Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
My two daughters and I made this as an outing on my wife's
My two daughters and I made this as an outing on my wife's birthday. Amazing food, worth the initial pain of getting seated. There was a confusion on the reservation which apparently was due to the surge in the customer interest after the restaurant made its way into Eater!
I was super disappointed.
I know it was their second to last day, but they were out of at least 5 menu items. We got the beef skewers, which were great. Pin noodles with tofu and chicken curry stew were mediocre at best. The price point isn't reflected in the food. Service seemed confused. Problem with the check. Hate that stuff.
If you have never had the opportunity to experience
If you have never had the opportunity to experience authentic Cambodian, then you need to treat yourself to Khmai (trust me, you deserve it). This restaurant is one of Chicago's very few Cambodian restaurants, and they are fine dining, so reservations only. I've gone during the weekdays, and they are packed, so walk-ins are probably hard to come by. The staff is super nice, attentive, and knowledgeable, and they never make you feel bad for mispronouncing something, which I inevitably do. The ambience is gorgeous, and even though they are busy, they do a great job with the layout, easily accommodating families and couples. Now... on to the food! We had the Beef Skewers (Sach Koh Ang) and Pork Belly (Chein Sach Chrouk) - Crisp on the outside, but nice & tender when you bite in. The pork belly legit melts in your mouth. The sauces on both are delicious, and nothing like I've quite had before. A perfect mix of savory and salty with a touch of sweetness with the tang of lemongrass. Mai's Eggrolls were super crunchy with a delicious mix of chicken, taro, & garlic. My hands down favorite small bite on their menu is the chicken wings (Slab Morn Ang)! They come out in 4 whole wings. They are fried to a crisp and slathered an insanely tasty sauce that has tamarind and lemongrass in it.... that sauce, I tell you I could eat that every day and never get tired. It's tangy and savory, and the aromatics alone!!! *****cue drooling***** . After all the apps we split an order of the Lod Cha (pan fried pin noodles) with steak and a fried egg, which was super tasty! The drink menu seems to rotate, and the guava margarita that I had was a fantastic addition to the delicious food. We were so full, we didn't even look at the dessert menu, but if you get to check out the desserts let me know what you think! 100% when I come back I have my eye on their chicken curry dish (Somlor Kari), which I haven't tried yet, but I saw other people order. It looked really good, and smelled great! We found metered street parking right outside with no issues. We paid with card, but I think they take cash as well. It's fine dining, so it's a little pricey, but worth every penny. I'm not sure about carry out options. Don't let me find out the wings are available for carry out, or you may be seeing me on the daily! According to their IG they will be closing for a short time in order to move to a larger location, so I made sure to get my reservation in before they did, and I can promise you I will be at their door with a quickness when they do open up the new location! Thank you for a great experience Khmai!
Wow I am so happy this place exists in the Rogers Park
Wow I am so happy this place exists in the Rogers Park area! Growing up around here, I feel like the food options were always so limited, particularly in any of the asian cuisines. When I heard this place opened up and was a James Beard semifinalist, it was definitely on the top of my list to try! It can be a bit tricky since this place is reservation only, but a lot more seating options available on the weekdays so that is definitely your best option. I've had Khmer (Cambodian) food before (shoutout to Koffeteria in Houston, must try for baked goods if you're there) so I already had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into. In general I find it lines most closely with Thai cuisine with some clear influences of Laotian and Vietnamese (go figure those are the three neighboring countries to Cambodia). You'll find familiar items like lemongrass, galangal, and tamarind in a lot of their dishes with some maybe more funky things like shrimp paste in a lot of the dishes (at least with what we ordered). Food-wise we ordered: - Ampil bangkea (shrimp in khmer/tamarind sauce): Probably my favorite dish. The crispy shrimp in tamarind sauce was super good. - Chein sach chrouk (crispy pork belly): Nice big chunks of pork belly nicely contrasted with the pickled veges. Delicious! - Gnoam Chek (banana blossom salad): Nice and refreshing salad to break up some of the early meatier apps (before we ate more meaty entrees). Probably could've used less of the sauce, but still good! - Somlor Machu Krboung (stew with beef short ribs): Super tender short ribs that fell off the bone which was nice. Good meaty flavor with a tiny bit of kick. - Amok Trei (braised fish in coconut curry): At this point I was getting quite full, but the braised fish was super tender with a really rich curry sauce. Was maybe a bit overwhelming for my taste, but still good. - Dessert didn't really have a name to it but it was basically a cake with their house made ice cream and a bunch of fresh fruit. Nice little way to end it. Service was also friendly and prompt. Our server, Harry, walked through the menu with us and we got checked in on pretty frequently. The space itself was pretty nice albeit a bit dark. Super excited to see what their new place will look like. Also got to chat with the owner, Mona, near the end of service. She was super lovely. I am so glad I got to check this place out before they go on a bit of a winter hiatus and move to their new spot (also still in Rogers Park). Definitely can't wait to come back here again. Their final service will be at the end of November so definitely recommend checking them out before then or definitely check them out when they reopen at their new location!
Went here on Friday evening, we had a reservation for 3 at
Went here on Friday evening, we had a reservation for 3 at 7pm. When we arrived, it was ridiculously busy, and they sat us at what looked to be the last available table, the one closest to the front door. Not ideal, but I figured I'd get over it. After being seated somewhat quickly, they brought us bread service with lemongrass butter, was quite nice! However, after that, it took another 20m for a server to come by and take our food and drink orders. We ordered a combination of things: The egg rolls The chicken skewers (they were out of beef) The chicken curry The papaya salad The pork shoulder Vodka soda Gin and tonic After waiting about 20m in total for someone to take our food and drink orders, it took another 20m for our drinks to arrive, and slowly but surely, our food begun to come out. The servers first dropped off the egg rolls, but it was another half hour before the next course came out. Altogether, it took nearly two hours for all of the food to come out, and they had forgotten the papaya salad and the pork shoulder entirely. As for the the actual food, it was average. The egg rolls with taro were excellent, the skewers were pretty tasty but if the beef skewers are one of your most popular items, make more of them. The pork shoulder, after being forgotten, was practically unedible in terms of fat/gristle and bland. The curry was good, but lacked depth of flavor. Don't even bother ordering the papaya salad, they include it as a garnish for most of their dishes. Don't get me started with the cocktails. If you have a bar/bartender, please make sure they are trained to make cocktails properly. The gin and tonic and the vodka soda were the worst cocktails I've ever had in the city of Chicago, and they aren't difficult to make. All this being said, I'm glad they're busy, but they need some extra help and could use better execution, and I hope they can put it together when they move into their new location.

