I had my birthday dinner here this past weekend and it was some of the best, most authentic Italian food I've had in a restaurant. The portions are enormous to begin with; I had enough food for two days. It was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The moscato is a must try; you could taste all of the hints of fruit and it was super refreshing. The service was speedy! It was a packed house but they had our entree out within 15 minutes. The ambiance was charming and electic with it resemebling an old school italian kitchen. This is a must try if in the DC area!

We have been coming here for over 12 years and always love everything we order. My favorite dish is the Linguini Cardinale (with capellini). I could eat this meal everyday. The veal parm is also amazing, as well as the Sunday sauce and cannelloni. Service is always spectacular. Highly recommend making a reservation.

pros beautiful atmosphere, great service, and a historical restaurant in dc! cons: the italian food is honestly overpriced (30-50 an entree for pasta 60+ for seafood). although the portions are good, the food itself isn't that yummy. maybe i am biased coming from a city with great italian food, but ive gotten much better for way less elsewhere
The food was incredible and the service was truly special.
The location makes the experience truly special.
Lovely Italian spot-best in DC!
I went with a group of friends on a weekday around 3pm. Even at that time, the restaurant had a good amount of people in it. I would recommend making a reservation if you would like to go on the weekends or evenings. The complementary bread was absolutely amazing. The dishes, though a little on the pricier side, refresh, flavorful, homemade, and the portions were generous. We tried the Venetian summer drink, and it was one of the best alcoholic drinks Iโve ever had. The atmosphere was enchanting, and the waiters very attentive. I will definitely return.
Where do I start.
...The service is so amazing it's spooky... The place was jammed packed on a hot Saturday afternoon. Hostess and waiters were extremely nice and efficient. I was afraid due to sometimes, when you go to packed places the quality of food and portion size takes a huge hit. Not this place and time... Everything about this place deserved the 5 stars I'm giving ... which further makes me believe they're aliens and robots ...other then auntie making fresh pasta soon as you walk in....if your ever in the DC area please stop by this place you won't regret it.
Must eat in DC
The most charming atmosphere - and best American-Italian comfort food. Crazily generous servings. The lobster ravioli had so much fresh lobster in huge chunks in that it must have taken almost a whole lobster. Great for big kids. Do not miss out on this feel good experience!

We visited for my daughter's birthday and it was great! Plentiful portions and professional service. Had a hiccup being seated, but everything else was great!
This place was so cool to come too.
It seems like it was located in a very popular area with a lot of small shops/restaurants. There is some street parking but also a parking garage across the street which is where we parked. It was very convenient. Make sure you make reservations weeks in advance or you will not eat there. I doubt they can take walk-ins because it is so busy. We had reservations and was seated immediately. The place was crowded. The tables were really close together which made it hard for you to get in and out of your table. I'm pretty sure it was a fire hazard the way they had the table so close. That was my only complaint. We received the bread with the oil. It was so good. They give you 3-4 different kinds of bread. We ordered the meatballs and the arcani as appetizers. They were both delicious. I will say we pretty much got two meatball appetizers. The arcani was almost like a bread meatball. My meal was the Tortelloni di Michele. It had a really good flavor but I did think there was too much beef inside the tortellini. I feel like it was missing something on the inside like cheese or veggies or something. It was good but I wouldn't get it again. My favorite part of it was the sauce on top. All in all good. It is a great spot to come too especially with seeing the lady that is making the pasta fresh when you first walk in. That is pretty cool. You may want to use the bathroom before you sit down because it will be hard to get out. You should try this place when visiting the area.
Food was good Sunday Sauce was my favorite.
Atmosphere is really kitschy and fun. Dessert look amazing but we were too full

