We visit friends in Key West most years around the holidays, and when we imquired this year and where we should make meal reservations, this came up as a suggestion with the caveat that we almost certainly wouldn't be able to get in.I called a few weeks before our trip and they had exactly one table for four available during our entire nine day stay so we scooped it up. Your reservation time is set for when you'll catch the boat from the mainland, and you have an hour and a half to enjoy your meal and get to the return boat. We just exactly made it.We recommend starting with a fabulous craft cocktail (the rum-based one my husband got was particularly terrific) and enjoying a bottle of wine with your meal. We wished they'd had more shareables. We woumd up getting two orders of the to-die-for spicy tuna nachoes, which were transcendent but tiny (about $5 per bite) and the ceviche of the day.The lunch menu is mostly just salads and sandwiches (at about $25 apiece), but they had a blackened seafood special served over a cauliflower rice and veggie risotto that both myself and my friend John snapped up and adored. My husband had a lovely crabcake sandwich (the Eaton Street market one is slightly better) with pretty lackluster truffle fries -- the only real dud of the visit. We were dining with a world-renowned whiskey journalist who couldn't resist letting our waitress know his preferred temperature for our pinot noir to be served. Our other companion drinks this same vintage regularly and said he thought this particular bottle was a little off. I was honestly too busy drinking in the spectacular view and the perfect afternoon to notice. We split a couple of table-slappingly delicious desserts (a deconstructed key line I thought gave Blue Heaven a run for it's money, and an even better coconut flan with a passion fruit melba) to finish out our fabulous meal. Our bills were about $125 including a 15 percent locals discount on the food and an included 20 percent gratuity). After adding an additional gratuity for the stellar service it was well over $500 for a lunch for 4, but especially for the Keys it didn't seem outrageous. The grounds were gorgeous and we can see shelling out for a night here too celebrate a special occasion. Maybe our 20th anniversary? The boat ride to and from in a beautiful and zippy wooden boat that came as far as we did to be there (it's name plate listed Holland Michigan) was also a joy and easy on my often motion-sickness-sensitive system. I didn't read the Yelp reviews until afterwards and am kicking myself for not trying to spot a key deer while there. After at least a dozen trips to the keys I've yet to spot one.
