Birthday dinners for two.
No parking lot only open street parking. Difficult to find parking near by. I had reservation and was seated on time. The interior was not as elegant as I expected. I didn't see any tables, we were seated at a booth for two. No table cloths. Promptly waited on and received excellent service. The ambiance and dinner music left much to be desired, did not live up to the restaurant reputation. We ordered the 4 Steak sampler for two with mushrooms. The steaks were, prime ribeye, 35 day dry aged ribeye, American wagyu ribeye and Japanese wagyu ribeye. Wow! Wow! This was a wonderful experience to taste the difference between the 4 steaks. The quality and quantity was over the top wonderful. Each steak had its own taste and texture but the Japanese wagyu was unbelievable . The Japanese wagyu burst in your mouth with flavors and taste like nothing I have ever had. Plenty of steak for two. A meal to remember. Very expensive but well worth the cost for the experience.

In the middle of Little Italy a boujee great Steakhouse. Bar was awesome. Rooftop bar & tables. Unique experience at time of desert too.
Be the first to ReplyGreat scene and good food
Gorgeous ambience. Not the best steak I have ever had but a very solid steak. The service was excellent. Try the rooftop deck.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food, Okay Ambience
Had very high expectations for my birthday dinner here and some were met while others not so much. I expected delicious food at a hefty price and the bread, Caesar salad made table side, steak sampler, potato and mushroom sides and carrot scale all met expectations. Asked for a nice table and we were sat downstairs in what I can only describe as an awkward shared booth with two table that had a foot gap. The whole bottom floor was arranged that way and it was not very cozy or appealing. I also note it was very noisy and cold. If you do eat here, I highly suggest the upstairs balcony. Overall a good night with great food but not quite to expectations.

Iโve been to this restaurant several times. Good steak, very expensive and nice ambiance. Last night went up to the second floor bar for drinks and the restaurant was half empty. They did not serve us because the second floor is reservations only. There is no need for this sort of ridiculous behavior when your restaurant is empty!

Amazing atmosphere, service was excellent and food was superb. Recommend a 400g steak of any cut you prefer and truffle ketchup chips. I say this as the portion of chips is quite generous. I ordered a massive steak and was not disappointed. They were able to prepare the steak medium rare throughout the steak. If youโre in San Diego and donโt mind spending a bit more than usual for a good experience I would highly recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyGreat steak and desserts
Really enjoyed our dinner here. Like everywhere in San Diego, itโs a very relaxed place (it looks great but you can go there wearing totally casual clothes - we felt overdressed!). The steak was good if a touched over cooked. Dessert (the 7 layer carrot cake) was wonderful.
Be the first to ReplyAn Amazing Experience
Came here for our Anniversary dinner, and had a perfect experience. Make a reservation a day or two in advance. It's in the Little Italy area, so the whole area was buzzing. The ambiance and decor was inviting and cozy. The bar is one of the most vast that I've seen, and the upstairs open air dining area was nice as well. We started off with drinks, that were good and strong. For food, we had the 35oz. Porterhouse steak, which was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. To accompany we added the mac & cheese, the broccolini, and the garlic bread. Everything was so good. To finish it off, we got the 7-layer carrot cake. It was probably the best I've ever had. It was so tall, we couldn't even get through half of it. Jason was our server, and he gave us top-tier service. I'd come back for the ambiance alone, but the food and drinks were wonderful. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny, but you'll go home happy(and with leftovers)!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Steak and Service
There ate plenty of choices for steak in downtown San Diego but Born and Raised is among the very best. I enjoyed an excellent meal. The Wagyu steak was amazing. I loved the carrot soup. Maybe a tad too much salt in the potato purรฉe but still good. However, service was the highlight of the meal. Maria is a fantastic server. She knows the menu, made great recommendations, and was warm, cheerful, and helpful. Maria is a super star! Plus, the doggie bag is amazing.

