I have to admit that I usually don't leave a bad review, unless something has gone really wrong and went unchecked. I am hoping to prevent certain unmet expectations from future patrons. Having tried to have dinner at this place for many years now, I was always unsuccessful in making a reservation. To my surprise I was able to make one for a Friday night. I was really excited to feel the welcome and eat the authentic deliciousness of what was supposed to be so much talked about, Nonna's experience, or so I thought. This was no grandmother's welcoming place! Very dark ambiance with some obscure toys... chairs and tables without imagination and rather uncomfortable. Barely any room to maneuver for anyone including the waitstaff. What also irked me was the tension in the room, not so much from the patrons, but from the staff... the bar tender (owner?) had not smiled once, Nonnas did not even come close to my own! The Italian one chatting up every table, which I admit was cute, while delegating to the wait staff, again while bickering with the other rotating Nonna who was on her phone... I wasn't prying, just very difficult to miss the dynamic in such a small space. Foodwise, it was mediocre at best. It wasn't bad, just nothing special... we had some apps from both the staple menu and from the rotating Nonnas. We didn't finish the feta cigars at $16 /4 pcs. If one can't tell the difference between a store bought and the restaurant served dish, there is a problem. The meatballs were pretty good, but as the Nonna herself pointed out, very easy to make at home... the branzino was prepared well. I have to admit that I loved the salad that came with the fish. My husband also wanted to try the Japanese vegetarian entree... Unfortunately none of the dishes left a wow! Had high expectations and was disappointed. This is not a place where I will long to return to, unlike my grandmother's kitchen.
