English speaking Michelin star sushi chef serves up 5 star fish at this tiny 8 seat restaurant.
Tatsuhito Ota is an absolute master as his craft. As a 3rd generation sushi chef he works at this tiny 8 seat spot just outside the tourist hub in Tokyo serving up some of the most incredible sushi I have ever had the privilege of tasting. This is a no nonsense place as there are only 2 seatings available 6 and 8:30 pm (I recommend going for the late seating) and the meal is selected by him in the traditional Omakase style. The only people working are him and his wife and his mastery of wine and sake are next level. The meal begins with sashimi and ends with sushi. Tatsuhitoโs English is pretty good and he will chat with you as he slices up heavenly pieces of fish. We got reservations on Pocket Concierge about a month earlier and for about $100 a head this is an absolute steal for a Michelin star sushi experience.

We had such an amazing experience here! Chef Ota is truly special! We are from America and he treated us like family! On arrival we were the only 2 in the restaurant and had him all to ourselves for the first half of our meal!
The quality is amazing, the value is incredible!
I think because this Michelin star is further away to get to it scares people away, but weโll worth the trip!
The chef interacts throughout the meal. The entire omakase experience is one we will never forget!
Thank you so much!!!
Relaxed omakase lunch
Well worth the 1 Michelin star! Relaxing Environment, friendly chef owner, variety of appetizers, superb sushi and super affordable price. Will recommend to frequent Japan travellers who start exploring out of central Tokyo.

We had an absolutely amazing time at Kiraku and had an amazing experience. The food was very fresh, very delicious, and overall it was a great dining experience. Even better was that the chef was amazingly kind and engaging, and we enjoyed our conversations with him (he speaks English, which was great as we were from out-of-country). He took the time to explain in great detail the food which was being served, the ingredients, cooking method and how best to enjoy each dish. The sake recommendations were also phenomenal. This dining experience was a highlight for my partner and I during our stay in Tokyo, and we very much wish to come back in the future. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

3 generations of family operation with over 80 years of history, this place is a true gem in Tokyo sushi restaurants. Although rated with just one star by Michelin, it offers taste and experience that surpasses some of the 3 star establishment, at least in my opinion.
Mr. Ota has a small dinner menu with only 3 options. 8 sushi, 12 sushi or full course omakase (10,000 Yen). I would suggest you go with the full course as for a few more thousand yen, you get 5-6 more appetizers, which includes the Ankimo (fabulous taste). Kiraku makes Edomae style sushi, which is traditional Tokyo style with vinegared rice and aged fish. Mr. Ota only uses the best ingredients, like sea urchin (uni) from Aomori, refreshing and sweet.
Mr. Ota speaks good English, and he is very approachable and likes to share his travel stories with his customers. Some of his patrons include local residents, his old time friends, some sake maker who produced the house sake for him (a must try), and some who sent him appreciation letters after emptied the Romanee Conti (good vintage too).
Kiraku is easily accessible by Odakyu line. Be aware of the local, express vs semi-express trains as express trains may not stop at Kyodo.
Deserves a star
Compared with another but Michelin starred Sushi Bar in Setagaya this is better to me because the quality is equally good or better as real tuna is not excluded and price is quite reasonable. This is an old and small Sushi-Bar open for many years. You either choose menu or whatever available and you like. However for the first visit I would recommend you to go for menu at Yen 9,000 per person. Then you will be asked what you do not wish to eat and then you will be served first 3 or 4 small dishes for the appetizer and quite a number of Sushis afterwards. It takes one and half to two hours to finish. It is not like Michelin 3 starred Ginza Jiro which does not allow drinking sake and get rid of you after half hour or so (I understand). Sushi is a traditional Yedo(Tokyo) style and not mostly designed to dip in Soy sauce and instead painted by brush with special sauce including one called Nikirishoyu (Soy sauce cooked with vinegar, sake and some other secret stuff and chilled) Some fishes are soaked with vinegar or ripen in advance to create specially good taste. Several sake in different types and a white burgundy by glass or bottle are available. Do' t ask the owner chef which is better or recommended. If you do the answer comes as "all good and recommended and it depends on what sort of taste you like with Sushi!โ The chef is actually very friendly but initially gives you not very good impression by appearing too serious. This is a quite good Sushi-Bar. No wonder making reservation is quite difficult. Actually I have been hesitating to write a review because, if I do, the bar would soon be crowded. Last but not least important. If one is expecting an American style or Midorizushi-type Sushi one would be totally disappointed.