This place was great! I got the veal ravioli, and my friend got the pesto pasta. Drinks were great and the atmosphere was wonderful.
Excellent Homemade Italian Food
This family owned Italian restaurant has been around for almost 40 years. It is in the heart of Georgetown next to the old canal. You will see La Nona, through the sidewalk window, filling pasta with different types of fillings. The atmosphere is tight, busy and more of a fast pace as opposed to slow fine dining. They try to move their tables, so service is above and beyond. Any dish you order will be excellent. Their sauces are all homemade and quite amazing. We shared a Lasagna and Chicken Parm with our friends and it was quite tasty. As to the desserts, they are also homemade and spectacular as well. WARNING, every dish on their menu is shareable. The wife and I have been having dinner here for the past 30 years and have never seen a person eat an entire plate. As to the wine, it is quite extensive. However, it obviously caters primarily to Italian wines. Definitely a great night out if visiting DC.
Fresh pasta and delicious sauces
Great pasta and sauces. Homemade sausage was delicious. Same for the freshly made pasta. I had the vodka pasta sauceโฆ. wished I could have purchased some - but we had two more days in DC before traveling home. Hubby had the carbonara it was also delicious. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Best Italian Ever!
This is the Italian restaurant dreams are made of! Huge menu with lots of homemade pasta, seafood and traditional Italian options. Portions are huge, so consider sharing! Definitely leave room for desserts!
not recommended
This was probably the worst restaurant experience I've had in 5 years living in DC. Hardly know where to start... It is absolutely cacophonous so impossible to have a conversation with your fellow diners, even hunched over the table. Our waiter was reasonably attentive but I had the sense he doubled as an undertaker--smarmy/creepy, you kind of wanted him to leave and stop hovering over the table. But then the food. It was uniformly overcooked (fish, vegetables, pasta, risotto...) and oversauced. I have honestly had more palatable food from a cheap cafeteria buffet. The prices were grossly inflated. The portion sizes were huge, but in this case that's not necessarily a good thing. Like some of the other reviewers, I cannot understand how this place remains in business, unless it is with people with a nostalgic yearning for the worst of 1980s Italian-Americana?
Our favorite DC restaurant!
Always the best ! We love this place!!! The canolli for dessert is amazing. Wonderful service. Plus- The seasonal decor is always tons of fun, too!
AMAZING
Make reservations in advance you normally can't just walk in and get a table. The food was amazing and well worth every penny. There is a parking garage across the street 1 block up. The staff is very friendly. We will be back next time we are in town.
Girls night out
Simply amazing. A MUST do if you have time -but make reservations. The food and service were exceptional. I'll definitely be back.

This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend who lived in the area. It was Thursday afternoon around lunch time. About four or five other customers in the restaurant. I immediately noticed how dark it was in the place and the pink lighting. I thought that I could maybe bare it, but I decided to ask if I could see the window. I waited quite a while for someone to come over to the table. Unfortunately, when the waiter did come over he said that the staff had just dropped some plates and glasses, so that wouldn't be possible. Understandable, after hearing the huge crash. I finally got a glass of water, and bread. The bread was delicious! The salad was mediocre along with the ravioli. I kept wondering what it would be like if the restaurant was packed, the wait time between everything was just a little too long. Especially when the place was not packed. The dessert was very good.

A DC staple!! A must visit restaurant around literally any holiday because they decorate the heck out of their dining room! The portions are HUGE as is the menu, you really cannot go wrong with a choice here. Definitely get a dessert - the cakes and cheesecakes are phenomenal. If you can get a reservation, it's a MUST GO restaurant.
Amazing food and service for years! Love it.
We celebrate special occasions here often. Go hungry!
The sausage cannelloni was very mid.
Stick to their more popular options! Ravioli is solid, and the gnocchi bolognese is above average. Overall kinda overpriced, more quantity than quality, but it's a reliable option most people can find something they like at.
Food was amazing!! Service was on point.
Everyone was so nice and we didn't have to wait long for drinks or food. The desserts were to die for. Will absolutely be back!
It's a reputable place.
We had a family meal, but it's Lent, so no alcohol. Three entrees and water ended up being $180. You'll hear about the portions- they just didn't impress me. And it was very loud- hard to have a conversation. If you want pasta- enjoy. Don't expect tradition Italians dishes- these were more American interpretations. And be ready to pay.

Bring a buddy or starve yourself before you come! The lasagna was quadruple the serving size I'm used to. The bread basket had three different breads, the deserts were enough for three people. We still have left overs 2 days later. WORTH the high price. Budget this in!
First the decor was amazing! Whatever holiday is coming up
First the decor was amazing! Whatever holiday is coming up they are decorated for, in the most extra way possible. The service was great. Water was always filled, and food was served in a quick manner. Lastly, the food was outstanding. 10/10 Couldn't have been better! Everything from the bread and olive oil, the pastas, to the cheesecakes, everything was top notch. Can't recommend the food and atmosphere here enough!

