Third time coming here, first two were great, this time was made uncomfortable by the waitress. In addition to being very pushy (with food AND alcohol), she sounded like a used car salesman talking about specials she thinks, "are a good price" or "a good deal." It was tacky and made the dining experience awkward. It's a shame because the sushi was delicious and the restaurant is nicely decorated.

5/5) - I got the Maki Three which with eel, salmon, and California - Got the shishito peopers, seaweed, green salad to share and found all three to be pretty yummy - Portion sizes were pretty good to decent! I was worried that I wouldn't be full, but I would say I was satiated - I enjoyed the rolls I got and definitely a step up from the cheaper places I usually go to Service (5/5) - Our server was very attentive and friendly Ambiance (5/5) - We sat on the lower level which felt more intimate and had less folks around - Great for catching up with friends or celebrating

Been going for years. Love this place!!! Quality is always on point as well as service

Each of their dishes was prepared with expertise and care. The service was friendly and efficient. The organization of the menu made ordering easy, whether you're a sushi aficionado or a beginner, and the wait staff was readily available for any questions. Total price for our dinner was reasonable for the high quality of the fare and overall experience.
Be the first to ReplyThe service here is traditional and top notch.
Friendly and pretty quick. We got the box of dreams sushi and another sushi entree. Fish was fresh, although rice was not as flavorful as other sushi restaurants I have been to. Recommend for photo ops and service while around 5th avenue.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the OG sushi restaurants in NYC.
There is a lot of history to this restaurant. It was opened in early 80's and one of the first real Japanese high end sushi that started it the trend of high end sushi joints in my and US. No, it's not what it used to be as there are many fancier places with better decor these days. But for no nonsense fresh fish prepared with much care, Hatsuhana can't be beat. I go here because quality is always consistent and you can actually get a reservation relatively easily. Maybe for a fancy date night try one of the fancier places. But this place is perfect for a business lunch or dinner. Or a casual night on the town with friends.

Went because of the convenient location for the rock center tree. Definitely not as good as it used to be (decades ago), wouldn't return.

Craving authentic Japanese cuisine in the heart of Midtown? Look no further than Hatsuhana. This hidden gem offers a tranquil escape from the city's buzz, transporting you to a serene Japanese atmosphere. The star of the show is undoubtedly the sushi. The fishes were incredibly fresh, practically melting in your mouth with each bite. But Hatsuhana goes beyond the food. The service is exceptional, with the staff treating you warmly from the start. Their knowledge of the menu is impressive, and they're happy to guide you through their specialties. A word to the wise: reservations are recommended, especially for lunch as this place gets packed! They also have a short break in the mid-afternoon to prepare for dinner service, so avoid late lunches. For a taste of their offerings, consider the Box of Dreams or Box of Fantasies. Both were beautifully presented, featuring a variety of sashimi and other seafood delights. Be prepared for Midtown pricing, but the quality and experience justify the cost. In short, Hatsuhana is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates fresh sushi and authentic Japanese hospitality. It's perfect for a romantic date or a nice business lunch.
Be the first to ReplyService was ok but food was disappointingly below average.
Ordered the sushi deluxe for lunch but the rice was poorly seasoned and lacked good flavor. The seasoning of the rice for nigiri sushi is critical and is paramount for a sushi restaurant. I don't think I would be going back. Unfortunately it is very different from the original Hatsuhana.

Last minute visit without a reservation but the gentleman at the check-in counter was able to seat me at the sushi bar. Food was good (ordered the Box of Dreams) but I thought the service was even better. The wait staff was very attentive. The place was busy but it never felt packed or noisy. Hope to visit next time I'm in town!

Nice Sashimi and sushi. And the restaurant is comparatively quite. You will be able to have a good conversation during dinner.
Be the first to ReplyGreat sushi spot.
Excellent service. Enjoyable decor. The chirashi was fresh. The rice was well balanced, deeply and delicately flavored. In fact, it might have been the most flavorful sushi rice I've had in a very long time.

Amazing sushi and sashimi! The fish is so fresh and everything has such amazing flavor profiles. I got one of the boxes and I was blown away by the variety, taste, and freshness. A huge plus is that they use FRESH wasabi. And their service is fantastic. 10/10 would come again.

I went to politely ask if they can accommodate a party of 5 last Friday evening . The host publicly humiliated me in front of the other guests waiting. He said "absolutely not!" while other guest gave a look a shock as well as the gross customer service given to me.

