Restaurants or chefs like this are like a needle in a haystack
This gourmet restaurant has an elegant design reminiscent of an Indian palace and is a go-to place with local diners and hotel guests for a fantastic culinary experience. The live tandoori cooking and innovatively reimagined Indian classics are a treat for a special occasion or a private dinner party. This is an uncommon opportunity to experience the work of an undeniably gifted and passionate creator, designer, and master chef of the intricate and vibrant Indian cuisine. Restaurants or chefs like this are like a needle in a haystack. India’s first Michelin Star chef, Vineet Bhatia, is talented, and I mean seriously talented. Deeply inspired by his roots and traditions, it's the chef's first restaurant in Al Khobar. If you have not enjoyed one of his creations yourself, all I can say is you’re missing out. The resident chef Nourian from Bihar came to meet us and tell us about his own journey across India, picking up nuances from each region. Listening to him describe the intricacy of each dish we ordered with eloquent detail, their mystical status was set in stone for me. A delightful combination of hot and cold, dry and with gravy, every dish had this kind of complexity, fire, and sheer deliciousness. Starting with the play of sweet and sour flavors of the Papri chat and Dahi Bhalla, we went on to the Palak Tikki, little pop in the mouth savory discs. This was followed by the creamy, textured Tandoori dishes - Fish tikka, chicken tikka, and prawns. Powerful aromas of spice waft up. Heavenly marinated, soft as silk, and perfectly spiced, the Tandoori dishes were an explosion of taste in the mouth. The glorious, hot, and crispy butter Naans and the show stopper onion and garlic Kulchas arrived at this time, and we found ourselves speechless. The curry dishes we ordered were the rich and flavorful Lamb korma and Chicken korma. The roasted spices gave a toasty flavor. This was accompanied by the piping hot and luscious Dal Makhani and tempered and balanced by the cool, delicious Raita. And then the covered pots of Biryani arrived! There was such excitement at our table as we tore off the bread from the top and – can’t even begin to describe the glee on everyone’s face. Not much room left for dessert at this stage, but we did have the soft and sweet Gulab jamun. Unfortunately, all good things must end as our dinner, no, our adventure ended.

Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant in Saudi Arabia
When I lived in Al Khobar in 2010-2011, this was my favorite restaurant. Zander and I are back in Saudi Arabia to run the Riyadh Marathon and we drove 4 hours to Al Khobar mostly to have dinner at Maharaja more than 10 years after my last visit. We had an amazing set tasting menu experience enhanced by Mr. Ishmael, the warm and knowledgable manager (who has been here since before they opened!). Zander exclaimed that this is the best Indian food he has ever eaten and we are now planning on visiting Chef Vineet's Riyadh or Bahrain location before we head back to NY. After dinner, Mr. Ishmael arranged for us to have a rooftop lounge tour and we met Mr. Ratan, who was equally wonderful and welcoming. Highly recommended!

We visit the Maharajah by Vineet at the Movenpick Hotel regularly. Each and every time we visit, we enjoy the most delicious food. The chicken biriyani is the best I have ever had and I also love the dahl.
All the staff are welcoming, professional and take great care of us.
Looking forward to visiting again very soon.
Just went here as I have been
Just went here as I have been the Vineet’s restaurant in the Gulf Hotel, Bahrain and always been very impressed. The service here however is shocking. They made me wait at the door and several staff walked past me many times, finally showed me to the table, asked me to scan in the menu - that was it! No ‘welcome’, ‘nice to join us’, nothing!
Fifteen minutes later no one came and asked me if I even wanted a drink. I walked out in disgust. Even when I walked out they didn’t even have the professionalism to ask why.
These clowns are charging over SR50 for tadka dal and they want us to pay that and receive useless service. Very shocking, impolite and unprofessional. I don’t mind paying extortionate prices if the welcome and service is exceptional. This was anything but. I will not be going back and this has put me off staying in this hotel again. I feel sorry that Vineet Bhatia, a genuinely lovely and brilliant chef has got his name to this and his staff cannot be bothered to do their job.
MAHARAJA BY VINEET, MOVENPICK HOTEL, AL KHOBAR
It was not the restaurant we originally chose which (due to Corona) was closed for sit down dining.
We webbed another and found - a one star Michelin Restaurant. We recognized the owner, Vineet from The Final Table.
