Terrible service, place is so small and dirty.
I would not go back. Bathroom had pee stains all over the place.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has a very cool vibe.
The inside is dimly lit, decorated elegantly, and an impressive wall of vinyls. I have been spoiled in the past with live DJ's spinning vinyls, but this location uses a record player. The drinks were tasty and packed a punch. We only came here for cocktails, but felt very pressured by staff to order food. Upon inquiring about the food, we were told that the menu items could only feed one person. Staff kept coming back and asking us and almost giving us attitude. It felt very stuffy and snooty and as if we were being watched.
Be the first to ReplyI LOVE this place sooooo much.
Definitely need to visit again soon. The food, service, and Ambiance are 10/10. It is a little bit on the pricey side but I think that's well deserved considering the experience you get. Apologies in advance for how often I am going to say the word "delicious." But OMG EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD!!! We started with drinks and got the Japanese connection as well as the Mezcal Coffee Negroni. These drinks were delish! We then got the Miso Salad and the Bread with Anchovy Dip (I think it was anchovy). I don't even really eat fish but both of these were delicious!!!! The Miso Salad is TO DIE FOR. It's a must try for SURE. I need to figure out how to recreate that at home because I think I would eat it every day if I could. We ended with the passion fruit spritz which was SO Unexpectedly DELICIOUS. It's so tart and not too sweet which was perfect for us. Also - the passion fruit seeds were crunchy and would pop which was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend checking out this spot if you're in the Marina/Cow Hollow area.

Party of three, made a reservation, ordered three cocktails and three items off the food menu. stayed for about 90 minutes. about 60 minutes in, we were approached by 4 separate staff members in a 5 minute period asking how our drinks were and whether we'd be interested in anything else. extremely disruptive service to our party's conversation, i guess trying to rush us out or to get us to spend more money. but we took the hint asked for the check which they prepared immediately, i prepared my card immediately and no one took it for 10 minutes. i had to get up to give it to them. cocktails themselves were above average and not too sweet. interesting recipes, good taste. but at the price ($26), you can find much much better cocktails at other establishments for less. the food was acceptable as well scallop carpaccio was great although might have been a little icy. halibut was acceptable but nothing noteworthy. the kabocha truffle tart was also just okay. overall, confusing and disruptive service, and overpriced food and drinks.
Be the first to ReplyThis review is for the cocktails only.
They were mediocre at best. We'll start there... the lemon gin drink was so syrupy and overly sweet it tasted like a basement umeshu that your cousin made in college. The Negroni was... fine. 26 dollars fine? No. The flavor was sub par (not in a positive golf way) and was poorly blended. I was expecting much better quality from the other reviews and photos but the flavor was lackluster with both drinks and a big disappointment. The decor was beautiful and well done (minus the bathroom... definitely needs a solid once over more than opening and closing) but the entire atmosphere overall was stuffy and boring. Great spot for an Instagram photo, not for a cocktail.

Excellent bar service, creative/craft cocktails and unique and delicious bar bites -is how I would describe a typical experience at Bar Crenn! Had a fantastic time and you pay for quality. Check it out and be ready to have a fun time. A small place so reservation is a must.

Food and wine pairing for my birthday! Amazing experience and food, friendly staff, will surely return. Loved the music too!

We stopped in midweek on the off chance we could be seated just for dessert. We were pleasantly surprised they had an open table and were treated to an amazing three course dessert selection. The wine was delicious as well.
Be the first to Replymy bf and I came here for the UPSIDE experience.
a friend from college recently promoted the UPSIDE chicken on their IG influencer account. I immediately emailed the bar to see how to make a res for it. I was told reservations are released at a certain time on a certain day of the month, and UPSIDE reservations are available only on the first saturday of the month. I'm so glad we were able to secure a res! first, the door to enter is confusing. use the horizontal (normal) handle under the big vertical decorative one lol. now you're in. it's dim, not dark. basically all staff is in suits and everyone looks hella chic, professional, and cool. it's a good noise level, leaning a little muted, thanks to the decor. seating arrangements look set up for intimate parties, but functionally some work better than others. service was fantastic. staff did a great job explaining things and offering suggestions. I don't like to drink alcohol bc I don't like the taste of it, and bar crenn has a great NA selection. I love that they give mocktails so much attention and intention. lets people still have the drinking experience without the alcohol. my bf and I actually liked my NA drink more than his cocktail. (marginally) since we reserved the UPSIDE experience, we were limited to ordering a la carte off the set menu. we ordered everything from the menu, except the caviar service. the UPSIDE chicken is wild. tastes and looks like chicken, texture is like chicken. skin was perfectly crispy and flavor was *there*. I'd eat UPSIDE chicken instead of an actual chicken any day. I wasn't able to tell the difference. I have no notes about anything else we ordered, just that I was amazed, astounded, and in awe. truly a great experience and I can't stop recommending bar crenn x UPSIDE to my friends.

