Brat Tucked away in a former strip club is this cozy, dimly lit restaurant cooking plates inspired by the beautiful Basque Country. Fire is central to everything they do and that's evident from the smell of smoke that penetrates the bar as soon as you walk through the door. Chef Tomos Parry, who made a name for himself at fashionable Kitty Fischer's in Mayfair, focuses on simple dishes executed perfectly. Whole grilled seafood ('brat' is an old English word for turbot) sits alongside their delicious housemade breads topped with olive oil and sardines. The cherry on top of this whole experience was their basque cheesecake with rhubarb. To say we could have eaten three or four slices would be an understatement.

RECOMMEND! Brat is a delightful small restaurant with a cozy vibe and delicious food. Service is top shelf -- including the reservation process -- who accommodated a 1 hour push back of our start time because of a long running theater show and traffic. Its dining area and kitchen are one space so many are treated to a view of the wood fired stove and chefs at work. Many interesting menu options from the starters to mains right through to dessert. Enjoy!
Be the first to ReplyVisited BRAT in London lured by its Michelin Star.
Ambiance was nice with an open kitchen and grill. Tables were placed close together but managed to create a cozy and not claustrophobic vibe. Service was very good. The food, unfortunately, was generally disappointing. We ordered the roasted clams, chorizo and puffed bread to start. All were tasty but the portions were very small especially for the price point. For example, the chorizo was effectively 4 small bites. Most disappointing was our main - a whole grilled turbot - the restaurant's signature dish which we ordered for the three of us to share. What was presented to us was a soggy fish swimming in an unpleasant gelatinous liquid with little flavor except for smoke from the fire. It was so completely off putting we barely touched it. We had really looked forward to this meal and left shocked by the experience and confused the restaurant had obtained a Michelin star.

Food very good; service OK. Returned 4 years later and was quite disappointed. Booked for 1 person and when I arrived they tried to put me at an uncomfortable counter seat. Asked for a table and it worked out. Starter of chorizo was tasty. When I ordered a glass of 19gbp wine with my main, the wine list said "coravin" which I assumed was a coravin system. Instead I saw the server pour from an open bottle. When she brought the wine, I asked her about the coravin, but she seemed flustered. Plus the pour was quite meagre; I then asked the sommelier and he said "oh your server made a mistake". I asked about the meagre pour and he said "135 milliliters is what we pour for a glass". OK whatever. My flustered server disappeared and as time stretched on, I wondered where my main of Turbot pil-pil with potatoes was. After 25 minutes, another server dumped the plate on my table, not even saying anything. The food was lukewarm and although tasty, it lacked salt. I ate about half of my main and as it had gotten cold, it became unappetizing. When the server came to take away the plates, she asked how the food was. I said it was tasty, but it was served almost cold. A few minutes later, the manager was looming over me, asking "were there problems with the food ?" I replied yes food was served lukewarm, so it got cold on the plate. He replied "you have been rude to my staff so I am asking you to leave." I replied that I was by no means rude, but I had questions about the coravin and when asked I told a server my food was cold. Moral of the story: BRAT is now a tourist joint where a customer dare not complain. Chef Parry makes nice food, but his staff is entitled, lazy and do not understand the concept of hospitality. I will be pleased to never return to BRAT.
