Blue Hill Restaurant New York Reviews from The Last Year
Only problem is: how can we eat anywhere else now?
This was THE spot my adult son wanted to visit on his birthday trip to NYC with me and his sister. He had seen the Netflix documentary on Blue Hill and it totally inspired him. He planted it in his mind that he wanted to visit Dan Barber's restaurant one day. When I told him I wanted to take him to NYC for his birthday, the first thing he asked to do was to visit here. He raved about the restaurant all the way to NYC. He even had us watch the documentary so we could understand why he was so excited about it. Before we came, we all had super high expectations. I was kind of worried that our expectations were too high. As the first dish was served and we bit into the raw veggies, we didn't know exactly what we were to expect - after all, how different could a radish be? But we thoroughly enjoyed each bite. When it came to the turnip, we hesitated - raw turnip? After we took a bite, we looked at each other and almost at the same time said: "That's a turnip?!" It was incredible - sweet - juicy - perfect. We ate everything - greens and all - it's that good and that fresh. With each dish that was served, we found ourselves transported to a time and place where food was alive - where simple foods tasted incredible all on their own, and where food could be enjoyed without punishing you later. When we made our reservations, I indicated that my daughter and I were gluten-free and dairy-free. We always avoid those because we don't do well with the glyphosate found in most wheat products (from Round-up being used on the crops) and the hormones and antibiotics pumped into dairy cows that make their way into the milk. After we watched the documentary, we decided to drop the restrictions. My daughter was almost in tears as she bit into bread and butter that was so incredibly delicious that she was wishing she could find a way to have it every day. We all enjoyed the dairy, bread, and every part of each course. And, hours later, we didn't have to "pay the price". The price had been paid ahead of time by sourcing ingredients that both taste delicious and deliver proper nutrition to the body without any harmful additions. We couldn't have been happier. We enjoyed our meal so much that we decided to change our plans and go back for the Sunday lunch 2 days later. That was an equally wonderful experience. And, what meal out is complete without incredible serving staff! The staff here are wonderful and went out of their way to welcome us and help us celebrate my son's birthday in the perfect way. Thank you to everyone at Blue Hill Restaurant. And thank you to Dan Barber for your commitment to a vision. We see it with you. Our only regret is not being able to meet the chefs who created such fantastic food. Your talents were greatly enjoyed by us three.
Really tasty meal with top notch ingredients.
We ate at the bar and had the tasting menu. Service was spectacular, with the bartender/waitress explaining each course and paired wine with exceptional detail. I'm a big carnivore, but the focus here was on the produce. It was kind of a new experience - most non-vegetarian meals treat the protein as the star, but here it was simply a compliment to the preparation of the vegetables. Big highlight was the radicchio with raspberry vinegarette and pistachios. Worth both the Michelin star and the price tag.

A really lovely meal overall, with some real standouts! My favorite was the tuna sashimi which had just enough flavor from other elements to complement but not overwhelm. The asparagus was so tender -- just in season, apparently! There was also a lovely vegetable in the main steak dish that I missed the name of. I did feel like some of the dishes were either too salty or sour for perfect balance, and there was a potato dish that was simply undercooked. The dessert was also far too sweet for my taste, and the accompanying blueberries very mid. I wish they had a proper menu with descriptions of the food, as it was difficult to remember all the elements of the food when they were served as multiple dishes at once. If you're fragrance sensitive, note that both bathrooms have quite strong candles going.
The idea of this restaurant--serving a full meal made of
The idea of this restaurant--serving a full meal made of seasonal food--was an interesting one, and the service was warm and welcoming. The problems is the food and behind it the chef. My first two courses were seriously over salted and almost inedible. When I mildly pointed this out, I was told that the salt on the food had not dissolved properly. The next course had no salt but was over-peppered. The first three courses were wasted on me; I could not taste the food for the salt and then the pepper. The next course, the main dish consisted of a piece of fish; I took one bite and pushed it away. It had no salt, no pepper and no seasoning of any kind; it was utterly tasteless. Seems to me that committing to a full meal carries the risk that the food will have no savor. That's the case, I think, with this restaurant. I left hungry and won't be back.
Our recent dining experience at Family Meal at Blue Hill
Our recent dining experience at Family Meal at Blue Hill exceeded all expectations, thanks to the exceptional service provided by Savannah. Despite a minor hiccup with the menu offerings for our children, Savannah's unwavering dedication ensured that our evening was nothing short of extraordinary. She orchestrated off-menu creations that surpassed our wildest expectations. Savannah's calm demeanor and genuine care transformed what could have been a disappointing experience into a truly memorable one. We are eternally grateful for her exemplary service and the culinary delights crafted by your talented kitchen team. Family Meal at Blue Hill has undoubtedly earned a place in our hearts, thanks in large part to Savannah's exceptional hospitality.
This place is amazing and I was totally blown away.
Was here for a special family event and we couldn't have found a better way to close things out for that weekend. The service was incredible and we were amazed by our entire meal. I went in slightly worried given how much hype, yet I was able to get a reservation. Seemed weird as it's typically hard to with a restaurant like this. My worries were unwarranted and I very very highly recommend this place.

