Dear Michelin, I have considered you a trustworthy guide to exceptional dining for the majority of my 54 years on the planet. Tonight, that trust has been compromised. My fiancé made reservations this evening for Binchoyaki Sacramento based on her “hit list” of Michelin blessed recommendations for 6:15. We arrived at 6 and standing outside met Cathy, the hostess. We had reserved the bar and walked in to the restaurant and saw the 2 open chairs at the bar but were told to check in with Cathy who told us that we would be seated at 6:15 like our reservation. The patio was 50% full and another couple came a few minutes later with a 6:30 reservation and consistently, she told them that they would be seated at 6:30. At 6:15 she informed us that masks were mandatory and although I am a double vaccinated healthcare employee I agreed to mask to our seats at the bar. Over ten patrons inside including the bar were unmasked and I took my mask off after being seated and she said that we needed to mask until we were served. There were many non consuming unmasked patrons inside and I asked if that was reasonable and recommended we leave to my fiancé when she shared that it would be $25 per person to leave at that point. Stunned I agreed to stay just to see what the extent of this madness would expose. I asked what law existed now dictating masks and she responded that I was “scaring her” and should stop. I stopped. Our server was great. I didn’t get her name but she said our food would be amazing and explained the menus. Unmasked we ordered a sake and a beer and put together our order. After ordering Cathy returned to us and said that I needed to stop looking at her because it was making her uncomfortable. I had not looked at her at all. At this point I was shocked and confused. We placed our order and subsequently watched the staff prepare the grilled items. I saw 3 different people handle raw meat and either open the refrigerator in the open prep area or switch to vegetables, none gloved. The grill was covered in aluminum foil and 3 cooks shared a very small space with 4-5 staff passing between during our 20 minutes there. We asked our server to prepare our order to go and paid. What we received (for $90) was 7 ounces of protein (I weighed it when I got home because it was ridiculous) and sauce and garnish. The chicken and steak were unseasoned and overcooked. The sushi was excellent. The order was not a reasonable portion for 1 person. I have lived here and dined extensively for many years and I have never experienced this level of ineptitude and disregard for customer service. On top of everything, the gratuity was included with the bill which has never been the case for a party of 2 in any city in my entire life, exacerbated by the experience and the threat of a $50 charge for leaving prior to ordering because of a clueless and rude employee. This restaurant does not deserve to be in the company of the fine restaurants our city is fortunate enough to provide. I hope this is a unique example of a restaurant that has been spectacular then terribly fallen after the rating. If not, it does compromise our interest in using your guide as a reliable benchmark. Thanks,

We tried five dishes in order as follows: Blistered Pepper Plate-Thin skin, great taste with a little heat. Would be great with sake but we were not drinking this day. Grilled Chicken Salad with Peaches and Grapes- Initially I was not prepared for a hot chicken on a cool bed of salad but was pleasantly surprised. Yes, the peaches pared well with the chicken and greens. So did the grapes! The apple dressing with fennel and pesto. Don’t rush savoring this dish. The pesto was not your everyday Italian version. It was more polite and a conversation piece. Charred chicken perfectly prepared. Basil Gindara Misoyaki-Finely shaved leeks mounded over Black Cod with slivers of leaks. This was the first time and dare to say not my last time tasting this buttery fish. This could have been the best fish I have had in years! Kaisen ramen- Incredible umami throughout. The Asiago cheese was different but it worked well. The noodles were Al dente and wonderful. We ordered the onigiri over the grill to honestly get some rice to eat with ramen as dishes are tending to be saltier in my old age. Unfortunately we did not specify how it would be prepared and it came with teriyaki sauce. I had not had a charcoal cooked rice ball before but it was good. As you can tell, all five dishes were prepared over the cedar chips and we were not disappointed. We had been anxious to eat here since it opened and would highly recommend the food the service.

What a great littleJapanese style bbq place. We sat at the bar and it felt like being in Okayama! Andrew was great as was the food. This place really exceeded my expectations for this type of restaurant in Sacramento. Very good!

Remember to make a reservation. If you walk in you’ll get the coldest outdoor table even if there are warmer places.