Be the first to Replybrat has a real WOW factor and is most definitely where you
brat has a real WOW factor and is most definitely where you will find the young, hip crowd. It is a place to be seen, and the communal dining environment lends itself to that. Our table for two was a row of 4 or 5 double tables, which is great for eyeing what others have ordered but not so great for quiet conversation. The restaurant itself is located off the beaten path and really beautiful on the inside, in that hip, cool kind of way. Like the wonderful people who grace the UK, service was warm and gracious. The menu is interesting and there really does seem to be something for everyone. We shared - - Grilled bread and anchovy. Comes to the table as a beautiful, bulbous piece of bread that quickly deflates once you cut into it. There were 4 or so strips of anchovies on top, but I really would have loved some in the filling. - Spider Crab and tomato. My niece found this to be one of her favorite dishes at brat. Personally, I found the crab to be quite fishy but admittedly, it is not my favorite crustacean. If you love crab, order it. If not, perhaps a pass. - Fresh chorizo. You look at the photo I posted and you may say, heck, there's a lot of fat in that chorizo. Well, yes. It's fatty, incredibly tasty and wonderfully delicious. We loved it. - Langoustine. While we expected a small portion (it only costs 8 pounds!), there was so little meat it was a very disappointing dish. Particularly because the meat you did get was such a sweet treat. - Menai Oysters with tomato & seaweed. We ordered 4, I ate 1. My niece and I love oysters and I typically devour them. These were not our favorites. With that said, full transparency, I was not a fan of the oysters I ate in the UK. All good in that there were plenty of things I really did enjoy! - Lamb chops. We ordered two and they were absolutely perfectly cooked and delicious. If I were to go back to brat at some point I would likely order 2 of these chops for myself. - John Dory. I've heard of John Dory/St. Peter's fish for years, but never had the opportunity to order it. When I saw it on the menu I knew it was a must-have. Sorry for no photo, but it's not the prettiest fish ;) The fish is served whole and the easiest way to get to the meat is to lift the bone out (I didn't figure that out early enough in the process). The fish itself was utterly delicious and I now know that I love John Dory. With that said, even being a whole fish, just didn't seem like a heck of a lot of meat. I believe over the course of dinner we had a total of 4 glasses of wine. The total cost of our bill (tips are included) was $240.86, which I actually found quite reasonable. brat has oodles of positive reviews, so take mine for what it is worth. The food actually shines in its simplicity which is something I personally love as I'm not a big fan of hiding under too much sauce/gravy. For me, dishes were hit or miss. You may love it as many of its fans do.
Be the first to ReplyBrat is a Michelin-starred basque restaurant in Shoreditch.
Although space is a bit cramped, the food, wine list and service are great. Order a number of smaller plates to share so you get a full sense of the range of food and tastes of the Basque region.
Be the first to ReplyA near religious experience.
One of my favorite restaurants I've tried in London after being so hyped up by the press. The restaurant itself is an open-kitchen concept with a focus on wood-fired cooking. Each dish was executed with such attention to detail but the basque cheesecake was truly what set the experience apart. And pricing was so fair for what it's worth.
Be the first to ReplyThe service was incredibly slow.
No one came to check up on our table for most of the dinner. We did not have one dedicated server and instead had to call to numerous people. Flagging our waiter down in this particular restaurant is especially chaotic given how loud it is and how close you are to other people. The restaurant has a very crowded feel, which would be fine if we felt we were regularly being checked in on. The food was not properly salted at all. The most egregious dish is the duck rice. Most of the rice we received was overcooked and firmly stuck to the pan. The duck and rice tasted bland.

Too many flaws - a good restaurant fairly reasonably priced - lamb and beef dishes seem to be what they do best - Fantastic lamb and sweet bread dish and a great tartare - all else so so - noisy and cramped - servers try hard but it's tough layout
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was delicious.
Almost everything we ordered was extremely tasty, and I thought the food was both well prepared and well plated. I am not super happy. We were seated almost a full hour after our reservation, which meant we ended up, leaving the restaurant over two hours beyond when we were supposed to be seated. With a little one in tow, this meant bedtime was pushed back and he was cranky. The servers also weren't very accessible, and some of them were downright rude. When we asked to order more food, they gave us a condescending "you've had quite enough" vibe. We finished all of our food for the record! I think this would be a great date spot, or place for young couples. Not very family friendly.
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, would just return for the cheesecake.
The grilled bread with green garlic was good but very oily on top. Well baked and tasty, feel like it would be better on the side of something. The lamb was not great. So fatty that it was not appealing, and not much flavor to it.The cheesecake though... maybe the best cheesecake I've ever had. Soft and rich, almost like a custard on the very middle, but fluffy on the outer parts. Truly phenomenal. But I don't get the rhubarb on the side. It adds nothing, and is not particularly flavorful on its own either.
Be the first to ReplyThe small plates here really stood out.
House made chorizo could have been my favorite. Grilled bread w chanterelles was awesome. They really do bread well here. Leeks + cheese good. Tartare good. Shared a big fish that was fun to pick at and I know its one of the specialties but I think I liked the small dishes more. A group of 4-6 here vs a party of 2 would be ideal. Can try so many more items. Need reservation.
