Resting on its laurels
This hotel has a storied history and reputation that unfortunately has not been translated into the present day and leaves much to be desired for the cartel-like pricing scheme it practices along with its sister pink hotel down the road. On arrival I was โupgradedโ to a room with a patio, however this didnโt really feel like an upgrade as the patio was next to the street and the service entrance and the rooms have no sound proofing, so all you hear is traffic and big trucks coming in and out and being unloaded and banged around all day and night. Made it hard to sleep despite a very comfortable bed. The house across the street can see right in, so itโs not exactly private either, and the plants on my patio were also dead, really made for a nice atmosphere. Breakfast the next morning was equally disappointing. For $107, I received an unmixed ginger shot, a lukewarm omelet and a completely melted aรงaรญ bowl that presented at best like fruit soup. I left afterwards to work out and go for a hike and put the maid light on when I left. Came back three hours later, no maid service. Called and requested, never came. After another hour, I went to the front desk and requested it again in person, still never came. Next I wanted to try the high tea that they have been promoting on their social media, so I went to the restaurant at 3pm (tea time) and asked to do the high tea. I was told it was impossible that they were already booked, and I needed a reservation in advance. If thatโs the case, why wouldnโt you anticipate your guestsโ needs and tell them this at check in or maybe offer to make a reservation for them upon arrival? Naturally I was disappointed, so I asked instead to just have lunch, and the host refused to seat me saying they were full (all tables empty except 2) and that they were closing soon, and coldly told me to go order room service or sit in the bar and walked away. I have never stayed at a five star hotel that closes its dining facilities in the middle of the day (especially on the weekend!), nor do I appreciate being dismissed by the help. The bar is a dark cave and only has things like chips or French fries on the menu, and at 3pm when the sun is shining, the last place you want to be is in a windowless room hunched over over a low coffee table eating French fries for lunch. So I was left to go back to my room, tail between my legs, order room service and eat a cold chicken sandwich alone like a recluse, and of course, thatโs when the maid finally decided to show up, so at least I had lunch company. Iโll also note I had originally planned to stay only one night but decided to extend my trip, and in retrospect, I really regret it. Iโm aware that America isnโt exactly known to have high service standards, but even so, the only way I would ever even remotely consider returning is if there were a change in management, because Dorchester clearly has no idea what theyโre doing and itโs shocking to me that this hotel received three Michelin keys.

We had always wanted to stay at the Bel Air hotel and we were absolutely delighted with our experience from the moment we arrived until our departure. The team on site were incredible and so friendly and helpful. They ensured that we had the best time whilst we were there. The accommodation was amazing and the service and food in the restaurant were fantastic. The Bel Air and the team did not disappoint, a special thanks to Lucinda in the restaurant and Tavi for looking after us but to all the staff for making our stay so memorable! Thank you guys!

For me, not being in the center of town and having a quiet surrounding is what I like the most. And the garden is also a feature that I like very much, which puts people in the tropical woods! I think I will definitely stay here again next time I come to Los Angeles

First time staying here and blown away. From checkin- front desk was super helpful and welcoming making sure we got settled properly which was much appreciated- TC was awesome. Reception area was super posh with fireplace etc. Room was elegant and comfortable with big windows nice bathroom etc. kids loved the tv in the bathtub. Pool was beautiful loved the swan floats and pool staff were lovely and beyond accommodating. Thanks Hannah! Loved just walking the grounds which were California jungle chic. I am so happy they preserved the old world glamor of this hotel, in the best, most modern way. The restaurant is such a special indoor- outdoor setting with booths and trees and fountains. We loved eating here. Kids liked being able to spend time with both parents in a relaxed setting. All in all a great stay and look forward to returning to this special spot solo or with friends.

