Llewelyn's London Reviews from The Last Year
Wasn't welcomed - so won't be back
I was in Herne Hill a few days ago with friend and thought I'd drop by Llewelyns to book a table for my husband's birthday. A flustered female staff member finally came over to me & looked/sounded highly put out that I was bothering them. "Haven't you looked online?" she said after I asked if I could book a nice, cosy table for our celebration. "We don't do specific tables, and I'm afraid you will find it too busy here." I was slightly mortified, but said, ok I'll go somewhere else - and I won't be back. Potential patrons weirdly not welcome here - perhaps she would prefer we ate our meal on-line too? On a positive note, thanks for saving me the best part of £200 at your establishment. And btw, I'm local, so this is my word-of-mouth review to other locals for your restaurant too.
Great food, solid service, just a little better than you'd expect
Visited with wine nerd friends, We took our own wine (corkage a reasonable £20). The food was excellent - definitely a cut above "neighbourhood restaurant" - bistro in style, just a little bit ambitious, the kind of food one often sees in Paris less frequently in London. The beef tartare in particular was superb. The service was super engaging and friendly - not formal but quick, efficient and helpful. The dining room itself is quite buzzy and you don't get a *ton* of space, but it's not *super* loud, and more than tolerable for my middle aged years. Will definitely be back.
Adequate
It’s a casual place, unstuffy with an efficient but peremptory staff. I wasn’t impressed to have the bill plonked down on the table before we had asked for it - neither was I impressed by a surly waitress who plonked down dishes in a grim fashion. As for the food -our winter tomato starters were excellent, interesting and flavoursome. My companions’ mains of duck and spätzle were pronounced “fine”, but my pork loin was chewy, tough in places and fat had not been rendered properly, although the dish’s flavours were interesting. Desserts were unmemorable. Llewelyn’s is alright and as a neighbourhood restaurant quite reasonable, but I was underwhelmed by it.
Disappointing menu and amateurish service
It’s not terrible. The menu and extremely amateurish service do not make for what should be a far better experience at this price point. Pity as some of the food is good.
Dinner in Herne Hill
Food, ambience and service excellent. Table for 2 a little close to other guests! First visit to the restaurant and will return. Thank you for a lovely evening…
Homely elegance
I have been to Llewelyn’s a few times this year and each team the food, wine and service has been excellent. The menu is ever changing, in line with the seasons, and offers something a bit off the beaten track but equally that kind of ‘just what you fancy’ comfort food. It’s elegant but homely and the service is always efficient, yet relaxed. One of my favourite London restaurants.
No cash. No go.
Fabulous food and wine. Service great and friendly. Only downside, they do t take cash. Just want the option. Won’t return as they need to accommodate the many, not the few.
Tinned Tomatoes!
Pretentious menu and we should have left. But we stayed to eat an array of tastes that never really gelled together. The bread (old) and butter was actually the best part of it. The fish stew was cooked in a tin of tomatoes. You have to cook that down and and you have to add stock, onions etc. you da not be slapping a few bits of fish in and calling it stew. And it was expensive
Top-notch cooking
Went to Llewelyn's on a recommendation and it was completely wonderful. The dishes that we had needed some careful cooking (fried courgette flowers, fish, île flottante etc) and they were all perfect. We also had a very good peach tea gimlet and a calvados to round off a really excellent dinner! The service was lovely too - looking forward to coming back. I've recently spent the same on some very average meals so this was a real treat.
Great outdoor summer lunch in Herne Hill
Really lovely food. Excellent service. Crab starter and San Marzano starters were the highlights but we also liked the Panisses a lot.

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
