Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto Reviews from The Last Year
Very good
Everything was very tasty and had a very good presentation, we went at 8:00 and left at 10:00 which meant that we go to experience it during the day and during the night, everything was amazing and it was very fun!!
Deliziosa
Sorprendente (Amazing). The view, the service, the attention to detail, and the food, deliziosa (delicious). It’s an experience that everyone must try.
Best restaurant experience ever
Excellent. We did the 10 course meal with wine pairings. Exquisite. Staff was impeccable. Loved the ambiance. The best restaurant experience I ever had. Can’t miss this place
Worthy of its Michelin Star
A restaurant that lives up to its Michelin hype. I had friends visiting from the US who wanted a foody trip in Toronto and I picked Don Alfonso as one of the spots that sounded impressive. The Michelin star didn’t help but I have sometimes been disappointed at Michelin restaurants. This one was not disappointment. The service was top notch, very professional, always there and friendly but without being fake or too familiar. They were also very accommodating, one of my friends could not eat fin fish and they provided many options from the tasting menu. The tasting menu itself was great. Every dish was thoroughly enjoyable, my favorites were the duck breast and the bison (which was incredible, in a puff pastry crust, perfectly cooked medium rare). No disappointments, more than enough food (my friends could not finish), good pacing. Overall, a meal worthy of multiple Michelin stars.

Spectacular experience from the tasting menu - highly
Spectacular experience from the tasting menu - highly recommend vs. the A la carte menu. Great service overlooking the lake. Thank you chef! Look up the menu online and guess the dishes from the photos. You'll get one for the bison.
Came here for a birthday and it did not disappoint.
The service didn't feel rushed with specific time slots, and the waitress took her time to explain everything. They were also attentive to the booking notes that we had an allergy and were celebrating a special day. The view is what people go for. You can add a note in the booking if you prefer lakeside or views of the city though it's not guaranteed. They also surprised us with a complimentary birthday dessert. We went with the testing menu and our favourite by far was the ravioli with truffle and mushrooms. The lobster was super tender and cooked to perfection. It is definitely on the pricier side but when we were there most people were celebrating a birthday, graduation or anniversary. We parked a five minute walk away for $10 you can also park valet for $25 if you say you're visiting the restaurant.
This is a place to try at least once.
Come for the views and take in the ambience. The best part of this restaurant is the details in the decor. From the presentation of the food to the art displayed around the space. We enjoyed the lounge service and would come back for drinks as we had appetizers and coffee. The lobster tempura was my favourite choice for lounge bites. The citrus sauce was a unique contrast to the crispness of the breaded tempera. This spot is great to celebrate an occasion. It's very easy to access and conveniently located right at the waterfront. Make sure to check it out!
Amazing food, amazing view and ambience.
Servers were very nice. Great special celebratory place.
Great food with a great view
We went there as two couples to celebrate a birthday. We had a great time, food was delicious and great service. We had a real memorable time. Make sure you take the correct elevator to go up, you get a nice special ride up.
Do my four stars equal a Michelin one star? Not sure, but
Do my four stars equal a Michelin one star? Not sure, but this place was lovely. Stopped by the bar for a glass of wine and to enjoy the vibe and the view. Very expensive, but a unique experience. The staff were so friendly and invited us to take a walk around the restaurant to see the art, the decor, and the 360 views. Saw several plates being prepared - your typical gourmet fare (tiny servings of fancy-looking dishes). I guarantee you people leave this restaurant hungry lol. But totally worth a drink at the bar to check it out.
Not Deserving of a Michelin Star Based on my Experience
The restaurant has a good view of lake Ontario, but we were not there for the view. Let's begin with very uncomfortable seating: large booth-like arrangements, where an average diner has to slip close to the table and sit upright with no back or arm support to eat or chat with others. Given the very slow service, this was even more noticeable. The restaurant has a bar, but we were not offered a cocktail menu and were not asked if we wanted one. We ordered caviar to begin, for which we waited 35 minutes. The food was visually pleasing but was presented in small portions with too many smaller sides, making it difficult to savour the ingredients. Some of the pasta dishes were simply too rich and mediocre; this can also be said for a number of other main dishes we tried on the three-course menu. Finally, our waiter insisted on giving us long explanations about what we had ordered, where the ingredients were from and how they were prepared--preventing us from enjoying our own conversation. My companions and I are seasoned travellers and diners; I would not recommend the restaurant for fine dining.

