Gravitas Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Vegetarians beware.
We notified staff that I was a vegetarian weeks ahead of time (during our reservation), but staff asked again when we got there about dietary restrictions, as if they didn't know. When I said I was a vegetarian, they said they could accommodate me with a specially made entree -- only for that entree to be a few braised carrots with sauce. Given what I paid, it was borderline insulting to receive an entree that was so lacking in substance. My friends' entrees had protein, carbs, fat -- while mine was like a SNL skit of a fine dining restaurant. Moreover, the dish was unbalanced (overly sweet) and the carrots were undercooked. I contacted the restaurant directly with my concerns but haven't heard back. Also, during service, we waited awhile for our canapes. I've been to many fine dining restaurants, and this is the first time I've been disappointed. If you can't accommodate vegetarians, just say so.
I am not a person who enjoys fancy restaurants which DC
I am not a person who enjoys fancy restaurants which DC does not really lack of. My wife does though so to pick a restaurant for date nights we will debate, compromise and end up going to the restaurant that she picks. I find that almost always dc fancy restaurants are charging you for the ambience and the food falls short. Same goes for most of the Michelin starred restaurants. When I came to gravitas for the first time, my expectations were similar for their tasting menu. The amuse bouche came and it was definitely above what I was expecting. I did not get my hopes high though expecting the next few courses to meet my low expectations. But alas, each dish that came in was better than the previous. The sashimi was my favorite. Melted in my mouth. I was really not happy about sharing it with my wife (she had ordered the vegetarian option). We have been coming here regularly since then and every single time the food does not disappoint. As I write this review, I already have a reservation for chef Matt Baker's other restaurant Michele's for my birthday. Looking forward to emptying my pockets - very happily I might add.
You definitely have to have a palate for this cuisine and I
You definitely have to have a palate for this cuisine and I think it'll hit harder. It's modern American but has a very specific upscale flare to the meals. The service is pristine. The servers are respectful, attentive, precise, knowledgeable and just so splendid. They have three course, four course, five course meals options and this night that the three course. The three course is exclusively available on Wednesdays and this is the day I went. Bummed because I would have loved the four course! lol. First I had the parsnip and apple velouté- which had a great presentation but it wasn't for me but it a reach for me to order and feel like if someone liked these contents they would love this. My friend got the tuna app and loved it. The second course we both got the branzino. (The menu didn't match online so maybe it changes because I woulda got the rigatoni I see online now!). And it came with a risotto but I don't like risotto but the branzino slapped! Lastly got the coconut rice pudding as a closer and again made well and the bread was my favorites! I love me bread to start the Meal! I was able to find parking pretty well on a Wednesday and vibes and intimacy is what this place provides. Great for amazing service, intimate... business dinners catch ups etc.
I haven't visited Gravitas since they first opened and
I haven't visited Gravitas since they first opened and before earning their first Michelin Star. Back then, I remember the food being good but not amazing. I came back during Restaurant Week and overall my experience was positive! The front staff offered to check in coats and immediately seat guests. The interior design is rustic and gives a more casual vibe during the day. The free bread was in the dryer side though it was still warm and came with soft butter. The appetizers were visually appealing and set the stage of what was to come. The main entrees we got, pork and fish, each had elements on the plate that blended well with the meats. In my opinion, it's been hard to find good plated desserts from michelin restaurants. The desserts we got were unfortunately just okay for me, however the flavor combinations were interesting.
I took my wife to Gravitas on Valentine's Day to celebrate
I took my wife to Gravitas on Valentine's Day to celebrate how amazing she is. This is a 1 star Michelin restaurant in DC located in NE. Overall I had a great time and experience dining with them. The food was great and the service was good. In between the 4 course menu they had 2 other dishes "butternut squash soup" and bread. The soup was amazing. The first course I had was Chestnut-White Sweet Potato Velouté which was savory and had a nostalgic taste. The second course I had was Chorizo Crusted Scallops. The third course I had was Roasted Veal Tenderloin and the final course was Butterfinger. Every dish was unique and had its own feel to it. The portions were small by packed with flavor. After the meal I was satisfied. I had 1 issue with my experience. The issue I had was a time gap between the second and third course. We were waiting for upwards of 35 mins. I'm not sure why but I was not a fan. I personally do not believe the cost aligned with the food quantity but it did align with the quality. Thankful for the experience.
This was the last place I came for DC's Restaurant Week
This was the last place I came for DC's Restaurant Week (Winter 2024). Gravitas has been on my list for a long while but making it out to Ivy City has always made it a less desirable option. I'll start off by saying that the cocktail I got was NOT very impressive. I also tasted some of the others my friends got and thought they were just ok. I guess my expectations were set high based on how creative the ingredients sounded (infusions + more unique mixers). I will say that the cocktail prices here are par for DC so I can't complain too much, but next time I come I'll probably stick with wine. Onto the food. Everything was very, very good. I came hungry and ultimately splurged for the five course tasting menu. I'm glad I did because I would've still been hungry by the end with the three course option. I know its a tasting menu restaurant so I don't expect a big meal but portions could've been a little better or maybe some bread for the table would've been nice? I don't often go to tasting menu restaurants so I'm willing to accept this is lore of a "me" problem. Anyway, the food was all great. But I'll say that for the reputation Gravitas has I didn't feel that anything was especially memorable as a strong food memory. If you choose to dine here you'll have a good time, enjoy the ambiance, and the food will be high quality, but again, I feel like there are better places to go in DC if you're a foodie searching for unique flavors. Overall, if I come back in the future I would love to see their cocktails live up to the creativity conveyed by the menu.

