We have been to DINER 5 times over the years since it opened. 3 Years ago Dad had a series of mini strokes leaving him with memory problems and mobility issues. We wanted to return to DINER again, especially as Dad worked at the Hyde Park Hotel for many years in his early career, so a trip down memory lane. We booked for a friday afternoon in half term. the city was teeming with visitors and tourists so felt lucky to get a table in this 2 michelin starred restaurant. When we arrived the restaurant was empty with only 4 other tables being used. We were very surprised at it being empty. we ordered our favourite starter and it was as usual superb. Meat Fruit. An amazing dish that takes 3 days to make and is modestly priced at £26. Next we opened again for an old time favourite, the pork chop. This was sadly very disappointing. It has been changed from the usuall big fat pork chop with a bone and crispy rind, cooked on a searing hot grill, so a small piece of fatty pork that is cooked in what I imagine to be a sous vide way, as its very tender and pink (rare) and the fat is just white. the bone has gone, the accompanying vegetables have gone and it is served with a very tasty spelt side dish. This is £59. To add a few triple cooked chips is another £9, so for £68 you get a very underwhelming dish and it is hugely over priced and no where near the £68 price tag. There were 3 of us and we all had the same so nearly £220 for three main courses that were far worse than they used to be was a real negative for the event. Dessert was for me a Tipsy cake which as usual was superb and the others had a cheese cake, described as amazing the best cheesecake ever. Gone is a ganache in a tea cup and now replaced by a tiny tiny tartlet with a ganache in. We are not rich so an experience like this is saved for and knowing it would be expensive we had hoped it would have been better. we will not be back for a few reasons : 1. I looked through the wine list and found a bottle of red for £45. The wine waiter tried to upsell but I asked for a bottle of the cheapest red wine they had. I always do as i cannot tell the difference between the cheapest and a £100 bottle. When the bill came at the end the wine served was £59 and certainly more expensive than the £45 bottle I pointed out. They argued that the wine was what I said yes to when they brought it over.. 2. £70 for a plate of meat and a few veggies is a rip off, given it has changed from what it always was. If you changed the meat fruit completely but kept the name then there would be outrage. 3. I specifically asked that a booking near the end of service wouldn't mean we were rushed. This is a real let down as they stated sweeping the restaurat and cleaning up for the next service I guess.. The table was left covered in bread crumbs and a dirty plate for far longer than would have been during the first part of our diner. The cleaners weren't sweeping directly around us but we felt that given its huge price tag, the dining area could be left clear until all diners had gone. We felt like we are holding them up and should hurry up. Some elements were amazing but we felt the prices don't justify what we received and this was backed up by the restaurant being empty on a friday in a half term. the total bill for 3 diners was £559 and this is the same price as Ive just paid for a 7 night all included cruise in the August school holidays. Sadly after 6 visits we will never return.
