Chalong NYC New York Reviews from The Last Year

Omg this place is saur good! Would definitely recommend making a reservation via Resy or something beforehand because it gets saur busy, but it's definitely worth it. Everything on the menu was incredible including the thai iced tea (which can be a miss at some places!) and the dessert (mango sticky rice). The garlic ribs were so good, the pad khee mao, the goong karee, and kra praw were all so amazing! The prices were also incredibly reasonable for how delicious everything was. The service was fast and friendly, too - love this place!

Omg. The goat is to die for. It comes with some sort of bread that's mixed between a tortilla and pastry dough. Can't say enough about food and service. Also the only beer they serve is great.
Google Maps will not publish this review, so Yelp: 1).
Food is EXTREMELY SWEET. This is not Thai, this is "Thai-style" food for Americans who don't know or like the real thing. The kitchen must put a tablespoon of sugar into every dish. My Thai wife could not finish her main course and muttered "what are they doing?" throughout the meal. 2) Their heat levels are one and two asterisks. The waitress strongly advised me (being white, I guess) that ** would be far too much, my head would explode, so I order *. It had no spice at all. On this scale, I would have preferred ****. 3) The food comes very fast, one course after another, to get you in and out for the next table. 4) US pop music is played extremely loud. Not for people who want to talk. All that said, the place is extremely popular with the targeted demographic. It is the only restaurant in Hell's Kitchen we have seen that has a line in the street. So the 4 concerns above a minority view.
I'd like to say it is one of the best Thai restaurant in NY.
The menu provides a wide variety of authentic Thai foods. We ordered Goat curry, green curry, steam fish, and others. All of them are ready delicious.

Ordered the curry shrimp taco (!), soft shell crab curry, mango sticky rice (warm mango but otherwise yum), shrimp noodles. spicy, bright, and strong. The host service leaves much to be desired but server was very nice. Ambience was super cute.
Food is good! I loved the vibe and service is really good.
Loved the curry and fried rice.

Good food and services! Ppl are very nice and responsive here. Like the green curry!!
Chalong was great.
I recommend this restaurant. The ambiance, service and food were all perfect. We had phenomenal service from beginning to end. The food was spicy , except the rice but that was exactly what I was looking for. I will definitely be back when I visit New York again.
Came on a Friday night for dinner with a group of friends.
We didn't have to wait too long with a reservation, but it is a popular restaurant so reservations would be needed during rush hours. We ordered a variety of dishes to share and everything was delicious. We also each ordered a drink in the case that some of the dishes we ordered would be a bit too spicy for us. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and would like to go back to try other dishes as well. The staff were all very friendly.

My friend recommended this place and since we were in the area, decided to try and walk in at opening. 11:55am on a Saturday, we saw a bunch of people already waiting outside! We were seated with no issue. Decor is super cute with gold accents and lots of greenery- the bar is in the center of the restaurant. Service was very nice and attentive- the service team was very friendly and checked in on us frequently. My friend and I shared the Green Curry Brisket and also the Steamed Fish- both come with a bowl of rice (and trust me, you're gonna need a lot of rice because the food was PHENOMENAL- you're going to want to keep eating and eating!) The Green Curry Brisket had just the perfect amount of subtle heat (don't eat the chilis that are sprinkled throughout though, you're gonna have a bad time). The brisket meat was a little tough so my one suggestion is for them to stew it longer to break down the chewiness. The round vegetables that are served with the curry are Thai eggplants! Same as the meat, they were a bit too hard, so again, suggest they cook these down too. The curry itself was fantastic- fragrant, a little spicy, and so so delicious! The true star of the table was, however, the Steamed Fish. The sea bass was cooked to perfection and was so nice and tender. Served in a chili lime sauce with garlic and mint, it had a subtle tangy flavor that was addicting. Even after we finished the fish, we kept scooping the sauce onto the rice because it was so good. Honestly, if they sold just the sauce, I would buy it and take it home and put it on EVERYTHING. I'm not in this part of the city often but after this meal, I'm ready to "commute" to this restaurant. Can't wait to try their fried rices next!
Came here with a large group on a Friday night.
It's a max 2 hour seating policy. We did family style for the appetizers and tried the peek gai Tod-which were small wings and were crispy; phuket pak mor-which was packed with flavor. For my entree I got kee mao seafood, which was flavorful and spicy. The shrimp pieces were butterflied and clean and were marinated well. I will say the portion size for the pricing is a bit off compared to a lot of Thai places in the city. From an ambience stand point, it is loud. We were with a big group and I felt like I had to scream to be heard. Not a good place for a first date. The food came out in a reasonable time. I would come back but would try another time that hopefully isn't as busy or loud.

