The entire menu is amazing!!! BBQ boat is delicious.
The ribs are very tasty. Puff, puff pass drink is delicious. Not one dish disappointed.

Ooh, it's been a while since I've been really excited about a place and Kemuri Tatsu-ya lived up to the hype. The ambiance is great and the food is even better. I would absolutely order the Hot Pocketz and the brisket again.

Tried this place for the first time last night with my husband, and overall, it was exceptional. The flavors in every dish were spot on, and my husband really enjoyed his drink. I ordered a matcha-style drink served in a cute cat glass--it was pleasantly flavorful, though it didn't have much of a "kick." We ordered five different dishes, and while everything was delicious, the portions were surprisingly very small given the price. For nearly $200, I expected a bit more substance. For example, I ordered the chicken flats after seeing someone else enjoying them in entirety , but what I received was only half a flat of chicken, Yes each flat was cut in half, which was confusing considering the cost. Service was ok, had to wait in between orders to order more food then wait another 15 min before it arrived Nice conversational decor Don't get me wrong--the food was extremely flavorful and beautifully presented, but the portion sizes left me feeling like I could've gone for a burger afterwards.
We were able to make reservations the night before, but it
We were able to make reservations the night before, but it seems like day of, it's hard to get a table without a reservation based off of some walk ins we saw try to come in. This is a super vibey spot, with attentive and friendly servers, and a lot of interesting fusion small plates! If you don't like fusion or barbecue, then I'm unsure if you would like this spot, but I loved it! We got Matcha painreliever - so delicious! Basically a virgin piña colada with match, you really can't go wrong. Puff puff pass - kind of strong tbh but on the sweeter side as far as alcoholic drinks go. Would def recommend at least two people sharing this one. But the cup it comes in is so cute! Bluefin tuna carpaccio - one of my favorites of the night! The tuna felt fresh and I loved it with the radish. The karashi was a little too much though. There was just a lot of sauce for the thin slices of tuna. Taiyaki cornbread - Really solid cornbread that comes with a delicious sesame butter! I wish the outside was crispier, like how a cornbread crust can get, but it was still solid. I think what made this dish special besides the shape, was just how light the butter was, and the sweetness of the honey that really tied everything together. Hot pocketz - also one of my favorites of the night! The tofu skin isn't really discernable, it's more just a vehicle for the brisket and cheese. And boy does it deliver! The smoked gouda is so rich, and the brisket is pretty tender. And the crispy cheese outside gives it such a nice crunch which really adds to the texture. Smoked chashu burnt ends - pretty tender and really satisfying to bite into! It's the perfect size to just sink your teeth into and I really liked the slight sweetness. The dollops of mustard also helped cut through the richness, but it was kind of too concentrated. It was like a bite of wasabi with each bite. BBQ Eel - also also one of my favorites of the night! But that might just be because I like real. I think the difference between expensive eel and cheap eel isn't that different tastewise. But these pieces were definitely bigger and meatier than your typical stuff. But it was so soft and flavorful. Brisket dipping ramen - this was decent. But for the price I had expected a way bigger bowl. And this is a good way to try the brisket if you don't want to order it alone. It was pretty tender, but the brisket chunks in the broth were more soft. I know for dipping noodles, the broth is supposed to be concentrated but it was just too salty for me. Like the first few bites were good but it became a little too much. But the noodles themselves were actually so good, I loved the texture of them. They were so bouncy and chewy! Banana pudding - not your typical banana pudding! The matcha, to be honest, didn't add much, but there was a layer of dulce de leche or something in the middle that really elevated the dish. It gave off very banana toffee vibes and it was delicious! I also love that they gave a lot of wafer crumble on top so the texture is very varied.
Maybe I was just in a mood or something, but I am not a fan.
