This review is way overdue.
Been coming here for over 12 years. The food and spices are so flavorful. I like to get the veggie and meat combo just to try a little bit of everything. Sometimes I'll order other dishes not in the combo and it is just so good. What makes this different from other Ethiopian restaurant is the garlic chickpea hummus. I'm not sure what it's called but it reminds me of hummus. It's soooo good. You can tell the food here is made with love and it shows. I live in Los Angeles now and we have a little Ethiopia on Fairfax, however nothing has been comparable to Cafe RAMANAT.

Super yummy! This is some of the best injera I've had and they were not skimpy on giving it to you. Spongey and sour, moist and not dry. Great vegetarian and vegan options. I went with the veggie combo and got 5 different items to taste. Everything was flavorful and colorful, good solid portions that left me stuffed. I'd come back to try some meat options. Felt reasonably priced for amount of food received.

I went there recently, was my first time eating ethiopian food and I really enjoyed the experience. A very good place, incredilbe atmosphere, nice service and fair price. I wanna get back soon.

My Ethiopian friend recommended Cafe Romanat, and me and my partner have been in love ever since, its one of our main go-to restaurants. I love Ethiopian food and this restaurant is by far my favorite Ethiopian food in the Bay. It is delicious, great service, fast, fresh and sooo tasty. I always get veggie combo and we were told to try the mushroom tibs. I can''t recommend this place enough!! 10/10 highly recommend :)

Their food is consistently fresh and delicious! Highly recommend. In my top 2 of Ethiopian places in the whole Bay Area!
Be the first to ReplyI go here for Ethiopian salads.
They put just the right amount of zesty dressing on it and it's just made with love ughh. They are friendly and clean. Thanks to all the staff here!
Be the first to ReplyOur new go to Ethiopian spot.
Not only are the prices the best in town but the portions are huge and they give you tons of injera, unlike a few others where you always need more. Veggie Combo is more than enough for one person. Perfect meal for 2 is one combo and add the mushroom tibs. Sooo good. Meat combo is amazing too. Cant really go wrong here! Always has the perfect level of spice too. Not bland, not burning - just right.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Ethiopian food and consistent quality.
I usually get the veggie sampler plate when solo dining so as to have an assortment of flavors with one order.

Well, I had a good chuckle upon reading the review that said they lost consciousness after eating the buticha. And then, I had the buticha. It may be my perfect plate of food. Everything else was delicious as well. We wanted to add one more meat to our veggie and meat combo and our server recommended the beef tibs. The meat was tender and the tomatoes fresh with the perfect amount of acidity. They were the star. Like most other reviewers shared- the space and vibe is great. Somehow it feels both sparse/open but warm. I would go here on a date but great for family or group night too. Service was awesome - so friendly and helpful. They have GF injera for $2 extra. We have tried a lot of Ethiopian in Oakland and Berkeley and I highly recommend this spot!
Be the first to Replythis is my favorite ethiopian restaurant in oakland.

My favorite Ethiopian restaurant in the Bay Area! Love the food and staff! If I could eat here once a week I would! Thank you Cafe Romanat!
Be the first to ReplySo I wish I could give this infinite stars.
I had a spiritual experience here. It's been 5 days and I can't stop thinking about the meal. How did I not know about this place? What the heck have I been doing? My cousin took us and she just kept saying..'you'll see.' And I do. I see the light. First we ordered the Buticha. That's when I lost consciousness and woke up in a dreamland. It's kinda like hummus but better. It's so creamy and earthy. There is a salad on the plate and the citrus dressing mixed with the creaminess of the dip with the best injera I've ever had...made the perfect bite! I couldn't stop eating it. None of us could. And there's a spicy red sauce that is on the side that has a nice heat and fantastic flavor. It pulls it all together. Warning don't fill up on this like we did. The injera expands in your tummy like nothing else. And then you won't have room for the other goodies. We also got the vegetarian Sambussa which are like an Indian samosa. They are very hot inside so wait a bit for them to cool. The filling was meaty but there was no meat. So crispy and perfect for dipping in more Buticha. The 4 of us shared the veggie and meat combo and it was huge! We got two of everything. We couldn't finish it. The collard greens really stood out and I also loved the Lentil and the split peas. Everything was great. Chicken was moist, lamb was delicious and the beef was tender. I got an iced tea which was different for me. It had the taste of allspice, but subtle. Really good.Service was at a nice pace. You are meant to sit and enjoy and relax. I loved every second. I will go back many times. And the I found out they had a Michelin award! Of course they did.The only issue was parking. We parked blocks away in the residential area. But we were so full we ended up walking up and down Grand and back to the car to work it off. Bathroom was clean and there is an extra sink outside to wash your hands since you eat with your hands. Enjoy!!

