Clarke Cooke House Newport Reviews
Good but not great dinner.
I had the hamachi jalapeno and the spider roll. Spider roll had clearly been cooked hours before and was not crunchy. Portion sizes l, wine list and service were good.
One of the best places in Newport.
Great food great atmosphere. Most fun place in. Summer sushi is awesome., amazing oysters. Steak is good great service
Delicious food and great staff!
My friends and I had a wonderful experience dining here! They were able to fit us in even though it was a busy evening. At first hostess said we could only have the table for 90 minutes, but then she went out of her way to get us a different table that we could have for 2 hours! I thought that was so thoughtful of her to go out of her way. We all ordered seafood dishes and they were so delicious! I’d definitely eat here again!
Refreshing - great service
Went to the bar since there were seats and we did not have reservations after the Mooring. It was refreshing and the service was spot on! Had a bite there and was so much better than where we were previously. Hope to go back soon!

THIS WAS so much fun!! The food, the service, the atmosphere and overall experience was just what we were looking for while searching for a place to eat on the wharf. The oysters were FRESH and delicious. Everything we had to eat for dinner was just as fresh and delish!! The waitress was so nice and came around to check on us just the right amount of time. I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Located in the perfect spot along the waterfront near tons
Located in the perfect spot along the waterfront near tons of boutiques & shops, this historic restaurant had a lot of great options. The place is very busy & lively. We started off with the clam chowder which unfortunately was a bit runny/watery. The pastas sauce was similar and sunk below all the pasta. However the sushi, sea bass, and lobster rolls my family ordered were all top notch. The snowball from hell dessert was terrific offering a chocolate covered glass and chocolate cake/vanilla ice cream stuffed inside. One of the best desserts Ive ever come across.
My family and I enjoyed dining at the Clarke Cooke House.
It's a very lively atmosphere with lots of personality. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs. I would recommend ordering seafood because those dishes packed a lot of flavor. I loved my lobster roll; it was a perfect size. The sea bass special was very tasty. The popular snowball in hell dessert was a hit packed with lots of chocolate and coconut, you can't go wrong. Definitely worth a visit!

If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies you will recieve minimal or no accommodation. Add in the indifferent wait staff, on the 3rd floor's so called Sky Porch "elegant" jacket required dining area, the frankly average uninspired food that was served luke warm, the raucous, crowded, noisy, bar room atmosphere, offered up an experience that was mediocre at best....the aptly named "snowball in hell" desert was the best part of the meal but the "cappuccino" that accompanied it was possibly the worst I've ever been served....

