Canje is undeniably one of Austin's hottest restaurants right now. From the moment you step inside, the ambiance sets the stage for an extraordinary dining experience. The service is amazing, and the food? Fresh and flavorful. Despite its Caribbean flair, Canje's cuisine is some of the best in Austin. Approach your dinner with an open mind, and prepare to be blown away. Once you've tasted the flavors of Canje, you'll find yourself eagerly counting down the days until your next visit, craving their food all the time. Heads up, if you like spicy the chicken has a KICK. I personally can't handle the heat but I've still tried it and it's amazing.

Service was good and ambience was nice, except where we sat I felt like when it got darker outside didn't have enough light. Drink: Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned had a sweet taste to it which I LOVED! It tasted like a Sazerac, which I prefer over old fashioned. Appetizer: The Albacore Ceviche was my favorite dish of the night! It was citrusy, had some peanuts (so beware of allergies), and it also was sweet. Entree: Curry Waugh Beef was my second favorite dish of the night and highly recommend pairing it with the Roti! The Roti was so good that we ordered two of them. Ok hear me out here.. EVERYONE recommend the Jerk Chicken here so we got it, and while it was cooked well and very moist/tender, it was my least favorite dish. It was just plain, with some kick to it. The other dishes were way better in my opinion. Dessert: Tres Leches was so yummy! It had a fruity taste to it because of the strawberry and I loved it!

We had the best experience at Canje last night! Everything from the food to the service was impeccable. Every dish we tried was so thoughtfully created, from appetizers to desserts. We tried several things but the Jerk Chicken, Albacore Ceviche, Guyanese Roti, and Fried Sweet Plantains are not to be missed! The Chocolate Flan was the best of the two desserts we shared but it's relative because the Tres Leches was also delicious. You truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu here! Thank you for making my husband's birthday so special and yummy, Canje team!!

Wholly unpretentious atmosphere with excellent food. Patio was perfect in the evening. Every dish was complex, balanced, worth the time to discover all the layered flavors and ingredients. We couldn't get enough! We shared these items and would order each of them time and again. We were so impressed that we ended up visiting twice in one week. The menu offered a diverse range of dishes, and we couldn't resist trying a variety - beef patties, ceviche, guacamole, roti, jerk chicken, and more. Each dish was a masterpiece, with mouthwatering flavors that left us craving for more. The quality of the food was exceptional, and the presentation was visually stunning. The drinks were also delicious and refreshing. The restaurant itself had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with super nice staff who made us feel welcome. We can't wait to go back and indulge in more of their culinary delights. If you're looking for a truly memorable dining experience, look no further. 5 stars and highly recommended!"

Loved the overall ambiance of Canje. At 5:00, there was a decent number of people, music was in full swing, and the servers buzzed around. I enjoyed the warm, bohemian decor as well. Service was amazing! I unfortunately do not know the name of our waitress but she was the best. She had deep knowledge of the menu, offered recommendations based on our preferences, and was just a ball of sunshine. Love her! Funny story: when I was trying to beat my dad to the bill, she swooped in and took my dad's card LOL. Now for the food. We ordered the ceviche, sweet potato, jerk chicken, and guyanese roti. It was a lot! To be honest, I would not order this much if I come back again but I had to ball out in honor of the solar eclipse and my dad visiting. The ceviche was light, refreshing, and not fishy at all. Lots of citrus notes. Sweet potato was an unexpected heavy hitter. Not the biggest fan of orange sweet potatoes but this hit because of the many contradictions. There was sweetness and softness from the potato, yet acidic, savory, and crunchy from the aioli, beans, and green onions. For all my vegans, I recommend getting this dish. Canje is notorious for their jerk chicken so I was HYPED. The skin was nicely charred and marinated in flavor for sure. I also appreciated the tenderness of the meat -- which is hard to do for white meat -- and the subtle flavor it imparted from the marinade. I will say it does pack quite a punch in terms of spice. I am Thai and used to my fair share of heat, so this was unexpected lol. The accompanying sauce does help in subsiding the spice. But... something about the chicken just did not impress me? Perhaps I was full from all the other dishes or just had super lofty expectations. Not sure. I liked the Guyanese roti though! Always a fiend for a starch of any sort :). Overall I recommend coming here to bring family or friends visiting, a girl's night out, or a date! Ambiance and service won't leave you disappointed. Food quality is pretty top notch too.

Good, interesting food, but so loud I thought my head was going to actually implode. Inside is a no-go zone. I've been in loud places but this place is the worst, ever.
I used to love Canje.
..it's gone down a bit in quality and experience for me. The food, somehow, isn't as good as when they began. Be it menu changes, or just the volume of customers, it's starting to suffer a bit, and that's a shame. Also, it's LOUD in that room. The music on weekends, is a bit overbearing, and that's likely because the room is generally loud due to the patrons. Overcoming it with blasting music isn't a great solve.