*apologies in advance for the poor quality photos - the lighting wasn't conducive to capturing how brilliant and beautiful these dishes were. I was a bit hesitant going in as there were a few mixed reviews, and of course paying $145 pp, you want to be blown away. I had recently watched the Chef's Table episode on Dan Barber and was intrigued on the vegetable focus, farm to table tasting menu at Family Meal. Also, with the daily menu change you simply do not know what you'll be served. 2 hours later - I was blown away and amazed with the entire meal. The veggies served were unlike any veggies I have tasted before. The entire meal from start to finish was enjoyable. In addition, I was surprised how much fish and meat was served (for those worried about the lack of protein). Highly highly recommend this place. Well deserved Michelin Star, and of course the service matches that distinction. Honestly surprised this place isn't as hyped as it is.
i really enjoyed my experience at Family Meal at Blue Hill.
i don't love family meals, but the ambiance was very nice and most of the dishes were totally delicious. we especially enjoyed the raw fish starters. the main beef dish and squash cheesecake dessert were not standouts. cocktails were pretty good. all in all, it was a solid meal and i'd definitely return!

I usually anticipate being a little hungry after fine dining but that was not the case with Family Meal. Our group thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. The portions were generous for fine dining and being able to share dishes family style was a great experience since you don't usually get to do that at fine dining establishments. The service was impeccable. The meal was a great value and experience. I look forward for coming back to try the new menu!

Perfect meal from top to bottom, and the service was top-notch. We went for my partner's birthday and they made a gluten-free birthday cake. Very attentive and accomodating to food restrictions. The ambiance was as sweet as ever. Just a New York gem.
What a great experience shared among friends! I'm a huge
What a great experience shared among friends! I'm a huge proponent of family style dining and it's made even easier when the menu is set for you! The menu changes based on the fresh ingredients that are available for around 145/person not including tip and tax. We brought 2 bottles of alcohol. There's a 50 dollars per bottle corkage fee and their only rule is the bottle cannot be available at the restaurant. They were very kind to us when one of us broke this rule. We started off with a beautiful plate of cauliflower tempura, peas and peppers with a delicious concoction of sweetness in the peppers. This was followed by yellowfish and fluke crudo. The fluke came with a delicious mole like sauce. Then we were surprised by a fish stew, warm bread with cheese and rye butter as well as some squash. We finished it off with potatoes, beef and lettuce. The dessert was a squash cheesecake that was just ok. Overall, I felt like this was a great experience for a nice communal meal set in a very laid back comfortable dining environment. Was the food the most amazing I've ever had? No. But the quality, the thoughtfulness, the ease of everything made it a 5/5 experience.
Amazing Artisan Farm to Table Dining in NYC
Family Meal at Blue Hill in New York City was one of the most amazing restaurants I have ever visited. Everything was farm to table except a special flour from Spain used in the bread. Course after course came out and each one was delightful. Each one used seasonal vegetables and fruits. One course actually had fish prepared two different ways. The service was exceptional. There was a full bar, great wine list and specialty cocktails. There is no menu, you eat what is fresh for the day. My two year old granddaughter was with us, and they offered to warm some milk for her! There was so much food, but no take out bags were needed. We ate every bite. Truly, the chef is an artisan and I will eat here again when visiting New York City.
Food is always incredible and brings me back 10 years after
Food is always incredible and brings me back 10 years after moving away from NYC. However, without the service it would just be another great restaurant in a city with loads. The service makes it the place that my wife and I will always return to. It's been 15 years since we started coming to Blue Hill. Let's shoot for another 15.

You remember those movies where they show the quintessential cozy restaurant, tucked away in the middle of the village in Manhattan; it's fall and slightly chilly, everyone's bundled outside but people are having a lovely dinner in a warmly lit restaurant? That's Family Meal - the perfect farm to table restaurant here in the city, nothing pompous, but elevated yet and relaxed. The food and concept are all based on the famous Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester. Family Meal provides a lovely seasonal tasting menu that changes regularly. Very accommodating to dietary restrictions like vegetarians. The food speaks for itself and is simply delicious. Service, inviting and friendly yet very knowledgeable. Ambiance and setting, well, I think I painted a nice picture in the beginning. It's a must try!
Exceptional ingredients flawlessly executed.

Gourmet food - worth it!
Great little restaurant with exceptional food! We had the wine pairing, unfortunately the timing was a bit too fast, so it wasn't really a cozy evening, after 1.5 hours we were out again. We are used to a bit more in a restaurant like this. But we can still recommend trying it out. The service was otherwise very nice and helpful
Amazing food
Huge fan of Family Meal at Blue Hill. I was afraid to be disappointed because I was blown away by the Tarrytown location, but the Blue Hill in the city was amazing as well. I love the family meal, menu-less concept, and I was pleasantly surprised. Several shared plates per each of the 4 courses were presented using the freshest of ingredients. There wasn't a single dish I didn't like. I particularly enjoyed the day's bread course and chicken main plate. Service is was on point as well.
Great and interesting food, bad wine pairing
So admittedly, it is impossible to select wines as you are unclear what y you are eating. But you are offered a wine pairing. Random plates were brought out. The food was mostly great. But the wine pairings were not great and were a very poor value. $95 for 5 half glasses of wine is a lot for young, bad wines. The wine pairings really hindered the evening.
