What I like about this place is the service and the ambiance. However, the food while fairly priced could be warmer. The steak and fries tasted good with the right texture and seasoning, just that the steak being already precut got cold very fast. They do have tasty dessert and fine wines to match the steaks.

I'd been wanting to check out J's Steak Frites ever since it opened, mostly because I just love its gimmick of literally only serving steak frites. (The only thing you're asked is how you want your steak cooked, which is awesome.) We showed up minutes after it opened on a recent weekday and the place was already half full (and completely packed by the time we finished). The first course is a simple salad with candied walnuts and it's nothing mind-blowing but it's tasty. And why not start with some greens before digging into the meat and potatoes? I'd requested my steak cooked medium rare, and it was indeed cooked perfectly. This is one amazing steak. Almost every mouthful was so tender and delicious, and the seasoning was right on point. There were a couple of bites with inedible fatty pieces, but mostly I enjoyed the heck out of this meal. (The fries were great, too.) I was pretty full but I couldn't resist trying their creme caramel for dessert and it was also terrific. Super creamy and loaded with burnt-caramel sauce, I pretty much inhaled this concoction. (I tried a couple of the joint's cocktails as well, and they were fine but nothing that knocked my socks off.) J's Steak Frites isn't exactly cheap but I'd say it's worth it.

It's a pris fixe menu of salad, steak and fries. The salad sucked, in my opinion. Limp lettuce, lacking flavour. The steak was tasty and nicely seasoned but had a bit too much gristly fat for my taste. The butter sauce was nice. The fries were awesome! Best when eaten piping hot. If yours get cold, don't be shy about asking for some hot fresh ones, seeing as they're unlimited. The service was lovely; the atmosphere was alight. Glad I tried this place but I don't think I'll be rushing back.

J's has a great, simple concept that works well - choose how you like your steak and they handle the rest. They start you off with some bread and butter, a spinach salad, and then comes the steak as well as the unlimited fries. Every bite was very good - they know what they're good at, and they execute it well. The fries are just like McDonalds fries, and the steak comes with a tarragon cream sauce that was pretty good too. For dessert we tried the oreo cake and strawberry shortcake which were both very solid - they make all their pastries in house. Lastly, the service was excellent! They were super attentive and came around often with piping hot fries, which apparently someone managed to eat 12 plates of once. Overall, J's was all around very solid and it's well worth trying!

Came here one day out of curiosity and I can safely say I have enjoyed my experience. The steak was cooked to perfection and the unlimited frites is never a bad thing. Only downside was the salad was a bit over dressed and sour, but all in all I would definitely come back!

$55 for a 10oz steak, candied walnut salad, bread and unlimited fries. They only serve steak frites and they do it well. The salad was very very very citrusy which was too acidic for my stomach but the candied walnuts made up for it. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare as requested and served with a targon sauce (can't remember). The steak was not warm when served and got cold pretty fast despite it being served on top of a plate over a candle. It was a bummer because even if slightly cold, it was definitely how I liked my steak and could only imagine if it was warm. Not sure if it was sitting out too long until it was served. Hopefully it was a one off experience as it was a relatively expensive dinner. We definitely enjoyed the unlimited fries with the sauce though. The fries kind of remind me of McDonalds fries. The service was AMAZING however. The servers were really nice and attended to all of our requests timely. Though we didn't have a reservation, I would recommend one as there's not that many tables and a pretty popular spot. We got lucky.

We went here to see if it was similar to L'entrecote in Paris, which we loved! Happy to say the food was the same, delicious steak, fries and the signature sauce was great! All you can eat frites, 10 oz steak, salad and bread for a fixed price. We also had the dessert, mango apricot cheesecake. The red wine was also a hit for the bday celebrant. Dessert and wine are extra.
Be the first to ReplyA cool spot to get your steak and frites fix.
The restaurant doesn't have a menu, and all your expected to select is how you would like your steak cooked. Located on Toronto's West end, the restaurant has more of an European / Parisian style setup rather than the traditional steakhouse. Steak was excellently prepared and the frites were just kind of perfect and did I mention it's unlimited! (They kind of remind me of McDonald's fries which some people enjoy, such as me) Definitely adding to the list in my steakhouse rotation

No frills, you get what you pay for plus great service. J's Steak Frites - 1198 Queen St. West $49 per person includes steak, unlimited fries, candied walnut green salad, bread, and free dessert only on Sundays Well worth the price. The frites remind me of McDonald's fries though, which I know for some is their fave, but is not my fave type of fries. They use a candle underneath the steak plates to keep the steak warm, but they should also consider a warm plate for the fries as well bc it only keeps hot for a couple of mins after they serve it fresh to you and it's only the most delicious when the frites are hot (or at least warm). The free dessert on Sunday was such a nice touch. Their sticky toffee pudding is actually to die for. Made this meal well worth the money.
