Chef who focus on culinary skill
A lot of restaurants focus on top ingredients but the chef here focuses on culinary skill. Not so expensive ingredients taste so great because of the exceptional culinary skill of the chef. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyTradition meets innovation
A unique harmony of classic Japanese Kaiseki and European influences. Chef Takatomo Izumi from Shiga prefecture and team prepared an unforgettable meal and took the time to explain the dishes, even bringing out an iPad and magazines to provide in-depth details. Highlights include hamo with chrysanthemum pedals, barracuda with onion koji, anago with shaved chestnut, kotake mushroom rice with egg yolk. The unique sake selection paired with the course perfectly. To appreciate this restaurant is to appreciate creativity and the future of food.
Be the first to ReplyGood Kaiseki food and good services
This restaurant is difficult to book and we booked through an agent for a fee. There are only very limited count seats. Restaurant serves Kaiseki food. Food is innovative, and good but not exceptional. The tofu dish and the Jiki Wagyu were our favourites. Service was good and Chef was friendly.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful Respect
The food was excellent with delightful tastes and some aged sushi that added natural Unami the mix. I would commend Chef for his beautiful respect of fish he served. Each dish had such respect that I just shown on the plate.
All seats are on the counter, so watch the show as the meals preparation and plating is completed
well beyond excellent!
This place is well beyond excellent. I donโt have the adjectives to describe the food and the entire experience. All food is fresh, all put on the plates in front of you, and well explained by the chef. An absolute must do.
Be the first to ReplyA meal to make you feel very special!
Takamoto Izumi and his team delivered on an outstanding meal with not only the food being delicious with eat plate but also the sake pairing and helping us to learn more about the culture of the food and the background of the dishes. The ingredients used were fresh, delicious and it was so enjoyable to watch the team plate everything so elegantly right in front of you - very inclusive experience. Would absolutely recommend anyone in Kyoto to check out this restaurant (and if you can, go for the deluxe Omakase as it truly is special)!

This was booked by my concierge and I had high hopes since reviews here and elsewhere are quite good. As soon as I walked in and saw a half-full counter with nothing but non-Japanese people (like me) I was worried. And as soon as I had the first dish of octopus with peaches I knew this was going to be terrible. Almost every dish started with what I guess was fresh fish and then sauced with something fruity from squeeze bottles. The dish of a single cooked shrimp drowned in stewed tomatoes then covered with shaved tomato ice was possibly the worst dish I've had in years. The over-saucing and overcomplicating is the opposite of what I expect of Japanese food. If the ingredients were high quality they were totally put to waste. Street food is way better and way cheaper. And a good kaiseki meal is money well-spent, but isn't this.

The first dish was inedible. That is always a somewhat of a bad start...
We had thin (but not thin enough) slices of octopus, and I was not able to chew/swallow it. I nearly panicked as I was there in front of the chef, and you donโt get napkins that can hide anything, only that stupid facecloth ๐คฏ It was a dish of octopus accompanied with what seemed like (but of course was not) preserved peaches from a can. Didnโt like it at all.
All the dishes were kind of grey, and although some tasted good, and were probably high cuisine, as the very serene attitude of the chef suggested, Iโm sorry to say that I was not impressed, neither with the him nor the food.
They had employed a Malay to lighten up the atmosphere which was nice, he spoke good English. However, you come for the food, and I cannot necessarily recommend that from this expensive restaurant ๐