With vibes as cool as a Caribbean breeze, this place nails the fusion game. The service was exceptional! They practically serenade you with descriptions of their dishes. Now, let's talk food. The albacore ceviche? Sweet peppers and crushed peanuts? It's like a flavor explosion in your mouth! And those oxtail empanadas? So tender, they practically melt in your mouth. For mains, we went wild with the Wild Boar Pepperpot. Very aromatic and that puppy melts on your tongue (it's a common theme of melting in your mouth lol.) And the Tilefish served with crispy kale was something I've never had that was quite the pairing. Paired with roti, peppered rice, and salted plantains? It's a match made for a perfect death row meal. But dessert, ah, the "Tres Leche." With strawberry compote, salted foam and white chocolate shavings, it's a very interesting flavor combination. Not my favorite, but hey, can't win them all. Overall, Canje is a must-visit for foodies.

Free parking in their lot on the east side of the restaurant so can avoid valet. Take credit card The music inside is super loud, too loud to have a conversation. So we Sat outside cause it wasn't too hot. Great service. Pepper pot wild boar ($26)- the pepper pot flavor very interesting. The sauce was salty. The wild boar was a little tough. It's interesting to try. Oxtail beef patties ($14)- get this! The best dish I had. The meat is super soft and great flavor. Ceviche albacore ($18)- super good. Has orange flavor which is interesting. I think it's better than typical Mexican ceviche with lemon, this isn't sour. Octopus and shrimp ($21)- Octopus super soft. Good sauce on the bottom. Roti $5- well baked. Great texture outside. Fluffy outside. Great to eat with any other dish with sauce

I had to come back and add to this review, because I've been back so many times and I just had my baby shower here last night. This place not only has the best food in Austin, they are the nicest, most welcoming restaurant in the city. I have never had such an incredible experience at a restaurant before, these are seriously just amazing folks all around. They made me and our party feel so welcome and were so accommodating! They allowed me to make a ton of menu requests for our large party and even invited me back to meet the chef. It was such a great experience I will truly never forgot it. If you're still reading this, I urge you to book Canje for your next event. Also, I want to say that they are always working to improve their food, even though it's already so good. Every time I go, I notice my favorites change a little and get a little better each time. I love that they put so much care into everything they make. To the whole staff at Canje, thank you!!!

I love all the love plants, the lighting and the decor are so perfect. The service is too notch. Every person that waited on our table was so nice, took time explaining every dish and seemed passionate about working there. The food is AMAZING! We did the tasting menu. It was so much food we walked out stuffed. If you too choose the tasting menu, definitely don't eat before you go. We had the Ceviche, Plantain Chips, Accra de Morue, Pink Pineapple, Fried Sweet Plantains, Sweet Potato, Jerk Chicken, Curry Wagyu Beef, Tres Leches and the Rum Punch Sorbet. The ceviche was a crowd pleaser. Everyone loved that dish. The pink pineapple is so refreshing I wish we would have had that with the entrees because they had some spice to them. The sweet, freshness of the fruit would have helped cool the heat from the spice. Every dish is so creative and packed full of flavor. The depth of flavors in the dishes exciting. The sorbet at the end of the dish was spot on. The tangy sweetness packed in there is so fantastic! Be sure to enjoy a cocktail with your meal. I had the First Dance. Yum! Everything about this dinner was excellent.

Unique and flavorful
Phenomenal meal. Pricey but worth it. One of the best meals I've had in ages. Albacore ceviche was a standout as was the tres leches dessert. The jerk chicken was wonderful but so spicy I only made it through one piece - they mean it when they say spicy!

I have never had such good Cajun food with Texas flare like I have here! The plantains are heavenly and the jerk chicken is out of the park better than any other I've had in Austin so far! If you are looking for a great friends dinner place or a date night, I recommend this place for sure!
Do yourself a favor and order the wild boar cassareep.
It's fatty pig in deep flavored sugary molasses sauce reduction. The best thing I've tasted since an east African restaurant in Brooklyn. In a city of brisket, this is tasty on a ridiculous level.

Best meal I have ever had. Flavors were innovative and unexpected. Everything was tops. The Ox tail was slightly boring, but that's compared to the other amazing offerings.

