You definitely have to have a palate for this cuisine and I
You definitely have to have a palate for this cuisine and I think it'll hit harder. It's modern American but has a very specific upscale flare to the meals. The service is pristine. The servers are respectful, attentive, precise, knowledgeable and just so splendid. They have three course, four course, five course meals options and this night that the three course. The three course is exclusively available on Wednesdays and this is the day I went. Bummed because I would have loved the four course! lol. First I had the parsnip and apple velouté- which had a great presentation but it wasn't for me but it a reach for me to order and feel like if someone liked these contents they would love this. My friend got the tuna app and loved it. The second course we both got the branzino. (The menu didn't match online so maybe it changes because I woulda got the rigatoni I see online now!). And it came with a risotto but I don't like risotto but the branzino slapped! Lastly got the coconut rice pudding as a closer and again made well and the bread was my favorites! I love me bread to start the Meal! I was able to find parking pretty well on a Wednesday and vibes and intimacy is what this place provides. Great for amazing service, intimate... business dinners catch ups etc.

I am not a person who enjoys fancy restaurants which DC does not really lack of. My wife does though so to pick a restaurant for date nights we will debate, compromise and end up going to the restaurant that she picks. I find that almost always dc fancy restaurants are charging you for the ambience and the food falls short. Same goes for most of the Michelin starred restaurants. When I came to gravitas for the first time, my expectations were similar for their tasting menu. The amuse bouche came and it was definitely above what I was expecting. I did not get my hopes high though expecting the next few courses to meet my low expectations. But alas, each dish that came in was better than the previous. The sashimi was my favorite. Melted in my mouth. I was really not happy about sharing it with my wife (she had ordered the vegetarian option). We have been coming here regularly since then and every single time the food does not disappoint. As I write this review, I already have a reservation for chef Matt Baker's other restaurant Michele's for my birthday. Looking forward to emptying my pockets - very happily I might add.
Be the first to ReplyVegetarians beware.
We notified staff that I was a vegetarian weeks ahead of time (during our reservation), but staff asked again when we got there about dietary restrictions, as if they didn't know. When I said I was a vegetarian, they said they could accommodate me with a specially made entree -- only for that entree to be a few braised carrots with sauce. Given what I paid, it was borderline insulting to receive an entree that was so lacking in substance. My friends' entrees had protein, carbs, fat -- while mine was like a SNL skit of a fine dining restaurant. Moreover, the dish was unbalanced (overly sweet) and the carrots were undercooked. I contacted the restaurant directly with my concerns but haven't heard back. Also, during service, we waited awhile for our canapes. I've been to many fine dining restaurants, and this is the first time I've been disappointed. If you can't accommodate vegetarians, just say so.

I haven't visited Gravitas since they first opened and before earning their first Michelin Star. Back then, I remember the food being good but not amazing. I came back during Restaurant Week and overall my experience was positive! The front staff offered to check in coats and immediately seat guests. The interior design is rustic and gives a more casual vibe during the day. The free bread was in the dryer side though it was still warm and came with soft butter. The appetizers were visually appealing and set the stage of what was to come. The main entrees we got, pork and fish, each had elements on the plate that blended well with the meats. In my opinion, it's been hard to find good plated desserts from michelin restaurants. The desserts we got were unfortunately just okay for me, however the flavor combinations were interesting.

