Kronenhalle Zürich Reviews
Good but not what it used to be
I have been dining at the Kronenhalle for over 25 years whenever in Zurich because the staff was welcoming, service elegant and food amazing! My last visit was very disappointing. The staff was not welcoming , service was not what it had been. My colleague was late for our luncheon date. I had ordered a avocado salad and glass of wine while waiting ; mentioning to the waiter that I’d be having my favorite dish the goulash once my friend arrived . The was not informed that the luncheon menu changed at a certain hour; my colleague arrived 10 minutes after the “change “ .The goulash was no longer available. I ended up with a tasteless veal steak slopped in “gravey”. My elegant traditional dinner was not to be had! The service at the Kronenhalle was elegant at one time. Old world and professional waiters who had worked at the restaurant for years; some even knew their return customers . Sadly this is no longer the case . The new very common waitstaff obviously doesn’t like their job or the clients. I probably won’t be returning . My 25 year love affair with the Kronenhalle is over.
Kronenhalle ... Mediocre Experience
Food choices are a hit and miss ... service is also a bit slow. Given the Kronenhalle is a flagship Zurich restaurant, I would have expected more/better. It's also one of the most expensive restaurants in Zurich so a sub-par experience is really not ok.
Beautiful restaurant and delicious food
Beautiful restaurant in Zürich, which lives up to the hype. The food was delicious, the service was great, the artwork was incredible: a Picasso, Chagall and many other famous artists. We loved the Wienerschnitzel and another Zürich specialty, veal with creamy mushroom sauce.
Iconic visit
Very excited to visit this iconic restaurant in Zurich. We were seated upstairs, I suspect that is where any tourists/foreigners are seated. Reservations are essential. Service was spot on, food was perfect, old school Swiss cuisine that comes with huge portions. Bring your appetite as my second course came with two large portions. We dressed in jackets, ladies with us wore more fancy dresses, there was one couple in golf polo shirts but this is very much a place you can dress up to. After dinner we had drinks downstairs at the cocktail bar, great experience drinks were awesome service a bit spotty but could have been an off night, but either way make sure you add this into your itinerary.
A must when in Zurich
Traditional restaurant serving authentic and well prepared food. There is a good choice of dishes. The décor is beautiful, the service efficient. We had an aperitif in the welcoming bar. Works of art adorn the bar as well as the restaurant. I would not worry too much about the "rules of conduct" which are sent to you upon reservation. A blind eye is turned quite often. We shall go back.
Classic old school with contemporary menu
Classic old school experience but the menu features contemporary choices. The setting features priceless art, dark wood, and ornate decor. The service features highly polished waiters in spotless white formal jackets doing final preparations at the table. The menu features classics, mainly veal and beef, but also more contemporary fish options and even plant based chicken. For me the rosti was the high point—hashbrowns prepared in heaven. Service was excellent and we would definitely return as countless citizens of Zurich have done for many decades.
An “Institution” Where Americans are Treated Poorly
About me - well-traveled, food enthusiast extraordinaire, and my reviews are always fair. Our hotel in Zurich enthusiastically recommended this restaurant, and we obliged! From the description, it seemed like a place where dreams come true. To add color, my wife and I are ALWAYS impeccably dressed and experienced in all facets of haute cuisine. The dining room is BEAUTIFUL, and we were so excited to dine here, until the hostess started to climb a flight of stairs, to our surprise. The upstairs dining room was lovely, don’t get me wrong, but we quickly realized that this is where all of the Americans were unceremoniously ushered for the evening. The staff CLEARLY did not want to be working up there, and their demeanor reflected every bit of it. We jokingly and bitterly referred to it as the “Trash Lounge”. We read reviews of arrogant staff, and now understand it all too well. Our waiter was arrogant, and it seemed as though he was bitter to be working in the “upstairs” dining room with “the Americans”. I asked for assistance with the wine list and was shocked to have been dismissed by our waiter. The food was exceptional, wonderful wine list, but the evening was tarnished by the blatant segregation practiced by management. Close friends of ours had the EXACT same experience months later. There are not many places where I vehemently would not return, but this is one of them. Would DEFINITELY NOT return.
A global institution!
Yes, ok, maybe service is not perfect - second glass of wine never arrived, table was not ready- but the ambience is so charming and the food so delicious that it is very easy to forget minor things that go wrong ! You can dine with museum - level works of art literally hanging over you ! Staff behave naturally with no excessive formalities so it is very easy to feel comfortable and enjoy the place This is a place where you really feel history, it’s unique and should not be missed ! Book well in advance ! PS: the lady at the front desk even chased me to give me a leaflet with the history of the restaurant ! Highly appreciated!
Great Traditional Swiss Food
Traditional old Swiss venue with lots of history. Delicious food, especially recommend veal with cream sauce. Lovely staff and service. Would definitely recommend.
Living on past glory
Moscow Mule in a glass instead of copper mug, had to remind waitress that we ordered wine for dinner, we had to refill our water and wine glasses ourselves, filet mignon (seignant) was difficult to cut (knives not sharp enough), reminded a waiter that we ordered the check ages ago… Very kind waitress, but the place was completely understaffed - and this during pre-Christmas!
