I'll start with Departure's good qualities.
I really enjoyed the drink selection and the view of the city from the rooftop bar. Definitely a great spot to take photos and enjoy a beautiful view with a drink in hand. However, I was pretty disappointed with the restaurant. Although the service was quick, the food was less than satisfactory for the price I paid. Most of what you are paying for is definitely the views. The servings are not generous and the vibe of the restaurant is fairly pretentious. There are much better restaurants in town for cheaper.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great service.
We celebrated a birthday here and the staff definitely helped make it special. Friendly, attentive, and helpful. Food was really good and fresh. Innovative and creative ways of serving scrumptious foods.

Very very swanky place! Made a reservation here for an anniversary celebration and we were definitely in awe as we walked in. The restaurant is drop dead gorgeous. Views from there are amazing! Our table was ok - I myself am not a fan of tables right in the middle of everything. I wish I had requested a more intimate booth but not complaining much because we could see the mountains from where we were at. Wish we had a table closer to the view though. It was probably a mistake on my part for not emphasizing a more intimate table since this was for our anniversary. Now for the food. Husband rated his Departure experience a 5/5. Being omni, he had more options to choose from. He had the sashimi which he said melted in the mouth. The octopus was delectable and the trout entree was lovely from what I hear. He absolutely loved his meal and had no complaints. I being vegetarian had fewer options to choose from. I liked that for the appetizer and dim sum, there were at least two but the entree only had the one. I would request the talented folks at Departure to think of a second veggie entree if possible for the experience? The Burmese salad was everything I've ever wanted in a salad and more. It put every single salad I've had so far to shame. I could have eaten a vat of that. For the dim sum, I chose the veggie steam bun. That was a disappointment. The bun was off - the tempeh was not flavored and the pineapple did not go well with it. I wish I had got the carrots instead! Entree was obviously the squash noodles. They were just ok - the flavor was way too overpowering (exact opposite problem from the steam buns). It badly needed more fresh components and was a little too greasy. When I took a bite with the citrus, it tasted better - but this dish needs twenty percent more freshness. I rated my food a 3/5. We got some NA drinks - their mocktail menu definitely needs work! We've been to many other places with a killer NA game -so the menu is a little lacking here. Still grateful that they had some options at least. The service was okay and the timing of the dishes was fast-paced (not necessarily a bad thing). I guess I really did not enjoy having a table in the middle of everything and for that reason, I would rate the vibe 3.5/5. Considering they do ask for occasion in the reservation details, maybe reserve a slightly more intimate table when it's an anniversary/date night celebration? Again perhaps had I provided that feedback, we could have got a nicer table. Would we come here again? Perhaps on occasion. Would definitely not do the experience again since their veg dishes need work. Perhaps the regular menu has better options for vegetarians/vegans.

After a long day driving to the coast this was super convenient to not have to make another stop. Loved my drink and steak entree. I sat at the bar and had great service. It's definitely worth checking out. The design is beautiful and interesting. There's a good variety on the menu. Good city views in the dining area and wasn't too loud on a week night.
Be the first to ReplyDeparture is an affordable fine dining in downtown.
You can order a La carte or the "experience for $55" My table ordered a bunch of shareable plates while I am vegetarian I ordered the Tempeh Buns and Dan Dan Noodles. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the food I got. The noodles tasted like spicy ramen. Everyone else enjoyed the meat a la carte items which is why I would happily recommend to others! Janet was our server and she handled our table so well. I had a few rowdy guys and she was 10/10. Overall well run establishment!

I had a lovely experience dining with both Krista and Eli tonight. As a Diamond member this was an incredible evening at Departure. Looking forward to my next visit. Food was tasty but the service was phenomenal. They both are great assets to your company. Please please take care of the amazing people who have been so welcoming to a new city for me. Because of Krista and Eli, I am looking forward to continuing my partnership with the Marriott team and the amazing customer service experience.
Be the first to ReplyOur son's birthday was upon us.
He had dined at Departure once previously, so suggested our family celebrate his 24th birthday there. I was curious, given the widely disparate reviews on Yelp. Well, we just returned home and were not disappointed in the least. Our party of six was well-cared for by server Jesse. We opted to order family-style from the Arrival menu, and share items. Pork belly, Wagyu beef steak buns, pork belly and kimchi fried rice, spicy tuna roll, salmon roll... all delicious, with hot tea, Kirin lager and Yo-Ho porter beers as beverages. Topped off by a decadent chocolate truffle log with a candle and birthday wishes. Cost was quite reasonable, and no one left hungry. We will be back.

