Three of us stopped by for dinner at prime time on a busy Saturday night. Because we had made an initial reservation for two people and then added a third diner, we were sent off for reeducation in a bar booth. This was actually fine -- we had adequate space and were not assaulted by nearby noisy conversations. In fact, there was plenty of good people watching in the bar, and of course you can order from the dinner menu.Birdie G's lives in its own culinary world, but it's an OK world to inhabit: you risk little by placing yourself in the hands of the chef(s). Looking at the menu ahead of time, I was attracted immediately by the Pickle Chick. Because there are only 14 available each evening (!), I phoned the restaurant when their lines opened in late afternoon and tried to reserve a PC. "We don't do that" was the long and short of their answer, but I was assured that my chances of snagging one of the coveted chicks were excellent if I requested one as soon as we were seated. When I did exactly that, all the pickled chicks had already flown the coop. To get over my disappointment, I volunteered that a lemon pepper chicken would be an adequate substitute. But of course it wasn't really anything like a substitute because I was already fixated on the pickle and didn't like that some carpet had been yanked from other me.Looking further at the menu, I spotted a bunch of well-chosen wines from around the world (California, Oregon, Italy, France, Spain...) as well as a variety of dishes to order that looked as if they could satisfy all sorts of tastes and appetites. Our server trotted over and explained to us the basics of how small plates are supposed to work; he recommended that we order six dishes for the three of us and share everything. We ordered six dishes, but shared nothing. I don't know exactly how that came to be; maybe we didn't like being given instructions. I thoroughly enjoyed the "tinned" mussels (which were in fact served in a tin) and the aforementioned non-pickled chicken. I can't say that I ate a balanced meal (which included no salad and only a faint suggestion of vegetables), but I did like the food and the orange wine that I ordered to go with it.The three of us spent around $270 (including tax and tip) inside the restaurant and also doled out additional dollars for the valet parking. Coming from the SF Bay Area, I found that Birdie G's represented an excellent start to my LoCal visit.