Wow. I had really high expectations because I had heard such glowing things about this place; I was still blown away. Everything we ordered was so filled with flavor--a perfect balance of fresh and light and deep and funky and salty and spicy-- textures were perfect, portions were perfect. Honestly they could have spit in my face and I would still give them five stars, but our server was so sweet, too. Just incredible all around. My favorites were the snapper and the curry, but I genuinely think everything on the menu will be delicious. 10/10 recommend.

We didn't visit Khmai for a few months (life happens) and wow! New menu, excellent food (didn't expect anything less) and top-notch service (as always). Shout out to the all-so-amazing Shawna!! We don't remember the dish's names but we had calamari, steak, chicken wings and their amazing cocktails (old fashioned in photo). Lol! We saw a lot of foodies ordered their whole red snappers and wished we did. It was a perfect date night with my hubby nonetheless. We are going back for their Khmer Journey experience tomorrow with friends.
The food was pretty good.
Ribs were sticky and sweet and sour. Fish came with a tasty sauce, but the topping was very salty and was so abundant that we had to scrape it off. Noodles were flavorful, though a touch too sweet and there was too much raw cabbage and green onions on top. Again, we removed them. The real problem was...everything else. It took 15 minutes for anyone to come by after we were seated. Another twenty minutes later, we had to inquire about our drinks and, when they arrived, they were wrong. They ran out of items on the menu, and we weren't informed until long after we'd ordered them. We'd been seated over an hour with no food arriving and no one checking in to give us an update when we finally complained. They were very kind after our complaint and sent us complimentary items, etc., though we still had to ask twice to have our water refilled. I totally understand kitchens being backed up, etc. but please check in and let people know. We were on the clock with the babysitter and it ended up a quite costly night.
A pre service review.
Made a reservation , two minutes late, table given away. Bar can't make any cocktails on the menu and the bartender speaks no English. Inauspicious start

Drove all the way from the City to explore Khmai and to check out Cambodian food! Very glad we did - such unique flavors and excellent preparation. The simple egg rolls were excellent, the chicken dish with carrots and all the broth was delicious. I would not order the rib eye again as I would save room for more of other dishes and get a steak elsewhere. Cocktail list was good. While the servers, hostess and everyone was excellent, nice and welcoming, there was a long wait between courses and service attentiveness was lacking - thus not 5 stars overall, but food is 5 star.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