I decided this was the year I'd challenge myself and try more new (to me) restaurants and I'm so happy I started with Departure. They're located just a few steps from Pioneer Square in the Nines hotel. I've walked by so many times and never knew there was a gem waiting to be found on the fifteenth floor. I was greeted with a warm welcoming smile at the entrance and as I was shown to my table I encountered an amazing view of downtown Portland. The city really shines at night. I started with tuna and salmon poke sushi and a 75-ish, a light sparkling lychee flavored drink. The sushi had me feeling so elated after each bite, I seriously thought of just ordering only sushi for dinner but I wanted to try an entree this visit. I ordered the lemongrass chicken katsu which had the best coconut curry I've tasted in a long time. The chicken was crisp with very tender center. Overall I was very pleased with my visit.
Be the first to ReplyThe open-seating bar/lounge is great.
Nice views, comfortable seating, gas fires and heaters, and decent prices on drinks. Clean and classy place. Can't believe this is like one of the only places you can go have a drink up high in a major city. Only downside is the line gets long/slow. Only one small bar counter, so don't go if you're pressed for time. Haven't been to the restaurant inside, but looks swanky. Good date/celebration spot.
Be the first to ReplyEverything was sooooo wonderful.
From the views to the dining space to the foood itself, this place was worth the price point. My buddy and I are trying to support all these mom and pop restaurants in Portland and Departure was one of the best. We tried a smattering of things: beet salad was the best I've had anywhere, so was the tom kha soup, wagyu sliders, salmon sashimi and entree, scallops, there was nothing mediocre here. Can't wait to go back! The only drawback was not their fault, it was 9pm and there was a screaming baby nearby, le sigh. I know this is harsh but when you spend a lot of hard earned cash, you kinda want a zen dining experience too. Again, not their fault but it did put a damper on everyone's meal.

Good view and nice ambiance, food wasn't worth the price and service was slow. Went here for a date night and planned way ahead but still got stuck in a back corner.
Be the first to ReplyGood food and good vibe.
Modern, trendy restaurant with a full bar. This is part of the hotel in downtown Portland. We had the seasonal menu with the peking duck, with the chef's own twist.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful multi course dining experience.
Not all dishes were a hit, but did enjoy most. Bao slider was the perfect pillowy texture and slight chew you want in a bun. Filling was a super yummy tamarind meatball. Family enjoyed the Wagu beef cooked on a hot stone. Drinks were pricey.

I've been here a few times a long time ago but decided to participate in their annual "Peking Duck experience." I believe it was $80/person for a 4 course meal. Each plate had something duck related. Overall I thought it was an interesting experience but I wouldn't try it again. You do get a whole roasted duck split with you and your partner and the duck was very tender. Wasn't a fan of the winter salad but the duck broth was very rich in flavor. The ice cream featuring duck fat I thought was delicious as well.
Be the first to ReplyOn top of the NINES hotel.
Nice view of the city, if you like it. Food has Asian fusion, the sakes were really good. It is a bar sense, so a bit on the noisy side.

I would recommend coming here for drinks and that's about it. The atmosphere is really cool and the drinks are great. Everything else was pretty forgettable.

The service was great and there was really nothing wrong with the way the food tasted. I'm giving this place two stars because it's a pointless restaurant. It's way over priced for no reason. Sure the view is great but I could have gone to Portland city grill and gotten a fabulous meal with a better view. Our table of four ordered the "experience " which is a three course meal. Like I said, nothing was wrong with the food but it wasn't special and it was pricey af. We all went home and pulled out leftovers from the fridge bc we were still hungry. I wish someone warned me that this was a place I didn't need to experience.