We reserved a dinner for 4 people last Sunday to try the restaurant week menu but ended up doing the 5 course dish. The standouts were the pork belly (melts in your mouth), butternut squash agnolotti (ridiculously flavorful), and the chocolate torte (semi sweet, and with ice cream, it was next level). The bread they provided tasted great cause it was crunchy and also soft at the same time. Rest was okay (complimentary tuna bite with tomato bisque, Koji Cured Salmon Crudo, Duck and Escargot (blandish), Spice-Roasted Pork Tenderloin, and White Bolognese [which my cousin shared with me]). The inside has a modern decoration style, with the kitchen and chefs in view of everyone. Decent parking around the area too. Our waiter did a good job with answers to our questions and gave solid recommendations. Glad to have tried it out.
The best thing about restaurant week is sampling Michelin
The best thing about restaurant week is sampling Michelin star restaurants at a discounted price! I took my wife here during her birthday week to try the restaurant week menu. We almost upgraded to the 5 course meal, but decided not to. The 3 course meal was good. My favorite was probably the Branzino. I think I specified birthday when making a reservation online, but we didn't get any special cake or anything for dessert like what most restaurants do. All in all, a pretty good dining experience for restaurant week.
Loved this restaurant! We went during Restaurant Week.
Everything, from the moment you enter the building is excellent. They opened the door, took my coat, and there is a really warming fireplace in the waiting area (which I sat at while my husband parked). Service was very good, friendly, and thorough. This is not the place to get full, imo, but the food was super tasty. Would definitely go back.
Very good dinner here during restaurant week! There was 2
Very good dinner here during restaurant week! There was 2 options either a 3 course for $65 or 5 course for $95. We went with the 5 course and I'm so happy we did! Sadly the 3rd course was a pasta course and since I'm GF I couldn't have that but they let me swap with one of the option from the first course. They first gave us bread and olives then a palate cleanser which was this amazing beet salad with shishito dressing spoon and some kind of chestnut broth which I could've drank a quart of! All of the courses were very well thought out and tasted amazing. I enjoyed the main course of the duo pork but it wasn't as spectacular as the rest. First course was salmon crudo, second course was duck and escargot, third course was tuna sashimi, fourth course was duo of pork and fifth course was chocolate torte!
Disappointment
We went to Gravitas for dinner on New Year’s Eve and the experience was disappointing from the minute we walked in the door. The hostess was overwhelmed for no apparent reason, since the restaurant was not particularly crowded. The “waiting area” was a collection leftover furniture in an unheated space. We were told that the long wait for our table was due to other customers not leaving their tables (again, despite there being numerous open tables). We were offered nothing while we waited - no water, no drinks, not a seat at the bar (which was empty). Once we did finally sit down, it took 20 minutes for anyone who worked there to acknowledge us. Our server asked if anyone had talked to us yet. She was fine once the initial awkwardness had passed. Then, it took quite a while to get through our first three courses - the first one took an hour itself - and then the final two felt rushed. We selected the wine pairings, and at least two courses of food were set down before we even had glasses. And then there was the food itself… most of it was unremarkable and some of it was so bad we didn’t touch it. And yet, our dishes were cleared with no questions asked. It was obvious several dishes, including the agnolotti and the halibut, sat under the warming lamp for long enough to continue (over)cooking. The lamb saddle was unidentifiable as lamb, tasting like canned meat. Having been to several Michelin restaurants, I’m baffled as to how Gravitas has a star. I not only would not put it in the same category, I would hands down not recommend it to anyone.
If you are looking to have a gastronomic experience, this is not the right address in DC !
Not sure how this place got 1 Michelin Star. Service was ok, place is a little noisy, but they can't do nothing about it. But the food... Once again a "Chef" that is putting fancy ingredients together simply because creating a dish with humble products require more knowledge and technic... If you are looking to have a gastronomic experience, this is not the right address in DC !
Below average Michelin Star Restaurant
I visited with my wife during restaurant week. I selected the 5 course meal and my wife selected the 3 course from the Restaurant Week menu. The portions were small, one of the smallest portions from all the Michelin star restaurants we visited. The plates are hit or miss. My wife had the heirloom tomato salad and it was perfect. I had Citrus siracha shrimp and it was ok, kind of bland. I had the Yellow fin tuna tartare and I did not like it. I told the server I did not like it and he could not believe it. I ate it but I did not like the flavor. I had linguini and clams after and it was average. My wife ordered the Koji Marinated Salmon and it was tiny, the portion of the salmon was like half what they showed on their Instagram page. I looked it up when I got home and I believe they cut the portion in half, it really looked like an appetizer and it was the main course. I had the slow roasted pork and it was good, not great but the portion was ok. The pork was probably the only plate that was a good size. For dessert my wife ordered the peaches and cream and it was excellent. I ordered the coconut chocolate mousse and it was not good. Neither me or my wife liked the flavor of the mousse. Halfway trough the meal I asked the server for bread. Everyone was getting bread at the beginning of their meal and I got mine because I asked and it was after I was done with the third plate. My wife ordered a drink for $15 dollars and it was literally like just the bottom of the glass. We saw two other people with the same drink and the portion was bigger. The place is small and the tables are really close together. I could hear the whole conversation from the people next to me. Overall, I am disappointed and I would not return. Total bill for restaurant week was $257 dollars plus tip and it was at half the price of their usual menu. I have visited many other Michelin Star restaurants and this one is not close in quality to the others. P.S: My wife ate two slices of pizza when we arrived home and she does not eat a lot.
