Super rude service.
Not sure how they can run a business. If you read Google review you will notice many people (especially Asian customers) complain about their service. Waitress is likely to be a racist (even tho she's Asian herself), or she simply has no idea how to do her job.

Awesome hidden Japanese restaurant in wikiki definitely recommend. Food was very good. Some of the reviews about the service I can see. We did have to walk into the restaurant for them to seat us. If we waited outside I'm not sure if they would of done much lol. But I thought the waitress was friendly. I think this place deserves a higher star rating at least 4.5. There is a lot of other restaurants in wikiki with higher ratings that are mid. Over all if you want good authentic Japanese food this is one of my favorites on the island top 3 for sure. Really feels like a small izakaya restaurant in Japan.
Be the first to ReplyCute little izakaya place tucked behind an alley way.
This feels like an authentic Japanese izakaya place similarly to the ones that I have been to in Japan. Each dish was prepared with love and meticulously, so don't expect to be a quick meal. They only had 2 servers and probably 1 cook so it was a bit of a wait between dishes. What I enjoyed most was their menu selections. They have "rare" items such as raw octopus, eye sockets, and etc. While the portion was small but the price made up for it. For someone like me who likes to order a lot of varieties, this is a great place to be. Their cocktail drinks were pretty weak so I would stick with sake and beer next time. Lastly, their omurice was delicious. It had the right balance of flavors and not overpowered by the taste of ketchup like many others.

Izakaya in Waikiki, great food, awesome staff, and it's not stupidly pricey in a crazy tourist area. I love the interior, and it feels very much like an izakaya in Japan.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a hidden gem in Waikiki.
It's located in a super discrete location, literally in the back of an alleyway off the main road of Kūhiō Ave. The ambiance feels like a truly authentic izakaya, as if it was transported straight from Japan. You know it is a good sign when the customers are all mostly Japanese. It seems like a really simple restaurant, but they have a large selection of small plates to share and drinks to choose from. Best of all, the prices are very reasonable. My favorite of the night was the beef intestines, chicken nanban, and okonomiyaki. But fair warning, this restaurant is small and costumers tend stay long to drink (guessing that to be the izakaya culture?), so the turnover rate for a table can take quite long.

Food was ok, the amount of it was really small compared to other izakaya I have been to. The place was super noisy there was a group who was too much. The music was ok . Not Ideal place to go for a chill drink and snacks
Be the first to ReplyLegit Japanese-style izakaya.
Everything was great. The karaage, gyoza and yakitori were exactly what I would expect if I were eating at an izakaya in Tokyo.
Be the first to ReplySmall hold in the wall.
Food was good. Beer on draft. Large selection of Japanese food. Service was decently attentive. Food came out pretty fast. Nice after work place.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious but small portions and pricy.
Ordered a bunch of things omurice, chicken skewers
Be the first to ReplyMind blown! This place is pure magic hole in the wall.
Not going to write a novel, but this is my new favorite izakaya in Hawaii
Be the first to ReplyPau Hana Base is a small hole-in-the-wall.
Every time we passed by this place there were people waiting. We came later in the evening one night for drinks and a good meal. Everything we ordered was very tasty. From the grilled chicken to the beef intestines, we enjoyed it all. The drinks were flowing until we were the last table there. It is small bites (kind of like tapas), so expect to order multiple plates to share. I wouldn't come here solo. Definitely worth a try!
Be the first to ReplyCute little spot in Waikiki off Kuhio.
It's an Izakaya, so a lot of small, shareable dishes. Everything I tried was delicious! My main issue with this place is the parking - there is none! So, it's just street parking or park at a nearby garage and pay.
Be the first to ReplyFood is very delicious and well made.
But the 3 star is for the service. Both waitresses seem to be very impatient, there might also be some language barrier, also lack of willingness to communicate. We waited at outside for quite sometime to be seated while there were many open tables. We ordered beef intestines, it's very clean and tastes very good. Chicken skewer also very juice. Mayonnaise pan fry udon is too creamy. Other noodle dishes are very good. Asked if we'd like to order alcohol multiple times. But not adding water for once. I'll give 2 star if the food is not delicious.

Met a friend for drinks and we just randomly found this place to eat dinner. Cute little place, I wasn't super hungry so just ordered some stir fry mixed veggies and a bowl of ramen. The veggies were so tasty and fresh in a delicious light sauce that paired so well with my rice. And the ramen was some of the best I've had. Very reasonably priced. Service was fine, I'm looking forward to eating here again.