Be the first to ReplyIn my research on where I was going to go during my trip to
In my research on where I was going to go during my trip to London, I stumbled upon Brat. A one Michelin Starred joint that exclusively cooks with fire. No electricity. Just fire. From my table, I could see a massive, wood-burning oven and a giant firepit with grates at three different height levels, presumably for different heat intensities. I've heard of places like this, and I was excited to try one out for myself. We started off with the Grilled Bread (with Girolles & Berkswell). We saw them throw it in the oven, bake right in front of our eyes, and then get adorned with some cheese and the mushrooms. A slight char, flavorful, salty cheese, and the umami from the mushrooms made this a true banger. We ordered a small plate next, the Lamb Chop with Grilled Sweetbreads. The lamb chop had that same, good char. Tender and simply seasoned. Served with a couple of sweetbreads, which, if you've never had, you should. They are officially a new texture for me, a slight creaminess. Very unique. Very delicious. Then we ordered a main, the Lemon Sole. A whole fish, face and all, trapped in a cage and roasted over the fire. Charred, barely seasoned, the meat singing its own praises. There aren't a lot of experiences as visceral as eating a whole fish. Amazing. FYI, though, this fish had both more and smaller pin bones that you average fish, so you're gonna work for your prize. Then we got another main, the Roast Duck Rice. This dish was unbelievable. The rice was cooked in the duck fat, the duck was ultra crispy, and the whole mushrooms and slices of onion just made this campfire-like dish so unctuous. Very heavy, with no relief, in a good way. With all our food, we got a couple of sides, the Smoked Potatoes and the Wood Roasted Greens. Both great. Buttery potatoes served whole, so you get that pop of the skin with every bite. The stuff of dreams. And the green were nice. Not like, mega delicious, but you need that freshness to break up the heaviness of the whole meal. It was covered in that same cheese that was on the bread. A good side. Then it was time for dessert, the Burnt Cheesecake & Nectarine. The cheesecake was pure velvet. Amazing. It was covered with a fine layer of ash on top, which sounds not good, but it was very good. I think the one I had was served with a pear, as opposed to the new menu version, but either way, a slice of fruit complements this well, because the flavor is very neutral. Overall, great. Overall, I loved this place. Everything they served looked so dang rustic, like it was served to me at a campsite, right out of the fire. But at the same time, it was delicate, and worthy of Michelin's attention. I also liked the way they highlighted various ingredients. The same mushrooms and cheeses kept showing up in their different dishes in different ways, and they played a good part. Yes, come here. It's a winner.
Be the first to ReplyReally disappointing.
The scallop and the leek with fresh cheese were great, but we also ordered live lobster, the beef rib, and also asked the somm for a bottle of wine and they were all very disappointing. The lobster (76 pounds!) was small and was not fresh. We often eat lobster and eating it in Chinatown or Dishoom is way more fresh and cheaper. We asked for the rib to be cooked medium and parts of the massive rib (over 90 pounds!) were way over that it was chewy and dry. The flavor of the steak was good but cooked poorly, and it was soaking in this weird sauce that was unnecessary. We also ordered the mushroom dish which was not delicious. The bottle of wine suggested by the somm (65 pounds) was not memorable or delicious. Just any table wine but costs more. Very disappointed. We can New Year's Eve. Didn't care that we had to wait for the food but was not good for the price.
Be the first to ReplyWe especially enjoyed the small plates and wanted to love
We especially enjoyed the small plates and wanted to love the turbot, having seen it featured on a television program. The turbot was good, but a tad dry and not as moist and buttery as it looked on television. The stars were the baked breads with anchovies or the chanterelle bread, crab salad toast, red prawns and the pork shoulder. Nice selection of crafted cocktails and ample wine selections rounded out the nice meal. Not to be forgotten was the awesome chocolate cacao sorbet! For dessert we had the tasty burnt cheesecake and chocolate sorbet. We have not stopped raving about the sorbet. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in navigating the menu. A nice touch was when the host offered to hang our coats upon entry!