We came to Newport to celebrate my birthday, and I HAD to come to Clarke Cooke house as I had the most phenomenal lobster roll the last time I came. Hot take, but I prefer a cold roll over a hot one. I knew I wanted to come here when we were planning. We ordered 3 different kinds of oysters, the majority of us got lobster rolls, my mom got a steak, and my sister got fries and a Caesar salad. Our server was super nice and we had an amazing time. Can't wait to come back again!
Worst customer service experience I've ever had.
The food is ok but all 6+ interactions at 3 different host stands on different floors were disrespectful, demeaning, and rude. Waitress was fine but not friendly by any means and my party of 3 felt immensely discriminated against at this weak excuse of an establishment. Will not be returning or spending another dime here. Might I also add, we were the only table on the entire floor not given bread to start. Sigh
A must visit restaurant for any stay in Newport! Great food
A must visit restaurant for any stay in Newport! Great food and service. Highly recommend the oyster selections and lobster roll. The hostess was awesome - she was able to snag us a table by the water. There was piano music playing during our visit and the restaurant was such a wonderful vibe.
Excellent meal. A bit crowded. Wonderful service.
Enjoyed our meal at this amazing venue. The steak was prepared perfectly and the drinks were delicious. Dress code with required jackets for men. Tables are a bit close but workable.
Mixed feeling about the Clarke Cooke house, food was tasty
Mixed feeling about the Clarke Cooke house, food was tasty 7/10, very common fair and nothing to really write home about. The dinning room is crowded, the servers and staff were friendly and personable but overall service was very slow (Drinks took 15 minutes, 2 Sandwiches smoked ham and smoked salmon took about 25-30 minutes). If it wasn't crowded, and you don't one paying a premium for "touristy" style dining it's passable, but there are better options.
A Modern Newport Classic
The Porch at Clarkes is a dreamy setting on a pleasant night in June. This is old school Newport with great modern food. There is a dress code required and this makes sense for such a lovely place. Started with a glass of champagne at the SkyBar where bartender Peter serves good conversation along with his drinks. The third floor dining Porch has a nice view of boats resting in the harbor. Sommelier Michael helped us pair a beautiful Bordeaux with our meal. Food arrived quickly. Super presentation and flavors. Manager Stefan commands this bustling establishment with great charm. All in all a very special evening.
Excellent dinner in a casual atmosphere
We recently spend a long weekend in Newport and had dinner at Clarke Cook House. Since it was March it was a casual atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Great food and our server was great, too. There were many great options on the menu so it was hard to choose but everyone was really happy with what they did choose. We had just gotten into town so we were tired but this hit the spot. Highly recommend if you are in Newport.
Yummy food, preppy vibe.
Went for St. Patty's Day lunch. They have raw bar, great drinks, large food menu. Had a few appetizers and drinks. Clam chowder was lighter than most..it was a refreshing change. Didn't get to try the famous Snowball in hell dessert. I can see this place getting super busy so try to get reservation ahead if you can. Small bar seating area.
Thursday night dinner for two ...
My date and I enjoyed a chilly Thursday evening meal in the upper lounge area. He enjoyed a nice glass of Bourbon. I enjoyed a delicious California Chardonnay. They served fresh warm rolls with scrumptious whipped butter. We both enjoyed the Black Sea Bass special. We were both very impressed with the flavor and creativity of our dishes which were perfectly cooked. The service was good but cold. The atmosphere was upscale nautical. The fireplace was a great touch and made for a very cozy evening.
Excellent food, especially the seafood.
Friendly service and a great atmosphere with varied locations inside.
Arugula salad was delicious.
Fireplace was cozy. Steve the bartender was the best part of the evening. So incredibly attentive and talented mixologist.
Great food, service, ambiance! A warm friendly atmosphere
Great food, service, ambiance! A warm friendly atmosphere with excellent service and superb food.
Another great meal
Once again, Clarke Cooke House did not disappoint. Eating delicious food in front of a fire on a cold winter night - just perfect. Bruce was our server - try to have him as a server, if you can. This is my favorite place to eat in Newport. Hands down!
We had a girls dinner planned and were so excited to eat
We had a girls dinner planned and were so excited to eat here. Huge disappointment. Do not recommend. Muscles - smelled and tasted like human feces Steak frites - frozen fries, chewy steak Jamón - I don't even want to talk about it

When we entered they offered to check my wife's coat and mine, so we handed them over. When I tried to get them back the man asked for $4. I explained that I had not known that I would be charged, and he insisted and pointed to a small sign which had not been within my line of sight, stating the fee. I then tried to pay but he did not accept card payment and demanded cash. Without my winter coat, he directed me to an outside ATM to get cash. Keep in mind, this was after I had already tipped the server well on our expensive meal.

Need to update my review! We ate here again and you need to try the snowball/ amazing chocolate dessert with cake ice cream and toasted coconut YUM!

