Food is good.
Choice is limited. We liked what we ordered although we ended up going to a second dinner place.

We had an excellent (fantastic!) experience at Le Fantastique as a party of four. The tasting menu was amazing, the atmosphere fun yet refined, and the service was warm and on point. Highly recommend for a special night out!

I want to start this review by saying I had an excellent time, and the food was excellent all around. We had great service, and since we sat at the bar we chatted with the Chef/owner who was super nice to us. We happened to share a lot of interests so it was a great experience. Let's get the food out of the way: It's an odd restaurant, the main focus is sashimi, and you are given chopsticks, but its not an Asian restaurant. We tasted every fish off the raw fish menu, and they were excellent. We also got a load of their home made bread, and cultured butter, because I was worried we'd be hungry, which didn't end up being the case. The loaf was phenomenal. We also splurged on a caviar dish while delicious was not worth $52 for 2 pieces. Was very tasty though. We then shared 2 large shrimps that were stuffed, very good. Dessert was excellent, great coffee. The music in this place is way above average with everything being powered by McIntosh tube amplifiers, a tube-pre-amplifier, and amazing in-ceiling speakers. They even hook up the same audio (fed from a turntable) to a vintage boombox over the toilet. Overall I had an excellent meal but it was very very expensive. Only real negative was their odd use of the space, it's very empty in the front of the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyMan I really really wanted to give this place a full on 5
Man I really really wanted to give this place a full on 5 star bc of the service and amazingness of the meal we had, but I'm going with a 4.5 and rounding down to 4 bc we were a little peeved they didn't confirm which tasting menu we wanted and charged us for the more expensive. But alas it was deliciousn Without saying anything else, the stand out dishes were by FAR the caviar dishes. Both the madeline/creme/caviar serve yourself and the eclair, which was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth! I came here with 3 coworkers/friends last week. We debated what to get heavily, and then ended up getting the tasting menu. My one friend doesn't eat raw fish but they were able to accommodate that. Now the only only reason I'm giving this more of a 4/4.5 stars and not a 5 is because while we didn't specify that we wanted the $135 tasting menu, they gave us the $195 tasting menu without confirming. I think that's a pretty significant thing to charge your customers for without asing (we didn't even realize there were two, we thought there was only one for $135), but alas, it was so amazing we were all very happy with it. The various dishes and my thoughts: -assortment of raw/cured fish: my favorite here was the trout and the chamomile white tail. While trout is usually too salty, they added something quite spicy to it that made it absolutely perfect. Did not love the tuna wrap thing. Bland and meh to me - but I don't love tuna. -caviar dishes: the was a make your own madeline with french creme and caviar, which was delightfully amazing, and maple eclairs topped with caviar, which was one of my favorite things ive had in a long long time! highly recommend. - lobster bisque/brulee: - this was good. Paired with the japanese milk bread, which was phenomenal, it was super yummy. - salad: I can't remember what it was called but it had a creamy dressing and brown sugar bits. SO good! -a5 wagyu: this came with fingerling potatoes and shallots. This was super bomb but I think because I was sooo full (it came second to last) it was not top of the list for me. -desserts: both were great! but was so stuffed! We also got the local wine flight. Again, the only downfall here was that they did not confirm with us what tasting menu we wanted. This was despite us having a longer conversation about the tasting menu and them being able to accommodate our friend who doesn't eat raw fish. The server (has glasses, accent, johnny depp vibes) was truly fantastic, so I don't understand this, but overall still such a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyMy Fiance and I's first time experience at Le Fantastique
My Fiance and I's first time experience at Le Fantastique was a VERY good experience. The service, food and ambiance is 10/10. Ambiance: The overall vibe feels casual BUT the experience is fine dining. I really like this atmosphere because it made me feel more comfortable and not forced to be fancy lol, but all the while while I am also getting a quality food experience. There are three different seating choices you can choose from. A more casual bar setting, a more intimate sit-down basic restaurant seating area, and a private area they called the Green Room which was a cozy, more intimate setting perfect for mingling and enjoying your company in a more private setting. We chose the Green Room sitting area and there's enough seating for 4-5 people. It came with 2 lounge chairs and a little chique leather sofa. It was a warm and cozy environment and I adored this seating area. Service: Our servers Jordan and Ociano (I probably butchered the spelling of this name and I'm so sorry lol). They did their best to make our experience above and beyond. Very attentive in making sure we were enjoying the experience, and very knowledgeable about the food we ate. Food: Their menu is short, sweet, simple and to the point. It includes a raw seafood bar where the prices range from $13 - $18. I was told all the fish are imported which is a neat fact and tells me they really care about the quality of their fish. We tried every single raw fish option. From the Hokkaido Scallops, to the Ocean Trout, to the Big Eye Tuna, to the Shima Aji, to the Mr. Lassen Trout and the Hirame and there is no doubt all of the fish are high quality and prepared very well. They were absolutely delicious and prepared to perfection. I ended up ordering 2 more orders of the Shima Aji which was my favorite out of the menu and my fiance ordered 2 more orders of the Mt. Lassen Trout! Those were our favorites. I feel the raw bar is their specialty as the hot plates were good, but not as good as the fish. So if you eat here definitely go ham on the fishes! But yeah, they have a bread and butter section where we tried the Lobster Veloute + bread which I could have eaten more of. The cheese brulee at the top of the dip was an amazing compliment and so tasty. And my favorite food out of the entire course was the Kaluga Caviar topped on a sweet eclair. It is pricey $57.00 for a single bite, but it is truly the best bite you will ever have in your life. It was for me, and I'd buy it again lol. Treat yourself and get this! Overall the experience was awesome. We plan on coming back with some friends soon!!

