Black Whale Bar & Fish House Beach Haven Reviews
Had the best steamers here the other night.
They gave me a ton since the steamers were small, which I happen to love. They were tender and juicy and satisfying. Service was also great. We had a reservation for the next evening but they accommodated us since the "no reservation restaurant" we were planning for was closed. They just cancelled our reservation for the next night. Thank you!
This apparently the most popular restaurant in Beach Haven
This apparently the most popular restaurant in Beach Haven and getting in without a reservation is not easy. We were fortunate that the owners of the B&B we stayed at have an in with the restaurant. This is a family friendly restaurant so if you don't mind the noise and children running around put this on your list. The food and drinks were acceptable but not anything special. I had maple glazed scallops with a side of beans and rice. It was just ok. Service was also acceptable given the crowd and loose children. Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu.

Best salad dressing- ever!?! The food is reliably wonderful, fresh and delicious. Our family of 4 has enjoyed coming every year- and even though we had to get online at midnight 3 weeks before we came to LBI to get a reservation, it's all worth it. Great atmosphere, great service. Everyone is happy! Thanks Black Whale for another memorable vacation dinner!
Outstanding food, reasonable prices and a seasoned staff
Outstanding food, reasonable prices and a seasoned staff that are amazing. This is my go-to restaurant when I visit the beautiful Long Beach Island!
There was a couple things that need to be worked on for one
There was a couple things that need to be worked on for one the wait was beyond ridiculous, we waited almost 2 hours for a table and then another 45 minutes for any food. The fat lady up front always said something different which didn't help. The restaurant itself was so god damn loud and crowded I couldn't hear myself think. I left with a headache and after all that the food wasn't anything great. Our server walked past our table so many times but trying to get her attention was a problem becasue of how loud it was. Very disappointed. You guys need to do better.
The popular local bar and place to be.
Some of th bet and freshest seafood restaurants on LBI. Service is excellent. Reserve your spot at the Black whale and enjoy!
My issue with this establishment has to do with a private
My issue with this establishment has to do with a private event I booked. While the food and servers at the event were very good, the event coordinator Linda, was not. She was the opposite of accomodating. I booked the event there because it has a private room & because of the reputation of good food. The party was for about 30 people and I was charged a hefty room fee. There was a very long list of things that were NOT ALLOWED as far as bringing in decorations. I did not have a problem since I only asked to bring flowers. When I asked if they provided individual menus or place cards I was told they did not. Therefore, I purchased my own and asked to drop off the flowers for each table, menus & place cards a couple of hours before the event. The event coordinator then wanted to know who would be placing the said menus on the tables or the place cards on the entry table. When I responded that given the cost of the event I assumed the staff would, the response was that there was usually an additional charge but an exception would be made; she also said the place cards would have to be provided in alphabetical order...like she was doing me a huge favor! When we arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes earlier than the start time, the bartender in the room (for which I had to pay extra for) asked if my husband or I would like a beverage. After he handed us our drinks one of the servers nervously asked "does Linda know they are here?" She looked very anxious & immediately left the room. The bartender did the same. I might add that table settings were non existent. Plates were in small piles in rows across the tables with napkin & utensils rolled up on top as if the tables were waiting to be set. The only "place settings" were the menus I had provided. At 5 o'clock, the event coordinator comes into the room to introduce herself and explain how she has to approve of what customers want to do as far as decor because people have apparently folded napkins in ways she does not like or some ridiculous thing; this was unsolicited - I had not asked for anything special. The final straw was we were told we had to end the party promptly at 8pm because they was ANOTHER PARTY WAITING. Meanwhile, when we booked the room all that was said was if we went over the allotted time there would be an extra charge. Long story short, have your special event somewhere else...you can pay top dollar in a lot of restaurants where you will be treated better.
As a home owner on the island this place has awesome food.
Even teh salad with teh two dressings they have is amazing and I am not a salad guy. Make a reservation and you will be satisfied for sure.