We chose the CCH for a special occasion and it was a beautiful evening with outstanding food. We sat at the bar, as did not have ressies. Beware of the drink specials list. There are no prices. The "Newport Water" was $30. Yes, not a typo...$30...foolishly I had 2. It was basically a Prosecco fizz. Cost us $60.
My visit to this restaurant was a complete disaster.
The service was terrible, employees and management were shockingly rude, and the prices were way too high for what felt like a tourist trap. Adding insult to injury, the food was simply awful. The dining areas were loud and dirty, creating an overall unpleasant experience. Definitely not worth a visit.
My wife and I went to Clarke Cooke House this past week on
My wife and I went to Clarke Cooke House this past week on a trip to Newport. First, the building and dining room were awesome (we got to sit next to the fire, which we recommend); this is the quintessential Newport eatery. I started with a local beer, which was good. The bread they brought out was warm, fresh, and delicious. My wife and I both went with the steamed lobster and it was also delicious. We capped the meal off with the Snowball in Hell; it was so good we went back the next night to get the dessert but the restaurant was packed and we couldn't get a table. This place really made us feel like we were getting the Newport experience. Bathrooms were really small, but clean. Side note: Really surprised about the current yelp rating; give this place a try!
Great restaurant and atmosphere
Restaurant busy with plenty of atmosphere. All the food was very well cooked and nice and fresh. We ate lobster and steak, both of which were lovely
One of my fav spots in Newport
The Clarke Cooke House is one of my favorite places in Newport and I consider myself a vacation "regular". If you time it right you can always find a space at the bar and the food and service will not disappoint. As far as I'm concerned this is the best lobster roll in Newport. The fresh tomato salad, the chowda and the gazpacho are great too and as far as cocktails are concerned you can't beat a Newport Water! The service and food have remained consistent over the many years they've been open.
Callie was excellent and shrimp crisp
Had a very nice lunch of course clam chowder with a thinner broth but quite tasty. Kathy did not like the Brussels sprouts. Instead changed to a Caesar salad which was good. I had some shrimp and a lobster tail Callie was excellent in her service She was on top of everything
Extremely Unprofessional Establishment
Extremely unprofessional establishment. My wife had done a lot of research on restaurants in the Newport area and made a reservation online a month before our arrival. She requested a high chair in the online reservation for our young son. We arrived early to our reservation and we were informed that they don’t have high chairs. After speaking with the manager, she stated that they have high chairs but they don’t use them for dinner. When I asked why they don’t publish this information on their website, she stated “we wouldn’t want to broadcast something that could be perceived as negative.” Cannot make this up. The Black Pearl next door is much more friendly and accommodating.
Not good
We ordered a tuna ceviche which was definitely not a ceviche, 4 slices of tuna fish with onion on the top and a drop of smashed avocado, no leche de Tigre… didn’t even look like a ceviche. We also ordered calamari which were over toasted, dry and even a few calipers where burnt.
Newport Food at it’s BEST!!!
Service Food and Ambience were superb! Their Strip Steak was wonderful and my wife’s Lobster Salad Roll was beyond compare! The Chocolate Moose Cake finished it off fantastically!
Some of the best service we have ever had!
I am writing this review because of the service provided by Duane B. He is probably one of the most professional servers I have ever encountered and we eat out seven nights a week. Nothing was too much trouble for him and his service was seamless. This gentleman is an asset to this restaurant and to the hospitality industry in which he has chosen to work!
Too bad
I do not recommend. Bad management, bad service, mediocre food. Great Location. Very crowded inside. Angry French manager does not treat his customers nicely.
Patrick and patrick
Patrick and Patrick were phenomenal! Service was excellent overall and the food was fantastic, the filet was incredible and the steak frites were great! Can’t wait to come back!