Amazing food, service, and sexy ambiance! We had the tasting menu and every bite was unique and delicious! We had a great evening there! I highly recommend!

The food this evening was underwhelming - definitely did not warrant more than 3 stars. A majority of the dish's flavors were either not cohesive or not balanced. The salad was overly bitter -and I love bitter- and the gingerbread texture and taste didn't mesh, mushrooms too sweet, shrimp lacked some acid (albeit cooked perfectly). Our group left the restaurant and agreed the bread was the best thing we had though. Could have just been an off night though, I have seen very mixed reviews. I know how expensive ingredients and labor are, but the portion sizes and taste of food delivered didn't justify what they charge. I'd consider coming back for a drink and a few plates and try again because the space is stunning and I love how they source ingredients.

Thank you for a great time Le Fantastique! I came here on a first date which always has the potential to be awkward, but the vibes, wine, and food all kept the conversation humming. It's fun, but also romantic, already thinking about an anniversary dinner here!

Nice ambiance. Good food. The favorites were the wagu, bread and the mushroom

I've eaten at Le Fantastique a number of times and it still never feels like enough! This place is my ultimate vibe - incredibly technical yet approachable food, a wine list that makes France jealous, and a perfect compilation of eclectic vinyl spinning throughout the evening. It's the kind of place I wish every city had! Raw fish is not to be missed and don't sleep on the chicken because it's the perfect dish to end your evening with alongside many hand-picked wines. Robbie Wilson is fulfilling all of our Tokyo wine bar dreams!

Don't waste your time or money! Despite several of the negative reviews we decided to make reservations on Resy . Reservations were for 8:30 pm on a Saturday and we were seated at 8:45...not the issue. I knew to expect smaller tapas type servings...but not thimble like. French bread?? Not like any bread I have had in France, although that is the only thing that was filling. The waiter is where it gets interesting---pushy, rude, attitude to the point I felt as though we were bothering him if we had a question (which we had only a couple but decided to give up). Then at 9:10 after being served a couple of plates, were told that the kitchen closed at 9:15 so if we wanted anything else, we had to order now. OK....so you take reservations past 9 but your kitchen closes at 9:15? Our bill was around $200 and I still tipped appropriately yet begrudgingly and as we were enjoying our conversation the music suddenly became overwhelmingly loud (speakers were close to our ears) --to the point where you thought perhaps it was shifting to a loud nightclub. It was the restaurant's way of telling us to get out.....or perhaps part of their "90 minute rule." Either way, I do not recommend, have shared the experience with my SF friends and those planning on visiting. There are too many other amazing establishments in this beautiful city to enjoy that actually want you there! No way is this a Michelin experience.

