Just an old school diner I know but this place is a Chicago
Just an old school diner I know but this place is a Chicago staple and honestly it has to be experienced. Weekdays are the best time to get in if you can because Weekends this place is a zoo. Awesome food for curing a hangover and great service. Freshly made donut holes are honestly one of my favorite items on the menu. Omelets are perfectly fluffy and highly recommended. Corned beef hash is the canned type which IMO is the best kind. Everything bread wise is fresh baked and if you can, purchase some to take to the house, you'll thank me later.

It just doesn't get better! Walked in on Friday morning at 9:00 and got the only open table. Our server was like a whirling dervish while simultaneously being the sweetest and most engaging. Our food looked only okay so I was surprised at how delicious it was. We had the French toast and though it is not dipped to have a gooey inside and crispy outside it had an amazing cinnamon crunch exterior and I really enjoyed it. Our other dish was smoked salmon Benedict. Tasty but the real take away here is that they give you a steak knife to cut through those resistant English muffins....nice touch! Excellent experience!

Be the first to ReplyThis is a classic Chicago diner spot.
The food here is what you would expect from a typical diner which I love. The omelette was big and fluffy and the pancakes with chocolate chips were delicious. They also gave you an orange slice and a doughnut hole for free to start. We went here on a Saturday and my only issue is that there were a ton of people and it was extremely crowded. The tables are all very close to each other so you can hear everyone's conversations and it felt very claustrophobic. I think this ruined the experience a bit, but hoping I can return and have a better environment next time.

I recently went to Lou Mitchell's after last being there probably about a decade or more ago. I thought that you were supposed to get orange juice and a donut hole upon arrival? (I think it used to be a cinnamon roll, but don't quote me on that). Never received it even though I saw other patrons who were given those items. Really long wait time to order, get food and check out. Service was average. When on a weekday late morning and it was relatively busy. (They don't take reservations - FYI.) Food was ok, but pricey for what it is compared to other diners. I loved the place during my past visits, but this time was kind of a bummer.
Be the first to ReplyI just can't ever get tired of this place.
Only have been for breakfast but it's just what I like in a breakfast place. Stopped in for breakfast before our 2p train, and boy did it hit the spot. From the hostess to the waitress, to the decor, it's just solid old school atmosphere with friendly service and solid meals.

Be the first to ReplyLou Mitchell's is an iconic Chicago diner celebrating 100
Lou Mitchell's is an iconic Chicago diner celebrating 100 years this month. I came here on St. Patrick's day for brunch and the line was quite long. It's a first come first serve restaurant, but the line moved at an efficient pace. The inside is typical diner style and the ambiance is very bustling. The menu is very large and there are many choices. The food was very disappointing. I see this as more of a touristy destination than a go-to hearty breakfast place. I came here with a group and no one was especially impressed with their dish. The "Royal Burger" was unseasoned and the bread to filling ratio was off (more bread than anything else). The fries were homemade from whole potatoes, but some were not cooked all the way and you could taste raw potato. They also forgot the coleslaw that comes on the side with the deluxe entrees. The biscuits and gravy were very average. The biscuits itself were very crumbly, which wasn't my favorite. The table comes with complimentary jams, so we ordered some toasted bread to try them with. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be homemade jams, but they are not very good. The orange marmalade is a mixture of oranges and the peels (which gives it a bitter taste) and the purple jam doesn't really taste like anything besides sweetness. My friends enjoyed their coffee. Overall, we left with our stomachs full, but I won't be returning here.

Hospitality and service never misses! Food consistently the same for the past 30 years. Miss the milk duds and stewed prunes but post Covid and keeping prices in reasonable perspective you need to cut some overhead. Staff is extremely pleasant. 101 years and going strong. Great coffee! Love Lou!
Be the first to ReplyI really enjoyed this place.
I refer this restaurant as a piece of Chicago Americana. Nice serving sized portions, excellent ham carved off the bone and a solid cup of coffee. Whenever I am in the city this is my #1 breakfast joint.

We had time to explore a little. I feel like we discovered one of Chicago's local gems. Service was excellent and it was packed. The food came out quick and it was delicious. We had the Belgium waffle with fruit and a Denver omelet. My husband said the o.elet and the potatoes were good and my waffle was to perfection. The little donut hole and orange slice they give you is that little extra touch that makes people want to come back. Will definitely be back when we're in the area.
Be the first to ReplyIf I could give it less than one star I would.
They ordered some for work one time and one of my coworkers told me it was white folks pizza. We had the sausage pizza. The sausage itself is manufactured. It doesn't look like a real clump of Italian sausage. It looks like a mouse dropping but bigger.

Stopped here for lunch today. Lou's has been a long time staple of Chicago and I figured being a Chicago Boy I must go here. I had a simple patty melt It was great I had a Diet Coke But what made me be so utterly impressed was the amazing service. My server was a wonderful gorgeous hard working ray of sunshine. We shared many pleasantries and she learned my mom was a server so my respect was astronomical. She brought another waitress over to meet her great customer and then I had the privilege as she took me up front to meet the owner. Just a wonderful experience. If you've never stopped here you really must. And a huge shout out to those amazing hard working under appreciated servers bus boys and cooks. You guys are amazing and I thank you I look forward to seeing my ray of sunshine again real soon Respect from the heart

This place is a legendary breakfast and lunch joint; no brunchy brunch menus. All the egg dishes, waffles, pancakes and fruit laden culinary delights are amazing. The Mitchell's Club sandwich is incredible, and there are many others that are equally as good. Many more to try . Highly recommend and will return as I have for the last 35 years.