I go here for every major holiday the last one being Halloween. Filomena really knows how to bring on the vibes. From their scratch made pasta to their decor, this is the place I want to be every major holiday season. The staff is always so kind too.
Try to eat in the "kitchen" for an extra wonderful experience
I got a wonderful opportunity not just to come back here twice in one year, but to try the "kitchen table". If you are luck enough to get the chance, you need to take it as a true bucket list dinner. It looks like you have been sat in an Italian grandmother's kitchen at a literal kitchen table. The menu is the same but it is a fixed price meal of three courses. They encourage you to go for the big dishes and specials since the price is the same either way. We shared four appetizers - burrata caprese salad, lobster arancini, lamb skewers, and beef carpaccio. All four were excellent and I would have been happy to just have a meal of those. Two of us had a long bone in ribeye that was cooked perfectly, was tender, and was flavorful and came with a mushroom risotto. Another had a beautiful ravioli as a vegetarian approach. The last had a glorious sea bass special. When it gets to dessert, I always have the tiramisu, but because we all got a dessert, I got to try the tres leches cake as well. Our vegetarian had a beautiful strawberry cheesecake. The last item was a deconstructed cannoli. Also, we had a wonderful Brunello recommended by the staff that was an amazing bottle and was only twice retail, so very reasonable for a restaurant. Nico is an amazing server if you are lucky enough to have him. I hope you get the chance to try it out.
Amazing food, customer service & vibe! I was super happy to
Amazing food, customer service & vibe! I was super happy to get a last minute reservation while my sister was visiting me. It was my first time going & definitely will be returning. The plates of pasta were huge, so unless you intentionally are trying to have leftovers, I recommend sharing a dish!
Wonโt go back
I had been to this restaurant years back and remembered it fondly. However on this visit the food was mediocre at best and overpriced. The service was adequate and I did enjoy the Easter decorations. Wonโt go back.
Great cozy restaurant.
Yesterday (2/13/2024) was my first time to visit Filomena in Georgetown. The restaurant was great! The food was absolutely delicious! The staff was wonderful, sincere, helpful, efficient and knowledgeable! You feel like you know these people for a long time! Very cozy! The price was expensive but food was absolutely delicious and it was worth every penny of it! Also the size of the serving was huge! You wouldnโt leave the restaurant hungry:) Iโm looking forward to visit and enjoy Filomena again!
Authentic Italian
A restaurant with a warm and friendly ambiance. Was packed on a Thursday evening ~ tends to be loud and crowded. Bread service is wonderful with a comprehensive authentic menu. My gnocchi with broccoli entree was good. Everyone enjoyed their meal.
First timers to know
100% donโt pass the opportunity to say here. Reservations are a must! The turtle cheesecake is amazing! The vodka sauce and meatballs are a must.
Traditional Italian gourmet. Nice place.
The homemade bread with olive oil/vinegar was very tasteful. Great traditional pasta. Fresh and crisp organic green salad. Way too large portions (the american way). Excellentc service.
If youโre in DC go to Filomena
Theyโre celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and for good reason. We donโt live in the DC area but we visit at least annually and weโve been going to Filomena for 25 years since going to college nearby. We never miss a trip to Filomena when we are in DC. Have introduced many friends to Filomena over the years and everyone loves it. Weโve never had a bad time here and this is one of our favorite restaurants in the world. You canโt beat the food for Southern Italian and the service is always incredible. There is just something about the experience from the pasta mamas rolling pasta at the front door to the over the top yet perfectly charming decor which changes for Christmas, Valentines, etcโฆthat makes this place so great. Everything weโve ever eaten was delicious. Hospitality is reminiscent of an age when restaurants werenโt just about eating. This is one of those places where you can take kids and sit next to a business dinner sitting next to a couple on a date and it just all works. Portions are huge so share family style. Make a reservation.

Amazing atmosphere the staff are so welcoming and food was amazing. I can't wait to go back. The Lobster balls are incredible, everything is good. You can get something different every time and not be disappointed.
Incredible early dinner!
We (family and party of 6) went for an early dinner. The restaurant was very busy and decorated for Easter, bunnies everywhere. Our waiter, Giancarlo was incredible, knowledgable, professiona, personable and his timing was fantastic. We didn't wait and were not rushed. The staff assisting was as professional. The food was delicious. We splt a couple appetizers which were fantastic. I love Rome and always enjoy the food and the compliments from our party, all very travelled were flowing from the first bite until the desserts we shared. We will be back as if you can't spend the weekend in Rome, a trip to D.C. is always a possiblity.
Some of the best Italian food this critic has experienced!
Some of the best Italian food this critic has experienced! The Lobster Arancini and Ravioli All Aragosta Mari & Monti were outstanding. For a $40-$60 plate of pasta, you get enough for two. Our server was very polite and helpful. Fun decor/vibe. Will absolutely be back!

Down in the basement and a little beat up - needs a good clean up. The food is ok here. The waiter kept telling me what he thought I should order even after I told him what wanted. Kind of annoyed me a little bit. The Sundays sauce was real good, fresh homemade sausage and ribs were terrific! The chicken Marsala was terrible. The other red sauce dishes were good but everyone's dishes had to much sauce.
Asian or Italian?
This place is very identity confused. Walking into the restaurant from the street it appears that you are entering a Thai restaurant not an Italian. Large ornaments, curious artwork and bizarre dolls around the entire restaurant. Not many Italians work here, which is curious for an Italian restaurant. The staff appear to be all Latino origin. Food is an odd mix of enormous portions of unseasoned and bland food. Odd parts are good but other parts are not good at all. The classic Italian dish of lasagna was huge and uninteresting. No seasoning, no love was put into its making either. This is a food factory, churning out plates of uninteresting, bland food prepared and served with no love or attention to detail. Terrible! We rated it 3/10 and the only good thing about here is the wine list.