I was here on my birthday!!! It was just so amazing the food was delicious. The atmosphere was beautiful and the staff was the best I've ever had highly recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyJust came out of the restaurant, fabulous food, but
Just came out of the restaurant, fabulous food, but complete lack of service from younger server, who leaned on the older gentlemen server in correcting his mistakes. My partner had already vocalized that he is vegetarian, but this younger server of ours not only poured wine that was of obvious unequal portion in our glasses but also forgets to mention to the kitchen that all meat ingredients need to be taken out. Lastly, he never attended to our table except taking the food order initially and getting us the bill at the end.One last upsetting thing that I wish I was prepared for- the wagyu steak were two small portions as an entree. I wished the server would have said something, because what I had altogether was probably just an appetizer portion and by the time the wagyu came, there was not enough time to order (had a show to catch afterwards).

Despite reading some of the negative reviews, we decided to make a reservation on Resy for an early Valentine's Day dinner here. I've been wanting to come ever since they opened because their menu is totally up our alley - a little funky but super interesting on paper. With that said, our experience was quite disappointing and I would not recommend dining here. After ordering, there was a huge lapse in time before anything was brought to the table. Once things started to come, there was still a huge gap between dishes, maybe 10-12 minutes, where the table would be empty. The sashimi dishes came out first and were decent albeit a bit salty. The prawns were tasty but also on the salty side. The bread came right before the mains, which was unusual but still fine. The maitake was salty to the point of being inedible and we ended up using the wagyu ribeye to cut the salt. The wagyu ribeye was cooked well, but at $65 for 4oz, I don't know. I understand there's inflation and supply chain issues, but the portions here are abysmal, even for two petite women who don't have big appetites. I can't remember the last time I left a restaurant in this price range hungry and needing to supplement the meal. We ended up hitting the McDonald's drive thru on the way home, I kid you not.Vibe: The music is incredibly loud in there to the point where my wife and I almost had to scream at each other sitting just several feet apart. Not a huge deal at all but definitely something to be aware of if you're looking for an intimate date night spot.
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommended.
We loved this take on Japanese French cuisine. It may sound basic, but get the chicken and the bread. Trust me.

The raw food is the star here, everything we had was excellent. The bread and the mains were good too. Only real miss was the prawns, which are purposely overseasoned and not in a pleasing way. Servings are small, plan on ordering a lot of them. The biggest turnoff is the music. Good selection of tunes and the acoustics are pretty good, but too loud. Much better if they dialed back the volume some. The music does add warmth to what is an aesthetically cold decore.
Be the first to ReplyI heard great things but was weary of the unorthodox menu.
Gosh, my date and I were pleasantly surprised and pleased with the food and overall experience. Take advantage of the raw bar and the culinary journey they hope you take. Order it all. The bread and lobster veloutรฉ is a must. Had both proteins and happy we did.We capped it all off with a slice of their rendition of the carrot cake and it stood up to the savories enjoyed beforehand.Everything was paired with a bottle recommended by the som. Chef's kiss. Prepare to pay a lil' more for usual SF fine dining, but no regrets given the culinary experience and service. Highly recommend and definitely coming back.
Be the first to ReplyLe Fantastique is sadly far from fantastic.
...I wanted to like this place as the location is good for dining before/after performances at the symphony, opera, ballet and SF Jazz... etc. While the lighting and decor are good and the service is okay, the food falls far short of expectation. As a SF foodie, I've eaten at my fair share of Michelin 1, 2, 3 star restaurants. Le Fantastique is priced like a Michelin 1 to 2 star restaurant without delivering a Michelin similar experience. After $170 per person with one glass of wine for the entire party, we had to go some where else to eat again....... which never leads to a happy dining experience. All my dining companions are foodies and we are familiar with fine dining prices and portions but agree the price/portion ratio is pretty ridiculous, especially for a new restaurant. The prawns look good in the photos but as one of my dining companion puts it, it reminded him of the fish sticks of his youth..... I can sort of see if you need a place to grab a glass of wine (there is no cocktails or mocktails) and a tiny portion of food before a performance (you'll need a dinner reservation for somewhere else afterwards), maybe this is okay. But as a dinner experience, it was utterly unsatisfying.
Be the first to ReplyI confirmed by phone today that Le Fantastique is not
I confirmed by phone today that Le Fantastique is not willing to accommodate vegans. In light of the many reports that have indicated that transitioning toward a plant-based diet is one of the most important things humans can do to counter climate change, I find it hard to understand that any restaurant hasn't given this enough thought to, at the very least, offer plant-based options--especially in an area that has more than a sufficient market to support it. Please reconsider!
Be the first to ReplyWe came to Le Fantastique for a celebration.
They provided us with a card signed by their staff. Although food portions were tiny, presentation of the food was great, and the flavors were subpar. If you enjoy places like Nobu this is certainly a spin-offs, with smaller portions. Recommend everything out of the raw bar, mushroom dish, bread with lobster, wagyu, and the rum cake. They have a really nice wine selection, and Japanese beer selection. It should be noted, the music was great as wellS

