Living in the suburbs, it's a bit of a drive to go to the city when you're super hungry. But we have been coming here whenever we can for 3 years. Handlebar is one of my favorite places and absolutely worth the drive. We sat at the bar, and our bartender Louis/Luis (I'm so sorry I didn't get the right spelling of your name!) was amazing as well. He was super cordial and made us feel better even while we were still feeling repercussions from the night out prior haha. We got two Nashville hot fried chicken Sandwiches with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. Their food is so amazing that I even got a Tuna Steak sandwich to go for later! The entire space in itself is so mesmerizing. There are tons of things that catch your attention on the walls. I wish I took photos- but next time I will. Thanks again Louis/Luis and Handlebar staff :)

Do you ever go to a restaurant for the first time and think, "damn, I'm so in love with this meal that I'm never going to be able to eat anything else if I come back here"? That's how I felt about the Green Meanie Sandwich (avocado, goat cheese, spinach, tomato, agave-mustard spread, MMMM!) at Handlebar. Though there are a number of other delicious-sounding options on their menu, I simply cannot choose them over this sandwich that lives on in my dreams. The smoked gouda mac was also delicious, though I think I would like to try the vegan dream mac next time. We sat inside, because it was November (yes I'm still thinking about it in March), but would love to sit outside in the beer garden next time if the weather permits. Can't wait to get back to this joint on my next visit to Chicago!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the must try vegan spots in Chicago.
Dive bar and trendy.. I have been coming here for many years, the menu is quite different from other vegan spots. And mostly importantly always had such a great experience with the staff here, so friendly and really part of the vibe and atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyGood god I love handlebar.
Anyone who lives in the area knows that handlebar is amazing. From the food to the drinks and music, this is a great place to catch up with friends. Definitely gets packed on the weekends so come early to get a seat. My favorite two dishes are the seared tuna steak sandwich and the chili mac attack. Really wish they had a second location on the north side of Chicago because it would be heavily frequented.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend showed me this place last night to try the nachos
My friend showed me this place last night to try the nachos and I was not let down. They had a ton of flavor and were pretty filling for 2 sharing a plate. The staff were nice and the overall ambience was laid back. We sat in the front but there's a ton of seating and cool wall decor. We tried the horchata ice cream which was a little grainy but worth trying for $3. The pricing is also very reasonable and our whole meal came out to $24
Be the first to ReplyHandlebar is one of my favorite spots.
Awesome drinks and vegan options. In the warmer months the patio is a vibe. My only complaint is sometimes the m service is pretty bad. I know the service industry can be taxing (I am also in it) but sometimes the vibes here are uncomfy depending on who is helping you out. Have had a fair share of off putting experience with various staff members throughout the years which is a bummer because we always tip well and try to be easy to wait on. That being said our server was really good last visit, didn't get their name but that was a nice experience.
Be the first to ReplyJust a bad experience, should have followed our 1st mind
Just a bad experience, should have followed our 1st mind and left when we couldn't get anyone to stop at our table to assist with menu's. Decent bar atmosphere, we were taken to our seats and the hostess didn't provide any info, no biggie because we assumed our waitress would do that after we realized that we only had drink menus. It felt like we were invisible because we couldn't get any of the 3 folks moving around our table to stop and acknowledge after saying "excuse me" and trying to signal with our hands. Finally we yelled over to someone at the bar for assistance. When she came over we asked about the menus and she showed us the QR code on the condiment tray, now it's very low lighting and the tray is not easy to read so we didn't see it. It would have been helpful for the hostess to advise when seating us. Now to food, great options but that food was absolutely the most bland food I've ever tasted. We ordered the fries pickles that had too much corn breading that wasn't fully cooked on a few slices but overall I'd give them a 3. We both ordered the "Fried Chix Patty Melt". Now I love a good melt, this had no fried or chix flavor, it was not even a pinch of salt or seasoning on the mushroom patty and there was no cheese for the melt. Even the grilled onions had absolutely not a bit of flavor. My hubby on took a bite, I was asking for different sauces to help mine but couldn't even finish a 1/2 slice. For the sides, hubby had fries and I ordered the smoked Gouda Mac and cheese. Fries were tasty and crispy. You can tell the mac was from a box with powdered white cheese. There was no Gouda, it was cheesy but lacked in flavor. Luckily the drinks we had, margarita and lemonade was tasty, but a Huge No on the food except the fries. Service was horrible, food tasteless and drinks decent. Hopefully if you decide to go you have a better experience. It was Soo bad I didn't get any pics and was ready to go.