Every dish here exceeded my expectation! Chalong is NYC's first Southern Thai-focused restaurant, located in Hell's Kitchen. I love their Goong Karee, it is phenomenal. The dish is stir fry shrimp with scrambled egg curry. The Moo Hong is a six-hour braised pork belly dish, and it is on the sweeter side but incredibly tender. Each main dish is served with rice, though their Khao Pad Mun Nuer fried rice is exceptional! We were seated quickly with a revelation, and dishes arrive very quickly after ordering. The bar seatings on the right side of the bar are not too great. We have to get up every time the tables behind us need to get out. This is the only downside, the food and service are great. The interior is very cute with Thai elements for the decoration.

Been wanting to try Chalong for the longest time after hearing great things; and to be honest, it fell really flat to me. A stunning interior and beautiful bar with a very fun and cool cocktail menu. Our server was sweet enough to break down the menu for us, but when it came to ordering, I feel like she forced us to order what she wanted. She was definitely upcharging us and I felt awkward to say anything against her with my mom at the table. Our server also gave us an hour 10 minute time limit at our table which felt odd. Would have been more than happy to sit at the bar or any orher table if communicated properly. We got the Lumpu Salad, Crab Curry, and Pla Tod. All were fine, standout would have been the Lumpu Salad. There is so much amazing Thai Food all on 9th street. Chalong definitely elevates classic dishes, but is way to pricey for me to justify ever coming back. Despite stellar reviews, will not be back.

Update - I don't know how to reply to the comment from the business owner (cannot find a button to click on Yelp for the reply), so I am writing here --- it is nice that the owner is on top of the comments on Yelp. Many aren't. Appreciated. As I said, the food is always good, so we will be eventually back when we have a lot of time to kill in case of waiting and when my friend is less angry. -------------- Their reservation system is totally messed up. We had to wait 42 minutes after our reservation time. We saw others going in, so we asked why. "Our reservation system is not working right" was the answer. We complained, but NO apologies were given. We finally sat down at a table, but one of us was still upset and complained to the waitress. She gave us a free appetizer which was nice, but at the end, it was not free on the bill, so we had to ask them to adjust the bill so that we wouldn't pay for the item we didn't order. Food here is always good.

Chalong is a fun, buzzy restaurant with a great date-worthy atmosphere. The service was good but maybe too quick. I called for a table around 7pm on a Saturday night and we waited about an hour for our table, which is reasonable considering the hype and that you can call ahead. We started our meal with the Lumpu Salad, which was recommended to us by our server. The Lumpu Salad is a fresh oyster salad with chili paste, fried shallots, cilantro, mint, pea shoots and a seafood sauce. This was my favorite bite of the meal because it was something new to my pallet and unlike any other salad I've had before. For my entree, I ordered the See Iew Chicken, which is a flat rice noodle dish with chicken, egg, and baby Chinese broccoli. The dish was similar to the Thai restaurant standard Pad See Ew. The food came out very quickly and they didn't course our food out so everything arrived roughly at the same time. For me, they lose a star for this. I'd like to try this place again and be more adventurous with my choices.
Great service and reliably amazing food.
A Hell's Kitchen go-to and I always recommend it to friends and family. Love it!

Popped in here without a reservation and were sat at the bar, no problem. Food was amazing. I had the crab curry which was delicious -- the spice perfectly balanced with the coconut. Husband got the pork belly which was really nice as well. Started with the phuket pak mor, which is never had before. Great, friendly service
Not your typical Thai - very creative and very yummy food.
Prices reasonable and service quick - would definitely go again

* food is consistently excellent across the 6-7 entrees and 6-7 starters we have tried over two visits so far (crab curry, goat curry, ribs, steamed fish, crab cakes, ...) * drinks are great; tried about 5-6 of the specialty cocktails over our two visits, all consistently great * ambience is chic and tasteful and pairs with a great buzz and vibe * last but not least the staff on both visits was sharp, conversational, felt like they went the extra mile; very nice, you can tell when the team enjoys working at a place One minor downside is their dessert (the mango sticky rice) is also great and tends to run out since dependent on quality of mangoes they have received that day/week... is worth placing that order in right at the beginning with your starters/entrees!
Might just be my new favorite thai spot in the city.
Everything absolutely blew me away, from the perfect portion sizes (we got 1 app, 4 dishes, and 1 side for 3 ppl), the flavorful dishes, and fresh seafood without feeling over the top full as with other thai places. My standout, must order 5/5 dishes are: -Shrimp taco appetizers : the shrimp was so succulent, the paste was so flavorful and the coconut cracker shell was so light. the perfect one bite -Steamed fish: more tender than it looks and the broth is not overly sour (which I thought at fish cheeks) -Grilled Hor Muk: never had anything like this before. It's labeled the spiciest level but honestly was not too bad (and my spice tolerance is pretty low). Since the fish is mixed in with a paste, the bite is bursting with flavors and so tender (little chewing required) -Mushrooms: a little pricey for mushrooms but the flavor of these were absolutely fantastic I also loved the green curry brisket and the side of veggies. They were both really really solid 4/5, just nothing to rave about like the other 4 dishes. Another thing to note is that the service is super super fast, which is amazing! Food came out within 10-15 minutes of us ordering.

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