It was a unanimous “no decision” moment. From a Thursday work weary evening my son and I were suddenly and unexpectedly transported to the Universe of Fine Dining at the Maharaja by Vineet Restaurant at the Movenpick Hotel situated in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia.
From the moment we arrived, it was an experience. We could not have been better served. Initially seated in a dimly lit area, my son requested that we be moved to an area better lit. “Would we mind sitting at a table at the back of the restaurant?” the waiter asked hesitantly. We would be near the kitchen. We didn’t. Best choice we could ever have made. From our table we watched in amazement as the chef roasted naan bread to perfection in gas fired cement kilns; watched trayfulls of beautifully prepared food efficiently leave the kitchen, and our own waiter attend to our needs in the quiet atmosphere which surrounded.
The complimentary papadums and accompanying sauces were the introduction to an evening which would prove to be nothing short of amazing.
For Starters and out of curiosity, we opted to share a serving of the street style cauliflower stir fry, the Gobi Manchurian which we had seen presented by Chef and owner Vineet at The Final Table. Its delicate flavor did not disappoint and neither did the mains. I chose the Prawn Jhinga Bhuna and my son the Lamb Rogan Josh. Wanting to savour the taste, we could hardly finish and asked if we would be able to “takeaway.”
Dessert? After such fine dining we felt we could have no more, but, our chef thought otherwise and to our surprise gifted us a complimentary sweet which comprised a delicate flavoured in house cashew and peanut ice cream garnished to perfection. Coupled with a good in house filter coffee, it was an evening to remember.
For a mother and son, homesick to return if only briefly to South Africa it was the perfect pause.
Thank you to Michelin Chef Vineet for an amazing restaurant; for superb training of staff and to the maitre’d. A very special thank you to our friendly and efficient waiter Zaftry and to Chef Bharat Lal for a flawless performance in helping to make (what was until then, a very ordinary ) evening so special.
It was a perfect performance. We shall definitely be back for an encore.
Thank you.
Maharaja by Vineet, amazing experience
So this is a bit of a long read, so if you want to read about the experience , read it all. If you want to know my opinion on whether this is for you ( in case the title wasn't convincing enough) , jump to the end.
My mother and I both work and live in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. We have both been here for a year and we were feeling a little homesick as we have not been back home to South Africa in a year. Being from Durban we felt like a good curry was needed.
We jumped onto the internet and found the Maharja by Vineet, at the Mövenpick hotel. We soon discovered that it was owned my Michelin star Chef Vineet, who was one of the judges on Netflix,"The Final Plate". ( We had recently watched this series and it was fantastic)
Mom and I got quite excited seeing this and decided to dress up and go.
When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly and enthusiastic waiter from Sri Lanka ,who's name was Zafty. We were shown to our table which was situated right by the Chef.
While we were looking through the menu Zafty brought us the most amazing poppadoms with mint curry , chutney curry and mango curry sauces. Needless to say this set the tone for the rest of the evening. The Chef, Bharat Lal, surprised us with the best tasting garlic and chilli naan bread.
We decided to order the Gobi Manchurian starter, (street style cauliflower stir fry with spring onion) It was heavenly! I had goosebumps as it was infused with flavour and I had never had cauliflower in that way. I would highly highly recommend this.
Next the mains were served. Mom decided to have the Jhinga Bhuna, (Prawns braised in onion - chilli masala, flavoured with lemon) She said it was incredible , the prawns were flavoursome and a descent size.
I had the Lamb Rogan Josh ( Classic Kashmiri slow cooked diced lamb in a rich onion & tomato masala.) The Lamb was so soft and the sauce was amazing on the garlic chilli naan bread that accompanied it.
Both dishes were served with Lemon Cashewnut Rice which complemented the flavours and the textures of the curries.
Needless to say after all of the amazing food desert was put on pause, just while we both recovered from the food coma.
We decided to order coffees , and Chef Bharat Lal decided give us one last surprise and got Zafty to bring us the most amazing cashew ice cream and peanut ice cream. it was the perfect way to end off an amazing evening.
Overall the experience was amazing , the ambiance was perfect and the staff were well mannered , accommodating and just friendly. The level of service was phenomenal and it provided an amazing escape from the the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Mom and I left feeling a little less homesick and definitely have plans on going back soon to try out the other dishes.
Chef Vineet has done an amazing job and has definitely made sure the standard of food and service here was world class.
I would really like to thank our amazing waiter Zaftry, and Chef Bharat Lal for looking after us and making us feel so welcome.
