. Very loud. There are better choices in the city for the price point.

My dad took me to Babbo when he was in town because it was one of his favorites when he lived in the city in the early 2000s! It was incredibly classy and my favorite part was the super knowledgable sommelier. The wine list was extensive and the sommelier was incredibly helpful in educating us about our options. We got tons of food, lots of appetizers, a salad, and then pasta for me. This was a little while ago so I can't fully recall what I got, but I remember really enjoying the food! Its a Greenwich Village staple and has kept up the quality of its food and service for so long, definitely worth a try at least once if you're in the city.

Amazing Dinner at Babbo
Fabulous! let's start with that. My husband and I went here on a Thursday night for dinner. Made a reservation well in advance for 7:30 pm. Seemed quiet at that time but filled up fast by 8:00. I had the best glass of white wine i have ever had (not cheap though, $32.00 for one glass) but it was worth the price. we started with burrata topped with a small dollop of caviar. it was amazing; melted in your mouth and he caviar gave it just the right hint of saltiness. I ordered the egg raviolo; never had that before and have always wanted to try it; came with a sage brown butter sauce and it was perfectly cooked. My husband had the rabbit bolognese papardelle. He loved it. Said it was one of the best pasta plates he has ever had. we shared the pistachio semi freddo for dessert; we don't usually order desert but decided to splurge and so happy we did. it was not only gorgeous to look at but so delicious. not too sweet. The service is definitely 5 start; very attentive but very discreet also. the total cost was about $300 but for a special night, well worth it.
To start, the food is excellent.
It is what you would expect from fine dining experience. What separates these establishments is the overall experience. That is where Babbo falls short. We felt rushed from the moment we sat down, we almost felt as if they over booked and were rushing us out. As we made clear from our pace, we wanted to slow things down and enjoy the evening. To be clear, our expectation wasn't to spend all night, but 2 or 2.5 hours which is reasonable for 3 people in my view. Additionally, the volume and selection of music was inappropriate. It wasn't blasting but it was noticeable and unpleasant selection. I really liked the food but the overall experience fell short. This was my third and last visit here. There are too other better choices to return here..
Food uneven.
The lamb tongue was good, but we had to send back the lobster spaghetttoni. The lobster pieces were overcooked and NOT fresh. The sauce also too thick Ambiance. The place was bombarded w exceptionally loud disco "music", 108 dbm,It affected the mood and the appetite. We requested to be seated at a quieter spot but the request was NOT honored. They attempted to lower the noise, but was still way too loud. Our waiter tried his best to mitigate the situation and was attentive . The management spoiled our evening by ignoring our request!
Don’t go there.
My friend booked a table for 5 people 1 month ago, specifically requesting the 7 fishes menu for Christmas Eve. When we arrived at the restaurant we discovered that the menu had not been reserved for us, that it was finished (at 8 pm, dinner time?!) , but that we could take dishes from the menu that were the same as the fixed price menu. Are you kidding us? So the dishes were there and the menu was not finished, it was finished at the fixed price. What a joke! We asked for explanations first to the waiter who proposed us the 375 dollars menu instead of 7 fishes menu at 135 (what?!) and then to the manager: really unpleasant, rude staff who invented a thousand excuses without logic (the menu was finished but the dishes were available on the menu, we had to pay a fee - never mentioned- to reserve the fixed menu etc.). No fee was mentioned on the website to reserve the 7 fishes menu, the restaurant called 2 times to confirm the reservation and did not say anything about this fee, despite the fact that we have requested the 7 fishes menu also over the phone. We felt scammed. Since it was Christmas Eve we stayed to have dinner because it was too late to change restaurant: food was disgusting, not fresh and overpriced, 2 people of my group had food poisoning that night, tables were to close, I could hear also whispers from the table behind me! Very rude staff. Never again. Do yourself a favor and don’t go, spend your money somewhere else.