Since my last visit in 2019, Bar Crenn underwent an interior makeover and earned its first Michelin star. Bar Crenn now mostly operates as a pre fixe experience at the bar, known as Le Comptoir Crenn. They offer two seatings per evening. The menu presented 8 pescatarian and dairy free dishes. We opted for the wine pairing as well, which made this experience even more expensive. We saw a guest received a non-alcoholic option which was comprised of zero-proof cocktails. They do take walk-ins to enjoy a light snacks and drinks at the lounge seating. The service was excellent. Friendly, not stuffy and very conversational. That is what they are aiming with the bar seating experience. They encourage conversation and questions during service. The dishes on our menu included: + Bleu Belle Farm tomato tar + Beet, caviar and seed cracker (this was one of my favorites. The beets were fermented and paired beautifully with the caviar and the wine) + Lobster mushroom bao bun +Crispy rice and poached uni + King Crab and Abalone XO sauce + Abalone Dry aged trout +Paradise spritz for dessert Chef Crenn's dedication to sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients means there is definitely of thought and consideration that goes into the menu. Overall, this was a lovely experience. The seamless service from the minute we walked through the very last dish was without a doubt 5-stars. The price point is where I'm a little dubious, namely for the wine pairing which was an additional $165 per person.

We got in! and we so amazed by the ambience, the service and wine advice. The small plates were to die for and we'll definitely be back. Perfect for a special occasion.. we have never had such gourmet food in a living room environment.
Be the first to ReplyMy first experience with Dominique Crenn's restaurants.
The bar is set up to be a different experience from the main dining restaurant(which is impossible to get resy). You have a set menu and must also reserve a alcoholic or non alcoholic pairing. We went with the alcoholic but could've easily had the meal without any pairing. Each dish was intricately designed and made. Didn't get much of a French feel more of a Mexican and Asian influence. Didn't really see a theme or story going from dish to dish so the experience was a bit of a miss for me overall. The bar is also used in the main dining experience as well, that's why the time line of bar menu is strictly enforced. Would I try Crenn's main restaurant, yes I would give it a go. Would I come back to the Bar, likely no. Didn't really support the price tag in my experience.
Be the first to ReplyI came here for my birthday yesterday and left quite
I came here for my birthday yesterday and left quite disappointed. I really wanted to like it as I love watching Dominique Crenn cook in competitions. I think the problem was expectations.First, the Comptoir experience says "The pescatarian menu will be cooked by our chef team, live at the counter." This made me think we were going to be sitting chefs counter style, but the dishes are cooked in the Atelier Crenn kitchen and then the chef will bring the dishes out in front of you to finish plating or saucing. Second, you are required to get a beverage pairing, wine or non-alcoholic. I think we only got like two or three wines in the pairings. One was a terrible sake that the sommelier said he wasn't fond of, but thought would pair well with the bao dish. When I didn't finish it, I asked for it to be taken away and nothing was said to me. No, oh not for you? I did get a kombucha that was absolutely delicious. Maybe if the sake didn't taste like soy sauce to me, I wouldn't have wished we got all wines instead. Or wish I had been asked if I disliked it and wanted a different drink instead. Third, I was expecting to be asked if we were there for a special occasion. When we went to Acquerello last year, we were asked and I ended up with a birthday card and a birthday dessert. At Bar Crenn, we were never asked. I wonder if they knew it was my birthday, if we would have gotten better service. We were seated in the middle between two other couples and it felt like the other couples got more attention and we were looked over. The waiter and the sommelier did include us as long as it was a question they had already asked another couple. Aside from expectations, I felt like there was an air of arrogance. The waiter and sommelier were bragging about the food they received from the kitchen compared to other restaurants they had worked. There are no accommodations for dietary restrictions. Yes, they tell you this beforehand, but as a result, one of the other diners ate tomatoes and cantaloupe despite not liking them. The dishes were good but he came to the conclusion he must not like tomatoes. I felt the same way about the cheese course, tho I did not like the cheese. Also, apparently the average rating on the cheese course is 2-3, but the kitchen continues to serve it. The boyfriend also does not like tomatoes and he found the tomato tart delicious but then was also served a tomato soda that he disliked. Ironically, the tomato soda was the only thing they kept from the menu of someone that came from Eleven Madison Park (name drop) to help with the non-alcoholic pairings. There was also a point in the night where they had us choose knives to use. These knives come from someone who believes in sustainability and has a 8 year wait-time. It was an interesting tidbit but also just contributed to the whole experience feeling like I was supposed to be there to fangirl the restaurant versus it being about the customer and what they want. The food dishes were good, but I found I could kind of take it or leave it. Dishes I remember were the tomato tart, the crab tacos, the bao, abalone au poivre, amberjack. The crab tacos were amazing but were they the best tacos I've ever had? No. And that's kind of how I felt about the other dishes more or less. I think maybe the lesson to be taken is to never sit bar counter style at a Michelin star restaurant, especially if you are expecting to be doted on for your birthday.

