Makan Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Bad service for delicious food
While the food was delicious, the service left a lot to be desired. The place was mostly empty on a slow Tuesday night, but the waiter rushed us to order within 2 minutes of sitting, and another member of the service team tried to clear our plates 10 minutes after we were served -- touching our plates without even asking us! Really disappointing service. That said, the spicy noodles were delicious.
Favorite Dinner Experience
Our waiter, Mohamed, made our dinner a night to remember. Suggestions of traditional dishes were just what we wanted for our first tastes of Malaysian cuisine. Spicy Hakka Noodles and Penang Street Noodles were our favorites. Michelin-starred 2023.
Dinner in Washington, DC
Came here for Friday dinner—made reservations at a high top, and were seated right away. The place was fairly packed and had an energetic vibe. Food was good—although we did enjoy the food, I didn’t find anything particularly special. My top favorites were the Ayam Goreng (Fried chicken with salted duck yolk), Char Kway Teow (Penang Street Noodle—but overloaded with Chinese sausage vs. shrimp) and the Baby Bok Choy (the gravy is really good). For appetizer, the Chicken Sate was only decent if you ate it with the peanut sauce otherwise it’s bland—the Kerabu Mangga (Mango Salad) was okay, spicy kick, but an unnecessary big portion for an appetizer, that ended up going to waste. Cocktails were okay—I liked the Halia & Serai (Malaysian gimlet). Service was amazing—our server Caitlin was great—friendly and attentive. Note, this place does add an automatic 22% service fee that goes to all the staff.
Good Dinner with Automatic Gratuity
It was a good experience at this Malaysian restaurant. They have outdoor seating and parking is on the street. We ordered beer, wine, a Chicken Curry dish, a noodle dish that was pretty spicy and a Tapioca pudding. Service was decent, there was enough attention. The Chicken Curry had the right amount of spices. Prices were a bit on the higher end for the quality of the decor and food. Be aware that it is restaurant policy to charge an automatic service charge of 22 percent. The good thing about it is the bill does not come with an additional tip line. Neighborhood is the fast changing upper northwest 14st area.
Automatic 22 Percent Gratuity Charge
My $22 plate of shrimp included 6 small shrimp and a few green beans as they dumped the red chili paste/Sambal jar into the bowl and called it homemade sauce. That was it.Usually, that portion is representative of a mezze plate or tapas of ajillos gambas--which are not considered entree size. I was still hungry. Be aware the they include an automatic 22 percent service charge. This increasingly annoying practice is becoming more common in DMV area. Not only is it presumptuous, but the receipt specifies that they are trying to pay higher wages to their wait staff. So rather than taking responsibility and increasing their salaries along with the food menu prices, they dump it on the role of "gratuity". That's a false flag for addressing wage equity. Will never recommend this place to anyone--which is said since there aren't many Malaysian places.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