Don't want to be sanctimonious, but i have eaten here close
Don't want to be sanctimonious, but i have eaten here close to 100 times (live in the WV and either get delivery or eat out - every night), and tonight was the worst dining experience of my life. Food is always great, but Nico (I think the manager), is a joke. He is really smug and dismissive. A lot of layers here, but the only one worth commenting on is that my wife has a severe nut allergy (that we informed the restaurant about, and they acknowledged), but they still served her a dessert with nuts as part of the Christmas Eve 7 fish tasting menu (which we had to fight to get, despite having a 5:30 reservation with two 3 year olds that I called about 3 times to be sure no issues and that we would get the tasting menu). A server came rushing out about 5 minutes after we got the dessert to inform us it had nuts (good thing - my wife only ate half of it - absurd). When we expressed this to Nico, he said, "you want to talk about this outside?" I said "are you kidding me?" Bastianich - Fire this bozo. This negligent service is unacceptable.
I first came to this restaurant shortly after it opened so
I first came to this restaurant shortly after it opened so probably around 1999 or so. I've been coming back occasionally since then. It deserves 5 stars just for the consistency of the food and service over the years. There are things to quibble about - the music is not great, the food is probably not the absolute best you can get in NYC, it's pretty touristy - but there's a reason it's been around for so long.
Not worth it
Excellent wine list. Attentive and courteous staff. However, though the menu sounds amazing, the food was just “good” (we had the beef carpaccio, gnocchi Gorgonzola and Short ribs). And the other reviews about the 90s music are spot on. Loud and not at all appropriate for the atmosphere. I expected more.
Best cheesecake I have ever had!
Such a lovely place with amazing food! Prices could bite a little bit, but it is worth it. The staff is also super nice. If you decide to go here, definitely take the ricotta cheesecake, because it is the best cheesecake I have ever had!
excellent
great food and service. weve been here a few times and have always been treated with a warm welcome. it isnt a cheap date but its always memorable. thanks guys!
Amazing food and service but why the loud rock music?
We had the pasta tasting with the Riserva Selection of wines which all four of us thought was amazing. The black spaghetti was so flavorful with balanced flavors of crab and chilis. I also really liked the garganelli (black truffle pesto) - the mushrooms had a slight resistance to the bite with big flavors. So yummy! My friends thought the the pappardelle bolognese was the best. And, of course, the pasta was perfectly prepared al dente. Each dish was beautifully presented, maybe 6 bites to each plate. There were a series of 5 plates for each of us. Plenty of food. After the meal we had what I believe was a raspberry sorbet as a palate cleanser. Excellent! We had several desserts including the olive oil cake. Unfortunately at that point I was too full to have more than small tastes but they were excellent as well. The pairing of the wines with the food was spot on. At each turn the sommelier talked us through the wines and the tastes that we could expect. We thought the sommelier was a great communicator - not too much, not too little - and very enthusiastic. The service was superb, everything I would expect from Babbo. We were attended to and never rushed. Excellent at every step. We did have one big problem: the music. The music that was played over the speakers was 70's rock, sometimes even hard rock. It was so loud that a couple of times we could hardly hear the sommelier. We asked the waiter and the sommelier if it could be turned down and they said they would do what they could. But it did not improve. Finally I got up and walked downstairs to talk to the manager. He told me that this style of music was preferred by the owner (meaning he could/would not change it) but he would see what he could do about the volume. Maybe it was turned down a little? I am not sure, but it definitely cast a shadow over the evening. The last time we were there I do not recall it being such a problem. Loud, head banging music is not what I want to hear when I am having a lovely dinner at Babbo. Our guests were European and it was even harder for them. We had to yell to hear each other during regular conversation which was awkward. This aspect of our evening was so disappointing, especially since no one seemed to be able to help us. None of us could understand why this was such a problem since it is so easily fixable. I would have given it 5 stars except for the music. Because of this I doubt we would return.
Down the Tubes - AVOID!
My wife and I are very disappointed with the way we were treated. We have lived in Manhattan since 1995 and been to Babbo at least a dozen times over the past 20 years. Most of the time we have been seated upstairs and enjoyed lovely meals, oftentimes trying the pasta or regular tasting menu along with the wine pairings. Overall, very memorable experiences. This time was different. Our table wasn’t ready when we arrived, with the host ‘pretending’ he could not find our reservation despite showing him the confirmation email on my smartphone. We were squeezed into a table in a narrow corridor — a true ‘no-man’s land’ next to the kitchen. The music was playing so loudly that we could not hear what the restaurant staff was saying. We politely asked if we could be seated upstairs and, without even checking availability, they told us “…that is not possible.” We asked if they could turn the music down a bit so we could hear the staff — and each other — but were told “…that’s how the owner likes it.” After a few minutes, we decided that trying to reason with the staff was a lost cause, so we stood up and left. It’s the only time in my life that I have left a restaurant before being presented with the menus. We walked 5 minutes and had a lovely meal at Gotham on 12th Street — tasty, creative food, open and airy environment, fresh new decor, attentive staff and a helpful Somelier. It is sad to see how Babbo, what used to be a special place where we enjoyed many wonderful meals with family and friends, has turned into an over-crowded, impossibly loud and dingy place with tone-deaf staff and awful service. With so many great restaurants in NYC, we will not be wasting our time or money at Babbo.
Never Disappoints!
My favorite Italian restaurant in the US. So delicious! I dream about their pastas. Don’t come here if you want Americanized Italian food. I’m a foodie who has traveled the world and lived in the foodie-centric SF Bay Area. This is authentic, real deal Italian that has never disappointed. I have been here many times and come here every time I am in New York. Most recently I had their Vongole pasta and their olive oil cake. Both superb. We were also recommended an excellent wine from Sardinia. The sommelier was very passionate and the service excellent. Batali I is no longer involved in the restaurant. The Bastianich’s now own and run the restaurant and I am very impressed with how they have maintained the quality.

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