We stayed at the Bel-Air on a layover to Hawaii for 2 nights. It is perfect for access (via taxi) to the Beverly Hills area. Normally the hotel will drop you off, but it was not running every day of the week when we visited. You can't easily walk anywhere from the hotel, but they offer free coffee in reception from early in the morning. The grounds are lovely and tranquil. The bar and restaurant are great places to relax, as is the secluded pool. The room (372) was a very good size with really high quality toiletries.

This was my first stay at Hotel Bel-Air and it is now my preferred hotel in LA. The sense of privacy and relaxation is unparalleled in the city, and the quality of all of the offerings -- from the amazing bar, to incredible poolside service makes for a restorative stay no matter your reason for visiting. The hotel is on a 12-acre piece of land tucked away in a valley in Bel Air, yet is a short drive from Beverly Hills, Westwood and (by LA standards) Santa Monica. I booked a Deluxe Room but was upgraded upon arrival and am not sure what room category I stayed in. Needless to say, the rooms are lovely. The bed was plush, the desk and seating area were comfortable and stylish and all of the technology in the room worked well. The bathrooms have mosaic tile details, large tubs, Japanese toilets and waterfall showers. I was on the second floor and had lots of natural light in all rooms. It was a pleasure enjoying the restaurant, bar, pool and spa which are all a short walk from each other separated by immaculate landscaping. The gym was compact but well stocked with water, chilled towels, fruit and new Technogym equipment. I never saw more than one other person using the facilities while I was there. The gym is right above the spa so it was easy to use the steam room after workouts as well. All of the food I enjoyed on property, whether it was room service, at the restaurant, pool or even a few snacks at the bar was excellent. The bar especially deserves a shoutout -- it is a wonderful place with perfectly crafted drinks and live music every night. Well worth a trip even if you are not staying at the hotel. There is a house car that took us to an event on Sunset one day and was also available to go to Beverly Hills Hotel (where Hotel Bel Air guests have signing privileges) if needed. It was a really smooth experience and a great feature of the hotel. There were a few service missteps -- room service food arrived much later than the quoted time, a requested item never made it to the room etc., but otherwise was great. The arrival and departure experience and service in the restaurant and bar were absolutely stellar. I will definitely be back on my next trip to LA (and am counting down the days)!

Amazing customer service with Sparkle at the Hotel Bel-Air's restaurant! Sparkle helped make our celebration lunch on Feb. 25th so special and memorable. She was so thoughtful and dedicated to ensuring our day was special. She was able to acoomodate changed plans due to the hail storm and made it look effortless! Look forward to many more special events at the hotel and restaurant! -- Jocelyn P
Be the first to ReplyAlmost wonderful. Almost.
Myself and my husband came for four nights over Christmas. The pros; The staff that greeted us were pleasant and professional. We were also upgraded upon arrival which was appreciated. Our spa treatments were excellent. The spa itself couldโve had more amenities such as couples hot tub, couples steam room etc but overall the services and team were excellent. Pool side service was also great and the food menu was nice. Drinks in the piano bar were fantastic and the grounds throughout are beautiful and extremely well kept. The cons; for the nightly rate one would expect parking to be complimentary. Housekeeping was subpar at best. Breakfast was hit and miss and expensive for what was provided. Room service food was way below average and Christmas Day dinner was close to inedible. That said the hotels response to our concerns, especially around housekeeping which we provided pictures of, was swift and professionally handled and their gesture was greatly appreciated. It gave me confidence to rebook and revisit and hopefully after that we can chalk our dec trip down to the holidays and all that goes with that and see the hotel for all its glory.