First, the dishes were expensive, especially given the portion sizes (yes, I realize they are small plates). Just too much by like 25%, IMO. Second, while I am a big fan of both Japanese and BBQ, the fusion was simply not to my liking. Again, maybe just an off-day on my part. If was also a bit odd to have the typical BBQ/smokehouse smell on top of my Asian-ish food. What was truly off-putting was being walked to our table when we arrived, but seemingly walking past a "service area" in the middle that really smelled like an old dirty dish towel. It carried into the seating area. No good, and atmosphere killer for me. I would be happy to give this place another try, but only if someone else is paying.
Experience3/food4 We were driving through and stopped here
Experience3/food4 We were driving through and stopped here at around 5:30 pm. The food was good. My favorite was the chicken skewer, everyone liked the brisket. Our female waiter was not nice, fun or happy and gave us gross warm table water. We gave an excuse that it was too loud in the backroom and would like to please sit inside by the bar. The beginning of our meal was awkward with her but we switched tables and the new super happy male waiter was great! He even served us ice cold water - without us asking for it. Thank you sir. This is a good place to spend $130 on appetizers and drinks - then go to P.Terry's after. Eat a big meal before or after. If you have teenagers, not a good idea to eat here if you're on a budget. The food was good
Inventive and tasty
Would highly recommend this place. A really inventive fusion of Japanese and Texan. High quality ingredients, served in a funky Izakaya setting. Service was good. Overall a great experience.
Great ambiance, great drink selection.
The taiyaki cornbread was unique and delicious, and I was a huge fan if the kinoko mushroom skewer. Staff was knowledgeable and explained each dish as it was put down, and we received smoked wings on the house (which my partner loved) by the staff. Would be a great date or after work spot!
Let's be honest.
This is an x-rated restaurant and is not family-friendly. Being from out of town and loving Japanese food and BBQ, we thought this would be a fun and interesting restaurant. We were traveling with our toddler and made a reservation online. Nowhere on the website was it made clear that this is NOT A SUITABLE PLACE FOR CHILDREN. They have high chairs, but this is really a 21+ restaurant. The service all around was very unfriendly, cold and unwelcoming. At the time we were there, they were blasting explicit music, not considerate of a child's experience. When we made a request for them to turn the music down and please warn guests when they book a reservation that this is not child-friendly, the host told us, "this is just the music we play here." So offensive. We left as quickly as we could.

Very very cool and delicious restaurant concept! BBQ meets Japanese cuisine. The menu is so unique with so many fun dishes and drinks to try. Inside is dark but inviting and feels like a step into somewhere else not in Austin. When you walk in you are welcomed by all of the workers in a coordinated greeting. Our waiter was so incredible, he was helpful and made our experience more interactive especially with the BBQ boat presentation. For drinks, I really enjoyed the Kai Kura Kura and the Matcha pain killer. My friend got the grapefruit sour and you do have to squeeze your own grapefruit for juice but it kind of adds to the experience. For appetizers, we tried the bluefin tuna carpaccio, the taiyaki cornbread and the hot pocketz. The carpaccio was cut super thin and very fresh. The cornbread was amazing with the butter (wish it came with more than two pieces) and the hot pocketz were cheesy, spicy goodness. I shared the BBQ boat with two others and we opted for the bento box add on. Highly recommend the add on, it's $10, and it allows you to make basically BBQ hand rolls with guac or bbq sushi tacos? Crazy combo that turned out to be absolutely delicious. Our boat came with brisket, pork belly and ribs. All meats were fantastic, with the pork belly and brisket being my favorite. For dessert, you MUST order the banana pudding if that is your thing. Even if it's not, it was sooo good!! Definitely recommend this place for a great, unique meal. Perfect to bring out of towners or just a group of friends. Only wish they had a happy hour!

3.7 stars. I hate to knock this place, because I do like certain aspects of it. I reaallllly wanted to love it. The atmosphere was nice - felt like a lowkey japanese restaurant with an austin twist. Good for a chiller evening with a small group. Service was really good. Menu is basically all meat, which I don't mind but also don't love. Felt like I was missing some carbs & greens.. something to lighten the meat heavy dishes. Maybe pineapple? salad? I didn't like the smoky smell of the restaurant. I get that's the whole idea but it was a turn off for me.
