Excellent French/Japanese meal in Kyoto
We had an excellent French/Japanese meal at Le Rive Gauche. Small place, which has a seperate identity as a udon restaurant at lunch time; just four tables in the back room, and a counter in the front. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about France, French food, and French wine. Not sure about her level of English, since we spoke in Japanese, but we liked her very much. We each had the 6,000 Yen course, which is plenty of food. Multiple courses: a tasty amuse-bouche, a grilled scallop , homemade chicken terrine, tataki kamasu (barracuda!) on green leaves, a cup of very nice mushroom soup, then our main dishes. My partner had fish; I had soft beef. Desert of choice (white wine jelly with persimmon for my partner) or cheese (for me); and coffee. Each dish of a smaller size, typical of Japanese dining. All carefully prepared and presented; all excellent, including the coffee. The food seemed like such a good deal that we splurged on a bottle of wine (they have some very expensive ones, but some more reasonable). All in, it came to about Yen 10,000 for each of us, which at the current exchange rate is a great bargain. Definitely recommend for a special Japanese/French meal while in Kyoto.

Excellent food! We found this hidden gem by accident. The service was super nice and friendly. ( speaking English a little bit) It’s a smaller restaurant. They have 3 kind of degustation menu, no á la carte. The whole menu was excellent, the main dish, the Beef was simply incredible. One of the best food experience we had in our whole Japan trip and we were there for 3 weeks and ate a lot of good food, So this says a lot.

Absolutely outstanding dinner! We did the "A" tasting menu. I am pescatarian and the chef had no problem accommodating my dietary restrictions. Every dish was perfectly executed. The flavors were amazing and the preparation of all, outstanding! The only disappointment is that we were the only patrons there. What a shame! Granted it was a Tuesday night but even then, I can't understand us being the only table. This restaurant is just over the bridge from the Ritz Carlton, where were staying. So close and beyond well worth it. The pricing is perfect, boardering on not nearly enough, for the quality and passion that is displayed. The service was great as well. The french cuisine is excellent and a nice change. We found this restaurant on our own...Not even a recommendation by the concierge, which is unbelievable to us. This is truly one of the best restaurants I have been to in the world. Is it over the top fancy? No. What it is, intimate, laid back and elegant. Friendly, welcoming and warm. Delightfully tasty, perfect proportions and pleasing. When in Kyoto it would be a shame not to experience this lovely restaurant, this has earned the honor of being one of my top recommendations!

Staying in ryokans for a few days we were looking for time out from our huge Japanese banquet dinners, and we found it. Rive Gauche is a tiny (seats about 16) French restaurant on Nijo-dori just a few steps east of the river bridge and a couple of blocks north of the main Gion district. We came here on a Thursday (only customers at 7.30pm) and a Saturday night (all tables taken but emptying). There is an English menu, the chef speaks French and the staff a little English. Service was neither fast nor slick, but very friendly. The food though was magnifique! The meat on the main course dishes was cooked perfectly medium rare and melted in the mouth (note don't eat here if you like you're at medium or well done-its not an option!) the chef made us French onion soup specially on our second visit as we'd said it was a favourite. The accompaniments are simple and basic. The pate de campagne was perfectly rustic, the creme brûlée to die for, and the cheeses excellent!

The food here is so good, I'd wanted to go back a second time while i was in Kyoto but didn't get the chance to. Writing about this makes me miss the dinner I had at Rive Gauche. I was served a foie gras so tender and so good, I wanted every bite to last. Then came the beef cheeks that was melt-in-your-mouth. If you ever have the chance, don't give this a miss.