A special treasure we were so happy to find hidden around the corner from Aloh cafe. The food is excellent. Tip: the omurice is the best we ever had in Japan or anywhere! Reservations can be made by calling. We were able to get a table by showing up a couple minutes before they opened on a weeknight.
Be the first to ReplySuch a great little spot.
Hidden gem in Oahu!!! We come here every time. Wonderful food and reasonable prices.
Be the first to ReplyStayed a month and this was my go to spot.
I love that it's slightly hidden behind a beat up abandon building on Kūhiō and Seaside. The place is small so gets busy really quick and wait is long... so busy that I choose to eat outside but always warm in Hawaii. The food presentations, portions and taste were fine and dandy so no complaints.Don't know what else to add that others haven't.Two Shaka gestures for this little gem.Ciao Bella

" - Princess Bride There's three things you should know about me: I'll defend the less fortunate, I love a good joust, and I'll protect those that I love to the death... okay let's save my Chivalric Code for another day since it's 2023 and people are more concerned with their Gucci & iPhone. There's three things about my time at Pau Hana Base that maybe all can relate to today: good food, good company, and hey it's Gucci wallet friendly! My bestie invited me while we chatted jousting. It was perfect as I had no clue on dinner and I love a good Izakaya! I arrived about ten minutes after her party of three already ordered. Warm greetings and eyebrow waving as I enter to a cozy setup. The menu is probably the most difficult part as it's so busy with choices which is actually a good sign. Fortunately they already ordered Fried Soba, Grilled Squid, Hamachi Collar to start off as I peruse and peruse the menu. I finally decided to add Japanese Hambagu and they also added Ribeye Steak to the mix. We all shared the delicious foods but for me I loved the Hamachi Collar and Japanese Hambagu the most. A round of drinks! Kanpai! Izakaya is best experienced shared. So Arigatō to my dining partners for sharing the plates already ordered! The service friendly and bilingual and plates came out staggered as expected. Sometimes if flagging doesn't work, I found what works best, from past experiences, is to order directly at bar. Kanpai! In the end, big hugs to my bestie for including me in her dinner plans. She didn't have to, but did so anyway, and even gave me a box of chocolates! And you wonder why I'll protect her from all the evil in the world. Tho I'd fight her for that last piece of Hamachi!

Just like the name, Pau Hana base was the foundation of a great dinner and get-together with friends pau hana (after work)! My friend, Dan O., recommended myself and Li Y. check this spot out since he enjoys coming here. All three of us plus Eric R. joined! Thanks to them we came for an early dinner! Normally I don't venture into Waikiki, but this hole-in-the-wall izakaya was well worth it!The three of us entered the izakaya right when they opened. We were greeted and seated immediately where there were several ample tables and bar seating available. The restaurant can be hard to find as it's tucked away in an alleyway. It reminded me of those small, homey, but memorable izakayas in Japan serving up savory foods at a reasonable price!Since my friend has been a few times, we all decided to order a few dishes to share. The great thing is that the plates are reasonably priced and perfect for family style. This allows you to try multiple things with others which is what we did! We ended up getting the Grilled BBQ Squid, Grilled Yellow Tail Neck (Hamachi Kama), Pan Fried Udon Noodle, Hamburg Steak, and Ribeye Steak. My favorite dish was the hamachi kama. It was lightly grilled, the skin was crispy (my favorite part), and the fish was tender and mild. I also enjoyed the udon which came with vegetables, squid, pork, and bonito flakes. Savory taste, crunchy toppings, and chewy noodles--yum! Everyone seemed to enjoy the dishes which is a plus in our books! The presentation was laid out nicely and perfect for us to divide and share. The service was attentive but it did take some time for our items to come out.In the heart of Waikiki, you can find Pau Hana Base--a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist crowds. It's a couple of doors down from Zigu. Parking is street only which can be hard to come across in Waikiki so parking structures, walking on foot, taking the bus, or carpooling is recommended! Come for the reasonably priced tasty food and stay for the unique atmosphere! It's a great place to come with friends, families, and small and large parties. Thank you Dan O. for taking us to one of your hidden treasures! I wouldn't mind coming again if I were in the area.
Be the first to ReplyEverything seems good.
Just order whatever you see fit, it won't let you down.Recommended: grilled squid, grilled squid eyes, fried chicken.

great food & staff! they seated us without a reservation which was much appreciated, would definitely book a reservation next time so we could sit inside and look at the lovely interior. 5 stars all the way!
Be the first to ReplyI highly recommend this authentic Japanese restaurant.
The food was so great and delicious. My favorites were the cheese sticks, mackerel, and I loved the seasoned bamboo shoots. I also like the Japanese fried chicken which was yummy with the mayo. The service was good too.

Talk about a cute hole in the wall- literally it's a hole in the wall. I've never had Japanese food from a restaurant that wasn't all sushi or ramen so this was a great experience since I had grown up eating some traditional Japanese dishes made by my family. We tried the spicy ground pork and tofu dish (definitely spicy), the fish cake, and some other dishes. Everything was fantastic, but I would opt for no fish flakes on the fish cake dish because it made it a little too fishy for my taste.

Great place for authentic Japanese izakaya (small plates and drinks). Fun to come with friends and share lots of plates to share. Staff and owner were very accommodating with our large group of 9 with kids. Reservation recommended for big groups. Had so much fun and enjoyed the food that forgot to take pics. Can't just recommend one plate, everything we had was good!!!
Be the first to ReplyThe best izakaya in Waikiki area.
This place remind me of Izakaya in Tokyo! Super duper authentic! If you like fish, try the grilled Mackerel and you won't be disappointed.