Came here for a birthday meal and while the food and service as well as view were nice, I was most disappointed in my experience after the meal. Came home with a terrible case of food poisoning and when we notified the restaurant we got a generic response saying they would investigate and follow up. It has been almost 2 months and nothing. Really not what I would have expected from a supposed 1 Michelin star establishment. I was simply looking for a proper follow up. Save your money for other spots that will treat their diners better. There are plenty of other amazing spots in Toronto. We will certainly never be going back nor do we recommend this to anyone either
Disappointing on flavours
honestly, not worthy of a Michelin star. We all did the tasting menu. Presentation was good but flavours were lacking. The canapés were bland which was our first tell tale of disappointment. Service was good, atmosphere was nice but food not quite there. having eaten at many stared restaurants my guess is this was will not retain its star. More show than taste. Too bad. Better restaurants to go to without the the cost but with the taste. Also left left hungry.
Everyone gets a perfect seat and everyone gets a perfect
Everyone gets a perfect seat and everyone gets a perfect meal. I've collected plenty of Michelin stars in Italy and Don Alfonso 1890 holds up compared to all of them. The restaurant is open very late and, depending on when your flight arrives, it's possible to fit in on your travel day. Truly memorable--the negative reviews are nonsensical.
STUNNING‼️‼️❣️
The view is AMAZING, one of the best in Toronto. The ambience is perfect and the service 💯, as well as the food. At the end of the menu my son asked secretly for a surprise because of my birthday, and offered a selection of sweets as also a Little present and a Happy Birthday letter, ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, thanks a lot! This restaurant really deserves a Michelin star🌟🤩👌🏻
Hard to really connect to an Italian restaurant, claiming
Hard to really connect to an Italian restaurant, claiming in the website to the best Italian outside of Italy, and hardly having anything Italian in its creativity or flavors on the menu. I was born in Italy and hard for me to ever remember that wagyu, soy sauces, bison, or even tempura are typical Italian ingredients or fares. The Croccantino of vegetables for example was basically a vegetable tempura, artsily plated in a tower, with a lot of fancy colorful, yet bland sauces around, but in essence I would have expected to find such a dish at Cactus Club, versus a Starred Michelin restaurant. And over the past 20 years, I have my share of 3-stars around the world. The wagyu carpaccio, was bland, thicker that expected, with very little seasoning and I left half of it on the plate just because I did not feel like wasting too much. Service was also lacking. Of course I was in the Lounge, maybe that is the reason, but plating, service, attention to details were lacking, including a whole glass of an expensive wine being poured outside of my glass onto the table (did not get a proposal for replacing that glass, except profuse apologies....go figure). So all in all an over $300 for two experience was basically a bust. I'll stick to my trattorias...

We went for a celebration dinner, and it was just absolutely stunning. The food was on point, but even more than the food, the service was absolutely stellar. They saw where every needs the view cannot be beat of the harbor. If you can get a seat at Sunset. It would be absolutely wonderful.
Great place for the wife's birthday!
Excellent service, knowledgeable staff. Best meal I've ever had in my life, my wife was pleased with the whole birthday experience.
Try hard Michelin Star - DO NOT GO THERE The group I went
Try hard Michelin Star - DO NOT GO THERE The group I went with were getting started with the typical three breads. When I was eating one of them, I felt some slippery and hard feeling until I realized it was a plastic wrapper INSIDE the bread that I was chewing on. I called a server about this, she snatched away the plate, never letting me a chance to take a photo for evidence, and let us know that she will bring a manager. The manager didn't come to the table for 15 minutes, I lost my appetite, and wanted to leave. The manager brought new plate of bread, saying that it was just a "human error" and would try their best to make the rest of the dining experience pleasurable. She didn't really apologize and implied that I just eat the new bread. I told her I lost my appetite and am not willing to eat anymore, but she tried to make us stay after already ruining the mood. They invited us to come back, but we do not plan to come back at all. How is this restaurant a Michelin 1 Star when they have SANITARY ISSUES and TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE? They don't even deserve such rating.
Amazing Restaurant!!!
Outstanding menu and the service is out of this world. We enjoyed their tasting menu with wine pairings and the overall experience was incredible. Best date night spot in the city by far! We will be back for sure.
An expensive disappointment
This past Sunday I took my wife to Don Alfonso’s restaurant for her birthday. Special occasion, really looking forward to it. Maybe our expectations were too high. We went with the a la carte menu, which with two drinks each, tax and tip clocked in at $470 and for that sort of money we expected to be blown away when in fact we were sorely disappointed. Food presentation was visually good, flavours average, but the secondi and primi (hot dishes) were tepid at best, the music choice didn’t say ‘quality’ and the staff, though pleasant and attentive, had no passion. Just followed the script. Sorry Don Alfonso, but on this occasion it didn’t work for us - just a waste of good money.
Absolutely stunning view.
Don't think you could go wrong with any of the seats at this restaurant! From the windowed elevator up to the seat, always a great view. Opted for the tasting menu and wine pairing. Menu included many dishes but the absolute show stopper for me had to have been the bison. Everything was great, but the bison for me was beyond exceptional. Service flowed well and servers and sommelier was great at explaining every dish/wine that was served.
Decent food with amazing view.
However this restaurant doesn't feel like a Michelin 1 star. Food was pretty standard and not very creative. The service was just so so - I had to pour my own wine couple times and the timing of each course was very inconsistent.
Michelin?
Really a noisy place. When one enters a Michelin star restaurant one expects more atmosphere and a better service less chaotic and better organized. Our tasting menu was really disappointing even the pasta was overcooked. Only Italian red Aglianico bottle was perfect. Too generous Michelin star award.
Tiny Portion and Once in a Life Time Expensive DIning Experience
Our son and daughter in law brought us here for dinner during their last visit to Toronto. It was our first dining experience in a Michelin Starred restaurant. We chose the 8 course dinnerThese are the dishes that stood out for us: 1.The seared Quebec Duck Breast 2The Organic Manitoba Tenderloin wrapped in layered Swiss Chard. 3The British Columbia Wild Turbot fish 4.and finally the dessert plates. My main comments on this dining experience: 1. The washroom are tiny . There were only two cubicles inside the squeezy toilets. 2. We were assigned one service person but our orders each item was brought in by kitchen trainees who rushed through explaining what they were serving us. They looked like they wanted to breeze through the presentation or were ashamed to stand over and serve customers. Before you can ask them what they serve again they scurry away. 3. Not all the items were deserving a Michelin star, we loved the steak, the duck and the fish and of course the dessert out of the 8 course tasting menu.

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