My recent experience at Bar Crenn was like being in a dream, and I'm still processing how lovely the entire evening went. I was able to reserve a place through my credit card company, who hosted a private event and did a buyout of both Bar Crenn and Atelier Crenn (which I'll review separately). This was a bit different, as we did not order food or drinks off the menu; instead, this was a pre-event time for canapés and champagne. The champagne was wonderful (both a white and rosé were offered) and glasses were constantly refilled by the amazingly attentive staff. Friendly staff also walked around with the three canapés: a pastry filled with crème frâiche and topped with a heaping amount of caviar; a puff pastry filled with a light cheese and topped with truffle shavings; and a seaweed cracked topped with (I believe) halibut. I can't pick just one as a favorite, as they were all delicious. What made the night truly special was getting to meet Chef Crenn herself. She mingled with guests and never made the conversation feel rushed. It was lovely to hear about her plans for her next restaurant and her hopes for the restaurant industry (and hospitality industry in general) to change to better care for its employees.
Be the first to ReplyI've been visiting all of the Crenn's for years now.
Dominique is very special and so sincerely talented and also humble. Her staff radiates this with their special talents. The food is by far the best I've tried and I've been to many Michelin star restaurants. I honestly think the pescatarian and vegetarian cuisine allows you to not be so full and allows you to appreciate food for what it is and all of the flavors it has to offer. I rate her higher than French Laundry for sure!

Made a reservation for an early weekday dinner here, pre-pandemic - when I arrived it was clear that reservation wasn't actually necessary as no one else was there for a good 15 minutes, until other customers arrived. The waitstaff were polite, though they were a bit pushy and asked me to order drinks a few times times, even after I said I wasn't that interested. I tried a variety of dishes - the ones that stood out to me were the brioche (the same that they serve in Crenn's other restaurants) and an egg dish with mousse and caviar, served inside part of an egg shell. Everything was flavorful, though the price really reflects the Michellin star prestige and fancy/fresh ingredients and preparation, and not the amount of food you get. I'm happy to have eaten here and had the experience.

I came here in January (to celebrate my birthday), but have found some extra time on my hands with SIP, so better late than never....While the food may be better than mediocre (3.5 stars for just the food), why I provided a haircut for my overall review is due to one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb the whole time we were at the restaurant - abysmal service. I came to dinner with a mild headache, and as a result wasn't in the mood for any alcohol. Our waiter, on the other hand, was only too eager to get us to commit to a wine pairing with our meal and when I gently told him I wasn't interested he gave me this look of utter disapproval and bellowed "What? No alcohol?" Service only went downhill from there, as the waitstaff realized that our overall tab (and hence, their tip which is based off a % of the bill) wouldn't be inflated by the addition of their ridiculously marked up prices for wine. Just to think I wasted my last fine dining experience before SIP at this establishment still pisses me off today....
Be the first to ReplyWe head to Bar Crenn for our first San Francisco meal.
This is one of Chef Dominique Crenn's three restaurants. It's designed to reflect the elegance of a French winebar and received one Michelin Star. Her signature restaurant, Atelier Crenn, located next door, received three Michelin Stars. We start with Crème de Cassis and dry cider which are encased in white chocolate. Next we are served Oyster & Shallot and then Truffle Custard (which contains an amazing farm fresh egg yolk). We are offered a choice of Baguette and Sourdough. The butter has a subtle blue cheese taste. Abalone & Sauerkraut, Mushroom Ravioli and Broccoli & Onion finish the entrees. The menu focuses heavily on fish. For dessert, Quince (a fruit ice, palate cleanser), Apple (a crunchy shell filled with chopped apples and caramel) and Mignardises (a box of decadent chocolates).

Bar Crenn never fails to surprise and deliver! Oh my goodness! The food, service and wine are spectacular! I love the " informal " seating idea too. The whole vibe is amazing. The food is outstanding. Treat yourself and someone you love to dinner here!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic from start to finish.
I came in with high expectations and left absolutely astonished. Service was more than I could've asked for without being overly much. Knowledgeable staff helped make choosing wines painless with perfect course pairings. Chef Dominique Crenn has a way of painting a picture with every menu and this was no exception. Thoroughly blown away. Cannot recommend enough.

