Knowing this place comes from the team behind Thip Khao, it can't be bad. It's a bar so the food menu is more limited. The space is limited compared to other restaurants in DC but the vibe and décor are cool. All the drinks we've tried are unique and delicious - mostly sweet and fruity but strong, and come in cute glasses (including a storm trooper helmet). Of course you have to get the Naem Khao (crispy rice salad). It looked identical to the one at Thip Khao with the addition of sausage, pretty good but not as spicy and flavorful (Thip Khao ftw!). Tapioca dumplings (Sakoo Yadsai) and shrimp chips are both delicious and have unique texture and flavor profiles. But the salad is still my top 1 appetizer/small plate. The two entrees I've had were very good. Massaman curry was rich, had a nice kick. The chicken skewers came with a delicious sweet glaze and sour dipping sauce, and a little bucket of coconut sticky rice. Thip Khao is still my favorite Laotian restaurant in town, but I'd drop by again if I'm in the mood for some fancy drinks and don't feel like going all the way to Columbia Heights.

An excellent experience, especially in the winter with Hanumanh's hearty soups and curries! While Hanumanh is a bit cramped with the number of seats in a small place, the ambiance is fantastic, with colorful murals on the wall, unique light fixture designs, and an aesthetically pleasing bar. Additionally, it is easy to have a conversation despite the small space. Hanumanh regularly changes its menu, so your options may look different. My friend and I had a 7:45 reservation and were seated five minutes early at the bar, even on a busy evening. Other than my friend's main coming out a few minutes after mine, Hanumanh's service was outstanding. Our server was attentive without being pushy, refilling our waters and inquiring about my friend's dish status without us asking, giving us detailed and excellent dish recommendations based on our menu questions and mood, and bringing/settling the check in a timely manner. Our server also let us know that Hanumanh included gratuity in the check before swiping my card, which I appreciated. Our dishes also came out in a timely manner, even with my friend's dish coming out after mine. This service level was very worthy of our gratuity!Everything we ordered was outstanding. We started off by ordering the Hanumanh cocktail, served in a fun cup shown below. I don't normally order sweet cocktails and this one is unique and worth it. I loved the use of banana-infused bourbon, multiple fruit flavors, and vanilla, capped off by a delicious baking space aftertaste. I only wish there had been more of it at the $18 price, as there were only about five sips worth of drink, with the rest being ice.My friend and I split the Sakoo Yadsai, which are tapioca dumplings with preserved radish & peanut caramel, cilantro, and sliced peppers, served with lettuce wrappers. Neither of us had tried anything like it before and we loved this well-balanced, gluten-free dish. The tapioca balls were soft and chewy without being gummy, the peanuts provided a nice crunch, the cilantro was an excellent fresh element, and the peppers brought a complementing heat. My friend got the Masaman Curry with tofu and I got the Puu. They were both delicious, full of flavor variety, spice, and heat. I asked for my Puu spicier than normal and was very pleased with the level-intense but not overwhelming the dish. I especially appreciated the amount of crab within the curry, as I've been places that charge high prices for small crab amounts. My puu also had a good noodle-to-curry ratio, allowing me to enjoy all of the richness the dish offered.Overall, Hanumanh reasonably prices its dishes for what we got food- and portion-wise. I highly recommend trying Hanumanh, especially for adventurous eaters!

I'm not a big fan of Thip Khao - I know fighting words - so I wasn't expecting much from Hanumanh, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a cute little restaurant, with no fuss. The cocktails were fun, and everything we ordered on the menu was delicious. we had a big group so we were able to sample several things and all were amazing. Will def be back!

Really glad I made it to Hanumanh finally!Following what another reviewer said, would think of this as cocktail bar with good food, not a full restaurant, and it's great for that. Small cocktail list but very good. Tapioca dumplings, banana leaf salad, and curry noodles were all good, but in that order. Curry noodles needed a bit more sauce to bring out the flavor, never really understood why restaurants skimp on that. Would definitely go back to try more of the drinks and a couple more dishes.

I came here with a friend on a Friday night, where we start at high-top tables. The night started off a bit sparse, but by our entree serving it had picked-up with patrons both eating and drinking. Calm vibe, with modern Western music and pleasant wall decor (although the Star Wars storm troopers were an interesting touch). While I enjoyed my experience a lot, it took me a bit to place a rating to this. But I'll get back to this. The cocktail I had, the house one, was great - definitely quite sweet but still with a kick. It went down way too quick though, and I wish I had more time at the restaurant to try additional cocktails. The vibe and expertise definitely is that of a modern cocktail lounge, so this did not surprise me.To start us off, we got two sets of dumplings - the Tapioca and the Chicken/Pork combo. The Chicken/Pork were OK - nothing special and a bit disappointing. But the Tapioca Dumplings though... PHENOMENAL. Flavors burst from the dish and was very savory. I don't fully know what tapioca tastes like, but it didn't matter at all - highly recommend this to everyone.Given that previous dish experience, I was a bit disappointed that my noodle curry dish that I got with Pork Belly did not burst with flavor. It was certainly solid, but felt spice-less and a bit dull compared to the complexities of the cocktail and dumplings. As a cocktail bar with small plate appetizers, this place deserves 5-stars. As a restaurant serving dinner, I'd unfortunately give it a 3. Thus, as a compromise, I will rate it a 4 with the following caveat - come for pre-dinner drinks or a great late night experience, but perhaps check out some other areas nearby for dinner.
Be the first to ReplyI was honestly impressed by this little spot.
I've enjoyed this group's other restaurants but often don't feel like trekking to them so it's nice that this is closer. The tapioca dumplings and duck laab gai were the highlights of the meal. The duck was very "herbaceous" as my husband put it - with tons of flavor. Their cocktails are also very good. They don't use any dairy and can accommodate gluten sensitivities. We ordered a curry noodle dish and they messed it up, made a new one, and then didn't charge us! Very nice gesture.

Lao food needs more shine!Hanumanh is one of many of Chef Seng's restaurants and I'd say this one is the most aesthetically pleasing. All the wall art and ornaments dedicated to the Monkey King is so cool. I've only had the Jaew Chicken Wings here, but I loved it. I think I may have had all the Lao Chicken wings from Chef Seng's establishments and they never disappointed. Also shout out to Al Thompson for whipping some of the best drinks in the District. Can't wait to try more dishes from Hanumanh.

Gave this a try because I have tried a few Laos spots around the area. The food listed on the menu was limited and didn't have the staple Lao food you would expect especially if you are Laos looking to get some Lao food. The food tasted more like Chinese. The decor was nice and the service was great. I don't think I would come here again. Better off going to their sister company where I can actually taste the fermented fish sauce and smell it.
Be the first to ReplyFood is great.
Flavorful, makes you want to get every last drop from the plate. By now we tried many things (menu changes pretty regularly). I'm in love with two salads they usually carry. I type it, and my mouth waters. Also something rare to find in DC - reasonable prices.Cute patio tucked away and a very friendly team make it a true gem.

Updated review for the restaurant after their reopening in 2022. The food is delicious and comes quickly, drinks are amazing. Menu isn't huge, but everything on there is great - we've tried all of the recent dishes and favorites/standouts are the tapioca dumplings, wings, beef curry, and banana blossom salad. Service is quick, they take reservations (recommended especially if you want to sit on the back patio).