This restaurant has phenomenal service! They were overly accommodating for our large party, they were all so polite and helpful. Our server Jesse was absolutely wonderful, he was so nice and helped us celebrate our friend's birthday. The restaurant is so pretty and cool, we felt like celebrities. The food was yummy and unique and again they were so accommodating to our allergies and preferences. I would definitely recommend Departure to anyone looking to have an elegant evening.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has potential for ambiance.
I was excited to try because I just moved here from LA and it seemed to have a more upscale vibes versus a lot of other places in Portland (there's not many). First, the outdoor bar is nice and the bartenders were cool and the lemon drop I had was tasty. About an hour into our dinner, the electricity went off. It's on the rooftop so it did get fairly hot pretty quickly as it was 99 degrees yesterday. They kept the restaurant running and did not even offer to comp meals or anything based off of that experience which I didn't appreciate. We ordered the crab roll, steak skewers, asparagus and a mocktail. The food was about 6/10. It lacked flavor, the steak was dry, the sushi was bland and the asparagus was not hot when brought to our table. Overall I would meet someone there for a drink or to but I would not eat there again. Also, the waiter at the main bar kept my change and did not bring it back to the table assuming I was giving it all to him and I hate when they do that! It's rude!

We are visiting from San Francisco and I wanted to take my partner for a wonderful anniversary dinner, hearing good things about this rooftop restaurant .Firstly - great views & location BUT horrid service. Our server seemed very clumsy and wasn't very informative about the departure experience. We were asked numerous times if we were celebrating something and we answered- ANNIVERSARY !We selected the 4 course meal and chose a bottle of expensive wine. Our courses took a while to come out , we ignored that and just enjoyed wine & conversations. After what seemed like a 3.5 hour dinner we finally got the cheque BUT what surprised me was that while we were there , I noticed a tonne of folks celebrate birthdays & anniversaries with complimentary glasses of champagne or dessert. BUT we got NOTHING. Its not that we can't order a glass or bottle for ourselves after having dropped over $400 there for dinner , but its the thoughtfulness behind it.Don't ask us repeatedly if we are celebrating anything , shows us what you do with others celebrations around us and then when its out turn , just plant us with the check . I've been to many many fancy and high end restaurants and one thing that should always be a top notch quality should be customer service , which this place lacks.Would not recommend.

My daughter made reservations for 5:30 on a Sunday and asked for a table with a view and said we would like the Departure Experience, which is a pre-set special menu, $55 per person. We were excited because we had heard about the fantastic views from inside the restaurant as well as the roof top deck and the excellent food. When we arrived we were seated in an area by the bar which was very noisy and had three tables with screens at each end so you could not see the view. A group of 4 was seated at one of the tables and after 15 minutes they got up and left. We asked if we could be seated at one of the open tables by the window and were told that those were all reserved for reservations at 6:00. By the way when we left there were still open tables by the window. It took 20 minutes for a server to come by and longer to get our food. We were given the wrong menu and although the server did her best to please us buy this time we were not happy and wished we would not have chosen this restaurant. The food was good but we were expecting excellent food and service. I would not recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWe should have gone to the restaurant, we mistakenly went
We should have gone to the restaurant, we mistakenly went to the bar area, unfortunately it was before sunset on an extremely hot day, they offer no protection from the sun. For the owner I would highly suggest some sun shades, I understand that umbrellas might blow over up there but something! It makes the two cocktails and one appetizer we had pretty unbearable. Me and the drink melted immediately. I should have stayed at Tope, at least they have plants that are not burnt to a crisp to look at. This place was a barren with orange lounge chairs. The drinks were fine and the tuna role was unremarkable. Pretty basic, the same role is the "cheap" $8 role at any sushi joint yet this one was $20. Go to the restaurant and come here last for a drink at sunset. Good luck finding a spot!

Lovely atmosphere - almost unmatched! One of the only places in Portland that offers a rooftop experience- and perhaps the most beautiful and well done of them all. Food is excellent, and the service is always excellent as well. Vegan options! My only complaint would be getting a table :) not a bad problem.