Went to Oakland and I heard that there's a lot of Ethiopian joints - Romanat was one of the recommended ones. I'm not an expert on Ethiopian food as I've only had it a few times, but Romanat was great. Much better compared to other places I've been to. 1. Buticha: think hummus Ethiopian-style but much better. Fluffy, silky smooth, and wonderful. Garlicky in the best way. Came with some injera to scoop up all that goodness. A perfect starter. 2. Meat and veggie combo platter for two people: great flavors, especially for the meat dishes. Only complaint was that they were a bit stingy with the meat and it didn't come with much of it - mostly sauce. Very very generous with the injera though. 3. Also got an Ethiopian coffee. Nuff said. Ethiopian coffee is always amazing. Strong, fruity, and acidic.Overall, Romanat is a great Ethiopian joint worth going to if you find yourself in Oakland.
Be the first to ReplyWent there with partner and two friends who are vegetarian.
Ordered two veggie platters, one with zero spice, and one with regular spice. Both were delicious. (The "zero" spice hummus was still slightly too spicy for two of my friends.)I ordered the raw kitfo and loved it - beef was delicious with just the right amount of heat. All of the portions were very generous. We were all hungry when we arrived and even still there were some food left to take some home. (I would estimate at least 1.5lbs of beef in the Kitfo plate)I'll be back soon!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious amazing food.
We ordered the sambusas and misir wot and it was perfect. We have been coming here for years and it is always good.
Be the first to ReplyUsed to eat here weekly.
Then sadly moved out of the Bay and now miss Romanat more than anything. Eat here so I can live vicariously through you.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a great dinner last night.
The food here will leave your tummy feeling happy. Cool ambiance. Will go back again.
Be the first to ReplyThis beautiful restaurant was such a lovely experience.
Adey was so kind and such an incredible host! This authentic Ethiopian food was very delicious. The veggie sambussas were amazing! I could eat here again and again. Thanks for sitting with us in a traditional coffee ceremony.

Amazing flavors - sambosas were some of the best I've had in Oakland. Serving sizes were small for the price though
Be the first to ReplyA real hidden gem of a restaurant in Oakland.
Be prepared to eat with your hands. No utensils! Enjoy the ethnic experience of using the bread provided to pick up the various delicacies offered you. The way to go is the meat and veggie combo (reads like a pizza special).Included are a chicken stew, a lamb stew, and a meaty collard green dish, plus a red lentil dish, a hummus offering, another bean dish, and a salad. Plenty to try and share, in portions for one, two, or four diners. Everything quite tasty and a unique dining experience, as well as insight into Ethiopian culture. No reservations needed.

We stopped in after watching a movie at the beloved Grand Lake Theater. There were four of us, and we ordered a combo platter for four. It was delicious and the engera bread was generous and really good, which is not always the case at Ethiopian restaurants. The restaurant is spacious, and there is one outside table.

Ended up going with the meat combo, the meat dishes them selves are quite good but the injera here is quite purely done. I think they go a bit hard with the flour and light on teft without full time to ferment as the injera was thick but not super spongy. The coffee was also incredibly acidicDecent place but better options out there
Be the first to ReplyGreat food! We shared a combination veggie and meat platter
Great food! We shared a combination veggie and meat platter between four people and had more than enough for each of us, plus leftovers! The meat is so tender and well spiced! The collard greens are spectacular (and I am not a fan of collard greens). Every item on the platter was well prepared and delicious. We will definitely return!!

I used to love this place as they had the best bang for the buck ; amazing flavor, amazing service , and realistic proportions . However ; the portion sizes have been cut In half and for 1 person with a veggie sampler , Teff injera, and tip the cost is close to $26. At that price I'd rather go a little further out of my way and enjoy a more substantial veggie sampler on Telegraph.