This is our new favorite date place - it's in a fun part of town and the food is special. We're not total foodies, but we do appreciate an excellent meal with interesting flavors. The service was good - highly recommend the fish and next time, we will get the jerk chicken. Can't wait!

not to be one of those people who are Iike "i liked this before it was cool" but .... i visited canje before it was hella mainstream :P the first few times i went required no reservation and very little waiting but these days, i highly recommend booking a reservation, especially for weekends. nothing about the service particularly stood out to me but no bad things are a good thing igthe food is kinda expensive imo and the taste/quality is about or a little less than what you pay for. however, there are 3 things on the menu that i consistently think about and would be happy to order over and over again. guyanese style roti: 9.3/10 | omg. perfectly flakey and buttery and it goes so well with pretty much anything they have on the menu. i could also eat it by itself every day for every meal; its that goodjerk chicken: 8.9/10 | soooo juicy and flavorful. the chicken is cooked so much better than i could ever do and the spices add the perfect amount of heat (although i do prefer spicier food overall so maybe it's too spicy for some)tres leches: 8.7/10 | it's not too sweet (which is compliment) and the texture of the cake is soft, spongey, and moist. the guava compliments the white chocolate and im willing to bet i could eat the entire cake

Extremely disappointing.
Food was over seasoned and salty. I love Caribbean flavors but the shrimp was so salty and served chopped up in little pieces. Overpriced for what you get. Service was strange because hostess and busser where more helpful and attentive than our actual server who insisted we place our entire dinner order including apps and entrees all at once then never checked in on us even after my wife got physically sick from something in the shrimp app. Pork chop was served raw, inedible.

I will start by saying that the food here is interesting and good (although I did have a bit of a tummy ache in the middle of the night). The curry was good, a bit fatty but good, and the ceviche was sweet. I love a good stew and they have their sauces down here. My favorite part was the bread. The issue here is the service, which is on top of you to the point of annoyance. They really want to get you out of the restaurant. I felt like the food was being shoved down my throat as were my drinks. Plate were cleared with bites still on them. Rounds of people would come to the table trying to take the plates. It is beyond annoying and intrusive at this price point. We spent 200 for two people and we ate our whole meal and we're handed our check with full glasses and dessert on the table- all in less than an hour! You also have to scream in here because the music is so loud. The ambiance is truly awful.

Top to bottom one of the best Caribbean upscale places I have ever tried! The food and drinks are phenomenal with a huge variety and depth of flavor-- all built with high quality and fresh ingredients. Service was fast and all the waitstaff were extremely kind and attentive without being overbearing. All in all a really great experience that I highly recommend to others and will absolutely come back for next time I'm in Austin.

Canje was delicious! Elegant and upscale, definitely a fun spot for a date night. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable about vegan options. We tried the plantain chips, smoked avocado escabeche, and pink pineapple (all are or can be modified vegan). All so delicious and especially recommend the pink pineapple. We then split the sweet potato Suppa and the rice, all made vegan. Cocktails are great too! Be sure to make a reservation.

We finally got a chance to try Canje since we had to cancel our reservation due to the ice storm. The ambience was amazing. Music was dope. They played a large variety of Afrobeats, Caribbean, and Latino music. The service was amazing from the hostess to the various servers to our actual server. Each person explained the dishes in great detail along with the flavors that were incorporated. The meals are meant to be family style and shared. Our main server assisted in ensuring that we rounded out our meal and offered suggestions for additional menu items. Now about the food...to claim that it was absolutely delicious would not do it justice! Come up with a word or words to describe the best dishes you've had in your life and it still would not describe how well the food was executed at Canje! The cocktails were amazing. Don't be afraid of the boar lard rye in the Cassareep Old Fashion you can't even taste it and it added body to the drink. The Rocket Fuel cocktail was definitely that! Great flavors and packed the punch. Plantain chips and sauces were great. Very light and flavorful. The oxtail empanadas were a little pricey for the portion size but were AMAZING. The pink pineapple was bright, refreshing & flavorful. The Bacalaíto was great but a little salty, but that is to be expected for a salt fish fritter. The wild boar pepper pot was very tender and was an explosion of flavors that meshed very well and is guaranteed to have you scraping the bottom of your bowl. The curry wavy beef was also very flavorful and has a little kick from the spices. Both dishes paired well with the Carolina Gold Rice "Djondjon". The Guyanese Style Roti was amazing. We would've tried dessert, but were so full from our meals. I guess that just means we have to go back again.We promise you will not be disappointed from eating at Canje. Definitely lives up to being named one of the 10 best restaurant in the nation by Bon Appetit and one of the 50 best restaurants in the country by The New York Times.

We had the jerk chicken, after visiting Jamaica we needed another taste. The chicken was very SPICY. I would say to the point of it wasn't enjoyable because you couldn't taste anything. Had a side of golden rice which was great and their famous bread. Not sure I would go back and get the jerk chicken again. But cool place to experience.