I took my wife to Gravitas on Valentine's Day to celebrate how amazing she is. This is a 1 star Michelin restaurant in DC located in NE. Overall I had a great time and experience dining with them. The food was great and the service was good. In between the 4 course menu they had 2 other dishes "butternut squash soup" and bread. The soup was amazing. The first course I had was Chestnut-White Sweet Potato Velouté which was savory and had a nostalgic taste. The second course I had was Chorizo Crusted Scallops. The third course I had was Roasted Veal Tenderloin and the final course was Butterfinger. Every dish was unique and had its own feel to it. The portions were small by packed with flavor. After the meal I was satisfied. I had 1 issue with my experience. The issue I had was a time gap between the second and third course. We were waiting for upwards of 35 mins. I'm not sure why but I was not a fan. I personally do not believe the cost aligned with the food quantity but it did align with the quality. Thankful for the experience.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the last place I came for DC's Restaurant Week
This was the last place I came for DC's Restaurant Week (Winter 2024). Gravitas has been on my list for a long while but making it out to Ivy City has always made it a less desirable option. I'll start off by saying that the cocktail I got was NOT very impressive. I also tasted some of the others my friends got and thought they were just ok. I guess my expectations were set high based on how creative the ingredients sounded (infusions + more unique mixers). I will say that the cocktail prices here are par for DC so I can't complain too much, but next time I come I'll probably stick with wine. Onto the food. Everything was very, very good. I came hungry and ultimately splurged for the five course tasting menu. I'm glad I did because I would've still been hungry by the end with the three course option. I know its a tasting menu restaurant so I don't expect a big meal but portions could've been a little better or maybe some bread for the table would've been nice? I don't often go to tasting menu restaurants so I'm willing to accept this is lore of a "me" problem. Anyway, the food was all great. But I'll say that for the reputation Gravitas has I didn't feel that anything was especially memorable as a strong food memory. If you choose to dine here you'll have a good time, enjoy the ambiance, and the food will be high quality, but again, I feel like there are better places to go in DC if you're a foodie searching for unique flavors. Overall, if I come back in the future I would love to see their cocktails live up to the creativity conveyed by the menu.

We reserved a dinner for 4 people last Sunday to try the restaurant week menu but ended up doing the 5 course dish. The standouts were the pork belly (melts in your mouth), butternut squash agnolotti (ridiculously flavorful), and the chocolate torte (semi sweet, and with ice cream, it was next level). The bread they provided tasted great cause it was crunchy and also soft at the same time. Rest was okay (complimentary tuna bite with tomato bisque, Koji Cured Salmon Crudo, Duck and Escargot (blandish), Spice-Roasted Pork Tenderloin, and White Bolognese [which my cousin shared with me]). The inside has a modern decoration style, with the kitchen and chefs in view of everyone. Decent parking around the area too. Our waiter did a good job with answers to our questions and gave solid recommendations. Glad to have tried it out.

The best thing about restaurant week is sampling Michelin star restaurants at a discounted price! I took my wife here during her birthday week to try the restaurant week menu. We almost upgraded to the 5 course meal, but decided not to. The 3 course meal was good. My favorite was probably the Branzino. I think I specified birthday when making a reservation online, but we didn't get any special cake or anything for dessert like what most restaurants do. All in all, a pretty good dining experience for restaurant week.
Be the first to ReplyLoved this restaurant! We went during Restaurant Week.
Everything, from the moment you enter the building is excellent. They opened the door, took my coat, and there is a really warming fireplace in the waiting area (which I sat at while my husband parked). Service was very good, friendly, and thorough. This is not the place to get full, imo, but the food was super tasty. Would definitely go back.

Very good dinner here during restaurant week! There was 2 options either a 3 course for $65 or 5 course for $95. We went with the 5 course and I'm so happy we did! Sadly the 3rd course was a pasta course and since I'm GF I couldn't have that but they let me swap with one of the option from the first course. They first gave us bread and olives then a palate cleanser which was this amazing beet salad with shishito dressing spoon and some kind of chestnut broth which I could've drank a quart of! All of the courses were very well thought out and tasted amazing. I enjoyed the main course of the duo pork but it wasn't as spectacular as the rest. First course was salmon crudo, second course was duck and escargot, third course was tuna sashimi, fourth course was duo of pork and fifth course was chocolate torte!