We went to Handlebar to celebrate a friend's birthday with a somewhat larger group (6 top) and had a decent time. The menu is really vegetarian and vegan friendly, which is amazing! For that alone they deserve three stars. The birthday girl was vegan, so it was a great option for our group! The service left a lot to be desired. It was somewhat busy, but not packed by any means. Instead of combining tables (there were plenty open to do so), we were separated at high tops that had a bar going in between them. It worked but it certainly wasn't ideal. We just generally felt like we were a nuisance to our server. I ordered the perogies and tried bits of other dishes. They were okay, but I can't say I would ever find myself craving them. If you're a vegan or vegetarian, this place is worth checking out. Otherwise, I wouldn't find myself suggesting it.
Be the first to ReplyService was great.
Our party of 5 was sat immediately and we were greeted shortly after. The food was just okay though..

Be the first to ReplySometimes, you don't want meat.
And when you don't, Handlebar is a great option: vegan and vegetarian fare at a reasonable price in a laid-back and eclectic location? Yes, please! On a recent Sunday morning, I just decided I want it brunch. The place was packed and I waited about 30 minutes. A long wait time means that the food must be good right? Well, it was. My first time trying a beermosa: Definitely a must! And then the roasted mushroom omelet was simply delicious: Good size and flavorful. The potatoes could've used some seasoning (even a little salt and pepper), but I added hot sauce to the ketchup to satisfy my taste buds. I will definitely keep this place in rotation.
Be the first to ReplyThe owner of this business is completely unhinged.
A rude, disrespectful, loose canon. I really liked handlebar but after having an encounter with the owner I will never eat here again. Maybe lay off the cocaine owner of handlebar. As a business owner being so crazy and aggressive is not okay, especially to a woman.

We went for lunch and enjoyed the food here immensely, but the music is so loud and, frankly, distasteful to me, that I'll probably not return. I had the fried avocado tacos, and they were delicious. I wasn't sure how fried avocado would play out, but the chef(s) here obviously know what they're doing. I don't eat flour tortillas, and I asked if they had corn, and they happily substituted those out for me. I really liked the toppings; a nice very lightly pickled cabbage and a tasty tomatillo salsa that provided just a touch of heat. They give you three overstuffed tacos, and this was more than enough food for me. I got a side of black beans, and these were excellent as well. The plate came with short grain brown rice, and I should have just asked for the beans as a substitute, as I couldn't finish everything. I would say "next time", but I doubt there will be one for me. As good as the food was, I just can't deal with noise rock played at a bar scene level while I eat. I don't think it's good for digestion, as I tense up, and my partner and I couldn't hear each other speak. It's too bad, as I would return and try more of the menu.
Be the first to Reply4-5 star food but zero thought to the idea that restaurants
4-5 star food but zero thought to the idea that restaurants are part of the hospitality industry. Think about the word hospitality and tell me that you want me to feel at home, welcome and comfortable here. There's a ton of reviewers that talk about the music and I'm going to echo the sentiments that it's bar music and not restaurant appropriate. It's loud, irritating, obnoxious and just lacks basic musicality. Forget about having a conversation. It makes you wolf down your food. Is it for your customers or is it just what you like to listen to. It's too bad because I really like the menu and the food was very good. My partner had the fried avocado tacos on corn tortillas with rice and beans. The pickled cabbage was a thoughtful addition to the taco. Really nice. I had the Nashville hot chicken everyone raves about deservedly with a side of collards. The collards were hard to eat. I like mine cooked a lot longer. The taste was there but you have to cook them unless they're baby collards. These weren't. The service was friendly. It's a cool looking place. The prices fair. I can't sit through another meal there. It's ridiculous.
Be the first to ReplyMy hubby and I are both vegans and this place is a gem.
We love it! So far we've had the Nashville Hot, chili Mac and cheese, and Queso fries which were all delicious!
Be the first to ReplyBest veg/vegan place! Wow gotta give it to the Nashville
Best veg/vegan place! Wow gotta give it to the Nashville hot chicken forealllll. Hands down number one on the menu for being vegan! We tried the patty melt and it was good too but not as prominent flavoring like that nash hot chicken. Sides- friend plantains and chili bowl was flavorful too! Fried plantains is a must. Drinks- got the non alcoholic and alcoholic and they both good. Service can be slow but the food was worth the wait. Ambiance- small place so it was crowded on a Tuesday!