Be the first to ReplyMichelin-starred and with the top 100 best in the world
Michelin-starred and with the top 100 best in the world fame: Brat - restaurant named after the old English colloquialism for the flat fish - turbot. Hence grilled seafood (including whole turbot) is the focus and we see bigger parties sharing the grilled larger format dishes, including lamb from the Wales, beef from the English southwest. We are a party of 2 so we ordered the smaller tapa style dishes. Started off with some local oysters with some seaweed that tasted refreshing - just like the ocean. The velvety crab bisque was a highlight, although the red pepper may have overpowered the fresh crab flavor. For mains, we opt for the Fallow Deer Choo that was sold out for the night. Our second choice was the mallard with pumpkin & radicchio - which turned out to be great for sharing and perfectly cooked to a medium and was super tender.Comparing the 4 London restaurants that made it to the Top 100 best restaurants in the World list, Lyles is absolutely the favorite, followed by Clover Club and then Brat. Would highly recommend to check out Lyles the next time you are in London
Be the first to ReplyI loved the food here.
I tried the oyster, anchovy grilled bread, grilled mackerel, and plaice. The oyster was fresh and scrumptious. The bread was a burst of umami flavors. The fish dishes had lovely combinations of textures and the flavors went well with the wines that were recommended to me. The service was friendly and overall I had a great time.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great service.
One of the best dining experiences in recent memory. The pigeon was fantastic.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful food and service.
Whole turbot was outstanding. Only issue was the closest tube station is very far so we had to take a car.
Be the first to ReplyA smaller menu offering.
The atmosphere was nice, a lofted view of the street, and food was generally good, not great. In the mussels dish (of ~7/8 mussels) there was a mussel that was rotten. For £150 I was hoping the turbot to be spectacular but it really fell short. I love whole fish but this was just an ugly m-fer.
Be the first to ReplyWe absolutely loved our lunch at Brat.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent, it's really great to see the chefs hard at work in the kitchen while waiting for each course. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. And of course the food was brilliant. We had some really unique and exciting dishes, and even a simple dish like the chorizo was served with love and was hands down the best chorizo we've had in a long time.Next time we are in London we will definitely try and make time to return to Brat, and we have already recommended our friends dine there when possible.
Be the first to ReplyThe pictures don't do this place justice.
The food here is phenomenal and is an exception a culinary journey. This place is deserving of its Michelin star without all the frills and $-tag that generally come with a Michelin star. I hope this place continues operating like the semi-hidden gem it is. One of my favorite dishes here is the velvet crab soup. The crab is already deconstructed when served, making it easy to eat. It's the one item I regretfully didn't get a solid picture of! D: All the dishes were a standout as they are cooked over an open flame. The meats (lamb chop and beef sirloin) were both cooked to a beautiful medium rare, resulting in an amazing texture. The flavors in the dish were deep and balanced well. The place is pretty small, so be sure to have reservations before hopping over!
Be the first to ReplyThis was by far our favorite dinner in London.
Rib steak was one of the best. Grilled bread was one of the best. Great wine selection and the service is spot on. Also a very cool space in a cool neighborhood. We were treated so well and everyone was friendly and helpful. I couldn't recommend this more. My only hope would be cocktails in the future but this doesn't weaken the experience at all. We loved it! My wife was pregnant and they were so accommodating. Thank you to everyone at Brat that works so hard. It makes for a fabulous dinner! We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely a good place to get meat and their whole fish
Definitely a good place to get meat and their whole fish looked amazing, but place is very pricey and service was a bit pushy. Four of us went for lunch. They kindly squeezed us in with no reservation. We ordered a bunch of smaller plates and a couple of mains. Were told by server that we hadn't ordered enough food and if we wanted another main order, it would be another 30 minutes. While I appreciate her "heads up", her delivery felt like an ultimatum. The wood-fired grill is pretty amazing and food was good; just need to work on being a bit more welcoming and a little less rushed.

Although I'm not a meat eater, I still enjoyed my meal at Brat. From the young leeks to the potatoes and tomatoes, the food was well flavored and I was satisfied. My friend had a fish item and she thoroughly enjoyed it and we finished the meal with the cheesecake which was really delicious and unique.