Not fantastic but not bad either - I'd describe it as very solidReally enjoyed the chicken, the mushroom, and the bread. Chicken was tender, juicy, not dry at all - certainly I'd never get chicken breast to be that good. The mushroom was great. A little heavy on the sauce but it was very good. The bread and cultured butter were great, no complaints there. The wagyu ribeye was pretty average - pretty small portions and definitely not as good as some other wagyu you can get in the city. It was definitely medium rare but somehow still a little tough. Also the outside didn't have the same kind of crisp I enjoyed at other high end establishments. The raw seafood dishes were also pretty average. You'd definitely be able to find better at some of the nicer Japanese restaurants in the city. The scallop was pretty solid and the salmon was good but not great. Also the waiter seemed like he was trying to sell these dishes too hard? I wouldn't be surprised if these were some of the higher margin items on the menu, but the waiter was constantly asking if we would've liked more fish - at least 3 times. And he told us we didn't order enough and that guests typically get 5-6 (these things are like 15-18 each, so he wanted us to spend 100 on appetizers? That wasn't a great feeling)Dessert was the deconstructed s'mores which was decent but again not great. Very pretty dish though Overall the ambiance was good, employees were attentive, decor was fantastic, and the food was solid.
Be the first to ReplyAn expensive disappointment.
The whole restaurant's concept needs to be rethought. We were very intrigued by the music focused concept of Le Fantastique, and the food described in a review sounded appealing, but the restaurant was mediocre and expensive.Upon walking in, the place gives the impression it does not know what it wants to be. The layout is poorly thought out and jumbled. Is it a music lounge, a bar, an upscale, intimate restaurant? It has a cool acoustic ceiling and the front lounge area looks comfortable, but there is a big, unwelcoming and wasted space at the entrance, and the dining area is a grim, grey hotel-like hallway stuck off to the side. The service was attentive and a fairly formal, contrasting with the restaurant's funky lounge feel, but also not particularly helpful with navigating the complicated menu. Even if you eat light, you have to order multiple small dishes to get a full meal, and even the supposedly heartier dishes are rather small. The food is sort of a Japanese-French fusion with sashimi dishes and various French sauce focused plates. If the food had been delicious and come out timely, it may have made up for the weird ambiance and confused vibe. But, while nothing was bad, no dish was memorable or otherwise particularly tasty. And, there some long gaps in getting the food to the table. The whole dinner felt like an ordeal to get through, rather than an enjoyable meal. And, it was an expensive ordeal at that! The fact the restaurant always seems to have open reservations, even on the weekends, probably says it all. I hope the owners rethink what they are doing if they would like to stay in business. If you want to be a lounge, simplify your menu, lower your prices and add more casual seating. If you want to be an expensive restaurant, then up your game! Redo the space to make it flow better and to make the interior more luxurious and inviting--don't stick people in a grim corner. Offer some larger entrees and refine your dining concept, you can go to many restaurants in the city to get inspiration for elegant and delicious Japanese and French food. What you are doing now is not working!
