We wanted to support Asian chefs and loved the idea of asian flavors being incorporated into high end food. I had such high expectations given that this is a two Michelin starred fine dining establishment. And I'm having so many mixed feelings about it. I spent over $650 and truthfully, I appreciate the effort behind the scene but I don't think it's worth it.. Service: all the staffs were very welcoming and attentive. Although the main male staff who helped my table seemed a little condescending. When I would ask a question, he answered it in a rushed way and it felt like I bothered him. At one point, I saw another staff's friendliness and wished that we were his table instead. They sat us next to each other and when they brought out our courses, only one of us can hear the explanation at a time. So half the time, I couldn't really understand what I was supposed to be tasting. Interior: Very comfortable seats and the lighting is excellent to take picture of the food. Our table faced a wall and we were sat next to each other. It was a little weird to look up and see a wall constantly. Thankfully my partner and I can keep a conversation with each other. Food: First, let me start off by acknowledging that I am just a person who likes to try new food and appreciate flavor combinations. I'm sure this place was awarded Michelin stars for many reasons. My partner and I are huge foodies and we always embrace various ingredients and flavors. The Kusshi oyster was refreshing and loved the texture. The shiso leaf bite was a bit off putting because the size of the leaf overpowered all the other finer details. The Dungeness crab tasted really fresh and it was well rounded. Same with the beetroot. Great quality caviar. Poached egg yolk dish provided a sense of familiarity. Monkfish dish was a no go for me. I didn't even finish the bite. Personally I think the glaze is too strong for the small piece of fish. The pork dish felt like a fancy lunchable, the taro and the tamarind sauce was a great addition though. Scallion rice was fragrant and nicely paired with the broth, I think hydrated mushroom might be better than the dried ones. Maybe it could've added more umami with hydrated ones. Oh, the bread was so good and the butter was great. For the pain perdu dessert, I was so disappointed. They shared that they used durian in the cream and I got excited to know that a chef is finally embracing that flavor in this country. And yes I do taste it but the passionfruit over killed the delicate flavors. It almost felt like they were trying to be brave and wow the guest. But got scared of the potential backlash from using this fruit, so they covered it with passionfruit. Oh, and the sauce underneath the toast is a passionfruit caramel. So the double passionfruit created such a tang that I couldn't appreciate the toast and the durian cream. From the last set of dessert bites, the biko was my favorite. Cocktail: I appreciate the complexity and the depth. It was an experience. Overall, both of us left feeling like we could've spent this money on a different experience/another Michelin restaurant. But we still appreciate the meal and the precision that went into each course. For us, the courses clashed at certain moments. There were high and lows. Or maybe our server just contributed negatively into our experience as well. From reading the other reviews, maybe we should have just went with the bar menu.