Food, 10 Out of 10 stars, service -1
This fun, funky, dimly lit, Austin vibe restaurant has incredible food with incredible fusions of aromas, textures, flavors and freshness. We were two couples and it was our first time to visit. Every dish was exquisite. The whimsical way the special BBQ boat was served in a wooden boat was a delight visually and gastronomically. We shared ten menu items, all were excellent. Here's the rough part. We couldn't get cutlery, even asking more than three times. We all ordered great cocktails to start, three arrived right away, the fourth was served almost towards the end of the meal, even though it was a duplicate. When the two desserts arrived, we were left with the same dishes with the remnants of the rib bones, chicken wings, edamame shells still on the table. Check came with the desserts without even asking. We arrived at 6:30 with quite a few empty tables but right after 7:00 it got quite busy. We will give it another chance, maybe it was an off night for the server and bartender.
Japanese cuisine
The “catch line” at Kemuri Tetsuya is “East Meats West”. And that they do. I went there with family one rainy night. We used an Uber, there was limited parking in the area. We were served a series of beef, chicken, pork, and seafood that was beautifully roasted, fried, etc. There were a number of side dishes with rice and various sauces to go with whatever dish we had. Overall, a great dinner.
Different dining experience
Met a couple to reconnect for the evening. From entry to exit, this place rocked. Very interesting menu which is a fusion of bbq and Japanese with a bit of Texana thrown in. Loved the cornbread and hot pockets and everyone liked the chicken. All items were shared and the adult beverages were really tasty. My only issue was the noise level limited our conversation which was a bit of a bummer. Definitely needs to be on your list of dining options. Service was top notch!
Best in Austin
We arrived in a bit of a rush and the team were amazing and getting out our AMAZING food in record time- the service was incredible. Overall an incredible , charming and friendly atmosphere, and they even gave us a complimentary dish! 10/10
Interesting Austin Food!
Wow, we loved this place so much! This was definitely my favorite meal in Austin. The food was quirky but approachable. It felt very “Austin local,” but still gave us something that was so different from everything else we tried on the food scene. Our meal was pricey, but we had a great time at this place for our big Austin night out. And don’t get me started on how amazing the cocktails are! I would recommend a reservation, though we were able to snag a seat at the bar without one!
Japanese-Mextex? Yes please!
In a somewhat quirky and cool restaurant you get to enjoy some of the best fusion Japanese food in the land. Stunning combinations most of which we’d not seen before amongst a lovely, brilliantly decorated space.
A must visit while in Austin
This is the best dinner we had while in Austin. Some amazing and unique dishes that you have to try!
Restroom was the best bit of our evening…
This was a highly anticipated booking, supposed to be the pinnacle of our trip. We were rather shocked to be seated in the garden at the rear of the property for an early evening booking. I did express my disappointment to the lady who really couldn’t have been less interested. There were fly gadgets placed on every table which should have tipped us off ; a hessian screen to shield us from the sun and a few, ineffective ceiling fans. We spent the whole time fighting off the legions of flies around our beer and food and I’m afraid it completely detracted from our enjoyment of the food. Smoked eel was as expected, Bento Box=rice and pickles : cured pulpo + wasabi - nice but nothing special , best dish was Tofu & Brisket Pockets - tasty and interesting. On the upside the Restrooms were clean and had AC - best bit of my night. And had anyone asked when we left after 50 mins I would have happily given feedback but I guess no-one cared. Such a disappointment to end a lovely trip to this fine city 🥲
Float like a feather, sting like a bee!
I was looking for light dishes packed full of flavor and found my fix! Ordered two appetizers and a main dish, each delicious with their own personalities. Staff was extremely helpful selecting the menu and constantly checking on me - 10/10 would come back again