Very busy place on a Friday night. Lots of people in for dinner and drinks. Quite dressed up for an American restaurant as well, which was nice. Food was good. We both had fillet steaks. Husband's was a bit on the underdone side. He asked for it medium and some of the steak was the same consistency as my medium-rare steak, so he couldn't eat some of it. We had sides of broccolini and mac and cheese which were also good. Drinks were a bit slow and I had to ask twice for water refills, which on the levels of tips expected, isn't what I would expect. There is a dessert trolley with 3 different types of cake. We shared an apple pie cheesecake which was lovely and definitely for 2 people. The terrace upstairs looked nice for drinks as well. Definitely worth a try
Be the first to ReplyWORST Experience EVER!
Worst experience EVER!!! So many things went wrong during our dinner that we actually looked around for a camera & Ashton Kutcher to come out saying we were being PUNKโD. We thought the episode was testing how gracious we could be with problem after problem. The server (Megan) said โSorryโ so many times that it meant nothing after a while. We finally asked for the Manager and Bridgette came over. She said the staff was rolling out a new menu and everyone was just learning it. She would take care of things for us. Not sure what that meant but she should have comped the whole dinner. We used to be repeat customers but after this experience, we wonโt be back. Server was busy & did not greet our table for a long time. She could not describe the fish special and had to go back to the kitchen to get a better description for us. Cocktails took 15min and then one was wrong & had to be re-made. Sommelier took our wine to decant it and we had to ask Megan where it was after all the food was delivered and we had no wine with our dinner. Megan ended up bringing out the wine half way through our meal. Never saw the sommelier that took our wine. We had to flag down someone to get another cocktail because no-one was checking on us. Two entrees (filets) were delivered to the table at least 12-15 min before the other two entrees (Halibut special). We had to flag someone down and ask for our side dishes that we ordered (broccolini & potatoes) that were never delivered and then the sauces they provided for the filets were not even warm. The Filet for one person turned out to be cold so they took it back. When they brought back the 2nd one it was so rare that it was not edible. This was a Birthday dinner and it was anything but pleasant! We would have gladly paid the high prices for good service & food but we did not get that at all. After dinner, Megan brings out forks and was ready to give us โfreeโ dessert. How insulting! After everything, the last thing we wanted was a free dessert. We were so done and wanted to leave. We got the bill and I gave a credit card. Bridgette gave approx. $75 off our bill that was initially over $525 for 4 people. The bill charged us for 3 filets instead of 2 ($57 each) which I did not notice until we got home so the discount turned out to be only $18. After I was ready to sign the charge slip, Meghan came back over and apologized again that she had rung up the wrong amount. She had rung up my credit card for another table. Are you kidding me?!? This was just the final straw. I seriously could not believe she had the audacity to ask for my CC back. The meal should have been comped. It was a Monday night. I shudder to think how bad it would have been on a weekend!

This place is a very special experience from the vibe to the food. We waited at the bar a bit for our table. A Shangri-La of spirits on display. The interior of the restaurant is a trip back into a glamorous time. Our server, Art, was spot on , friendly and attentive. My pork dish goes down as one of the 5 best Iโve ever had!!! All in all, a fabulous experience.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible Management Experience!!!
My daughter and son-in-law had at Born and Raised on Thursday. They are in San Diego on their honeymoon. They were concerned right from the beginning and were not getting a good vibe about their server but they made no issue of it. Their meal started out good with the tableside salad and then that is where everything else went wrong. They waited one hour for their entrees to come out. After 45 minutes they questioned the server and another 15 minutes later only after getting a manager did their entrees arrive. They ordered the steak sampler which now came out cold and one of the steaks was actually too tough for them to even eat. They once again spoke to a manager who returned the meal and brought it out again 15 minutes later and it was still not good. A third time they spoke with a manager who finally admitted blame and said there was a ticketing issue with the kitchen. At that point they asked for the check. I understand things happen even at best restaurants, but the issue here is even after admitting blame, there was nothing done to rectify the issue. He offered them a 15% discount off the entree ($22 on a $225 bill !!!). Are you kidding me! We live in NYC and have been to the best of the best and never would another restaurant of your level not do something to rectify the issue especially for 2 people on their honeymoon What was supposed to be the ending highlight of their trip turned into an extremely disappointing experience and a major lack of customer service!!! Very Very disappointed in the restaurant and your management team