In an era where a lot of hotels have lost their personal touch and excellent service post-pandemic, hotel Bel Air has bucked that trend and upped the ante. We were upgraded upon arrival for our Christmas stay to the Grand Suite which was spacious and perfect for our two dogs with a private and enclosed patio and garden space. There were special Christmas treats both for us and our two year old son. Unlike some many other luxury hotels that have weirdly and inexplicably raised pet fees to hundreds of dollars, bel air hotel has kept their rates a very reasonable $ 35 per night. The grounds are gorgeous and immaculate. The hotel is quiet yet very close to most of what one would want to see on the west side and Beverly Hills. My only two gripes are the room service which is consistently awful and the fact there is no hot tub on the grounds. But given the amazing service and treatment, this will be our default hotel in the area moving forward.
Be the first to ReplyChloe was an amazing server, will come back because of her!
We stopped by for a drink during the holidays and Chloe was the best service - even making sure the lamb wasnโt โgameyโ enough for me and making sure all of my food allergies wouldnโt be a worry to me. She was so attentive despite a busy room, and she made sure everything was perfect for us. I will always return some place if they have the best service. We recommend getting the penicillin and egg nog cocktail!

As a frequent visitor to LA, I've long heard of the hotel's reputation and storied past. As a treat to celebrate our first vacation in three years and missed twentieth anniversary trip due to the pandemic, we decided to upgrade our typical hotel stay by booking at the Bel-Air. In was unlike any previous hotel stay I've experienced. The highlight was that the service was top notch at every level. Everything from the personalized check-in, the valet service, restaurant staff, and housekeeping were incredible. The grounds of the hotel were superb, retaining the historical nature of the hotel. Our room were beautiful, modern, and quiet. Many times during the walk to and from our room, we didn't see any other guests. During our stay, there were always plenty of lounges by the pool and never a crowd. The hotel bar at night, especially on the weekend, was hip and featured a pianist or combo. Downsides? Not many. The fitness area was small, but during our three-day stay, I never saw anyone in there other than myself. And the Uber rides to West Hollywood or Beverly Hills were a little pricy at times, but hey, that's LA and nothing to do with the hotel. Would I stay there again? You bet. Hopefully, that will happen sometime soon.

Stayed here on a weekend in March for a birthday trip with some friends. Upon arrival, we went to the front desk for check-in and the manager told us that it was Academy Awards weekend and that there were celebrities staying in the hotel. Then, he went on to say that they will be watching us on the security cameras and if they see us approach a celebrity, they will take us to court and prosecute us. What?!?! Anyway, the rest of the stay was fine but the remarks from the manager upon arrival were just unbelievable.

Utterly spectacular..... Its been a few years since we have stayed but the Hotel Bel-Air is more than a hotel, it's a paradise in Los Angels. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you are immersed in the ultimate hospitality and luxury. Staff care and make every attempt to make you feel special... I cannot comment highly enough about the culture at this hotel amongst all staff. We have not stayed 2 weeks in a hotel for years and this is the ultimate hotel to make your second home..... From the gardeners to the housekeeping staff every member of their team cares and remembers who you are! Hannah by the pool was a true star..... This is a special hotel managed by special people who value and care about their guests and staff alike.... There is nothing like The Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and this has to be your only choice as you will never stay anywhere else after...... Thank you to the entire team for being so special.

Recently spent a long weekend here and enjoyed it immensely. Service is very, very good with the staff being willing and able to accommodate all kinds of different needs. For example, my stylist was meeting myself and my cousin here to outfit us for a trip this summer and the hotel neatly rolled in over five racks of clothes and didn't give it a second thought! They were great with my dog too - he received a lot of attention here. Visited the spa and had a pedicure with a friend, which was great and the pool is nice too - very collegial community around the pool. All-in-all a wonderful property in a very nice location. Would stay again.

I worked for an upscale/luxury hotel chain for many years and now I can unequivocally say that the Hotel Bel Air is my favorite hotel anywhere. We were on our honeymoon traveling from the East Coast and stopped there for 24 hours before heading on to Tahiti. The setting is an urban oasis with beautiful trees and plants everywhere and once you are there you completely forget that you are in the heart of West LA. The staff treated us like royalty even considering that A list celebrities and billionaires walk through their doors every day. I canโt say enough about the friendliness of the staff and in particular the concierge team went over and above on our behalf. The food and beverage is expensive, but the quality is just outstanding. The huge oval pool is just magnificent. I almost canceled our trip to Bora Bora so we could stay there all week (just kidding but it was really that good). IMO Hotel Bel Air is far and away the best place to stay in Los Angeles, bar none.