We did our research prior and discovered that Canje is one of the restaurants recommended by multiple lists of best dining experiences in Austin. Definitely make reservations early because they tend to book! The ambiance is more relaxed rather than formal and the food and service were superb

I'm writing this review almost a year later, but that's how long this meal has stuck with me. I was giving recommendations to a friend of where to go in Austin, and I told him this is a can't miss restaurant. The food is creative and the atmosphere is fun. I didn't know what to expect with every dish, but everything was fantastic. You will not be disappointed by going here.

I was caught lacking and wound up with 10 PM dinner reservations, though luckily they seated us upon our slightly early arrival. It helps that we asked to sit outside, which we did not because it would help us get seated faster but because it was overwhelmingly loud inside.The best part of all the dishes we tasted, especially the grilled pink shrimp, was the sauces. Both entrees we ordered (the tilefish and the pepper pot), were sweeter than we expected. Same goes for the roti, which in addition to being sweeter than the kind you'd get at an Indian restaurant was also so buttery it smelled like movie theater popcorn- in a good way.Also unlike an Indian restaurant, rice and roti must be ordered separately, but it's worth it to do so using the money you should save by skipping cocktails (which were tasty but honestly not an integral part of the experience) and ordering Red Stripes instead. Funnily enough, while the entrees were all sweeter than I had expected, the arroz con leche was less sweet than anticipated, and I loved it for that reason. Definitely ended the meal on a high note.

We wanted a new experience for my husband's birthday, so I made reservations a month ahead. The restaurant vibe was fun, and we were seated in the back dining room close to the bar. It was fabulous, a smaller quieter venue where conversation could be enjoyed without yelling at each other or hearing everyone around you. The cocktails were wonderful, my husband craved a Pisco Sour and although many places say that they can make it - Canje made the best Pisco Sour since our trip to Peru!! Their inhouse cocktails were very creative and delicious. The ceviche, jerk chicken, wild boar pepper pot, roti, plantain chips and desserts were all fabulous. The jerk chicken was really enough for 2 - it was a huge portion and provided yummy leftovers for home. Finally the service was wonderful, they team serve and each person who arrived at our table was not only professional but personal enough to make us feel so comfortable!! We will be back - again and again!
First time, worth a try!
Canje is different! Very nice place, food and drinks are very creative. Loved the Hog pepperpot and the jerk chicken (it's spicy hot!). Certainly a chic place (food, ambience and prices). Nadeem did a great job of explaining the menu and drinks and was very attentive! If you are near Canje it's a place to go more than once. I live in the burbs so it's a bit far but still worth the try!

After reading several reviews about Canje being the best new Austin restaurant, we made a reservation a month in advance and brought the family here over the holidays. We were ushered to the back room which has none of the fun vibe of the front, despite having our reservation well in advance. I enjoyed my thyme infused drink. We ordered 3 appetizers to share. The dinners were ok - I got the jerk chicken which was very spicy but good. The service was good. The food was very average. Nothing to write home about. I'm so tired of these supposed "sharing" restaurants who give you tiny portions and then tell you to order 5 things per person with each item being regular priced and tiny. Won't go back.

Fantastic Caribbean/Guyana food. Innovative flavor combinations and the best Jerk Chicken ever. Great cocktails and excellent service make this place worth a detour to Austin-which we did.
Creative and Exciting Cuisine
Every dish we ordered at this restaurant shined with interesting and creative flavors. We had the bacalaito (salt fish fritter), a large, crisp fish and potato pancake served with a delicious sauce; the albacore ceviche, tender pieces of tuna in a light and refreshing orange broth with sweet peppers and peanuts, served with taro chips; pink pineapple, a fruit salad that also included guava and passion fruit with basil and a lemongrass sauce; acorn squash with black beans and coconut with a lime aioli; and grouper in a tamarind sauce with grilled mango. Merely listing the dishes doesn’t convey how truly extraordinary this food is. The ingredients are prepared expertly and each dish we had was served with a flavorful and well-balanced sauce or broth with surprising flavors that perfectly complimented these ingredients. The staff is fantastic - they are knowledgeable about the food, attentive, and work smoothly together. We arrived for our reservation and were told that the party at our table had just ordered dessert but we could be seated at a bar table and get started with drinks and appetizers. While we waited, one of the front staff explained the menu to us and gave us several recommendations (I wish I knew her name, she was so warm and gracious). Nick, who took our order once we were seated at our table, guided us on dishes that worked with our food allergies and preferences, and along with other staff, did a great job of taking care of us throughout the meal. The meal was perfectly paced, with courses coming out slowly enough to each get our full attention but with no lag time. Although we only waited 10 minutes or so for our table, the staff apologized about the wait and ended up comping us two of our appetizers. A delight of a meal.

3.) Finding the Reservation
