Beautiful restaurant in DC
Beautiful place in a great location. It is always super full so I suggest you reserve in advance. Breads they serve when arriving are amazing. Food was good but not amazing.
Be the first to ReplyOver priced, over rated and cold food
Food way over cooked with a burnt taste no better than any other mediocre second tier restaurant, Main Dish mashed potatoes cold. White Veal so hard was more like a crispy potato chip. Decore really rickety and uncomfortable. I would never recommend this restaurant to my business clients or friends. Only Bright spot away our server. He was great.
Be the first to ReplyManager needs to tone down the cologne
We have walked by Le Diplรณmate many times over the past few years and decided to finally give it a try. Even though we did not have a reservation, the host was able to fit us in. Our server was great and the atmosphere reminded us both of Parisian cafes. What we ordered was tasty (and a huge portion) but the big no-no in a restaurant was committed by the manager. He had apparently drenched himself in a heavy, over powering cologne before coming to work. The cologne arrived before he did and would burn our noses and change the flavor of the food every time he would walk by. Other than this, everything was great.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice French bistro
Fun, vibrant restaurant. They are obviously very popular but were able to accommodate us as walk-ins. The area where we weee seated was comfortable and quiet enough for conversation. The service was prompt and friendly. The food is typical bistro fare. The steaks frites was tasty but very salty. Very pleasant French bistro
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be a restaurant; now just a scene
Le Diplomate used to be a restaurant; now it is just a scene. Though overpriced, the small portions are a relief since the food is no longer very good. Dishes arrive from the kitchen lukewarm, quickly after order โ suggesting many are prepared in advance and served straight from the refrigerator or warmer towards speedy table turnover. Several of the servers seem to wish they were elsewhere. If cost is no concern and youโre not there for the food, the atmosphere remains great, with beautiful dรฉcor, a lively bar, and an energetic crowd.
Be the first to ReplyBest Dinner Iโve had in DC
I had a reservation for 2 at 9:00. I arrived early and ordered drinks and a starter at the bar. We ordered the Escargot, Bลuf Bourguignon and the Steak Frites. The food and the atmosphere were A+.
Be the first to ReplyYummy cheeseburger and onion soup!
Best cheeseburger and onion soup in town. Super busy place - there was a line out the door before they even opened. Staff was great.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, superb service, delightful atmosphere at Le Diplomate - we greatly enjoyed lunch yesterday! Thank you!
Loved it! Four of us had a wonderful lunch at Le Diplomate yesterday. Our server, Nate, was amazing. He was professional and kind. Nate elevated a superbly delicious dining experience to an even higher level! Our food was perfect. Superbly prepared and pleasantly served. Among the four of us, we enjoyed: boeuf bourguignon, branzino, the mushroom tart, a club sandwich, roasted cauliflower, haricots verts, profiteroles, and port. They were all excellent. The atmosphere at Le Diplomate was delightful. We are greatly looking forward to returning. Thank you from Lorraine.
Be the first to ReplyUnprofessional hostess
Very disappointing unpleasant staff. We was waiting more than 1 hour to get our table and hostess lady even didnโt check the availability of tables . So disrespectful regarding to clients. This restaurant should definitely improve their attitude regarding their future clients.
Be the first to ReplyGood time!
We had a reservation but showed up earlier, they managed to accomodate us in the outside patio, which is not as pretty as inside but we didnt care. Food is really good, and so are drinks. The onion soup, escargots and foie gra are amazing.
Be the first to ReplySecond dinner
Stopped in for second dinner at 915. Was able to make reservations on OpenTable 5 min before. The mushroom tart was excellent- flaky crust. The escargot were garlicky and buttery. The bread was great. The steak tartare was perfectly seasoned.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a Brunch!!!!
My wife and I hadn't been here for a while, having left the sturm und drang of DC to the wonderful cultural stronghold of Shepherdstown, WV. We started with a cremant d'alsace, some Perrier, and gougeres; all delish. The French onion soup I had was genuinely world-class, better than what one gets (often) in France. My wife was not a cheerleader for the mushroom soup; "Too mushroomy" was her comment. I tried it and found it fabulous. "I understand where you're coming from," I said (appropriately enough) diplomatically. She went on to rave about her roasted half-chicken. I had the mussels which were, as always, fabulously, extraordinarily great. What a treat!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and ambiance
I absolutely love the decor and ambiance of this restaurant. It's inviting, warm and cozy. The service is quick and friendly. We ordered the French Onion soup which was rich and decent but not the greatest I've had. Then had the steak frites and the steak au poivre. Both had great portion sizes and taste but the steak au poivre was hands down the winner. It was moist and quite flavourful. The portion size was quite hefty though so unless you are a big eater, you might find it challenging to finish this in 1 go. All in all, loved coming here and will visit again.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service & food
We had dinner at Le Diplomate on November 10, 2022. We had a wonderful experience. Our waiter was very charismatic and hospitable. Paid very close attention to all of his tables. The food was wonderful. We started with the fruits de mer petit plateau, which was the highlight of the meal. Each of us had the Dover sole which was also very good. We would have ordered dessert, but couldn't eat another bite. It is a little loud, but we knew to expect that from others' reviews. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyResting on its past laurels
My husband ordered a veal dish and I ordered the special of the night: Dover Sole. Our waitress was very good but she could not compensate for problems of the kitchen. Our salad of warm shrimp was very good and promptly served. My husband's dish of veal was good and just the right side of too salty but the sole was inedible due to a heavy proportion of salt and probably sitting under a heat lamp for a while. The texture was dried and salty. It was the specialty of the evening ($54) and I asked the kitchen to remake it. The initial manager of that area of the restaurant inferred that I was wrong about the dish.About 30 minutes later after the waitress and the general manager stopped by, it came to the table. This time the major taste was sour due to too many capers. This was a real disappointment as the restaurant has glowing reviews. The restaurant comped us for several items but we would have preferred a well prepared meal. Many people around us were eating hamburgers so maybe that should have been a warning signal.