A very special place with very special people. We stayed here as we needed a rest in the sun. Everyone went above and beyond to make our stay special. Shout out to Tavi in guest relations. He is special. The staff is incredible. Warm and friendly and helpful. Space is gorgeous. A truly beautiful place. Indulgent to be sure but so worth it.

This was my first time staying at the Bel Air (I usually stay at a different LA hotel which I no longer like) and Im so disappointed I did not start staying here sooner. The layout of the hotel lends itself to privacy and serenity, and it is far less "sceney" than some of the other LA hotels, ie you wont find yourself constantly in the middle of an Instagram "photo shoot" and you can just relax. Every single person I encountered who worked here was beyond lovely- especially at the pool! And btw had the best pool food of my life here! My stay encountered a bit of a dramatic hiccup (no fault of the hotel) and it was handled with the utmost care. Was very disappointing to leave!

Please forward to manager We were there for lunch outside today a large group for a birthday and it was the worst experience We could have expected. It took a hour for the food. People received orders 20 minutes apart and waitstaff would disappear or ignore us for so long, we literally had to yell to get someoneโs attention. Did not appear to be a manager or any order. Really really bad

Outstanding property and service. Stayed here recently for a big birthday celebration for my wife. The property is unique, not a cookie cutter luxury hotel. The physical plant is old, but the rooms have been updated recently and are immaculate. The grounds are amazing, pure LA, and the rooms open directly to the outdoors. The pool is wonderful. Not a loud music party scene, but relaxed and classy. Having a Wolfgang Puck restaurant on the premises means superior eating. The breakfasts are fantastic. The French omelet is the best I've had in years. The staff was incredibly accommodating and warm. We regularly stay in luxury hotels and this is my favorite hotel in the US.

If the swans are neglected as much as the guests and the property, then Iโm afraid they donโt have long to live. Just returned from the worst hotel experience Iโve ever had in Los Angeles. I visit several times a year to see family, and usually stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I decided to switch it up this trip... BIG MISTAKE. I booked a loft room... upon check in I was offered an โ upgradeโ to a canyon suite. The suite was next to the service kitchen and above the sidewalk room service uses to go back and forth from the kitchen. I asked for my original room.. was told that was not possible. No explanation. I asked to be moved... I was shown a room next to the pool service kitchen and a room over an old service driveway. I chose the latter as it was at least quiet... the whirlpool was filthy, had cracked limestone all around it, and the sun chaise cover was threadbare. The next morning I sought a manager and met Robert, supposedly the guest relations manager. He told me he didnโt know what happened with my room but would follow up that day with an explanation. Never did. He offered 50 percent off of the room.. but I really just wanted the room I booked. Huge Jersey shore wedding there that weekend.. they completely took over the pool ... drunken loud nasty people. The pool servers and bar servers were lovely . Management is non existent. I was happy to leave.

We typically stay in a house when we travel to Los Angeles but decided to try the Hotel Bel Air. We were not disappointed. The service is impeccable. Landon at the valet is especially attentive. The in-house breakfast and lunch at Wolfgang Puck's is fantastic. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite and aside from some glitches that were immediately resolved, we were very happy. There was a good deal of space and everything was very clean. The services I received at the spa were wonderful as well. The pool, while crowded by the afternoon, is delightful. And you can order Wolfgang Puck's while you relax. We requested a personal trainer from the concierge. I would suggest you do not do this. He arrived disheveled, late, and smelling of tequila. However, the concierge did arrange our dinners and cars with no issues. I would highly recommend this hotel if you want to feel like you are at a resort in the middle of a city. I far prefer this idyll to the hotels that are right in the thick of things in Beverly Hills.