Visited back after years, and all I have to say is that I walked away VERY happy. Everything at Gravitas is spectacular, from the greeting and service the minute you walk in, to the wine, to the ambiance, to the presentation and flavor of the dishes....the whole experience is great. This is probably one of my favorite tasting menus in DC. Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing! Came here for Valentine's Day and got their tasting + wine pairing. Every single dish was phenomenal, and while you may think each dish is small I promise you you will be full by the end! My favorite was the lobster tartar, wagyu, and oysters. In fact, the oysters are so good my partner who HATES oysters loved them. I will say it is on the pricier side, but we went expecting this as it is a Michelin restaurant. Definitely somewhere to go for special occasions but we will be back!I'd like to also note the service was outstanding! Each plate was explained in detail to us when they came to the table, and the sommelier was highly knowledgeable on each wine that we had. Overall a wonderful experience

Cute and romantic restaurant in Ivy City, perfect for a date night! Came here their Valentine's Day tasting menu and I was pleasantly surprised by the seafood! A little bit on the pricier side, but if you're willing to spend a little for a special occasion it's 100% worth. SERVICE: 5/5 - We were seated at 9pm and the restaurant was still PACKED, but servers were still so attentive and accommodating. We put in our order fairly quickly after being seated and wait times between courses were about 10-15 minutes. At the end of our meal, our server left us with homemade hazelnut kitkats and almond cookies!FOOD: There's probably too many dishes for me to write about, but here are notable dishes and some of my takeaways:- Any seafood dish: 5/5 - Got to try the lobster tartare, lobster tail, salmon crudo, and scallops. All fresh and seasoned well! Would high recommend getting more seafood here than meat.- Foie Gras: 5/5 - I usually don't like the texture of foie gras, but this one was phenomenal! The presentation is also so appealing. Comes out shaped like a cake. - Duck Breast: 3/5 - Probably my least favorite thing on the menu. I usually love duck, but this duck was hard to cut through and chew. It might have been the meat itself, but I could barely finish this. - Lamb Shoulder: 5/5 - Would highly recommend this dish as well! Meat was tender and well flavored with garnishes. An absolutely wonderful tasting menu! We enjoyed every single course (not so much the duck breast though) and would highly recommend visiting! Be prepared to be STUFFED!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I frequent DC area restaurants, trying various
My wife and I frequent DC area restaurants, trying various cuisines and styles. We went recently on a Friday night with a few friends. Gravitas has a warehouse chic vibe, which we liked. Wait staff was kind but very quiet. Manager was mostly attentive. We were actually surprised how empty the restaurant was on a Friday night. Cocktails were good, but overpriced. The let down: the food. The starter bread was very good. Then, it went downhill. The first course had a sunchoke pana cotta. The concept was fine, the execution was not. The pana cotta was frozen and when the scallion broth was poured over, it became a broken soup.....served with a fork. The gnocchi was flavorful, but the portion was extremely small (3-4 bites) (for a 3 course tasting menu). The short rib was.....refrigeration cold. The desserts were ok, but nothing too exciting. Then, both me and my wife were sick the next day and this was the only time we had eaten the same thing over the last few days. We were hoping for this to be better....maybe just a really off night for the team.