Be the first to Reply9/4/22 Perfect evening
Greeted warmly and with respect and offered "champagne cart" when greeted. Champagne poured immediately upon being seated; perfect timing for sipping and relaxing while perusing menu. Atmosphere is classy, relaxing, artistic interior - natural elements, art collection compliments. A bit loud with murmurs of guests when house is full; not distracting. Treated like royalty by customer care specialist, Nikole, and impressively knowledgeable sommelier, William. Accurate descriptions of menu items and helpful, thoroughly enjoyed suggestions by Nikole. Timing with her attendance throughout the evening was perfect: not hurried, no long waiting periods, expert with fine-dining timing - obvious was her objective to provide for us a wonderful evening. Impressed with skill and elegance in preparation of "table side" menu item - best steak tartare I have had. We ordered varieties of steak, seafood and vegetables, and William suggested the perfect wine for pairing with our complex meal: we opted for a bottle in lieu of pairing by the glass. He was present throughout the evening, so were never left wanting for more. Nikole suggested perfect dessert wine to enjoy with our carrot cake - a beautifully paired Madeira, of which William described region and wine-making methods. We sent compliments to the chefs for their expertise as all items exceeded expectations with presentation and taste: steaks exactly as ordered, vegetables al dente and delicately complimented with fresh herbs, sauces were heavenly, dessert was divine. Visitor to San Diego and world traveler, only 1 other dining experience equaled that enjoyed at Born & Raised. Thank you for a perfect experience and an extraordinary evening.
Be the first to ReplyLooks great, tastes great
Visited with my wife and daughter and had a booth table in the ground floor restaurant. Rooms does evoke the Gatsby feel. Waiting staff and sommelier were excellent. The Charcuterie Board starter was an absolute gem. I ordered Steak Diane and it was flambรฉed at the table which was theatrical. Wife and daughter loved their steaks also. We had a great experience here.
Be the first to ReplyNice Steak place but not Fabulous as I heard
I stumbled upon this restaurant to look at it for a private event. Decided it really wouldn't work for that purpose and decided to have dinner here as I had heard great things about it. I liked it but wasn't blown away. We sat upstairs in what the host said was his favorite table. We overlooked India Street. It was a beautiful night. Service was great, waitstaff are dressed in full, velvet jacket tuxedos, they must have been baking in the 80 degree weather, sweat was pouring down our waiter's face. I didn't love any of the cocktails on the menu so asked the waiter to have the bartender make me a vodka based fruit cocktail. So so good! Ceasar salad was beyond disappointing. $21 for about 8 leaves of romaine with a table side housemade dressing which had no flavor. We also shared the brussels sprout salad. Once we asked for more dressing, it was OK but again, really lacked flavor. The mushrooms and mashed potatoes were outstanding. My filet was good but I like a char on mine (no char) and it needed salt. There is a tableside dessert cart, pretty fancy, you don't see that much anymore, a choice of 3 cakes. We tried the chocolate cake and the carrot cake, both delicious.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, excellent service, lots of attention to detail
We really enjoyed our dinner here. The menu was diverse, the food was delicious, and I appreciated the level of attention to detail that went into each part of the meal. Definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyNice terrace for driNKS
We enjoyed the atmosphere at Born and Raised, had aperol spritz and a cheese and charcuterie plate. We will be back to have dinner on our next visit to San Diego
Be the first to ReplyNice Atmosphere for Drinks
We stopped by for cocktails. Nice atmosphere for some intimate drinks with friends. Beautiful woodwork.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible
If youโre looking for an elegant, quiet dining experience and a decent steak this is not the place. Unfortunately this was not my biggest disappointment. The chairs upstairs had almost no back so if you eat upstairs, donโt plan on leaning back. We moved downstairs and reseated in a booth. Maybe the hardest seat weโve ever sat in. Obviously comfort is not a priority here. We both ordered the bone in rib-eye and both were tough and nowhere worth the exorbitant price. The clientele was younger and the noise level was possibly more appropriate for that demographic. Our server Brian was the only highlight. Other then Brian, we cannot recommend this establishment. Sorry!
Be the first to ReplyLots of hype, spend your money elsewhere!