Go here for the ranch salad dressing and take some home to go! This was our first time trying this restaurant without our kids eating with us. My sons refuse to return here but we went late and sat outside, and we had a fantastic and delightful waiter that helped us navigate the menu. It was nice and quiet outside. We started with the salad, artichoke dip, tuna spring rolls, and general tsos cauliflower. I was extremely disappointed that for 5 little tiny pieces of cauliflower, a little rice drowned in sauce and onions cost $26. Thank god I didn't get that for my main and we did it as an appetizer that the five of us could share but we all only had one little piece each of the cauliflower. The price of that dish or the quantity needs to seriously be reevaluated. I had the shrimp scallop Santa Cruz and the scallops were super fresh and delicious. That dish is so large and filling...quite the opposite of the general tsos! It was really good but what will keep me returning is really the ranch dressing. Supposedly you mix the garlic ranch with the balsamic but I couldn't do it. I'd come back just for the salad. The other meals were good but nothing truly knocked my socks off. ****** My son wrote this last year but I never published it: So I am 13 years old and this might be the worst food I've ever eaten the dungeon's crab was so bad I rather eat literally mac Donald's and had hair on it like all over it and it was really loud in here too I would put 1 star but my mom wouldn't; never coming back here until I die
Sea Bass here has always been excellent but that was taken
Sea Bass here has always been excellent but that was taken off the menu for some reason. We ordered the Halibut and were truly surprised how poorly prepared this $40 dish was...the fish had been cooked to death and had almost no sauce and didn't match the menu description. To the restaurants credit the dish was immediately replaced so a solid response. The lobster rolls seemed smaller on this visit as well...this is a huge disappointment as our past experiences have been better but we felt something had changed and not for the better!
Not worth the hype.
Service was okay, not very welcoming or friendly to guests. Despite the waitress noting that a meal would be okay for a certain diet, it turned out not to be. Food was standard. There was little to no crab in the crab soup. Atmosphere was loud and crowded.
Absolutely unremarkable meal for it an incredibly inflated
Absolutely unremarkable meal for it an incredibly inflated price. The halibut special that I ordered was completely overcooked and dried to the bone and served over a bed of pasta, which look like it was covered with Ragu sauce. Crabcakes were mostly filler and the french fries were tasteless, cold and overcooked.
Such a smooth night having dinner with our group of 16.
We sat quickly, then had very easy flow of ordering, bringing drinks, then apps, and finally main meals...super efficient. In addition, the menu is expansive and reasonable and everyone spoke highly of the food. So all in all a good experience especially for a large group, highly recommend compared to similar places in that area of beach haven.

The service was great! The food is delicious! The salad dressings are absolutely amazing! The ambiance could use some improvement. I do recommend this restaurant!
The Black Whale is THE place in LBI
The Black Whale has never disappointed us. We haven’t been back in almost ten years to this great restaurant because when we lived in Philly and spent almost every summer in LBI this was our favorite spot. So when we had the opportunity to be back East, we knew we would be in LBI and at the Black Whale. It is a popular place for lots of reasons. Great bar, excellent food, wonderful staff and a great atmosphere. We had the soft shells, fish & chips, crab & artichoke dip, key lime pie, Hendricks martinis, and more! It was a celebration after all. Kudos to Molly B, our server, who helped make our return here so perfect. We know we will return at some point once again with the assurance of a great dining experience!
Satisfying meal and atmosphere
Usually come here every year. Never disappointed. Food is solid and waiter -Tim was attentive just enough and friendly. Wife had scallops and were excellent. I had crab cakes and although very tasty , they seemed a bit too much breading than lump crab meat Can find whatever you desire here

We had a fabulous night at the Black Whale! Our group of 5 included Grandmom, parents, and a 2 year old. The staff were very accomodating and gave our 2 year old some stickers for "assisting" the doorman. She was thrilled. The salad and house dressings were to die for, I wanted more salad!! The bacon wrapped scallops app with bourbon sauce was wonderful as were all of our entrees!! Torr was our server and he was nice and efficient, ready to help but not intrusive! Great dinner and service. Highly recommend!

Follow-up to my review from eight years ago - the food is just as fresh and cooked to perfection and the bartenders are on their game with a full court press to keep their diners happy and the cocktails and beer are poured with love. I could go on about the fresh clams, oysters and other seafood but you've got to try it for yourself. Been coming here to LBI for years and it's never been less than a five star experience for me. Do yourself a favor and get in here.

