I've lived in Golders Green for over 2 years and have
I've lived in Golders Green for over 2 years and have visited Local Friends Chinese restaurant many times during that period (for both eating in and takeaway). Sadly, what used to be a great restaurant has gone downhill over the last 12 months. They used to do a great chicken satay, but the last time we had it the chicken was off. They recently refurbished the restaurant so I thought I'd give them another chance, but they fell far short of my expectations and the chicken was not fresh again. I also asked for vegetables with the dish I'd ordered and was told that it came with these, but was very disappointed to find it only contained chilli's and the meat, and way too many chillis! When I think back over the last 2 years, there have been many times that they messed up our order; they regularly forget the sweet & sour sauce with the spring rolls, and forget to add extra items that we have paid for (which is annoying when you get home and find it missing). So I've decided I won't be eating at Local Friends ever again.

Local Friends is a value for money Chinese restaurant on North End Road in Golders Green which I found on Zomato. First things first, the menu on Zomato is outdated and doesn't include, for example, the shredded pork crispy noodles I originally called to order. I had to settle for a chicken chowmein instead. They didn't have any of the beef or pork items from the previous menu either, so I accepted the beef with green pepper the lady on the phone suggested. Do you at least have a wonton soup? I asked. Yes, of course, we have wonton soup, she shot back. And with that, I ordered my first home delivery from Local Friends (free in the general vicinity for orders of ยฃ20 and above). My order arrived within 40 minutes, not bad, but they forgot to include the sauces, chopsticks, and menu I requested - basically, they forgot everything except the food. I couldn't decide if the noodles were dry, bland, both or simply disgusting. They weren't good, that's for sure. Not until I mixed the beef in. In all honesty, the beef was pretty good on its own but mixed in, it saved the noodles from the bin - desperate times, desperate measures. And lastly, the wonton soup was let down by the wontons themselves, which tasted...off. So, a thumbs down from me for Local Friends. Next time I want to order Chinese in I'll call family-run Oriental Star opposite Finchley Road station. Hey! Be the first to ReplyCame here with my Mum for a quick lunch today.
I'd been wanting to go for ages and when we found ourselves shopping in Brent Cross at around lunchtime we decided to drive the two miles or so to Golders Green and give it a go.The Chinese menu has some really exciting dishes on it but we got distracted by the dim-sum menu we saw in the window (we had to ask the staff for the paper dim-sum menu but they were very happy to bring it over when we asked) We ordered Steamed Prawn Dumplings, Beef Dumplings with Ginger &Spring Onion, Roast Pork Buns, Grilled Prawn & Pork Dumplings, Roast Pork Cheung Fun. We also tried to order the Mashed Taro Croquettes and Fried Turnip Cakes but they didn't have them that day, which ended up being a pretty good thing as we were stuffed! All this and a huge pot of Chinese tea was ยฃ15 with service, amazing value! The food was fantastic. The dim-sum was all great quality and delicious. The staff were lovely and attentive in taking away and adding dishes but not at all intrusive. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!

....nope, I am in London......But it felt like I was in a little, local chinese restaurant, though. I have never been to China, but this was so authentic, this is how I imagine it is in China.Local friends is free of "Schnick-Schnack" and focuses on one thing, and one thing only: the food!We ordered only vegetarian dishes. And chinese beer. And while we waited we were able to listen to a rather "loud" discussion amongst the staff, which made the whole guests quiet, turn around to see whats going on, ย chinese words were exchanged and matters were straightened and our food was served.Seriously, I thought, do I really have to travel all the way to London to have one of the best chinese meals in the world???? ย Really???? Well, I guess so. Because this was the best I have ever had. Full stop!If everything tastes as good as that in the "real" China I wanna go there...If not: London is not too far away!
Be the first to ReplyYet another Chinese gem for those living in North London.
In fact, I think this restaurant is better than most of the tourist halls in dingy downtown Chinatown. The decor is very plain; i.e. no gaudy or tacky decorations. The service is quick and friendly...When ordering, pay attention to the special Hunan menu...the other menu offers dishes Cantonese style, which can be found anywhere in Chinatown...

Was taken here by a friend last night who knew the place well. Not particularly outstanding from the outside, looking like a slightly run-down Chinese restaurant; and one is not disabused of this notion once one walks through the door. However, the menus are extensive and the service efficient, friendly but not overly pretentious or overbearing. The food quality is good, very middle of the road for Chinese, but "bang per buck" wise it does very well indeed -- much tastier than I was expecting from the way the place looked!A good, safe bet if you're looking for a Chinese in this part of town.