I love fresh pasta, and was excited to try this place! Our table had the "matrimonio" (giant meatballs and cheese ravioli), linguine cardinale (lobster), and the seafood linguine dish (clams, scallops, mussels, etc). We also had Caesar salads, drinks, and desserts. I'll start with the meh and get to the good stuff. The salad was ok, but not amazing. A bit heavy on the Caesar dressing. But a salad was helpful to balance out the rest of the meal. So, had I known how huge the portions would be, we would have ordered differently-- one pasta dish, one veggie side, one seafood/meat (or even just two entrees). The lobster dish was heavy with the sauce (creamy vodka), which I'm not a big fan of. The lobster was generously served and tender, but it was almost unappetizing for me to have such a giant plate of food. I realize that I've probably been primed by fancy places to associate good food with smaller portions, but I also felt so wasteful, especially being from out of town and not having an easy way to reheat leftovers. But I also feel like a lighter helping of sauce would help the pasta and lobster shine. If I ever returned, I'd ask them to box up half of it before bringing it to the table. The ravioli were a bit too Al dente, and the meatballs were perfect. The sauce for the seafood pasta was definitely lighter, but still a giant serving-- great for sharing! The decor (Easter), combined with crowded tables and noise was also a bit overwhelming for our party, but again, to each their own. Service was quite good overall. The folks were warm and checked on us the right amount. I LOVED the olive oil and herb dipping sauce for the bread, and the tiramisu and strawberry shortcake were excellent, though difficult to finish after the heavy meal. We all have different palates and sensory profiles, so again, some clearly adore this place, while for me it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Italian and Italian American cuisine varies by region, etc, and I really enjoy a lighter style. I also recommend walking if you can-- it helps with working up an appetite and helping digest your meal!

I went over the weekend and from start to finish, it was such a pleasurable experience. I was seating immediately and I had Maria as a server. Maria was kind and attentive. The bread was amazing, drink was awesome, and the food was even better. I realized that I like my lamb medium b/c of this place. the lamb was cooked to perfection. They offered an almond drink at the end. I WILL BACK FOR MORE.
Second time visiting and both times bringing out of town
Second time visiting and both times bringing out of town guests. For both times, we had to secure a reservation several weeks out and for a party of 6+ for dinner on a weekend. Parking is pretty hectic as it is all street parking in a busy part of Georgetown. We were able to visit at a time the decorations match a holiday or important event (Christmas and Easter). The whole restaurant has a fun family vibe with wonderful decorations. The service is top notch and very catering with great recommendations if needed from drinks, main dish, and deserts! So far, every dish we have tried has been delicious and in running for our personal all-time favorite. Portions are hefty for one and enough for two if sharing. Highly recommend for all occasions. We will definitely be back! Enjoy!

Fantastic food, wine, and service! Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and the decorations were cute as well!
Excellent service with family style Italian food.
A must in DC. The service is superb.
This is a DC/Georgetown staple.
I consistently recommend this restaurant to my friends and family that visit. I am trying to work my way through the menu, and have not had one bad dish! The quality is fantastic, super rich sauces, good ingredients, and the quantity is GIGANTIC. You will definitely be needing boxes to take home and eat the next day. The food does reheat well also. Some favorites are the "Rigatoni Con Pollo E Vodka" or the "Lasagna Alla Bolognese". They make fresh pasta that you can see in the restaurant when you walk down the steps. They always decorate for holidays. Below is a picture when I went around Valentine's Day.All of the staff is nice, patient, attentive, and quick considering all the tables they have in the restaurant! Reservations fill up quick so make sure you book in advance especially for parties over 2 if you want to go Friday-Sunday. Will continue to go back!!
So disappointing.
There are of course great American Italian restaurants, this is not one of them (and to my fellow Europeans, this is not an Italian restaurant, do not expect good or even fair Italian food). Looking at the menu online, I was hoping the price tag will be a reflection of quality. Unfortunately, not. I guess quality is replaced by quantity in order to justify the actual price of a dish: oversized, overcooked pasta and risotto. Poor. Service was very good; wine list is interesting. The kitchen is the problem... Sad. If in the area, just pass and go instead to Fiola Mare that is at walking distance. Comparable in price, much nicer setting, a world apart in terms of actual fine dining experience.
Came here for my friends birthday.
We had a large group (16 people). They were very accommodating as we made a reservation a week prior. This place is very big but does get crowded. You will need to make a reservation for any party size in advance. I ordered the lobster ravioli. It was delicious and had a generous amount of lobster. My gf ordered the seafood pasta that came with scallops, muscles, clams and more. Also very good. We had some sharable items to include chicken Parm, and gnocchi. I thought every dish was good minus the gnocchi. Might not be there specialty. This place is rather pricey but it is perfect for special occasions.