THANK YOU BLACK WHALE!! For helping my now fiance host an amazing suprise engagement party last weekend. We had an absolutely amazing afternoon. The upstairs event space was perfect and everyone raved about the mussels afterwards. Looking forward to being back again this summer!
Amazing.
The food was all amazing. We had reservations based on a friend's recommendation. OMG. It was great. I had items off a seasonal menu. My favorite was the jambalaya. It was awesome. Fresh. Tasty. Could be the best I have had. Loved this place so much that we got reservations the next day (we were lucky when we called since this place is always busy - we know why now). This place is now one of my favorites.
Went here for the first time for my birthday dinner tonight.
Our waitress Adriana was not personable or attentive. When you see drink glasses that are empty, why wouldn't you ask if you need another drink instead of us asking every time. The atmosphere was so loud and we were not even near the bar. The food was ok nothing great tasted bland and the bread pudding dessert was mushy. We will not return, wasn't worth the hype.
Loved it
I never write a review However, this place is perfect! The food ,service, atmosphere Excellent!! We came in search of a good fish restaurant We found the best!

Been to the Black Whale many times but after tonight I've come to the conclusion that it's not for me. I do like the food but the atmosphere is just too loud and bustling. Very low ceilings and close tables don't help. The salad is standard but the 'secret' of mixing the two dressings make it super tasty. Calamari app was also standard but fresh and nicely fried. I really enjoyed my clams with chorizo and linguine. Although I wish the bread that came with it had been toasted as it was stale. Would have enjoyed my dunking more! The service was friendly and efficient but felt slightly rushed. The longtime hostess surely knows how to run the show (no easy task!) but can be just a bit abrupt. Perhaps understandably. If you plan to go, two things. Have a reservation or you will absolutely positively have a long wait. And if you are going with kids, save money by getting them a beer. Joking of course but my daughter's chocolate milk (with hardly any chocolate) was $6 and my Yuengling draft (cold and fresh) was $5. Go figure. Lastly, I'm old school but don't like signing the bill via a handheld device. Sever was nice and I'm sure if we asked it could have been printed. But happened so quickly/felt awkward so we just rolled with it.
Food is great! I really like the food here.
The service is good too. Ambiance is good it depends where you are sitting in the room.
Love this place.
Great atmosphere and delicious food. Taylor Swift came here this summer so it has to be good.
I ordered a steamed lobster, which at market price is not
I ordered a steamed lobster, which at market price is not cheap, and it was so tough and chewy that it was practically inedible. My baked potato was hard as a rock and they gave me 1 pat of butter and 1 tiny cup of sour cream which wasn't even enough to moisten 2 bites of it. My hubby got a grouper dish and it was also very dry and was clearly totally overcooked. I'm not quite sure why the place was so full of people with such awful food being served but it's probably the fact that there were a ton of bar patrons who were only drinking alcohol but not eating. At $120+ for two meals we could barely choke down we definitely won't be back.

Great place to eat with the fam and a great bar to socialize if you're alone. Pre-meal salad is fantastic. House jambalaya is a favorite of mine for entrees.
Food good - service stunk!
Food was very good - service and environment - not so much. Walked in on a Friday in October and there were 4 people at the bar, sat down. Bar stool was VERY sticky - tried another stool - still sticky - gave up. Bar itself was sticky too - not a good start. Bar maid was talking to a couple while we waited for service. After a few minutes (they were discussing a shirt the wife to buy husband but he didn't like it) she came over, big smile, offered drinks, I asked for a sample of the local IPA - very good so ordered and my daughter got a Blue Moon - $8 each which I thought was pricey. She gave us menus and then she went back to the couple. We decided what we wanted - she had her back to us - talking to couple. I went to the bathroom - came back. She's still chatting w/ couple. My daughter went to the bathroom - still looking at her back - at that point I would have walked out but...she came over and we ordered. Food came up in window - guess what? She was still chatting w/couple - now about her upcoming trip to Lake Placid. Finally, she noticed the food and brought it over. It was very good but would have been better hot instead of warm. I tipped 15% - there were ONLY 4 PEOPLE in the place!
Always a great place and fantastic chef!
We have gone to the Black Whale for years - especially for my birthday. This is a special place for me on LBI. The swordfish MILANESE and the Seared Grouper were cooked to perfection. The Chocolate Brownie was a great finish. The Clams Casino is delicious - ok you get it - the chef and staff are first rate. Over/under cooked swordfish is a killer - they got it right.! One thing - I loved how the wait staff would write their name with a crayon on the table, often writing their name upside down, and leave a crayon for the wannable graffiti artists - but not this year. Our very good waitress said she was just lazy - but i didn't see others do this. A small touch - bring this back!!! It was also loud upfront in the bar, the guitar player seriously didnt need an amp... but then again, I am older and more sensitive to sound. party on!