Don't do the chef's tasting counter--it was wildly expensive and the food was a 4/10. Nothing exciting, expensive ingredients that weren't prepared well. The sea bass dish I thought had actually gone bad on the first bite. Really really disappointed. We go to Michelin starred restaurants and tasting menus often--this should not be on your list.
Be the first to ReplyGravitas continues to impress me from to start to finish.
They serve the most unbelievably delicious food, served by the best staff, inside one of the relaxing atmospheres you will find in DC. Last nights experience was on par and maybe even the best experience yet. The food continues to be bold and inventive. Highlights have to be the short rib, hamachi and the scallops. Really all the dishes were great but those three stuck out from the rest. The team at Gravitas is second to none, just wonderful people who above and beyond to make sure you feel at home and are part of the Gravitas team. It really is hard to find better service in DC. Truly a wonderful restaurant, I have never had a negative thing to say about Gravitas. Food, service, setting, it all equals a perfect night out. Highly recommended, a must go to.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband made a reservation here for our 5 year
My husband made a reservation here for our 5 year anniversary. I usually vet places he picks out but this was a surprise. He has been wanting to try a Michelin star restaurant for a while and finally pulled the trigger and chose Gravitas. Atmosphere 3/5It's a cute middle of nowhere industrial casual chic place. Although the place was empty, we were seated right next to another couple. We could have been seated somewhere else because everyone values their personal space. I could literally hear the other couples conversation. Food: 2/5I am not sure if the menu changes seasonally but the pictures on Yelp were way more appetizing than the ones on the menu (past seasonal menu, I am guessing). The food started out strongYellow fin tuna sashimi- 10/10Winter vegetable salad- 5/10 it was pretty and portion was big Fluke and winter citrus- 5/10 my husband said it was just okay, a little too fishy Mushroom veloute- 4/10 it was rich, creamy, mushroomy. 4 small lobster pieces, one was very raw(I am 5 months pregnant). Soup was cold, portion was good but taste did not blow my mind. Squid ink cappelletti- 2/10 it was way too fishy, the dish was cold, the cappelletti was tough. It was difficult to finish. We could not order the lobster bourguignon since we don't eat baconHoney layered duck breast- 2/10. Listen listen listen.....my husband ordered this. We both understand "fancy" places cook a certain way but when I tell y'all the duck was raw....it was fully raw. No slight sear, no basting, nothing. It was straight up raw. I completely understand chefs executing their own ideas HOWEVER not everyone can eat fully raw meat. The least they can do is ask the customer if they would prefer their meat rare, medium or well done. We had to send it back for just minimal sear so my husband can eat it. Not to me mention the dish was cold.Pan seared roasted royal bass- 4/10 nothing special, dish was cold, fish was underwhelming. It was overall an underwhelming dish. My mouth was not bursting with flavor Pumpkin spice notte- 4/10 average, very filling. It was okay Coconut rice pudding- 2/10 my husband ordered the chocolate cremeux but since it had pork, it was subbed with coconut rice pudding. It was a nice gesture but the rice pudding had not flavor and was saltyOverall, had we known that we would end up spending $500 on extremely mid level food at a 1 star Michelin restaurant....I would have stopped my husband from picking this place. Call us unsophisticated but we know flavor and this menu was not giving what it was supposed be giving. Nothing unique and no dishes worth remembering. Will definitely remember the pure raw duck breast that was served and all the dishes being cold (personal pet peeve) and waste of $500 on mediocre food
Be the first to Reply5/5 for the Chef's Counter experience.
Came here on my birthday and was wowed by each dish we had. Presentation was on point, tenderness and texture were executed perfectly. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Each server had a personality that was entertaining and refreshing to converse with as they transitioned between plates. It's deep into NE DC, and I ended up adding 30 min of traffic time to my ride up - plan ahead and leave early as there's no quick way to get here.Would recommend coming here or the conservatory for a date night / special event.

Made this reservation almost one month ago to come to Gravitas on Thanksgiving eve with my sister to catch up as we both unfortunately are no longer locals. We knew it wad competitive to get a reservation however we saw that the restaurant was empty shockingly- we and another couple were the only people there which was honestly nice as we enjoyed taking pictures and enjoying the aestheticfor food we did the lunch special 3 course chef tasting menu. Started with the citrus cured mackerel - a very zesty and full of flavor dish. the sauces on the side paired well with the fish. For main course i got a fish dish and my sister got the chicken. both were full of flavor but the fish was so juicy and buttery with a great tasting sauce to pair well with itfor the dessert i got the pumpkin dessert and my sister got the chocolate dessert - the pumpkin dessert wins by a landslide with its creamy yet crunchy texture and not too sweet flavor. would definitely recommend and return as i want to do their full 5/7 course menu
Be the first to ReplyWow! We had our thanksgiving dinner here.
We didn't do the Turkey. There was a Prix Fix Menu that satisfied. I think I am ruined for life after eating the Foie Gras. It was beyond delicious and creative. The butternut squash Agnolotti with browned butter, each bite was another surprise. We had the pork and the salmon. The family style came automatically and we didn't even touch them, as we were satiated with our meals. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake and the pecan gateau. The chocolate cake was perfect and we fought over the last spoonful of the gateau. We had the wine pairings and they knew exactly what they were doing. Michelin star, well deserved.
