Every time I've gone it has been wonderful! I've been working my way up to the JLC Seafood tower by eating it all individually! Oysters were on point. Crab cake fantastic, Yellow Tail to die for... those roles. wonderful, wonderful. Both times I took friends who were fantastically impressed and I can't wait for the next opportunity! TEN stars!

This was such a wonderful restaurant! The food was delicious, I had the shrimp Louie salad, which was amazing (just order it with half the portion of the dressing), Dungeness crab cake was perfectly crafted, and the oysters were fresh and amazing. The service was outstanding, very courteous and polite servers! The ambiance was super cool, low noise level perfect restaurant for a business dinner/meeting. After dinner you can grab a drink a the bar where you can meet really interesting people.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a tough review.
I think this place has the best Shrimp Scampi in LA; that's my go-to when I go there. Unfortunately, the last time we went I got the Surf and Turf, and I thought of the Escargot style mushrooms would really compliment that. The Filet was good. The stuffed prawn delmonico was meh. But the mushrooms were the true bummer. There was nothing escargot style about them. They were just cooked mushrooms, with no hint of any garlic butter. Total letdown. But I would definitely recommend the Shrimp Scampi

The opening of Dear Jane's has been highly anticipated in MDR, but sadly it was a bit of a disappointment. The interior has a cool vibe with the wall of buoys, the cozy bar and cool view. When we got there, the glazed over staff at the front told us to follow the hostess. She walks a few yards and stops abruptly, saying nothing. We literally had to ask the robot if this was our table. She curtly said yes. Clearly no training. The waiter was sweet and friendly but also seemed inexperienced with working in a restaurant. The food was very tasty however the presentation was lacking. No garnish or dipping sauce, just the entree on a bare plate. The restaurant was so dangerously dark we were hardly surprised to witness a woman fall down the lower level stairs that had no LED strip lights. The busboys also tried to grab food that wasn't finished which is the most annoying thing in any restaurant. Hopefully they've ironed out these problems since we visited last as the restaurant has potential.

Well, that was an experience! The theme and decor at this little gem of a fine dining seafood establishment are done to the nines. Retro and nautical, with big booths and intimate tables, most facing the floor to ceiling glass windows that overlook the beautiful Marina harbor. Details, such as the floor that looks like a beautiful ship deck, make all the difference. Speakeasy bar may appeal to some, but a little dark for our tastes. Only room for improvement here were the restrooms. Elevated medical office standard, they must have run out of budget when they got to this part of the decor. However, it's mostly about the food and the food overall is fabulous. The starter of sourdough bread and butter is a must. We balked at the price, but honestly it was the best bread we have had in many, many years. Of course - Mr. Rockenwagner. They oysters on the half shell were surprisingly forgettable, a somewhat unforgivable mistake for a high-end seafood restaurant - bland, boring, blah. But after that, everything just got better and better, from the crab claw appetizer to the epic entrees: fish and chips, wagyu steak with both peppercorn and bernaise sauces on the side, surf and turf and the BEST SAND DABS EVER CREATED. I kid you not, you should go, GO NOW for the sand dabs. (Small aside - you can skip the creamed spinach and the extra fries, not necessary and not epic).Service was a little mixed. Entry was friendly, as in SUPER. Bussers, expediters, everyone was also friendly and attentive ... except our waiter. I would describe him as FLAT. As in neither here nor there, friendly nor unfriendly, pretty forgettable, monotone, NADA. Didn't really affect us but didn't add anything either, though there weren't any mistakes or problems to point out. Just NOTHING.Overall a stellar dinner for a special occasion. Greatly appreciate the attention to giving us a special booth that I requested (no promises!) in the reservation. A good time was had by all. Highly recommend.A note. I don't usually comment on other reviews. But in scanning before we went, it was noticeable how some gave this establishment a ONE* review because they actually charged them the deposit for a no show - that the reviewer had agreed to ahead of time but just didn't like. UMMM ... in my book that's pretty unfair, but .... just my OP.

We loved what we ordered - particularly the tuna, wedge salad and crab cake. We had an 8pm reservation and were seated immediately by the window. The space is beautiful too.

The food in the service was really good! We really had a great night. Went a little bit earlier to have a drink in the bar, but it was way to pack to even get seated, that was kind of a bummer. But all in all it was a great meal and atmosphere.

I was really surprised this establishment didn't have more 5 stars. We had an INCREDIBLE experience, hands down one of the best meals ever. Our server Ryan was extremely attentive, knowledgeable and helpful with his menu recommendations. The staff made sure to make us feel welcomed and always came by to clear our plates and table appropriately. We got the tuna tartare (prepared table side), crab cakes, surf and turf, and the wagyu. We ended with a banana crepe with ice cream desert. We got wine, martinis and tea. This combination of food was perfect and we spent around 155 each. Totally worth it!!

I never had the opportunity to eat at Dear Jane's because members of my group were sick, and I never will. When I called the restaurant the night before my reservation to cancel, I was told that I missed the 24-hour cancellation deadline and would be charged $100 to cancel the reservation ($25 per person). I asked to speak to the manager and was told the manger could not and does not come to the phone. I was told to email which I did immediately. My reservation was Saturday at 7:45pm and I called the restaurant at 9:00pm. When I did not receive a response by email or a phone call from the manager, I called the restaurant again on Saturday afternoon. I was again told that the manager was not available. I left a message with the host and expected a call back. Instead of a call back, my reservation was cancelled by the restaurant and I was charged $100. I sent a second email and still have not heard back. After the last three years, I am baffled that a restaurant would encourage guests to dine while experiencing respiratory symptoms that were soon after diagnosed as Covid-19. What's more, is that if the restaurant had allowed me to cancel the reservation when I called on Friday night, they would have surely filled the reservation. Instead, they charged me $100 and still filled the reservation. I am horrified by this experience and will tell everyone I know to avoid Dear Jane's and Dear John's.