Amazing dinner at the Black Whale on 9/18/23.
Our server, Ryan was spectacular, pleasant, quick and most accommodating. The food was delicious. We started with the broccoli appetizer which was very creative and tasty. Also had the crab dip. I had the shrimp and scallop Santa Cruz, absolutely delicious, my wife had the lobster bake, outstanding and so much food and lastly my daughter had the lobster thermador, Aldo delicious. I highly recommend The Black Whale and will visit again before I depart LBI on Sunday, 9/24/23.
Dark and Dirty
Dark, dirty, gloomy. Sat next to the lobster tank which was disgusting. Slim all over the glass and lobsters appeared dead. Worst part...the server stands in front of you to pay your bill with an electronic devise and the tip is immediately 20%. If you want to leave less, it is uncomfortable to have to change it while they are standing in front of you looking at you when you sign.

Somehow I made a reservation for the Black Whale in MA, and didn't realize until I checked in at LBI Black Whale. It was insanely busy, and thankfully the hostess, still worked us in. Food was amazing. Thank you so much - she could have easily sent us away since our reservation was for the wrong location, but did not.
What a gem! Food was SO delicious.
We had the grilled mahi (bbq and pineapple salsa) and seared halibut with curry (a bit of heat) both with coconut rice. Delicious! Fun ambiance and engaging bartender (we ate at the bar). Great service and attention to detail. Eat here when on LBI!
my friend and I ate here tonight and it was amazing.
The cocktails, the oysters. we had the Tuna and Lump Crab Cakes. just outstanding. A must try on LBI.
Consistently great food!
We've been to the Blake Whale many times and always have had a great meal. The fried oysters, the jambalya and the stuffed clam appetizer wirh the crab meat are some of our favorites. The salad dressings are delicious also. In fact, I purchased their dressing several times. It is always crowded and during the summer you have to make weekend reservations 2 weeks in advance!
Best seafood
This is the place to go if you love seafood. Also, we like baked potato with our meal, and most of the seafood restaurants down here do not offer that. They want to give you pasta.
let down
my husband and i went to the black whale for an early dinner last friday and we wanted so badly to enjoy it. it was st. patrick's day but around 4 p.m. and the bar was full, with three bartenders working. it wasn't crazy. at all. just a bunch of people and ther drinks. i believe we were one of the only - if not the only - table. it took nearly 15 minutes for someone to greet us and bring drinks. the iced tea was so overbrewed it was black and bitter. another 10 minutes till someone came back to take our order. my husband's food came out before mine - thankfully it was good, he said - and he was halfway done before my crab cake came out, and it was cold. we never got refills and we had to flag down someone twice just to get the bill. so so disappointed in the food and the service.
Will not go back
Shrimp bisque to salty . Ranch dressing bland Had soft shell cabs 42 $ !! 2 pc To salty had to remove the breading to eat it breading way to Thick col slow exzellent baked potato old and not hot Raw clams excellent cocktail sauce average Breaded flounder tasteless and over cooked Broccoli was all most raw
Fresh, delicious seafood!
Our waitress Jess was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu- which is super helpful for me due to food allergy. Oysters were fresh and tasty. I had crab cakes -very good, my husband ate a grouper special that was creative and delicious. We ordered the pecan blondie with caramel ice cream, amazing. The drinks were fantastic! Getting a cosmo at a bar/resteraunt can be very good or really disappointing. These were among the best I've ever had!! Hubbie had a dirty martini with stuffed olives...made to perfection. To go with dessert we had expresso martinis- wow so good, complete with sugar rimmed glass and expresso beans!! A great dinner dining experience.
