Another Great Wine Tasting at JCB
Another Great Wine Tasting at JCB
In August, I walked down to the Ritz Carlton, from our hotel, the Fairmont, and primarily to stop into the JCB Tasting Lounge, in the lobby of the Ritz.
JCB is Jean-Charles Boisset, and the JCB Tasting Lounge is much more - it is a style piece, by Mr Boisset, and is termed the Jean-Charles Boisset Collection. From ornate, etched-glass decanters, and stemware, to wines, to spirits, the room is a reflection of Jean-Charles Boisset, in every way. It was also designed, and decorated by him. Eclectic is one word to describe it, with Daliesqe paintings, and various contrasting elements, it reflects on the person, their style, their tastes, but I was here to taste wines.
On this morning (they had just opened), I was the lone patron, so had the full attention of the young lady managing the tasting lounge. That gave both of us more time to talk about the wines. From my previous visit, almost two years before, the line-up had changed a bit, as JCB had acquired more wineries in California.
Now, one slight oddity, and one that I encountered before, is that nearly all of the wines are just designated by a number - not by varietal/blend, not by region, AVA or other - just a number. Lately, we have encountered several JCB wines on higher-end restaurant wine lists. Trying to remember if I liked the No3, or the No9, is a tough call. While cute, and likely a profitable marketing ploy, I am not sure that it is the most effective naming convention, for someone, who knows, and likes wines. It’s easier for me to remember the grapes used in say a Pomerol from Bordeaux, than these numbers, but that might just be me. However, all of the wines I tasted this morning were good - just some better than others.
The tasting lounge manager was very friendly, and knew her JCB products very well. We did all of the available flights, and she took the time to completely describe each wine, and knew about what I had experienced before, so was able to compare and contrast most of what was on the menu in August.
The space is small, and is filled to the brim with JCB artwork, and ornate furniture, and it’s almost like being in an exclusive antique shop, where you are afraid to touch anything. While not quite my style, but then I was there for the wines, and had a great time.
Whenever I stay on Nob Hill, even if not at the Ritz, the JCB Tasting Lounge is high on my list of “must-do” attractions.
Disappointed
The place looks fantastic but the service is so awful! We had a party of six and they did t even offered us water. We prefer our drinks and were not advice that you could only order charcuterie until six they neglected our table and made us feel unwelcome. A total disappointment.

Sandy from JCB was very friendly and the wine is aged and great! The lounge is a best place to unwind after a long business day.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding swanky bar and with great ambiance!
We made reservations here as part of my Raymond’s membership and as a prelude to my birthday. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, the wines and the staff. Sandy was very helpful and the sparkling and still wines were of outstanding quality! We found a very swanky spot in San Francisco to kickoff my birthday celebration. Thank you, JCB!

Great room for wine tasting or wine by the glass. Server was very knowledgeable. Would go back there again!

Had a lovely dinner here post check-out, prior to going to the airport. The staff was lovely and attentive during a very busy time. I especially loved the stainless steel straws. I highly recommend.

I have to start by giving a great thank you to Paul for taking such good care of us. He had so much knowledge about the wine from Napa, also in comparison to the French wines. The blind tasting was great fun, and the cheese & charcuterie you can buy from the connected store is fabulous. Paul really gave of himself, and that made the experience really nice and personal.
A must do if you like wine and are in the area.
Luxurious & Delicious!
The JCB Tasting Lounge is a must-stop if you're in the area or staying at the Ritz. The collection of wines and jewelry are STUNNING!
From the moment you walk in the room until the time you leave, you are surrounded by lush decor, wine and jewelry from one of the most innovative wine-makers in the business.
Reservations are recommended as the salon is a small space but take my advice, don't hesitate to stop by to enjoy some of the most luxurious wines that will ever cross your lips!
Salud!
Wine tasting
We left our teen agers in the Club Lounge so that we were able to enjoy a tasting of very interesting wines. We had originally planned a trip to Napa to sample wines, but due to the fires there October 2017, we had to change our plans.
This turned out to be an excellent experience. Both the wines, the interior and the level of knowledge of the staff were top notch.
A Lovely Tasting Room in the Ritz Carlton San Francisco
Before my November visit to the JCB Tasting Lounge, in the San Francisco Ritz Carlton, I was not very familiar with the Jean-Charles Boisset Collection, and really only remember the name, when they acquired De Loach Winery, from Cecil De Loach, and I am quite a “wine geek.” This was our first stay at the Ritz Carlton San Francisco, perched atop Nob Hill, and in researching the property, I noted reference to the JCB Tasting Lounge – obviously something that I needed to do. I planned to stop in, just after check-in, but before dinner on our fist night, especially as I had time, and wife would have started her meetings. Well, that was not to be, as it was closed to the public for a private function. So, the next afternoon, I was at their door, when they opened at 1:00pm, and I was prepared, after a lovely breakfast at Parallel 37.
I opted for “The Ultimate JCB.” This included:
JCB No 65, Blanc de Noirs, a lovely sparkler
JCB No 49, a Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay
JCB No 3, a Russian River/Burgundy (blend) Pinot Noir
JCB No 1, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The Surrealist, a Napa Valley blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot
In addition to those, there were just more, and more wines, which were poured:
JCB No 33, a Russian River Chardonnay
JCB No 76, a Napa Valley Chardonnay
JCB No 7, a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
JCB No 6, a Russian River Pinot Noir
JCB No 10, a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Now, the location is right in the lobby of the venerable Ritz Carlton San Francisco, immediately beside the reservations desk, and across from the hotel’s Lobby Bar. It is small, to the point of being “intimate.” The décor is “opulent,” and almost to the extreme. “Ornate” comes to mind, but then there are contrasting elements of surrealism (maybe in tribute to their Napa Cab/Petit Verdot? During my early afternoon tasting, only a few folk dropped by, and it seemed that they were there to buy retail, or just to drink. So, while small, the space was never crowded.
I only interacted with one member of the staff (I only saw two total, during my visit), and she was excellent, and very knowledgeable about wine, in general, and then the JCB Collection, in particular. Note that there are many more wines/wineries in the JCB Collection, such as Raymond Vineyards, Buena Vista Winery, and De Loach, but those were not offered, during my tasting.
They also offer some light dining, from Parallel 37, the Ritz Carlton restaurant, but I was full from breakfast, so did not even look at the menu.
This was the second “wine tasting room,” in a San Francisco hotel, that I had encountered, with the first being Château Montelena, in the Westin St Francis. Personally, I think that these are great fun, and well worth the time, and expense.
I plan to return, with my wife, even if we’re not staying at the Ritz Carlton San Francisco.