We walked in on a Tuesday night, the staff was very nice in accommodating us at the bar counter, specially if you consider a party of four with no reservation at 10pm... The menu is pretty limited and few items were not available, but is understandable considering that was late, and honestly is the place to treat yourself with a glass of wine along with some nibbles, rather then a proper dinner. The food and the presentation reflects the reputation of the name, the mise en place minimalist and stylish, the decor warm and beautiful, I really admired the painting on the wall but I candidly didn't understand the library on the corner. The staff is professional, as you can expect, but turned to be less formal and more friendly over the time, probably an eccentric artist in pur party helped to smooth the conversations... until late! We enjoyed a bottle of champagne and ordered almost everything on the menu, except for the oysters and the caviar. A special note for the brioche at buerre, classic and perfect, and the tart au chocolate.
Be the first to ReplyI came here on a Saturday night.
The food was on point. We had pretty much everything on the menu aside from 1 item that was sold out. Great service at this place but I would like to add one note to improve on. When I made a reservation Bar Crenn sent me an email asking me a few questions. I answered them and one of the questions asked what I was celebrating. I let them know I was taking my gf to a nice dinner because she had just become a Pharmacist. None of the staff seemed to know or acknowledge this. I was confused as to why Bar Crenn had me answer their questions if in fact it didn't matter.
Be the first to ReplyLeft a lot to be desired, and what a bummer.
Beautiful decor, but found the service to be lacking. Maybe it was an off night?
Be the first to ReplyWe went to Bar Crenn for my wife's birthday today.
We were looking forward to it based on the reviews and the months of stalking she did to secure a reservation. However, there were a lot of things about this dining experience that did not click for me, especially at this price point. Let's start out with the reservation process. I understand that some places are in demand and you have to wait your turn in line. But they require a $500 prepayment along with the reservation. I would prefer a $100-$200 cancellation fee. How do I know that the surprise menu upon dining will be the same yummy food that I read about in these reviews? I've never had to do that before - not at Saison, French Laundry, La Folie, Coi, or any other restaurant for that matter. And I'm not just talking about French restaurants. The one thing that I really look out for in restaurants in addition to the food is the service. I found the environment to be stuffy, and the atmosphere was not very welcoming. Sure, fine dining involves a bit of formality. Being born and raised in San Francisco, there have been many wonderful restaurants that have come and gone. And despite very formal environments, the people in those restaurants can make you feel like you are right at home. Not that we expect to be treated like royalty, but at the very least like Harry and Meghan after losing their royal titles. Victor and the lady with the short hair and tattoos seemed fine, but there was a stiffness and sizing up vibe from the others. Sometimes, we might not order more wine at dinner if there is a long drive ahead of us. While we were not dressed casually, we were not wearing suits or evening gowns either. But most fancy restaurants will not size you up for that. Of course, we are in the Marina district, so there will be some level of superficial judgment I suppose. On a positive note, there were some dishes that I thoroughly enjoyed. I liked the trout (main course) and the abalone the best. The bone marrow custard was also quite tasty. The presentation of all the dishes was excellent. There was definitely a level of care in their preparation, matching and presentation. For me, the other dishes that I did not mention above did not provide the same level of joy as the trout or the abalone, or the bone marrow. One other pleasant surprise is the apple-themed dessert, which is often botched by other fancy restaurants. In all, while still a very solid dining experience, there are other restaurants that I have liked better (food and service) that did not require extensive stalking + a $500 prepayment. Also, I have felt much more welcome at other restaurants. I often say that nice restaurants get a bad rap for people thinking that they are stuffy. In this case, perhaps they are right.
Be the first to ReplyThe almighty legend, Dominique Crenn, the FIRST and ONLY
The almighty legend, Dominique Crenn, the FIRST and ONLY woman in America to obtain THREE Michelin stars. Such an incredible feat to accomplish, and an inspiration to young women and girls from all walks of life that that goes to show any dream is achievable!! As a woman who is all about empowering other women, this achievement alone had me in awe of Ms. Crenn and this empire she's created. For my birthday, my baby daddy attempted to surprise me by taking me to Atlier, but failed to get reservations (A for effort), but did get reservations to her other restaurant, enter Bar Crenn, 1 Michelin star. Upon entering the restaurant, it is very quaint and cozy. The decor is rustic, antique and classy- from the chandeliers, tables/chairs and book cases. We started off with freshly brewed tea (a must) before we began our evening. Now the food... we ordered the eggs, oysters and brioche accompanied by their house made butter spread, main courses were the pasta and the duck breast. For dessert, I couldn't choose between two items so we ended up getting both. Servers were attentive and made certain it was a wonderful dining experience. BRAVA!! TRULY INCRENNIBLE!!!
