Fantastic dining experience
We had dinner in this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is located in the beautiful Cahernane hotel and it truly is a fantastic dining experience. The food was absolutely fantastic, we had the terrine to start and it was presented and tasted beautiful and the beef and scallops as main and they were divine. As dessert we had the panna cotta and parfait which finished the dinner on a fantastic note. A nice mention also for the snacks and breads that are brought before dinner and the petit four after dessert, a really nice touch. Service is second to none and worth of a fine dining but without being too pretentious. We were looked after by an Italian gentleman named Angelo who made our experience even better. Nothing was too much trouble for him and his friendliness and recommendations about wines and food really made our evening. We'll definitely be back next time we are in Ireland!
Be the first to ReplySuperb dining, and unexpected too
To put this review in some context, I'm well traveled - 49 countries - and have lived in and around New York City for 35 years. There's been a lot of good food consumed. Herbert's served us a superb dinner with several unexpected touches along the way. Two amuse bouches, one a very light goat cheese tartlet and the other a smoked mousse of trout as I recall. Both were excellent. Our main courses were venison and cod, both wonderfully prepared. Desserts were spectacular- berries pannecotta and a banana souffle with chocolate ice cream dropped into the warm souffle at the time of serving, melting into the heart of the souffle. During after dinner coffee and tea we were surprised with three objects: a tiny macaroone, a jellied berry club, and a very buttery miniature madeline. The service this evening was efficient and friendly, with just the right amount of attention to every aspect of every course. Who would have thought that the Cahernane Hotel in Killarney Ireland would have such satisfying dining? I didnt, although this lovely hotel stay had many highlights over the two days we were residents there. This is a whole hearted recommendation to the reader to seek it out on your next trip to Killarney
Be the first to ReplyGood food despite an immature waitstaff
We started our dinner by going to the cellar basement cocktail lounge, where the bartender was completely distressed. He was cussing about the lack of help and the amount of work he had to do. We ordered cocktails, but they weren’t delivered until perhaps 20 minutes later. Upstairs at the restaurant, we found the same confusion among the wait staff. At least three different staff asked us if we were ready to order. We had questions about the menu and about the wine, and it took quite a while and three or four different staff to answer those questions. One question we had was what kind of beef was included on the beef selection. Our wait person said it was “steak.“ Ultimately it turned out it was probably sirloin. We had difficulty ordering wine. Initially, we were told that all the suggested wines to accompany the beef are out of stock, but it turns out that wasn’t the case. Once we got to the food, it was surprisingly good. We really liked their bread selections. The brown bread was probably the best we have found in Ireland so far. However, the rabbit tortelloni was mushy and without much flavor, Quite a disappointment. The beef was 6 ounce pieces of sirloin that were nicely cooked. It wasn’t especially tender but it had good flavor. This was accompanied by mashed potatoes and a bordelaise sauce. We were surprised by a special dessert as it was our 50th wedding anniversary and that was quite good. Despite a very confused waitstaff, chef seems to know what he or she is doing.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dinner
We had a wonderful dinner the first evening as we stayed 4 nights. The breakfast is fantastic, they have a la carte part and buffet part. They have fresh juices made at the spot and you can order a large variety of cooked breakfast. Also the interior was very nice, large tables and comfortable chairs and great service from the staff.
Be the first to ReplyJust ok. Expensive with small portions.
Pretty limited menu - 4/5 Starters and 4/5 Mains, so limited options to choose from. They are trying very hard. Everything fresh but high prices, small portions and limited to no seasonings.

The seafood chowder is TO DIE FOR. Dinner, hospitality and drinks were wonderful, make sure to tip them! Tips are NOT included ♥️
Be the first to ReplyWonderful stop for lunch
We had heard great things about Cahernane from friends of ours who had discovered it during Covid so we used it as an excuse to stop off for lunch when passing through Killarney. There was a nice lady served us in the Cellar, the menu isn’t huge and is more snacks but my goats cheese flatbread was amazing. We walked the grounds which are beautifully maintained and got a feel for the hotel and all the little rooms off reception. We hope to stay the next time.
Be the first to ReplyModern, authentically local cuisine in a timeless setting
I wrote an extensive review of the Cahernane House Hotel with houses the Herbert Restaurant. The restaurant food was FAR above my expectations. There were a couple Michelin restaurants along our 2 week route around Ireland. I'm surprised this one isn't in the Michelin guide, too. An inspired, passionate Culinary team uses extremely fresh, authentic local ingredients to make truly memorable meals. Lots of locally caught/smoked salmon. Local lamb, beef and shellfish. I don't have enough time to do them justice in this review. But they're worth the trip. Or even better stay at the hotel for a night or two and see if you can get one of the packages which includes dinner at the Herbert!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Family Meal
My family and I had the pleasure of dining in the beautiful Herbert Restaurant in October 2021. The room itself and the views are amazing. From the moment we set foot in the hotel all the staff were very friendly and attentive. There were so many delicious menu items to chose from for both adults and kiddies including divine deserts. We cant wait to go back again!

Now this is a restaurant worth visiting. Michelin quality everywhere. So good we went a second night and we were not disappointed
Be the first to ReplyWe really liked it! The restaurant
We really liked it! The restaurant was beautifully decorated and we had a lovely table for two. The staff were very helpful providing excellent service, and what appeared like the restaurant manager checking with diners at each table insuring that everything was good, at each table, which was a nice touch. We both enjoyed our meals, nicely cooked and presented. All in all this was just a really good experience.
Be the first to ReplyDinner & Breakfast
Food is nice, served beautifully. Menu on the website is a bit outdated. Portions are quite small, but i really enjoyed smoked mash potato and cabbage served with chicken. Bread was amazing.

Great food. The buttermilk and gingerbread ice-cream was amazing with salted caramel pudding - it was superb. Really great food. Give it a try, you won't regret it!
Be the first to ReplyBest dinner in Ireland
During our stay at Cahernane, we dined in the Herbert for dinner. The food was very nicely presented and served, the seafood was delicious and perfectly prepared. This was our best meal thus far in Ireland! The manager ensured everything was to our satisfaction and that our glasses were never empty. More dining establishments could learn from this place!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service with food to match!
Took our 5 months old with us tonight. This is more of a romantic couples date type of restaurant. But they were kind to us with our loud baby. Had the beef. Husband had the lamb. Both were divine! Service was fantastic. Well priced for the quality. Highly recommend.