Met some colleagues here due to location and so glad I found this place! Very old school diner vibe. They have a great omelette menu, include an apple and cheese omelet, and they make their own bread. Great service.
Be the first to ReplyReally good food, great service and ambiance.

Be the first to ReplyI walked by this spot thinking it was a simple local
I walked by this spot thinking it was a simple local Chicago restaurant but boy was I wrong. There's a lot of history to this place and I'm glad I stopped by here.AMBIANCE:Parking: Street parking, depending on the day and season, it can get busy.Seating: Inside and outside seating. Room for maybe about 75 people. Great for groups and individuals.Feels: You're really not too far away from Union Station and other touristy spots. When I entered, I was welcomed by the hustle and bustle of the diner. This place is not hidden gem as its known to locals and travelers. There's no music but just the sound of chatter of people and servers on the move. You can basically get a history of Chicago from their vintage pictures of the city and iconic people that stopped by.FOOD:La Conga Delight & Fries (Recommend)Basically a cheese sandwich with delicious slices of savory bacon and juicy tomatoes. What's not to like?!? I enjoyed the poppy seed bread, the generous portion of cheese, and the nice side of cole slaw. Topped with thick-cut, seasoned, crunchy fries helped add an extra delightful experience. This was enjoyable during a Winter Chicago day. World's Famous Coffee (Recommend)Awesome! Did I know anything exceptionally special about this place? Not necessarily but after reading the history of this place, I understand why this is world-famous - as people travel, this was one of the first food spots to welcome them arriving from Union Station. Aside from being welcomed by the cold weather, a nice cup of hot coffee is comforting.CUSTOMER SERVICE:Virginia was great! Friendly, sweet, and helpful!TL; DR OVERALL:4.5 Stars! I can see why this place wins the hearts of many. Great selections, reasonable prices, and a pleasant ambiance. Yes there are a lot of great eats in Chicago but this stands out as it has a nice local feel to it. A sincere thanks to Uncle Lou and the team for making this place awesome throughout all the years!TIPS:* Check out their seasonal specials * OG Location

Big portions all delicious fast service. Highly recommend it i loved it and will be back
Be the first to ReplyCame to the famous Lou Michell on Route 66.
Hostess Donna (huh, she's 94 years young?) found us the best server in the place, Chad. Very energetic and very informative. As a diabetic, he was able to hook us up with sugar free maple syrup. We never saw the bottom of our coffee cup (he was always there to give us refills) and he was constantly checked in with us. The portions are HUGE and everything is made on site (or their offsite bakery. They have their own specialty coffee blend and they make their own orange marmalade too. A great place that opens early, a nice diner to visit with really nice people.

Long wait, my mom was excited to come here as she had been her in the 90s with an old boyfriend.. hahah the mems. Anyway, took us a long time to be seated, expected on a busy November morning. Food was ok. Don't remember what I got actually. Nothing really noteworthyOh, but the spinach salad was actually a 4.5/5 stars. The star of a show. A salad at a diner. Who would have thought. Ugh ok it's 4 stars for the wonderful people here and the convivial atmosphere of a classical diner. I rated 3 originally but my spirit is like nah we gon give them 4

When you first enter, you get all the vibes of a old school diner. The place is also decked out in Chicago bears flags & gear. We were welcomed in right away and sat down pretty quickly on this Friday afternoon. Our waitress Virginia was lovely & very personable. I had the special of the day French toast--SUPER filling, fluffy, & delicious. My boyfriend enjoyed the waffle a lot but thought the chicken could have used a little more flavor (it was crispy though!) Overall, we really enjoyed this place's service & food. Will visit again when we come back to town!

I recently visited Lou's diner and was blown away by the experience. The restaurant has managed to keep all the worthwhile attributes of an old diner while leaving out all the progressive changes that have become common in modern diners. The breakfast was incredible. The homemade tastes were something that I had forgotten even existed, and it was such a refreshing change from the typical diner fare. The service was also top-notch. The servers were friendly and attentive, and they went above and beyond to make sure that my experience was a great one.Overall, I highly recommend this old fashioned diner to anyone looking for a delicious, comforting meal with a touch of nostalgia. It's the perfect place to enjoy a great breakfast and step back in time.
Be the first to ReplyThis is definitely one of those Chicago legacy restaurants.
Came in for breakfast 2 days ago and there were lots of customers. Ended up sitting at the counter. Made me think of the Nighthawks painting even though this place isn't 24 hours. They give you a donut hole + orange slice when you come in. I ordered coffee, chocolate chip pancakes, bacon eggs. Eggs and bacon came with potatoes!! Im not normally a big breakfast person but I was taking big walk in afternoon and knew I would need my energy. Pancakes come with maple syrup. Thankful that a diner like this still exists in Chicago.
