Awful, expensive tacos. In a city of amazing tacos, there is no excuse for you to go here and spend your money. You’d be better off going to any taco truck on the street.
Going in, I had high expectations, as the hype surround Wes Avila and Guerrilla Tacos is at a fever pitch. There’s no denying that the tacos and tostada are beautifully plated, but the tacos fell short of satiating my cravings for something deeply satisfying. I wish they had focused more on seasoning and less on the plating.
We started out with the hamachi tostada ($11), which was okay but definitely did not justify the price tag. The tostada overpowered the hamachi which was laid on the tortilla with little seasoning, and I wish the hamachi had been prepared in a way that could have brought out the flavors a bit more.
Then, the tacos came out:
Sweet Potato Taco ($4) - This is it. The most hyped, disappointing taco ever. The tortilla was falling apart. The sweet potato and feta were underwhelming. I pulled not one, but TWO sticks of thyme from my mouth while eating this taco. Both sticks were buried deep in the sweet potato, so there was no way I could have seen them and picked them out ahead of time. The flavor itself was not remarkable in anyway, certainly not enough to deserve accolades. I wish I hadn’t bought into the hype and saved myself the $4.
Baja Fried Cod Taco ($5) - Decent taco but way overpriced at $5. The toppings overwhelmed the fish, and it just felt like a sauce was missing to complete the dish.
Short Rib Taco ($5) - Good meat but also missing a finishing touch. Tortilla was not standing up to the moisture of the short rib, which just indicates a poor quality tortilla. I would have preferred Guisados to this, since they have a better tortilla and better balanced flavor for their braised meat fillings.
They’re supposed to be tacos “inspired by the city”, but I left feeling angry, hungry, and ripped off after spending $35 for two people. Would not recommend.