The horrible hostess, Caitlin, nearly ruined our long-anticipated dinner with her unapologetic, condescending, dismississive attitude. Our party of 4 arrived at 5:24pm for a 5:30 rez on a non-busy Sunday afternoon, and she REFUSED to seat us until "closer to 5:30". ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?! She directed us to have a seat in the bar area for 6 minutes, while there were several at least 5 empty tables and a half empty bar. It felt like that airport scene from "Meet the Parents" with the patronizing ticket agent. As a representative of the restaurant, she nearly cost them a client. But I'm from out of town, and we were hungry, so we sallied forth.
Despite all the theater about not seating us till our appointed reservation time, our drink order was not taken until we'd been seated for 15 mins and the drinks still didn't arrive for another 12 minutes after that. For a place that stuck it to us about being timely, they are not timely. My blood was boiling by then. Despite another hostess (Sarah) being aware of our unhappiness, we were never approached by the manager to discuss mitigation-- another tell-tale sign that they just want your money, and they don't really care about your experience.
The evening was salvaged by good food: uni spaghetti, good steaks (please, invest in a sprig of parsley on the meat slab), and a decent carrot cake. Maria was a good server.
For the hard-earned money we spent, it was a tremendous disappointment. Lots of hype, but they're prett disproportionately full of themselves. Spend your money elsewhere.
Overpriced
Fancy venue, great meat and good wineโฆ at a price! It was very overpriced, 80$ for a bottle of house red and 51$ for a steak.. just the meat.. (which was great).
But the water!! They did not have bottled water!! Just tap-water which tasted far from good. That ruined a lot. For a place that tries so hard to come across as fancyโฆ this is just ridiculous.
Nice selection of steak found here
QUICKIE REVIEW
Nice selection of steaks can be had here.
FOOD
This is what I tried:
French Onion Soup
Butter Poached Lobster
Steak Sampler with all sauces + salt
Cheesecake
I have to say the soup was quite nice. What made it even better is that it was cold outside so what better way to start a meal than with some hearty soup. Seasoning was done just right on it. Next, we tried the butter poached lobster. This was ok. Then came the main dish of steak sampler which is a great option if you want to try a variety of steak and not to commit to any one type. Recommend this for the different types of steak you can experience. Pleasant surprise was the horseradish sauce that did not have an overpowering kick to it but was smooth and creamy. This went very well with a touch of salt on the steak. Finally, that cheesecake was a slice of heaven. They are not stingy with it either, the piece I had was very giving for the portion.
PARKING
No go. Street parking is where it is at.
SERVICE
Good. Waitress kind and prompt.
PRICE
You can expect to spend a pretty penny here. Steak Sampler alone is $152.
TIP/OTHER THOUGHTS
Make sure you make a reservation. You can chance it and head upstairs to the bar area but if you want guaranteed seating, make a reservation.
POOR Service/Lack of Management Leadership
Poor Service to Start/ Manager BIG no Show!
We ordered drinks and appetizers at the same time as requested by the waiter. Appetizers arrive before the drinks, that's a major basic restaurant training 101 NO and reflects poor management. Requested to speak to the manager and he/she was a no show, maybe down the street having a beer because they couldn't get one at there bar? I guess that's why service is poor?
Service actually did improve as we progressed thru dinner. But poor service in the beginning is always a major issue and reflects poor management.
Had porterhouse house steak, was awesome and actual took away some of bad taste due to the prior poor service. All of the other meals had the same rating!
The dรฉcor of the restaurant is very interesting, they have a MAJOR miss that the bathrooms are on the second floor and the evaluator requires finding staff to operate it.
Bottom line, management needs to go back to restaurant 101 training and learn to help the bar deliver bar tickets to the tables! And actually show up at a table that requests them.
PCUSA Rating: B+
Tale of broken chair
We had to eat at the bar for dinner since we did not have reservations. That was ok with us though. Food was delicious and our server was fantastic. Here is the issue. I stepped outside to take a call and when I returned and sat in the barstool it snapped and I nearly fell to the ground. Our server was immediately there to offer her apology and have the chair removed. Not once did the manager come over to ask if I was OK. Our server did comp a couple items, which I never asked for to be comped. I thought as high end of restaurant it is the manager should have taken some interest in my well being. Maybe our server should be manager and the manager be dismissed