Customer service, food, atmosphere and waitstaff are consistently outstanding! Wonderful place to go and enjoy terrific plates! The Sunday Brunch is also very good. BTW: the piano player isn't so bad either! : )Come & enjoy Clarke Cooke! You won't be disappointed!
Beyond outstanding! Best meal we've had in a very long time.
Can't wait to return! Service: excellent across the board. Before the restaurant opened, we were waiting outside on the wharf and the host was outside in his suit and tie cleaning the alley entrance - attention to detail! The raw bar guy was super friendly and helpful for picking out oysters to our liking (perfect choices for us!). The waiter was perfect and I'm sad I can't remember his name - he had only been there about 6 months but he knew exactly how to make it a perfect date night for us. Just the right amount of attention and excellent menu knowledge and recommendations. We will look for him whenever we go back.Ambiance: comfortably upscale. Not too dressy but you would feel comfortable if you were dressed up. A bit noisy but it was Valentines Day.Food: Began with oysters and shrimp from the raw bar. Meaty and fresh. Shared a crisp side salad with my husband. I had the rack of lamb special and my husband had the half chicken. The chicken skin was perfectly seasoned with a nice crispness and the chicken was cooked perfectly juicy and so flavorful. Mashed potatoes and spinach were great accompaniments. The lamb was also cooked perfectly with lots of lovely tender meat, just the right seasoning. It came with something with mushrooms which the chef easily switched to spinach at my request. No fuss made at all. It also came with a grain and some kind of shoestring squash that was delicious. We then got 2 desserts, a rarity for us, because we couldn't decide-they all sounded amazing. Well, the caramelized orange tart (special) was like nothing we have ever had and it was ahhmazing! I want some right now just thinking about it. The crust was melt in your mouth flaky. The orange was bright, not acidic, just the right amount of sweetness. Our waiter said it was new, the chef had just returned from Paris. The second dessert was called Snowball in Hell and it was pure Heaven. High quality chocolate and chocolate fudge sauce used - you could tell they didn't skimp with the quality or the generous serving. It was a goblet coated in chocolate, filled with moist rich chocolate cake and homemade vanilla ice cream and more sauce and toasted coconut and chocolate chips. It was superb. Price: spot on! Not an every night place but certainly a bit more vista than just special occasions. We will be back!Sorry for the photo quality-it was pretty dark at our table.
Service was not great.
Waiter messed up the order and we wait well over 30 minutes for food. Waiter forgot we ordered crab cake and forgot how we ordered our food. Burgers were not cooked up to par. Heavy poor on alcohol drinks. There's a reason we didn't need to wait.
Wonderful food and service! Oddly limited Brunch men.
Came to Newport for Sunday Brunch on a cold winter day. Not too crowded, and a very nice atmosphere. Great piano player! The food we ordered was wonderful. The only strange thing was that of 11 items on the brunch menu, 9 of them featured poached eggs. I'm not a fan of poached eggs, no matter how elegantly they are prepared. .....Fortunately, the lunch menu was also available, and I was able to order a delightful salmon special.

If Rachel is you're server, you're set! One of the nicest and most hospitable servers I've had in my life. She's a gem!
Haven't the foggiest clue how this place isn't rated higher.
Cleary its not adversely affecting the business, judging on how mobbed it is every single time I try to go here. The oyster lists and fresh offerings, like the stone crab, are next to none; they even have oysters from New Brunswick that have become my new favorite. Their chowder is excellent. And I'd suggest ordering anything that's a special here, as its truly fresh and inspired. Pro tip - the bar has one of the best espresso martinis in New England.
We had filet mignon, king salmon, lamb-duck-sausage
We had filet mignon, king salmon, lamb-duck-sausage cassoulet, rare tuna, and duck -- all fabulous. Great taste. Very good wine list. Barrolo was terrific. Service was excellent and good humored. Great evening out.

Great place on the water for a few night caps and a little music. Great service and staff. Hope to get back for dinner
My family and I sat at the bar and Steve the bartender
My family and I sat at the bar and Steve the bartender count not be more attentive. He shared the history for the restaurant, his passion for hospitality, and made us feel at home. Him alone will make us all want to come back. Food and drinks were delicious along with the cool atmosphere.
When we arrived at this restaurant, I could not believe how
When we arrived at this restaurant, I could not believe how cold and rude the "welcome" was at this restaurant. After scanning the other reviews that some diners have experienced at this restaurant (from hair in the food...to mice...to a mean GM), we lucked out by going to 22-Bowens. Skip this place unless you enjoy overpaying for poor food and a staff with an attitude.
Since 1780
Stopped by the candy store an Irish coffee on a cold winter day. Bartender explained to me that the place was a candy store until the 1960s. Seafood looked great but didn’t eat anything. Would go back and get a snowball in hell next time.
Can’t beat it!
There isn’t a better restaurant in Newport. Three great bars, different food options, amazing waitstaff every time. The Boom Boom Room is a must while in Newport.
GOOD chowder
Always have a great chowder when I eat there. This place is much better than the black pearl down aways where it smells like a sewer treatment facility.
Our favorite place in Newport.
The Cooke house is Newport. Great food but really go for the vibe, location, views.