Be the first to ReplyAlways eat here when we are in town. Great food and experience
This was probably the 4th time we have been here, as we always come when visiting family in DC. Every time we have been here we are always happy we visited Le Diplomate. We brought along a first timer, and he was very impressed. Last night was no exception. The vegetarian in our party had the ravioli, I had the duck, the others had the steak tartare and the veal. All of these, along with the excellent bread, were superb. And, we made certain to have the desserts! The creme brulee is always great, the apple tartin perfect! Our server Theo was attentive, prompt, exceedingly helpful when describing the menu items, and so polite. I highly recommend a meal here.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful location & good food
Our party of five enjoyed lunch in the outdoor seating area on a beautiful, sunny late November day. (There were also heaters.) One person had mussels and frites, another had a burger, the third person had steak tartar, and two of us had the warm shrimp salad. All delicious. Although we didn't have our dog with us, the outdoor seating area is dog friendly.
Be the first to ReplyFun atmosphere
Le Diplomate channels a bustling French bistro very nicely, the atmosphere is fun. They initially seated us near an open door which servers were using to serve outdoor diners. It was too chilly for us and they were very nice about moving us, though the new table wasnโt that much better. Our server was delightful, very attentive and friendly. The issues with the kitchen werenโt her fault. We waited so long for our main courses that tables turned and the new diners were served their first and second courses before we were. Luckily our first courses came out quickly since we arrived very hungry. Our server checked with us a few times to let us know we werenโt forgotten, and even the manager came by to apologize, though he stopped short of comping a glass of wine or anything for the inconvenience. My husband and I enjoyed our food. I had the trout, which was very good, though nothing was outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
We were looking forward to our brunch at Le Diplomate since it was also a birthday celebration. The decor is charming; there is a European feel to it. The pastry chef knows their craft. The bread basket, pastries, cheese platter, and escargots. were delicious. However, the rest of the meal was average. No one raved over a single dish. Then there was the service - it took 90 minutes before we got our entrees, and this was after watching tables that came in after we did, get their meals, and pay! While the bus staff religiously refilled our water classes, getting a second cup of coffee was another frustrating experience. Even our server said that our wait had been too long and had spoken to the manager about it, and they would comp desserts. When we had finished with the meal and the server was placing dessert menus in front of us, we indicated that no one wanted dessert at that point. How long would that have taken? Forty-five minutes? I realize that restaurants are struggling with staffing, and I felt for our server who was running around taking orders and getting drinks. Still, the time spent in a very crowded and ridiculously loud dining room is not an experience that I care to repeat.
Be the first to ReplyReliably wonderful
Food was fabulous. Started with the scrumptious pate. I was wavering between the bronzino and the steak frites..... the waiter steered me to the bronzino. Oh my, was it the perfect choice! Everone else at the table was equally happy with their varied choices. We ordered profiteroles for the table to share (we were four). Next time, I'll get two orders!
Great atmsphere.... truly a bit like being is a bistro in Paris.
Lunch
Stopped in for lunch for two without a reservation and was seated quickly in the outdoor, covered patio. The service and food was greatโฆand the bread basket was - oh so yummy! The pasta primavera was tasty with lots s of fresh veggies and my friend enjoyed her sandwich on a crispy, fresh baguette.
Be the first to ReplyDelicate French Brunch
The Romarin cocktail was highly refreshing for brunch, great choice! Assorted pastries were a great value, felt like they were fresh from France. The Croque madame was also delicious but was quite small. The outdoor seating was a perfect escape from the chilled morning air. Overall, extremely enjoyable experience and not as expensive as it seems (except the wine menu).
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding, as always
We ate in one of the outdoor chaletsโvery nice. Lola was an excellent server. He made great recommendations for our cheese plate appetizer. We thoroughly enjoyed our scallops and duck confit entrรฉes. We finished with delicious profiteroles. A wonderful experience overall. We look forward to returning.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing breakfast at Le Diplomate
Had a great Sunday breakfast at Le Diplomate. Wonderful service and the pain au chocolat was the best I've had. The rest of my party loved their pancakes and Eggs & Lox benedict. Highly recommend if visiting DC.

Do not miss having breakfast here! Everything was so delicious and you can't stop looking at the decor. The service was perfect. We all loved every moment here from the food, especially the croissants and pastry basket, the service, the atmosphere ..all of it was such a fun experience. I am sure their lunch and dinner are five star too.
