Fine food with friends
My exceedingly better half and I went with friends to Cucina Sorella before the Randi Driscoll Jingle Bells Ball at the Normal Heights United Church on Friday 12/2/22. The food was delicious. My wife and I had the Rigatoni Bolognese, a perfectly cooked al dente pasta and an exceptional blend of veal, pork and ricotta. We split the Chopped Italian Salad. Our friends ordered the Shrimp and Angel Hair pasta and the Short Rib Papparedelle. We shared a nice bottle of, reasonably priced Red Blend. I enthusiastically reccommend this restaurant.

My son and his girlfriend had dinned at Cucina Sorella and raved about it so for my birthday it was the place to go and Cucina Sorella did not disappoint We arrived at 7:30PM on a Thursday evening for our reservation and because I forgot to request out door seating we had a little wait before a table opened up (there was plenty of seating inside). Once seated we experienced the only hiccup in that it took about 10 minutes for a server to come by and greet us and take a drink/appetizer order. We all attributed it to the industry wide staff shortage as we noticed only 2 or 3 servers for the entire restaurant. Since it was a Thursday night we lucked into all day Happy Hour and being seating in the patio area it was available to order and we took advantage. We ordered the Burnt Brussels sprouts and the Meatball with Polenta from the Happy hour menu as well as the Squash Blossom from the regular menu. Each item was excellent with the Burnt Brussels sprouts the best of that type I have had. The Polenta with the meatball was so creamy that at first I thought it was a burrata or something similar. As for the Squash Blossoms, well just order them and enjoy! For our mains I had the Short Rib Pappardelle, other selections were the Bucatini Amatricana and the Rigatoni Bolognese. My Short Rib was fantastic, full of flavor and the pasta done perfectly with just the right amount of “bite”. I did get to taste the bucatini the next day (my wife’s leftovers) and man was that good too. We had the Tiramisu for desert and that in my opinion was the only flaw in a perfect dinner. It was made in a cup and though it was good, it was not like the layered Tiramisu I am used to eating (if you are ever in Boston go to Anico Forno or the sister restaurant Terramia in the North End for an amazing Tiramisu). Our service improved after the initial delay in coming to our table so overall it was very good. For sure this is a restaurant I will be returning to when I come down to San Diego from Orange County CA.
Be the first to ReplySister Restaurant of Cucina Urbana. Excellent & Cozy Ambiance.
Visited three times. One for dinner with a large group, another alone with hubby & the last one sat at the bar for Happy Hour. Every time I have been there, the service has been great & food excellent. For Happy Hour tried the deep dish pizza & a great wine my bar neighbor recommended. Small place so the feel is cozier than at Cucina Urbana.

Came here to celebrate our 25th year anniversary. First off, the young lady behind the bar came over to the table to greet us. She was very nice, and added two glasses of bubbly to the table. Nice touch. She then went through some of the menu items, and answered everything very well. The Pasta here is ridiculously good. The deep dish was pretty good, sausage one, had better...but still good. Next time will try the chicken. Cesar salad was good also. Desert pudding salted caramel good also. Overall, this place was what I expected, and more. We will be back, probably a little later, we had early dinner 5 pm...was quite. The decor, and bar looks great. A nice addition to Kensington.

I met a friend there last night and enjoyed the atmosphere, service and food we ordered. I am looking forward to returning and trying other menu items.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place!
I started of with the GRILLED SICILIAN MEATBALLS, then I had the PORCINI RUBBED WAGYU SKIRT STEAK. Both dishes were very good. Great atmosphere and great team working. I've been twice and will return.

We had a great dinner in a lovely place. I’m going back! Such a great meal. I had the chicken with polenta and broccoli. I do not remember what my friend had.

My son whom lives in SD took me there for dinner as a suggestion. We sat outside and it was delightful. Super friendly and attentive waitress, but more importantly the food is great. We had dinners of fish, pasta, dessert. All was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Price seems to be a bit on the high side

Dinner with my husband tonight! Chef Rowan(not sure I spelled his name right?) adds a breath of fresh air to Cucina Sorella!!! Dinners here are always amazing but it was awesome to have 2 specials on the menu tonight to mix it up... looking forward to what he has in store for the restaurant and very happy to have a full time chef assigned to the restaurant... great addition and shout out to Gracie and Kevin who take impeccable care of us always!!! Thanks Tracy, Chef Daniel and Chef Mark for bringing in such talent! Yummy!!!!

One of the pleasures of moving to a new neighborhood in a tourist city is discovering the local gems that you can walk to enjoy - Cucina Sorella did not disappoint among a number of good restaurants on the main drag in Kensington (a cul de sac neighborhood, so you really have to go there with a reason). The service was friendly and courteous and left one enough time to really enjoy each course without dragging - the manager stopped by the table during the evening to make sure! And the food is some of the best and most innovative we've seen outside of Italy - the burrata and heirloom tomatoes was a surprisingly complex salad with a fairly complex, layered flavor profile. I have never seen garganelli on an American menu, and this freshly made pasta (with seafood and another delicious, complex sauce) was extraordinary. My husband's pan seared gnocchi (a preparation I have not seen in the past) were tender and delicious and had just a hint of truffle. Deserts were also worth the wait. If you've never been to Kensington, come and walk around to see the fabulous old houses and then stop on Adams for a really relaxing and delicious dinner here.

Noisy - but where isn't these days? Slow and inattentive service but it was busy (a Friday night) Seemingly un-exciting menu choices but, at the end of the meal we had eaten enough and enjoyed most of it. What was very good and tasty? The starter jar of pumpkin, goat cheese and zatar; the pesto/piquillo flatbread; the ricotta fried squash blossom. What was average - grilled Sicilian meatballs; garganelli pasta with crab, shrimp, tomato sauce - the sauce was quite good but the large pasta pieces didn't do the sauce any favors; the octopus a la plancha. Why is it restaurants charge the earth for octopus that is very inexpensive and very easily prepared if a few simple rules are followed - the $14 charge for a tentacle and a half. You can buy a pound of octopus for less that $14. This one was also slightly chewy - a no-no. Also bizarre behavior on paying - waiter brought credit card slips which we signed, then he came to take them away as there was a slight problem with them - a slight overcharge because of a mix-up. He then returned with a new slip for us to sign without bringing back the old ones. The amount was precisely the same as on the one he'd taken - needless to say we did not sign again. Strange or what?
