Dhaba India specializes in the food of south India. I don’t know anything about that kind of food, and the menu was quite lengthy. I solved the problem by ordering dishes that had been recommended by other reviewers. Thank you to those reviewers! I had a great dinner.
I had a half order of masala desa to start. That’s a crispy thin pancake or bread which was wrapped around flavored diced potatoes. I dipped it in the 2 sauces that came with it. Terrific. The sauce was medium hot.
My main course was Tamilian fish pulusa. In simpler words, it was a fish curry, with generous pieces of fish served in lots of red-colored tasty (very) hot sauce. On top of rice, which had to be ordered separately, it was wonderful.
The restaurant has beer and wine, but I chose lassi (no ice, please).
My bill for all that, including tax, was 3,030 yen. The amount of food was very satisfying. I wouldn’t have been able to eat another dish.
If you go with 2 or more people, I recommend ordering similarly to what I did: a half-order per person of the appetizers, one of the main dishes per person, and a half-order of rice per person, and then share. The restaurant also offers set menus. The ones I saw people eating had rice and three rather small bowls, each with a different food in it. The diners mixed everything together on top of the rice. I’m happier keeping the different flavors of each dish separate.
I had tried to make a reservation in advance through the Internet. It was difficult and then when I finally figured out how to place the reservation, I got back a reply that this restaurant accepts reservations only for 2 or more people, and I was going alone. It turned out that not having a reservation wasn’t a problem. The layout of the restaurant is very welcoming to singles. There is a long counter where it would be comfortable to sit by oneself. In my case, another woman and I arrived at the same time, each unaccompanied. We were seated at (separate) tables for 2, rather than at the counter.
I chose this restaurant partly because of the good reviews and partly because I wanted to go to the Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum, which is next door. The museum closes at 5 p.m., and the restaurant opens at 5 on Saturdays and Sundays. It made a very satisfying package. (See my review of the museum.)
At 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, there were 2 of us in line. By 5 p.m., there were eight. People with reservations are seated immediately. If you don’t make a reservation and have to wait in line, be warned that the line is outside. There are a few small stools available, but if there are more people than stools, the extras have to stand. Also, be aware of the weather when you’re planning to go to Dhaba India if you don’t have a reservation.
The restaurant is easy to find. Leave Kyobashi subway station by exit 8. Go straight ahead, and up the escalator. Across the street and to the left, you will see a 7-11. Dhaba India is to the left of the 7-11.
The restaurant is on the ground floor (sidewalk level).