Presentation was beautiful we got the special box of treasure which is fancier version of box of dreams as well as sushi and sashimi combo! Service was also great staff was very attentive! Even finished up with a complimentary tea! We sat on the second level was very cozy but also pretty quiet. Good quality and enjoy the king salmon and yuzu sauce!
Be the first to ReplyHatsuhana is a bit of a storied name in my household.
Our favorite sushi chef in Chicago, who is the source of my love for sushi and pretty much the only chef we visited throughout my entire childhood, trained at Hatsuhana before coming to Chicago and starting his own restaurant (Kuni's). My dad knew him in NYC before he came to Chicago, because he'd visit Hatsuhana on business trips. It never occurred to me to visit Hatsuhana on my own business trips until recently. I figured that a restaurant that was good in the late 70's was probably either closed or outshone by others. But I organically came across its name mentioned in a thread about the best chirashi bowls in the city, and decided to try it for takeout last night. I know takeout isn't the best way to eat sushi, but it was snowing, and on their website, they tout their takeout and how it's packaged to mantain freshness and presentation, so I figured I'd test it out. They do package the bowl beautifully - squinting, it almost looks like a lacquered box. They provide you with a tray, soy sauce, and wasabi as well.I'd describe the chirashi here as... old-school. In a good way. It's how you find it in those traditional, no frills sushi shops in Japan that don't make a big deal out of themselves but are still better than 99% of the shops in the states. There is a lot of precision in the slicing - no connective tissue surprises to be found. There aren't any fancy flourishes or experimental sauces - no yuzu, chili oil, searing, etc. It's just very, very well prepared fish on rice that's exquisitely well balanced with enough chunks of kanpyo to break it up, but not enough to over-pickle the taste buds. Maguro, usually my least favorite cut, was almost as melty as toro here, and the hamachi cut with the deep pink edging intact, just like I like it.My fifth star is withheld because of the uni. Uni is where many sushi bars falter, and here was no exception. At least it was decent, not inedible like it sometimes can be, but it wasn't up to par with the rest of it. Given that uni is most of the reason my chirashi bowl was called 'special' instead of standard, I'd probably just order the standard one next time.
Be the first to ReplyI came for lunch.
Reservation was made by my company. I was told it's a little tricky to get a reservation during the lunch hour. Ordered the sushi lunch "nami" special which includes 5 piece sushi and 2 rolls. Served with miso soup or salad. The miso soup was very good. Sushi was extremely fresh. Had the spicy tuna roll and California as my 2 rolls. Not sure what kind of sushi the 5 pieces were. But I enjoyed
Be the first to ReplyGot a reservation here for a Thursday evening.
They have free coat check, which is always a plus. The space has a downstairs and upstairs area, which honestly makes good use of space. To drink, I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc which was lovely! To eat, we shared yellowtail jalapeรฑo (which is so fresh!) and tempura (not as memorable but still good quality. Probably wouldn't get it again). For my main entree, I got the sushi and sashimi combo. The quality of the fish was incredible, and for me, the highlight was definitely the scallop and otoro. Such a clean flavor and incredibly buttery texture. I also felt the price point this set was reasonable given the quality.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing quality sushi and my go-to spot for takeout.
I haven't been to the restaurant but i get takeout from here pretty frequently. I always get the Sushi Special box with 10 pieces of nigiri and a rolll. I love the nigiri. It's so filling too. They package it nicely for takeout. My one complaint is that delivery often takes long to come even if I'm really closeby.

It was a Wednesday night and i walked into Hatsuhana without a reservation. The place was packed but I did not want to give up hope for seat at the bar. The manager was so kind and sat us down at the sushi bar. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the food - it was fresh and the fish was melting in my mouth. The chef took great care of us - kindly sharing story of the restaurant and their relentless focus on customer and customer experience. I can't wait to be back - next time with a reservation!

Got the sushi and a salmon hand roll. Sushi has 7 pieces and a roll. Excellent and so reasonably priced. Staff is friendly. Added to my rotation.
Be the first to ReplyNO! Stay away.
This was one of my very favorite restaurants for more than thirty years. Ownership has clearly changed since the start of the pandemic, and everything that was once special about it is gone. While the fish is still fresh for the most part, the flavor combinations are clumsy and amateurish. Omakase now means slapping some soggy grated radish soaked in a sauce onto the top of what would otherwise be a good piece of fish. The service is also sub-par. We ordered a sashimi appetizer the moment we sat down. We got it forty minutes later. I'm sad about the loss of this onetime jewel. Now it's a restaurant no better than something you'd expect to find in any midsize city in America.
Be the first to ReplyWe came for dinner on a Tuesday night with a reservation
We came for dinner on a Tuesday night with a reservation and were led straight to our table in the back of the restaurant. It likes very quaint but the servers were very helpful. The fish is super fresh and the whole experience was wonderful. We got the special miso soup as a starter and it was so good, kind of more smoky ย than regular miso. We wanted to try the box of frames and their rolls so they brought out the rolls as an appetizer. We got the eel, yellowtail scallion, and the spicy tuna rolls. My favorite was the yellowtail scallion it was perfectly balanced And I could honestly have three rolls of just ย that. The box of dreams: beautiful and delicious. Don't be deceived, by the beautiful presentation, the box of dreams is very filling with perfectly balanced combinations of fish and flavors. I was pleasantly surprised to find Uni and toro in the box, definitely worth it!For dessert, the green tea dessert with red bean and mocha was a nice way to close our meal. The green tea ice cream was so creamy and delicious.

Prices are fantastic for the quality you get and service is always spectacular. Adding some photos below of their most famous item, Box of Dreams, and my personal favorite, Salmon Mother and Child Donburi
Be the first to ReplyI stopped by here last night and got the Box of Dreams mini
I stopped by here last night and got the Box of Dreams mini with hatsuhana picklist. Shrimp, Octopus, Squid, Fluke, Tuna.Atmosphere: It wasn't too loud, it wasn't super quiet but wasn't super loud. It was just ok. Make sure you make a reservation because they are packed.Service: The service was super friendly, the waitress was nice and helpful. Definitely a pleasant experience.Food: All of the food tasted fresh and high quality. The presentation of the food was very beautiful. Really good food all around.Price: it was definitely a little pricey and you will probably go home still a little hungry, it's definitely one of those cases where you are more paying for the experience than for the food itself. But it's definitely worth it.Overall: if you like Sushi, especially the Nigiri or Sashimi versions. This place is worth checking out, just make sure to make a reservation.