Talk about choices, good choices. Shared plates, so come with friends you have similar food taste. We had chicken liver, whole snapper, chicken thigh, shishito peppers, pork sausage, sashimi. All top notch. Service is efficient and friendly. This is a popular spot and they don't take reservations. We arrived at 6 on a Friday and were seated immediately. Soon after, the place filled up. We will be back again soon to try other dishes.

This restaurant gets excellent reviews for good reason. We went with another couple and shared several starters and mains - the best way to taste several items on the menu. Without exception we loved it all. Our server was nice and attentive. After the meal we were surprised at how reasonable the bill was for the amount and quantity of food. What can be better than that? This is now our favorite Japanese restaurant.

This is my favorite type of place: you can get all the types of Japanese foods you crave. Sushi? Yep. Skewers? Absolutely. Ramen? Also that. Diane N kept us filled with mainly skewers (you can order with the soy, which is tare, or salt, which is shio, for many of the foods). We had chicken, duck, prawn, hamachi, potato with caviar, as well as yumminess from the kitchen in the form of potato salad, shrimp fritter, and fried chicken. I need to go back over and over. HINT: go early, like 5pm, to guarantee seating, and sit by the bar to watch the magic. Plenty of free street parking as well on W Street.

Don Hamachi. Two versions and both delicious. So much to try!! Sake and delicious beer on tap. Service is quick and excellent. Fun crew, great food.
A favorite in town.
Non-Existent Service
Well, the best that I can say is that the food did look good and smelled nice. We would have loved to have tried it, but, unfortunately, we had to leave after waiting at the front entry area for 23 minutes without being acknowledged or greeted by anyone in the staff. On 7 separate occasions, servers and hostesses walked right by us to the front area and the register. Without even acknowledging us, asking if we needed a menu, explaining the wait time or even saying hello! That’s inexcusable even for a busy Saturday night. We’re originally waiting behind a party of two, that was promptly seated at an open bar space and a party of 3 that seemed to have also been left to their own devices. 15 minutes into our wait, I went to the bar counter and asked if I could see a menu for a to go order as I didn’t want to just reach across the table without asking(WhichI I was provided with after the young lady quipped “Yeah, don’t do that. That would be a little creepy”) A little Inappropriate, but just an awkward attempt at humor, so no harm done. During this time another party of 5 trickled in who were also not greeted by anyone. After 20 minutes passed, a hostess/server came to the front and greeted the party of 5 that came in after us. Then talked to the party of 3 that were waiting just before us explaining. How busy it was, and that it was difficult to find a table without reservations in a Saturday night. She walked right by us to go back to the bar counter without even saying helllo or any least bothering to give us the same greeting. After that we just took our business and appetites elsewhere. It’s not like we were poorly dressed, disruptive, or demanding patrons. Hell, no one went to the effort to even talk to us, so we really didn’t have a chance to say anything! In my 7 plus years of living in Sacramento, I’ve experienced all different levels of service from fantastic to poor, but have never experienced absolutely zero service at what, judging by the other reviews, seems to be a successful restaurant. It takes just a minute to say hi, or at least tell us, you’re extremely busy and will be back to check on us when you get a moment. Totally acceptable on a busy night. What isn’t acceptable is being completely ignored. Very disappointing.

Grilled hamachi, saba, chicken, eggplant, Shishido peppers, okra, and the sweet potato with a lightly spiced butter and creme franchise were beautifully grilled. The sauces paired with each were so tasty while not masking the flavor so each entree. We ate these at lunch time, so got a table right away. Street parking was easy at that time, too. We were only in Sacramento for a weekend, but considered returning during the same trip. Service was friendly and most helpful. The authenticity of food and prep was wonderful.

Sat eve with another couple. Service a bit slow but very friendly. Plates other than noodles small and delicious. Some of the ingredients are not for the faint of heart, but one can go for them or maneuver around them. Pretty much everything was interestingly seasoned and very tasty. Definitely will go again.

If you want great food this is the place. Atmosphere is very basic, but it is true to the South Side neighborhood. You'll want to order all the things on the menu. Go with a group of four so you can try most of them. Nice beer selection too. Also open late night.