While searching for 'vegan' options within a radius of my neighborhood, I adored that Handlebar was ranked number one via Yelp! Being that I have had it bookmarked for some time now, it was an acceptable option for me to choose on my birthday for eats. This quote by (English actress) Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel describes my mood perfectly as of late: "You have to treat yourself. Life is too short to deprive yourself of things."Street parking is available along North Ave, but if it is a problem there is also neighborhood parking. Keep in mind that street parking is shared with other businesses along North Ave, so I recommend choosing wisely when you visit. I had no luck finding a spot along North Ave which led me to parking on N Claremont Ave nearby Ascension Saint Elizabeth Hospital. From its dim-lit appearance inside to its music being played, the character of this casual contemporary restaurant felt grunge-like, yet welcoming! Russell, the server who took care of me acknowledged me as soon as I sat within the bar area which was one of the few seating options available at the time. I got a kick out of sitting on one of the lower bar stools at the bar which had me chest level to the bar table, hehe.Russell gave me a laminated card, with a barcode on it that I had to scan in order to get to the menu. I ended up ordering the Sloppy Joe Sandwich w/ Sesame Broccoli as my side option, and a Grapefruit Juice as my drink. The Sloppy Joe Sandwich is topped with carne de soya, tangy BBQ sauce, creamy cabbage slaw inside of a brioche bun. Likely on a different date, I would love to order either the Buffalo 'Chicken' Wrap, a Grilled Cheese, or the Fried 'Chicken' Patty Melt. My food was ready within minutes from the time I ordered it. Minutes after Russell brought me my food, he checked on me confirming if I needed anything else. I have to say that I felt valued as a customer from the time I sat down at the bar to the time I requested my receipt from the cashier, Ken. I cannot complain about the appearance of the Sloppy Joe Sandwich w/ Sesame Broccoli, as well as its taste! I enjoyed each bite from the initial to the last with the biggest smirk on my face after finishing it, * chef's kiss *.As a whole, I had a satisfying ordering experience with Handlebar. Likely, with it being near my job, as well as close to me on the west-side of Chicago, I am quite positive I will order from again definitely! Not bad, Handlebar! ~Blessings~ Thomas G

100% my favorite vegan fast food spot in Chicago! Definitely recommend the Nashville hot! I am no longer vegan but was vegan for many years of my life. I just started eating fish recently and I'm looking forward to trying the pescatarian options on their menu. I have had their vegan Mac and cheese and I swear it is so freaking good! I am not one to like vegan cheese at all but that mac & cheese is fire!

After the first time I made it to THE Handlebar, I knew this would be a five stars for sure. That mushroom chicken sandwich is one of the best things I've eaten in Chicago. And the last time I went was probably the best service of my life and it was so rockin' that my fiancé and I were having simultaneous orgasms. Okay, not actually full blown orgasms, but it was a great experience. Weirdly, it wasn't even that busy, just so loud because they were blasting black sabbath and people had to scream to hear each other (it was 5pm). The loudness was also impacting because we wanted the server to notice we were in full effin' orgasms. And I am SCREAMER believe me. But again, fantastic food. What are you gonna do.

Last night, I bhad the vegan "fried chicken" melt, and my brother had a tofu bowl. We were both still talking about it this morning. Previously had the Nashville and it's delish too. Makes plant based eating really easy and enjoyable

Great place to go for some vegetarian bites! Their hot "chicken" wrap is my absolute favorite. Good drinks and friendly service. They are often a bit busy so this is not a place to go if you are in a rush. But if you have time and it is a good weather day I highly suggest sitting on their patio- such a cool fun place to sit and eat. A little escape from the city. This was one of the first places I tried when moving to the neighborhood and I have loved it ever time I go!

I wanted to update that I feel the noise level has gotten much better here! Also, the patio is so great, especially as COVID continues to be an issue. I appreciate how safe Handlebar has been. Also, their Thanksgiving foods are excellent. We still always get the sambal tofu or peanut stew, but it's nice that they have so many options. My kiddo loves their nachos, too.
